Within the framework of the improved isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (ImIQMD) model,he fusion dynamics of symmetric reaction systems are investigated systematically. Calculations show that the number of nucleon transfer in the neck region is appreciably dependent on the incident energies, but strongly on he reaction systems. A comparison of the neck dynamics is performed for the symmetric reactions 58Ni+58Niand 64Ni+64Ni at energies in the vicinity of the Coulomb barrier. An increase of the ratios of the neutron to proton in the neck region at initial collision stage is observed and obvious for the latter system, which reduces the fusion barrier of two colliding nuclei. The distribution of the dynamical fusion barriers and the fusion excitation functions are calculated and compared with the available experimental data.

We have recently introduced the concept of whole-body asymmetric MRI systems [1]. In this theoretical study, we investigate the PNS characteristics of whole-body asymmetric gradient systems as compared to conventional symmetric systems. Recent experimental evidence [2] supports the hypothesis of transverse gradients being the largest contributor of PNS due to induced electric currents. Asymmetric head gradient coils have demonstrated benefits in the past [3]. The numerical results are based on an anatomically-accurate 2mm-human voxel-phantom NORMAN [4]. The results of this study can facilitate the optimization of whole-body asymmetric gradients in terms of patient comfort/safety (less PNS), while prospering the use of asymmetric MRI systems for in-vivo medical interventions.

We present a comprehensive study of two of the most experimentally relevant extensions of Kitaev's spinless model of a one-dimensional p-wave superconductor: those involving (i) longer-range hopping and superconductivity and (ii) inhomogeneous potentials. We commence with a pedagogical review of the spinless model and, as a means of characterizing topological phases exhibited by the systems studied here, we introduce bulk topological invariants as well as those derived from an explicit consideration of boundary modes. In time-reversal symmetric systems, we find that the longer range hopping leads to topological phases characterized by multiple Majorana modes. In particular, we investigate a spin model that respects a duality and maps to a fermionic model with multiple Majorana modes; we highlight the connection between these topological phases and the broken symmetry phases in the original spin model. In the presence of time-reversal symmetry breaking terms, we show that the topological phase diagram is characterized by an extended gapless regime. For the case of inhomogeneous potentials, we explore phase diagrams of periodic, quasiperiodic, and disordered systems. We present a detailed mapping between normal state localization properties of such systems and the topological phases of the corresponding superconducting systems. This powerful tool allows us to leverage the analyses of Hofstadter's butterfly and the vast literature on Anderson localization to the question of Majorana modes in superconducting quasiperiodic and disordered systems, respectively. We briefly touch upon the synergistic effects that can be expected in cases where long-range hopping and disorder are both present.

We show how Majorana end modes can be generated in a one-dimensional system by varying some of the parameters in the Hamiltonian periodically in time. The specific model we consider is a chain containing spinless electrons with a nearest-neighbor hopping amplitude, a p-wave superconducting term, and a chemical potential; this is equivalent to a spin-1/2 chain with anisotropic XY couplings between nearest neighbors and a magnetic field applied in the (z) over cap direction. We show that varying the chemical potential (or magnetic field) periodically in time can produce Majorana modes at the ends of a long chain. We discuss two kinds of periodic driving, periodic delta-function kicks, and a simple harmonic variation with time. We discuss some distinctive features of the end modes such as the inverse participation ratio of their wave functions and their Floquet eigenvalues which are always equal to +/- 1 for time-reversal-symmetric systems. For the case of periodic delta-function kicks, we use the effective Hamiltonian of a system with periodic boundary conditions to define two topological invariants. The first invariant is a well-known winding number, while the second invariant has not appeared in the literature before. The second invariant is more powerful in that it always correctly predicts the numbers of end modes with Floquet eigenvalues equal to + 1 and -1, while the first invariant does not. We find that the number of end modes can become very large as the driving frequency decreases. We show that periodic delta-function kicks in the hopping and superconducting terms can also produce end modes. Finally, we study the effect of electron-phonon interactions (which are relevant at finite temperatures) and a random noise in the chemical potential on the Majorana modes.

Because of its sensitivity to the velocity discontinuity of the earth, receiver function technique has become a routine procedure used to probe interior structure of the earth. Receiver functions contain anisotropic information of the earth’s interior, however, traditional receiver function techniques such as migration imaging and waveform inversion method, which are based on isotropic media assumption, can not effectively extract the anisotropy information contained in the azimuth variation pattern. Only by using the anisotropic media, e.g. a model with symmetric axis of arbitrary orientation, computing the response, can we obtain the detailed anisotropy information hidden in the radial and transversal receiver function. Focusing on the receiver function variation pattern changing wtih different back azimuths, we introduced different kinds of symmetric systems of seismic anisotropy used often, and summarized some possible causes of anisotropy formation. We show details about how to calculate the response of a stratified anisotropy model with symmetric axis of arbitrary orientation. We also simulated receiver functions among different models and analyzed how the changing of anisotropic parameters influence the azimuth variation pattern of receiver functions. The anisotropy study by receiver function analysis was applied to Taihang Mountain Range (TMR) in North China in this thesis. The maximum entropy spectrum deconvolution technique was used to extract radial and transversal receiver functions from the waveforms of 20 portable seismic stations deployed in TMR. Considering the signal-to-noise ratio and the azimuth coverage, we got the variation pattern of receiver functions for 11 stations. After carefully analyzing the pattern of the receiver functions that we got, we obtained the reliable evidence on the existence of anisotropy in the shallow crust in TMR. Our results show that, although the thickness of the upper crustal layer is only about 1 km, the layer shows a strong anisotropy with magnitude of 8~15%; in the deeper of crust, the magnitudes of anisotropy is about 3%~5%, showing a pattern with fast-symmetric-axis. The crust anisotropy beneath TMR in North China obtained in this study also shows a significant difference in both the lateral and vertical scale, which might imply a regional anisotropy characteristic in the studied region.

In this paper we present an analysis that shows the Maxwell Fish Eye (MFE) only has super-resolution property for some particular frequencies (for other frequencies, the MFE behaves as conventional imaging lens). These frequencies are directly connected with the Schumann resonance frequencies of spherical symmetric systems. The analysis have been done using a thin spherical waveguide (two concentric spheres with constant index between them), which is a dual form of the MFE (the electrical fields in the MFE can be mapped into the radial electrical fields in the spherical waveguide). In the spherical waveguide the fields are guided inside the space between the concentric spheres. A microwave circuit comprising three elements: the spherical waveguide, the source and the receiver (two coaxial cables) is designed in COMSOL. The super-resolution is demonstrated by calculation of Scaterring (S) parameters for different position of the coaxial cables and different frequencies of the input signal.

A new three-dimensional analytic optics design method is presented that enables the coupling of three ray sets with only two free-form lens surfaces. Closely related to the Simultaneous Multiple Surface method in three dimensions (SMS3D), it is derived directly from Fermat?s principle, leading to multiple sets of functional differential equations. The general solution of these equations makes it possible to calculate more than 80 coefficients for each implicit surface function. Ray tracing simulations of these free-form lenses demonstrate superior imaging performance for applications with high aspect ratio, compared to conventional rotational symmetric systems.

The previous publications (Miñano et al, 2011) have shown that using a Spherical Geodesic Waveguide (SGW), it can be achieved the super-resolution up to ? /500 close to a set of discrete frequencies. These frequencies are directly connected with the well-known Schumann resonance frequencies of spherical symmetric systems. However, the Spherical Geodesic Waveguide (SGW) has been presented as an ideal system, in which the technological obstacles or manufacturing feasibility and their influence on final results were not taken into account. In order to prove the concept of superresolution experimentally, the Spherical Geodesic Waveguide is modified according to the manufacturing requirements and technological limitations. Each manufacturing process imposes some imperfections which can affect the experimental results. Here, we analyze the influence of the manufacturing limitations on the super-resolution properties of the SGW. Beside the theoretical work, herein, there has been presented the experimental results, as well.

Supercapacitors are energy storage devices that offer a high power density and a low energy density in comparison with batteries. Their limited energy density can be overcome by using asymmetric configuration in mass electrodes, where each electrode works within their maximum available potential window, rendering the maximum voltage output of the system. Such asymmetric capacitors are optimized using the capacitance and the potential stability limits of the electrodes, with the reliability of the design largely depending on the accuracy and the approach taken for the electrochemical characterization. Therefore, the performance could be lower than expected and even the system could break down, if a well thought out procedure is not followed. In this work, a procedure for the development of asymmetric supercapacitors based on activated carbons is detailed. Three activated carbon materials with different textural properties and surface chemistry have been systematically characterized in neutral aqueous electrolyte. The asymmetric configuration of the masses of both electrodes in the supercapacitor has allowed to cover a higher potential window, resulting in an increase of the energy density of the three devices studied when compared with the symmetric systems, and an improved cycle life.

Despite the considerable evidence showing that dispersal between habitat patches is often asymmetric, most of the metapopulation models assume symmetric dispersal. In this paper, we develop a Monte Carlo simulation model to quantify the effect of asymmetric dispersal on metapopulation persistence. Our results suggest that metapopulation extinctions are more likely when dispersal is asymmetric. Metapopulation viability in systems with symmetric dispersal mirrors results from a mean field approximation, where the system persists if the expected per patch colonization probability exceeds the expected per patch local extinction rate. For asymmetric cases, the mean field approximation underestimates the number of patches necessary for maintaining population persistence. If we use a model assuming symmetric dispersal when dispersal is actually asymmetric, the estimation of metapopulation persistence is wrong in more than 50% of the cases. Metapopulation viability depends on patch connectivity in symmetric systems, whereas in the asymmetric case the number of patches is more important. These results have important implications for managing spatially structured populations, when asymmetric dispersal may occur. Future metapopulation models should account for asymmetric dispersal, while empirical work is needed to quantify the patterns and the consequences of asymmetric dispersal in natural metapopulations.

We study the preconditioning of symmetric indefinite linear systems of equations that arise in interior point solution of linear optimization problems. The preconditioning method that we study exploits the block structure of the augmented matrix to design a similar block structure preconditioner to improve the spectral properties of the resulting preconditioned matrix so as to improve the convergence rate of the iterative solution of the system. We also propose a two-phase algorithm that takes advantage of the spectral properties of the transformed matrix to solve for the Newton directions in the interior-point method. Numerical experiments have been performed on some LP test problems in the NETLIB suite to demonstrate the potential of the preconditioning method discussed.
