On-chip debug (OCD) features are frequently available in modern microprocessors. Their contribution to shorten the time-to-market justifies the industry investment in this area, where a number of competing or complementary proposals are available or under development, e.g. NEXUS, CJTAG, IJTAG. The controllability and observability features provided by OCD infrastructures provide a valuable toolbox that can be used well beyond the debugging arena, improving the return on investment rate by diluting its cost across a wider spectrum of application areas. This paper discusses the use of OCD features for validating fault tolerant architectures, and in particular the efficiency of various fault injection methods provided by enhanced OCD infrastructures. The reference data for our comparative study was captured on a workbench comprising the 32-bit Freescale MPC-565 microprocessor, an iSYSTEM IC3000 debugger (iTracePro version) and the Winidea 2005 debugging package. All enhanced OCD infrastructures were implemented in VHDL and the results were obtained by simulation within the same fault injection environment. The focus of this paper is on the comparative analysis of the experimental results obtained for various OCD configurations and debugging scenarios.

Dependability is a critical factor in computer systems, requiring high quality validation & verification procedures in the development stage. At the same time, digital devices are getting smaller and access to their internal signals and registers is increasingly complex, requiring innovative debugging methodologies. To address this issue, most recent microprocessors include an on-chip debug (OCD) infrastructure to facilitate common debugging operations. This paper proposes an enhanced OCD infrastructure with the objective of supporting the verification of fault-tolerant mechanisms through fault injection campaigns. This upgraded on-chip debug and fault injection (OCD-FI) infrastructure provides an efficient fault injection mechanism with improved capabilities and dynamic behavior. Preliminary results show that this solution provides flexibility in terms of fault triggering and allows high speed real-time fault injection in memory elements

Fault injection is frequently used for the verification and validation of dependable systems. When targeting real time microprocessor based systems the process becomes significantly more complex. This paper proposes two complementary solutions to improve real time fault injection campaign execution, both in terms of performance and capabilities. The methodology is based on the use of the on-chip debug mechanisms present in modern electronic devices. The main objective is the injection of faults in microprocessor memory elements with minimum delay and intrusiveness. Different configurations were implemented and compared in terms of performance gain and logic overhead.

The rapid increase in the use of microprocessor-based systems in critical areas, where failures imply risks to human lives, to the environment or to expensive equipment, significantly increased the need for dependable systems, able to detect, tolerate and eventually correct faults. The verification and validation of such systems is frequently performed via fault injection, using various forms and techniques. However, as electronic devices get smaller and more complex, controllability and observability issues, and sometimes real time constraints, make it harder to apply most conventional fault injection techniques. This paper proposes a fault injection environment and a scalable methodology to assist the execution of real-time fault injection campaigns, providing enhanced performance and capabilities. Our proposed solutions are based on the use of common and customized on-chip debug (OCD) mechanisms, present in many modern electronic devices, with the main objective of enabling the insertion of faults in microprocessor memory elements with minimum delay and intrusiveness. Different configurations were implemented starting from basic Components Off-The-Shelf (COTS) microprocessors, equipped with real-time OCD infrastructures, to improved solutions based on modified interfaces, and dedicated OCD circuitry that enhance fault injection capabilities and performance. All methodologies and configurations were evaluated and compared concerning performance gain and silicon overhead.

ABSTRACT SRAM-based Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are built on Static RAM (SRAM) technology configuration memory. They present a number of features that make them very convenient for building complex embedded systems. First of all, they benefit from low Non-Recurrent Engineering (NRE) costs, as the logic and routing elements are pre-implemented (user design defines their connection). Also, as opposed to other FPGA technologies, they can be reconfigured (even in the field) an unlimited number of times. Moreover, Xilinx SRAM-based FPGAs feature Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration (DPR), which allows to partially reconfigure the FPGA without disrupting de application. Finally, they feature a high logic density, high processing capability and a rich set of hard macros. However, one limitation of this technology is its susceptibility to ionizing radiation, which increases with technology scaling (smaller geometries, lower voltages and higher frequencies). This is a first order concern for applications in harsh radiation environments and requiring high dependability. Ionizing radiation leads to long term degradation as well as instantaneous faults, which can in turn be reversible or produce irreversible damage. In SRAM-based FPGAs, radiation-induced faults can appear at two architectural layers, which are physically overlaid on the silicon die. The Application Layer (or A-Layer) contains the user-defined hardware, and the Configuration Layer (or C-Layer) contains the (volatile) configuration memory and its support circuitry. Faults at either layers can imply a system failure, which may be more ore less tolerated depending on the dependability requirements. In the general case, such faults must be managed in some way. This thesis is about managing SRAM-based FPGA faults at system level, in the context of autonomous and dependable embedded systems operating in a radiative environment. The focus is mainly on space applications, but the same principles can be applied to ground applications. The main differences between them are the radiation level and the possibility for maintenance. The different techniques for A-Layer and C-Layer fault management are classified and their implications in system dependability are assessed. Several architectures are proposed, both for single-layer and dual-layer Fault Managers. For the latter, a novel, flexible and versatile architecture is proposed. It manages both layers concurrently in a coordinated way, and allows balancing redundancy level and dependability. For the purpose of validating dynamic fault management techniques, two different solutions are developed. The first one is a simulation framework for C-Layer Fault Managers, based on SystemC as modeling language and event-driven simulator. This framework and its associated methodology allows exploring the Fault Manager design space, decoupling its design from the target FPGA development. The framework includes models for both the FPGA C-Layer and for the Fault Manager, which can interact at different abstraction levels (at configuration frame level and at JTAG or SelectMAP physical level). The framework is configurable, scalable and versatile, and includes fault injection capabilities. Simulation results for some scenarios are presented and discussed. The second one is a validation platform for Xilinx Virtex FPGA Fault Managers. The platform hosts three Xilinx Virtex-4 FX12 FPGA Modules and two general-purpose 32-bit Microcontroller Unit (MCU) Modules. The MCU Modules allow prototyping software-based CLayer and A-Layer Fault Managers. Each FPGA Module implements one A-Layer Ethernet link (through an Ethernet switch) with one of the MCU Modules, and one C-Layer JTAG link with the other. In addition, both MCU Modules exchange commands and data over an internal UART link. Similarly to the simulation framework, fault injection capabilities are implemented. Test results for some scenarios are also presented and discussed. In summary, this thesis covers the whole process from describing the problem of radiationinduced faults in SRAM-based FPGAs, then identifying and classifying fault management techniques, then proposing Fault Manager architectures and finally validating them by simulation and test. The proposed future work is mainly related to the implementation of radiation-hardened System Fault Managers.

In today's complicated computing environment, managing data has become the primary concern of all industries. Information security is the greatest challenge and it has become essential to secure the enterprise system resources like the databases and the operating systems from the attacks of the unknown outsiders. Our approach plays a major role in detecting and managing vulnerabilities in complex computing systems. It allows enterprises to assess two primary tiers through a single interface as a vulnerability scanner tool which provides a secure system which is also compatible with the security compliance of the industry. It provides an overall view of the vulnerabilities in the database, by automatically scanning them with minimum overhead. It gives a detailed view of the risks involved and their corresponding ratings. Based on these priorities, an appropriate mitigation process can be implemented to ensure a secured system. The results show that our approach could effectively optimize the time and cost involved when compared to the existing systems

This thesis presents the study and development of fault-tolerant techniques for programmable architectures, the well-known Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), customizable by SRAM. FPGAs are becoming more valuable for space applications because of the high density, high performance, reduced development cost and re-programmability. In particular, SRAM-based FPGAs are very valuable for remote missions because of the possibility of being reprogrammed by the user as many times as necessary in a very short period. SRAM-based FPGA and micro-controllers represent a wide range of components in space applications, and as a result will be the focus of this work, more specifically the Virtex® family from Xilinx and the architecture of the 8051 micro-controller from Intel. The Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) with voters is a common high-level technique to protect ASICs against single event upset (SEU) and it can also be applied to FPGAs. The TMR technique was first tested in the Virtex® FPGA architecture by using a small design based on counters. Faults were injected in all sensitive parts of the FPGA and a detailed analysis of the effect of a fault in a TMR design synthesized in the Virtex® platform was performed. Results from fault injection and from a radiation ground test facility showed the efficiency of the TMR for the related case study circuit. Although TMR has showed a high reliability, this technique presents some limitations, such as area overhead, three times more input and output pins and, consequently, a significant increase in power dissipation. Aiming to reduce TMR costs and improve reliability, an innovative high-level technique for designing fault-tolerant systems in SRAM-based FPGAs was developed, without modification in the FPGA architecture. This technique combines time and hardware redundancy to reduce overhead and to ensure reliability. It is based on duplication with comparison and concurrent error detection. The new technique proposed in this work was specifically developed for FPGAs to cope with transient faults in the user combinational and sequential logic, while also reducing pin count, area and power dissipation. The methodology was validated by fault injection experiments in an emulation board. The thesis presents comparison results in fault coverage, area and performance between the discussed techniques.

ABSTRACT The optimization of system parameters, such as power dissipation, the amount of hardware resources and the memory footprint, has been always a main concern when dealing with the design of resource-constrained embedded systems. This situation is even more demanding nowadays. Embedded systems cannot anymore be considered only as specific-purpose computers, designed for a particular functionality that remains unchanged during their lifetime. Differently, embedded systems are now required to deal with more demanding and complex functions, such as multimedia data processing and high-throughput connectivity. In addition, system operation may depend on external data, the user requirements or internal variables of the system, such as the battery life-time. All these conditions may vary at run-time, leading to adaptive scenarios. As a consequence of both the growing computational complexity and the existence of dynamic requirements, dynamic resource management techniques for embedded systems are needed. Software is inherently flexible, but it cannot meet the computing power offered by hardware solutions. Therefore, reconfigurable hardware emerges as a suitable technology to deal with the run-time variable requirements of complex embedded systems. Adaptive hardware requires the use of reconfigurable devices, where its functionality can be modified on demand. In this thesis, Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) have been selected as the most appropriate commercial technology existing nowadays to implement adaptive hardware systems. There are different ways of exploiting reconfigurability in reconfigurable devices. Among them is dynamic and partial reconfiguration. This is a technique which consists in substituting part of the FPGA logic on demand, while the rest of the device continues working. The strategy followed in this thesis is to exploit the dynamic and partial reconfiguration of commercial FPGAs to deal with the flexibility and complexity demands of state-of-the-art embedded systems. The proposal of this thesis to deal with run-time variable system conditions is the use of spatially scalable processing hardware IP cores, which are able to adapt their functionality or performance at run-time, trading them off with the amount of logic resources they occupy in the device. This is referred to as a scalable footprint in the context of this thesis. The distinguishing characteristic of the proposed cores is that they rely on highly parallel, modular and regular architectures, arranged in one or two dimensions. These architectures can be scaled by means of the addition or removal of the composing blocks. This strategy avoids implementing a full version of the core for each possible size, with the corresponding benefits in terms of scaling and adaptation time, as well as bitstream storage memory requirements. Instead of providing specific-purpose architectures, generic architectural templates, which can be tuned to solve different problems, are proposed in this thesis. Architectures following both systolic and wavefront templates have been selected. Together with the proposed scalable architectural templates, other issues needed to ensure the proper design and operation of the scalable cores, such as the device reconfiguration control, the run-time management of the architecture and the implementation techniques have been also addressed in this thesis. With regard to the implementation of dynamically reconfigurable architectures, device dependent low-level details are addressed. Some of the aspects covered in this thesis are the area constrained routing for reconfigurable modules, or an inter-module communication strategy which does not introduce either extra delay or logic overhead. The system implementation, from the hardware description to the device configuration bitstream, has been fully automated by modifying the netlists corresponding to each of the system modules, which are previously generated using the vendor tools. This modification is therefore envisaged as a post-processing step. Based on these implementation proposals, a design tool called DREAMS (Dynamically Reconfigurable Embedded and Modular Systems) has been created, including a graphic user interface. The tool has specific features to cope with modular and regular architectures, including the support for module relocation and the inter-module communications scheme based on the symmetry of the architecture. The core of the tool is a custom router, which has been also exploited in this thesis to obtain symmetric routed nets, with the aim of enhancing the protection of critical reconfigurable circuits against side channel attacks. This is achieved by duplicating the logic with an exactly equal routing. In order to control the reconfiguration process of the FPGA, a Reconfiguration Engine suited to the specific requirements set by the proposed architectures was also proposed. Therefore, in addition to controlling the reconfiguration port, the Reconfiguration Engine has been enhanced with the online relocation ability, which allows employing a unique configuration bitstream for all the positions where the module may be placed in the device. Differently to the existing relocating solutions, which are based on bitstream parsers, the proposed approach is based on the online composition of bitstreams. This strategy allows increasing the speed of the process, while the length of partial bitstreams is also reduced. The height of the reconfigurable modules can be lower than the height of a clock region. The Reconfiguration Engine manages the merging process of the new and the existing configuration frames within each clock region. The process of scaling up and down the hardware cores also benefits from this technique. A direct link to an external memory where partial bitstreams can be stored has been also implemented. In order to accelerate the reconfiguration process, the ICAP has been overclocked over the speed reported by the manufacturer. In the case of Virtex-5, even though the maximum frequency of the ICAP is reported to be 100 MHz, valid operations at 250 MHz have been achieved, including the online relocation process. Portability of the reconfiguration solution to today's and probably, future FPGAs, has been also considered. The reconfiguration engine can be also used to inject faults in real hardware devices, and this way being able to evaluate the fault tolerance offered by the reconfigurable architectures. Faults are emulated by introducing partial bitstreams intentionally modified to provide erroneous functionality. To prove the validity and the benefits offered by the proposed architectures, two demonstration application lines have been envisaged. First, scalable architectures have been employed to develop an evolvable hardware platform with adaptability, fault tolerance and scalability properties. Second, they have been used to implement a scalable deblocking filter suited to scalable video coding. Evolvable Hardware is the use of evolutionary algorithms to design hardware in an autonomous way, exploiting the flexibility offered by reconfigurable devices. In this case, processing elements composing the architecture are selected from a presynthesized library of processing elements, according to the decisions taken by the algorithm, instead of being decided at design time. This way, the configuration of the array may change as run-time environmental conditions do, achieving autonomous control of the dynamic reconfiguration process. Thus, the self-optimization property is added to the native self-configurability of the dynamically scalable architectures. In addition, evolvable hardware adaptability inherently offers self-healing features. The proposal has proved to be self-tolerant, since it is able to self-recover from both transient and cumulative permanent faults. The proposed evolvable architecture has been used to implement noise removal image filters. Scalability has been also exploited in this application. Scalable evolvable hardware architectures allow the autonomous adaptation of the processing cores to a fluctuating amount of resources available in the system. Thus, it constitutes an example of the dynamic quality scalability tackled in this thesis. Two variants have been proposed. The first one consists in a single dynamically scalable evolvable core, and the second one contains a variable number of processing cores. Scalable video is a flexible approach for video compression, which offers scalability at different levels. Differently to non-scalable codecs, a scalable video bitstream can be decoded with different levels of quality, spatial or temporal resolutions, by discarding the undesired information. The interest in this technology has been fostered by the development of the Scalable Video Coding (SVC) standard, as an extension of H.264/AVC. In order to exploit all the flexibility offered by the standard, it is necessary to adapt the characteristics of the decoder to the requirements of each client during run-time. The use of dynamically scalable architectures is proposed in this thesis with this aim. The deblocking filter algorithm is the responsible of improving the visual perception of a reconstructed image, by smoothing blocking artifacts generated in the encoding loop. This is one of the most computationally intensive tasks of the standard, and furthermore, it is highly dependent on the selected scalability level in the decoder. Therefore, the deblocking filter has been selected as a proof of concept of the implementation of dynamically scalable architectures for video compression. The proposed architecture allows the run-time addition or removal of computational units working in parallel to change its level of parallelism, following a wavefront computational pattern. Scalable architecture is offered together with a scalable parallelization strategy at the macroblock level, such that when the size of the architecture changes, the macroblock filtering order is modified accordingly. The proposed pattern is based on the division of the macroblock processing into two independent stages, corresponding to the horizontal and vertical filtering of the blocks within the macroblock. The main contributions of this thesis are: - The use of highly parallel, modular, regular and local architectures to implement dynamically reconfigurable processing IP cores, for data intensive applications with flexibility requirements. - The use of two-dimensional mesh-type arrays as architectural templates to build dynamically reconfigurable IP cores, with a scalable footprint. The proposal consists in generic architectural templates, which can be tuned to solve different computational problems. •A design flow and a tool targeting the design of DPR systems, focused on highly parallel, modular and local architectures. - An inter-module communication strategy, which does not introduce delay or area overhead, named Virtual Borders. - A custom and flexible router to solve the routing conflicts as well as the inter-module communication problems, appearing during the design of DPR systems. - An algorithm addressing the optimization of systems composed of multiple scalable cores, which size can be decided individually, to optimize the system parameters. It is based on a model known as the multi-dimensional multi-choice Knapsack problem. - A reconfiguration engine tailored to the requirements of highly regular and modular architectures. It combines a high reconfiguration throughput with run-time module relocation capabilities, including the support for sub-clock reconfigurable regions and the replication in multiple positions. - A fault injection mechanism which takes advantage of the system reconfiguration engine, as well as the modularity of the proposed reconfigurable architectures, to evaluate the effects of transient and permanent faults in these architectures. - The demonstration of the possibilities of the architectures proposed in this thesis to implement evolvable hardware systems, while keeping a high processing throughput. - The implementation of scalable evolvable hardware systems, which are able to adapt to the fluctuation of the amount of resources available in the system, in an autonomous way. - A parallelization strategy for the H.264/AVC and SVC deblocking filter, which reduces the number of macroblock cycles needed to process the whole frame. - A dynamically scalable architecture that permits the implementation of a novel deblocking filter module, fully compliant with the H.264/AVC and SVC standards, which exploits the macroblock level parallelism of the algorithm. This document is organized in seven chapters. In the first one, an introduction to the technology framework of this thesis, specially focused on dynamic and partial reconfiguration, is provided. The need for the dynamically scalable processing architectures proposed in this work is also motivated in this chapter. In chapter 2, dynamically scalable architectures are described. Description includes most of the architectural contributions of this work. The design flow tailored to the scalable architectures, together with the DREAMs tool provided to implement them, are described in chapter 3. The reconfiguration engine is described in chapter 4. The use of the proposed scalable archtieectures to implement evolvable hardware systems is described in chapter 5, while the scalable deblocking filter is described in chapter 6. Final conclusions of this thesis, and the description of future work, are addressed in chapter 7.

Software-based techniques offer several advantages to increase the reliability of processor-based systems at very low cost, but they cause performance degradation and an increase of the code size. To meet constraints in performance and memory, we propose SETA, a new control-flow software-only technique that uses assertions to detect errors affecting the program flow. SETA is an independent technique, but it was conceived to work together with previously proposed data-flow techniques that aim at reducing performance and memory overheads. Thus, SETA is combined with such data-flow techniques and submitted to a fault injection campaign. Simulation and neutron induced SEE tests show high fault coverage at performance and memory overheads inferior to the state-of-the-art.

This paper presents a methodology to emulate Single Event Upsets (SEUs) in FPGA flip-flops (FFs). Since the content of a FF is not modifiable through the FPGA configuration memory bits, a dedicated design is required for fault injection in the FFs. The method proposed in this paper is a hybrid approach that combines FPGA partial reconfiguration and extra logic added to the circuit under test, without modifying its operation. This approach has been integrated into a fault-injection platform, named NESSY (Non intrusive ErrorS injection SYstem), developed by our research group. Finally, this paper includes results on a Virtex-5 FPGA demonstrating the validity of the method on the ITC’99 benchmark set and a Feed-Forward Equalization (FFE) filter. In comparison with other approaches in the literature, this methodology reduces the resource consumption introduced to carry out the fault injection in FFs, at the cost of adding very little time overhead (1.6 μs per fault).

In this paper we present an experimental validation of the reliability increase of digital circuits implemented in XilinxTMFPGAs when they are implemented using the DSPs (Digital Signal Processors) that are available in the reconfigurable device. For this purpose, we have used a fault-injection platform developed by our research group, NESSY [1]. The presented experiments demonstrate that the probability of occurrence of a SEU effect is similar both in the circuits implemented with and without using embedded DSPs. However, the former are more efficient in terms of area usage, which leads to a decrease in the probability of a SEU occurrence.

From the end of 2013 and during the following two years, 20 kt of CO2sc are planned to be injected in a saline reservoir (1500 m depth) at the Hontomín site (NE Spain). The target aquifers are Lower Jurassic limestone formations which are sealed by Lower Cretaceous clay units at the Hontomín site (NE Spain). The injection of CO2 is part of the activities committed in the Technology Development phase of the EC-funded OXYCFB300 project (European Energy Program for Recovery – EEPR, http://www.compostillaproject.eu), which include CO2 injection strategies, risk assessment, and testing and validating monitoring methodologies and techniques. Among the monitoring works, the project is intended to prove that present-day technology is able to monitor the evolution of injected CO2 in the reservoir and to detect potential leakage. One of the techniques is the measurement of CO2 flux at the soil–atmosphere interface, which includes campaigns before, during and after the injection operations. In this work soil CO2 flux measurements in the vicinity of oil borehole, drilled in the eighties and named H-1 to H-4, and injection and monitoring wells were performed using an accumulation chamber equipped with an IR sensor. Seven surveys were carried out from November 2009 to summer 2011. More than 4000 measurements were used to determine the baseline flux of CO2 and its seasonal variations. The measured values were low (from 5 to 13 g m−2 day−1) and few outliers were identified, mainly located close to the H-2 oil well. Nevertheless, these values cannot be associated to a deep source of CO2, being more likely related to biological processes, i.e. soil respiration. No anomalies were recognized close to the deep fault system (Ubierna Fault) detected by geophysical investigations. There, the CO2 flux is indeed as low as other measurement stations. CO2 fluxes appear to be controlled by the biological activity since the lowest values were recorded during autumn-winter seasons and they tend to increase in warm periods. Two reference CO2 flux values (UCL50 of 5 g m−2 d−1 for non-ploughed areas in autumn–winter seasons and 3.5 and 12 g m−2 d−1 for in ploughed and non-ploughed areas, respectively, in spring–summer time, and UCL99 of 26 g m−2 d−1 for autumn–winter in not-ploughed areas and 34 and 42 g m−2 d−1 for spring–summer in ploughed and not-ploughed areas, respectively) were calculated. Fluxes higher than these reference values could be indicative of possible leakage during the operational and post-closure stages of the storage project.

ABSTRACT One of the most common faults in synchronous generators is the ground fault in both the stator winding and the excitation winding. In case of fault, the insulation level between the active part of any of these windings and ground lowers considerably, or even disappears. The detection of ground faults in both windings is a very researched topic. The fault current is typically limited intentionally to a reduced level. This allows to detect easily the ground faults, and therefore to avoid damage in the generator. After the detection and confirmation of the existence of a ground fault, it should be located along the winding in order to repair of the machine. Then, the rotor has to be extracted, which is a very complex and expensive operation. Moreover, the fact of limiting the fault current makes that the insulation failure is not visually detectable, because there is no visible damage in the generator. Therefore, some laborious techniques have to apply to locate accurately the fault. In order to reduce the repair time, and therefore the time that the generator is out of service, any information about the approximate location of the fault would be very useful. The main objective of this doctoral thesis has been the development of new algorithms and methods to estimate the location of ground faults in the stator and in the rotor winding of synchronous generators. Regarding the excitation winding, a new location method of ground faults in excitation winding of synchronous machines with static excitation has been presented. This method allows even to detect if the fault is at the excitation winding, or in any other component of the excitation system: controlled rectifier, excitation transformer, etc. In case of ground fault in the rotor winding, this method provides an estimation of the fault location. However, in order to calculate the location, the value of fault resistance is necessary. Therefore, a new fault-resistance estimation algorithm is presented in this text. Finally, a new fault detection algorithm based on directional criterion is described to complement the fault location method. This algorithm takes into account the influence of the capacitance-to-ground of the system, which has a remarkable impact in the accuracy of the fault location. Regarding the stator winding, a new fault-location algorithm has been presented for stator winding of synchronous generators. This algorithm is applicable to generators with ground-fault protection based in low-frequency injection. A general algorithm, which takes every parameter of the system into account, has been presented. Moreover, a simplified version of the algorithm has been proposed for generators with especially low value of capacitance to ground. This simplified algorithm might be easily implementable in protective relays. The proposed methods and algorithms have been tested in a 5 kVA laboratory generator, as well as in a 106 MVA synchronous generator with satisfactory and promising results.
