This work deals with the covalent functionalization of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with phenosafranine (PS) and Nile Blue (NB) dyes. These dyes can act as photosensitizers in energy and electron transfer reactions, with a potential to be applied in photodynamic therapy. Several changes in the characteristic Raman vibrational features of the dyes suggest that a covalent modification of the nanotubes with the organic dyes occurs. Specifically, the vibrational modes assigned to the NH(2) moieties of the dyes are seen to disappear in the SWNT-dye nanocomposites, corroborating the bond formation between amine groups in the dyes and carboxyl groups in the oxidized nanotubes. The X-ray absorption (XANES) data also show, that the intense band at 398.6 eV attributed to 1s -> 2p pi* transition of the nitrogen of the aromatic PS ring, is shifted due to the bonding with the carbonic structure of the SWNTs. The cytotoxicity data of dyes-modified SWNT composites in the presence and absence of light shows that the SWNT-NB (4 mu g/mL) composite presents a good photodynamic effect, namely a low toxicity in the dark, higher toxicity in the presence of light and also a reduced dye photobleaching by auto-oxidation. Oxidized carbon nanotubes are tested as the matrix for analysis of the melamine by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS). Traditional MALDI matrix are not suit for analysis of the low molecular compounds due to the interference associated to the matrix clusters. Oxidized carbon nanotubes can transfer energy to the analyte under the laser irradiation, which makes analyte well ionized or desorbed. Moreover, the interference of the intrinsic matrix ions can be eliminated. Melamine as the a toxic additive which had been added in the milk powder, then it is necessary to establish a new method for detection of the melamine rapid and sensitive.

Oxidized carbon nanotubes are tested as a matrix for analysis of small molecules by matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS). Compared with nonoxidized carbon nanotubes, oxidized carbon nanotubes facilitate sample preparation because of their higher solubility in water. The matrix layer of oxidized carbon nanotubes is much more homogeneous and compact than that of nonoxidized carbon nanotubes. The efficiency of desorption/ionization for analytes and the reproducibility of peak intensities within and between sample spots are greatly enhanced on the surface of oxidized carbon nanotubes. The advantage of the oxidized carbon nanotubes in comparison with alpha-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid (CCA) and carbon nanotubes is demonstrated by MALDI-TOF-MS analysis of an amino acid mixture. The matrix is successfully used for analysis of synthetic hydroxypropyl P-cyclodextrin, suggesting a great potential for monitoring reactions and for product quality control. Reliable quantitative analysis of jatrorrhizine and palmatine with a wide linear range (1-100 ng/mL) and good reproducibility of relative peak areas (RSD less than 10 %) is achieved using this matrix. Concentrations of jatrorrhizine (8.65 mg/mL) and palmatine (10.4 mg/mL) in an extract of Coptis chinensis Franch are determined simultaneously using the matrix and a standard addition method. We report on the growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes from a monometallic Co catalyst on an oxidized Si wafer support by the most simple growth recipe (vacuum annealing, growth by undiluted C 2H 2). Nevertheless, multiwavelength Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron spectroscopy show a remarkable selectivity for chiral indices and thus, e.g., high abundance with a single chirality representing 58% of all semiconducting tubes. In situ x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy monitors the catalyst chemistry during carbon nanotube growth and shows interfacial Co-Si interactions that may help to stabilize the nanoparticle/nanotube diameter. We outline a two-mechanism model explaining the selective growth. © 2012 American Physical Society.

The carbon nanotubes (CNTs) based microelectrode (ME) by modifying CNTs-room temperature ionic liquid (IL) gel at carbon fiber microelectrode (CFME) is easily prepared, which exhibits the typical cyclic voltammogram of ME with sigmoid shape and possesses good stability, high conductivity and enlarged current response and tunable dimension. The direct electron transfer of glucose oxidase has been greatly promoted showing reversible electrochemical behavior even at high scan rate. In addition, the CNTs based ME also exhibits effectively electrocatalytic oxidized ability to biomolecules, e.g. dopamine (DA), ascorbic acid (AA) and dihydronicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. The obvious separation of oxidized peak potential for DA and AA makes it possible to selectively determine DA in presence of AA. These phenomena show that the CNTs based ME has promising potential to detect various species in vivo and in vitro.

The report described a method of more stably dispersing oxidized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by forming complex with polycation and the layer-by-layer self-assembly behavior of the complex with polyanion was studied. The properties of the self-assembled multilayer film containing carbon nanotubes were studied. Cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used for characterization of film assembly. UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry study indicated the uniform growth of the film. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results showed that incorporating of carbon nanotubes in the polyelectrolyte multilayers; decreased in the electron-transfer resistance R, indicating more favorable electrochemical reaction interface. The electrocatalytic property of the multilayer modified electrode to NADH was investigated mainly with different numbers of the bilayers; and the results showed that along with the increase of the assembled bilayers the overpotential of NADH oxidation decreased. The detection lit-nit Could reach 6 mu M at a detection potential of 0.4 V.

A series of PtRu nanocomposites supported on H2O2-oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were synthesized via two chemical reduction methods - one used aqueous formaldehyde (HCHO method) and the other used ethylene glycol (EG method) as the reducing agents. The effects of the solvents (water and ethylene glycol) and the surface composition of the MWCNTs on the deposition and the dispersion of the metal particles were investigated using N-2 adsorption. TEM. ICP-AES. FTIR and TPD. The wetting heats of the MWCNTs in corresponding solvents were also measured. The characterizations suggest that combination of the surface chemistry of the MWCNTs with the solvents decides the deposition and the dispersion of the metal nanoparticles. These nanocomposites were evaluated as proton exchange membrane fuel cell anode catalyts for oxidation of 50 ppm CO contaminated hydrogen and compared with a commercial PtRu/C catalyst. The data reveal superior performances for the nanocomposites prepared by the EG method to those by the HCHO method and even to that for tile Commercial analogue. Structure performance relationship of the nanocomposites was also studied. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The use of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) for environmental analysis has been mainly focused on qualitative analysis of high-mass molecules, such as toxins, humic acid, and microorganisms. Herein,we describe a novel MALDI-TOF-MS method with a matrix of oxidized carbon nanotubes for analysis of low-mass compounds in environmental samples. A number of chemicals in the environment were qualitatively analyzed by the present method, and it was found that most of them, especially the highly polar chemicals, were measurable with high sensitivity. With the intrinsic ability to measure high-mass chemicals, this method can compensate for the current shortage of methods for environmental analysis for the measurement of highly polar or high-mass chemicals. For sample analysis, arsenic speciation in Chinese traditional medicines was qualified and diphenylolpropane in water samples was quantified. With the relatively high tolerance of the method to interfering molecules, a simple pretreatment or even no pretreatment could be employed before MS detection. Furthermore, this method can be employed in a high-throughput format.

The present paper deals with the immobilization of redox mediators and proteins onto protected porous silicon surfaces to obtain their direct electrochemical reactions and to retain their bioactivities. This paper shows that MP-11 and viologens are able to establish chemical bonds with 3-aminopropyltriethoxylsilane-modified porous silicon surface. The functionalization of the surfaces have been fully characterized by energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to examine the immobilization of these mediators onto the solid surface. Amperometric and open circuit potential measurements have shown the direct electron transfer between glucose oxidase and the electrode in the presence of the viologen mediator covalently linked to the 3-aminopropyltriethoxylsilane (APTES)-modified porous silicon surfaces.

Highly dispersed nanocomposites of polyaniline(PANI) and oxidized single wall carbon nanotubes(SWNTs) have been prepared using dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid as dispersant. The materials were characterized via resonance Raman and electronic absorption spectroscopies. The behavior of the composites as a function of the applied potential was also investigated using in situ Raman electrochemical measurements. The results obtained at E(laser) = 1.17 eV suggest that a charge-transfer process occur between PANI and semiconducting nanotubes for samples where the metallic tubes are previously oxidized. The spectroelectrochemical data show that the presence of SWNTs prevents the oxidation of PANI rings. Copyright (C) 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) and resorcinol (RSN) are hair dye precursors of permanent dyeing more used worldwide. The present work describes a simple and economic voltammetric sensor for simultaneous determination of both components in commercial hair dyeing and tap water at low concentrations. PPD and RSN are oxidized at + 0.17 and + 0.61 V vs. Ag/AgCl at glassy carbon electrode coated by composites of multiwall carbon nanotubes with chitosan (MWNTs-CHT/GCE), which anodic currents density normalized are 10% and 70% higher in relation to the unmodified electrode, respectively. The calibration curve for simultaneous determination of PPD and RSN showed linearity between 0.55 and 21.2 mg L-1 with detection limits of 0.79 and 0.58 mg L-1 to PPD and RSN, respectively. The relative standard deviations found for ten determinations were of 0.73 and 2.35% to 2.70 mg L-1, and 0.87 and 1.08% to 15.96 mg L-1 to PPD and RSN, respectively. The voltammetric sensor was applied to determination of PPD and RSN in tap water and commercial hair dyeing samples and the average recovery for these samples was around 97%. The products generated from PPD and RSN reaction such as was p-quinonediimine and bandrowski base were detected by LC-MS/MS and UV-vis spectrophotometry. (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier B.V.

The immobilization of the chiral complex RhDuphos, by electrostatic or π–π (adsorption) interactions, on carbon nanotubes and carbon xerogels is investigated. To promote such interactions, the supports were either oxidized or heat treated to create carboxylic type surface groups or an apolar surface, respectively. The catalysts were tested in the hydrogenation of methyl 2-acetamidoacrylate. The prepared hybrid catalysts are less active than the homogeneous RhDuphos, but most of them show a high enantioselectivity and the one prepared with the oxidized carbon xerogel is also reusable, being able to give a high substrate conversion, keeping as well a high enantioselectivity. The anchorage by electrostatic interactions is more interesting than the anchorage by π–π interactions, as the π–π adsorption method produces a modification of the metal complex structure leading to an active hybrid catalyst but without enantioselectivity. The creation of carboxylic groups on the support surface has led to some hindering of the complex leaching.

Mixtures of Regioregular Poly(3-hexyl-thiophene) (rrP3HT) and multi wall carbon nanotubes have been investigated by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy in Ultra High Vacuum. Carbon nanotubes covered by rrP3HT have been imaged and analyzed, providing a clear evidence that this polymer self assembles on the nanotube surface following geometrical constraints and adapting its equilibrium chain-to-chain distance. Largely spaced covered nanotubes have been analyzed to investigate the role played by nanotube chirality in the polymer wrapping, evidencing strong rrP3HT interactions along well defined directions.
