Studies on redox supercapacitors employing electronically conducting polymers are of great importance for hybrid power sources and pulse power applications. In the present study, polyaniline (PANI) has been potentiodynamically deposited on stainless steel substrate and characterized in a gel polymer electrolyte (GPE). Use of the GPE facilitates a voltage limit of the capacitor to 1 V, instead of 0.75 V in aqueous electrolytes. From charge-discharge studies of the solid-state PANI capacitors, a specific capacitance of 250 F g(-1) has been obtained at a specific power of 7.5 kW kg(-1) of PANI. The values of specific capacitance and specific power are considerably higher than those reported in the literature. High energy and high power characteristics of the PANI are presented. The activities of CaO and Al2O3 in lime-alumina melts were studied by Knudsen cell-mass spectrometry at 2060 K. Emf of solid state cells, with CaF2 as the electrolyte, was measured from 923 to 1223 K to obtain the free energies of formation of the interoxide compounds. The results are critically evaluated in the light of data reported in the literature on phase equilibria, activities in melts, and stabilities of compounds. A coherent set of data is presented, including the previously unknown free energy of formation of CaO.6Al2O3 and the temperature dependence of activities in the liquid phase.

The Zn-CeO 2 composite coatings through electrodeposition technique were successfully fabricated on mild steel substrate. As a comparison pure zinc coating was also prepared. The concentration of CeO 2 nanoparticles was varied in the electrolytic bath and the composites were electrodeposited both in the presence and absence of cetyltriammonium bromide (CTAB). The performance of the CeO 2 nanoparticles towards the deposition, crystal structure, texture, surface morphology and electrochemical corrosion behavior was studied. For characterizations of the electrodeposits, the techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used. Both the additives ceria and surfactant polarize the reduction processes and thus influence the deposition process, surface nature and the electrochemical properties. The electrochemical experiments like potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (EIS) studies carried out in 3.5 wt. TIN thin films with (200) fibre texture are deposited on Cu substrate at room temperature using reactive magnetron sputtering. They exhibit a discharge capacity of 172 mu Ah cm(-2) mu m(-1) (300 mAh g(-1)) in a non-aqueous electrolyte containing a Li salt. There is a graded decrease in discharge capacity when cycled between 0.01 and 3.0 V. Electron microscopy investigations indicate significant changes in surface morphology of the cycled TiN electrodes in comparison with the as deposited TiN films. From XPS depth profile analysis, it is inferred that Li intercalated TIN films consist of lithium compounds, hydroxyl groups, titanium sub oxides and TiN. Lithium diffusivity and reactivity decrease with increase in depth and the major reaction with lithium takes place at film surface and grain boundaries. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The electrochemistry of disulfide in cytochrome c on gold electrodes was reported. The observed electrochemical response was used to explain why the electrochemical reaction of cytochrome c is irreversible at gold electrodes. Disulfide bonds in cytochrome c were strongly adsorbed onto the surface of gold electrodes and caused slow rate of electron transfer of the heme group. It was found that the presence of disulfides in cytochrome c was responsible for the lack of electrochemical response of the heme group on a gold electrode. The mechanisms for this effect were studied using electrochemistry and photoelectron spectroscopy. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

An electrode modified with a polybasic lanthanide heteropoly tungstate/molybdate complex K10H3[Nd(SiMo7W4O39)(2)] entrapped into polypyrrole (PPy) film, denoted as Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)-PPy, exhibits three couples of two-electron redox waves in pH 1-5 buffer solutions. The redox waves are surface-controlled at lower scan rates and diffusion-controlled at higher scan rates. The effects of pH on the electrochemical behavior of Nd(SiMo7W4)(2) in PPy film were investigated in detail and compared with that of Nd(SiMo7W4)(2) in aqueous solution. The various charge states of PPy during its redox process have peculiar effects on the relationship between pH and formal potentials of Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)-PPy at different acidities. The Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)-PPy cme can remarkably catalyze the electrochemical reduction of bromate with good stability. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Cyclic voltammetry was employed to study the influence of sterols on the lipophilic ion transport through the BLM. The mole fraction of the sterols (cholesterol, oxidized cholesterol). as referred to total lipid, was varied in a range of 0-0.8. Data demonstrate that a thin-layer model is suitable to this BLM system. By this model, the number of charges transported per lipophilic ion, the concentration of the ion in the membrane bulk phase and the aqueous/membrane phase partition coefficient could be calculated. These parameters proved that sterols had an obvious influence on the lipophilic ion transport. Cholesterol had a stronger influence on the ion transport than oxidized cholesterol. Its incorporation into egg lecithin membranes increased the partition coefficient beta of the ion up to more than 3-fold. Yet, oxidized cholesterol incorporated into egg lecithin membranes only increased the beta up to less than 2-fold, and the beta had no great variation at different oxidized cholesterol mole fractions. The higher beta obtained was partly due to the trace amount of solvent existing in the core of the lipid bilayers. At the different sterol mole fractions, combining the change of beta with the change of peak current, we also concluded that sterols had somewhat inhibiting effect on the ion transport at the higher sterols mole fraction (>0.4). These results are explained in terms of the possible change of dipole potential of the membrane produced by sterols and the decrease of the membrane fluidity caused by the condensation effect of sterols and the thinning effect caused by sterols. The substituting group (in the oxidized cholesterol) had some inhibiting effects on the ion transport at higher mole fractions (oxidized cholesterol mole fraction >0.4).

For the first time, the electrochemistry of gold has been studied in detail in a 'second-generation', non-haloaluminate, ionic liquid. In particular, the electrochemical behaviour of Na[AuCl4] has been investigated in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis{(tifluoromethyl)sulfonyl} imide, [C(4)mim][NTf2], over gold, platinum and glassy carbon working electrodes. The reduction of [AuCl4](-) initially forms [AuCl2](-) before deposition on the electrode as Au(0). To enable stripping of deposited gold or electrodissolution of bulk gold, the presence of chloride, trichloride or chlorine is required. Specifically trichloride and chlorine have been identified as the active species which preferentially form Au(I) and Au(III), respectively.
