The role of academic community in higher learning : Alternatives to a drive-thru education

The purpose of our paper is to illustrate the fundamental importance of developing academic community among first year students. We argue that a sense of academic community is of fundamental importance in combating the effects of the neo-liberal economic discourse on higher education, and that the values of higher education are incongruent with those of economic rationalism. The discursive commodification of the student, and of education itself, works against the formation of community, both within the university environment and in the wider society. We argue that, at present, the dominant discourse shaping the social practice of higher education is that of neo-liberal economics. Community values stand in opposition to the dominant discourse, and are integral to the long-term survival of a socially critical and socially responsive society. We conclude that the importance of establishing a sense of academic community during the first year of university is justified by its ultimate value to society.

Drive-Thru Hot Beverages: Still a Risk?

Stella Liebeck brought to light the risk for operators who serve hot beverages through their drive-thru windows when she successfully sued McDonald’s in 1994 for the burns she received when coffee spilled in her lap. The current study replicated 1998 research on a national level, where 1,585 coffee temperatures collected from drive-thru windows were analyzed to determine if operators had lowered their coffee temperatures as a result of this widely-publicized case.

Customer Perception of Drive-Thru Service

The rapid growth of off-premise dining and, consequently, drive- thru service, presents the challenge of building customer loyalty in a highly competitive marketplace. In this study, customer perceptions of drive-thru service associated with quick service restaurants were examined. Results suggest that service time appears to differ among quick service restaurants, even those within the same chain. Employee courtesy was rated positively at all restaurants, as was food quality. The implications of these results for restaurateurs who offer drive-thru service are discussed.

Medicines information sources and services for consumers : A special focus on the Internet and people with depression

The range of consumer health and medicines information sources has diversified along with the increased use of the Internet. This has led to a drive to develop medicines information services and to better incorporate the Internet and e-mail into routine practice in health care and in community pharmacies. To support the development of such services more information is needed about the use of online information by consumers, particularly of those who may be the most likely to use and to benefit from the new sources and modes of medicines communication. This study explored the role and utilization of the Internet-based medicines information and information services in the context of a wider network of information sources accessible to the public in Finland. The overall aim was to gather information to develop better and more accessible sources of information for consumers and services to better meet the needs of consumers. Special focus was on the needs and information behavior among people with depression and using antidepressant medicines. This study applied both qualitative and quantitative methods. Consumer medicines information needs and sources were identified by analyzing the utilization of the University Pharmacy operated national drug information call center (Study I) and surveying Finnish adults (n=2348) use of the different medicines information sources (Study II). The utilization of the Internet as a source of antidepressant information among people with depression was explored by focus group discussions among people with depression and with current or past use of the antidepressant(s) (n=29, Studies III & IV). Pharmacy response to the needs of consumers in term of providing e-mail counseling was assessed by conducting a virtual pseudo customer study among the Finnish community pharmacies (n=161, Study V). Physicians and pharmacists were the primary sources of medicines information. People with mental disorders were more frequent users of telephone- and Internet-based medicines information sources and patient information leaflets than people without mental disorders. These sources were used to complement rather than replace information provided face-to-face by health professionals. People with depression used the Internet to seek facts about antidepressants, to share experiences with peers, and for the curiosity. They described that the access to online drug information was empowering. Some people reported lacking the skills necessary to assess the quality of online information. E-mail medication counseling services provided by community pharmacies were rare and varied in quality. Study results suggest that rather than discouraging the use of the Internet, health professionals should direct patients to use accurate and reliable sources of online medicines information. Health care providers, including community pharmacies should also seek to develop new ways of communicating information about medicines with consumers. This study determined that people with depression and using antidepressants need services enabling interactive communication not only with health care professionals, but also with peers. Further research should be focused on developing medicines information service facilitating communication among different patient and consumer groups.

Control of a high Precision Double Drive

The speed control system for a concept for cost effective drives with high precision is presented. The drive concept consists of two parallel working drives. The concept is an alternative to direct drives. One big advantage is the use of standard gear boxes with economical components. This paper deals with the control of the drive system consisting of two parts: one drive produces the power for the machine, another drive makes the motion precice and dynamic. Both drives are combined to one double drive by a control system. The drive system is usefull for printing machines and other machines with high power consumption at a nearly constant speed and high accuracy requirements. The calculation for a drive system with 37 kW shows, that the control drive has to supply only about 20 % of the total torque and power needed to compensate the errors of the power drive. The stability of the system is shown by a simulation of the double drive.

Les stratégies organisationnelles de gestion des rumeurs sur Internet : une analyse ventriloque

Le présent mémoire porte sur les stratégies de gestion de rumeurs par les organisations sur Internet et sur les réseaux sociaux. Il se veut une étude dite « ventriloque » des figures d’autorité mises en présence par les organisations et les internautes à travers leurs interactions. L'objectif de cette recherche est ainsi d’étudier les stratégies employées par les organisations pour gérer les rumeurs sur Internet et d’observer les interactions entre l’organisation et ses consommateurs afin de comprendre le rapport des organisations avec leurs consommateurs, réels ou potentiels, grâce aux figures mises en scène et invoquées dans leurs stratégies. Comme nous le montrons dans nos analyses, les organisations mettent en scène une multitude de figures d’autorité pour convaincre leurs consommateurs. En même temps, elles se positionnent comme sujettes à des agentivités qui sont contextuelles aux rumeurs auxquelles elles font face. De la même façon, les internautes mettent en scène les préoccupations qui les animent. Les dialogues entre organisations et internautes reflètent différentes relations entre ces deux parties. En particulier, nous montrons que les organisations n’interagissent pas toutes de la même manière avec les internautes. Cette analyse s’appuie sur des données récoltées sur les sites internet des organisations étudiées et sur les réseaux Facebook et Twitter.

Imbalanced functional link between executive control network and reward network explain the online-game seeking behaviors in Internet gaming disorder

Literatures have shown that Internet gaming disorder (IGD) subjects show impaired executive control and enhanced reward sensitivities than healthy controls. However, how these two networks jointly affect the valuation process and drive IGD subjects' online-game-seeking behaviors remains unknown. Thirty-five IGD and 36 healthy controls underwent a resting-states scan in the MRI scanner. Functional connectivity (FC) was examined within control and reward network seeds regions, respectively. Nucleus accumbens (NAcc) was selected as the node to find the interactions between these two networks. IGD subjects show decreased FC in the executive control network and increased FC in the reward network when comparing with the healthy controls. When examining the correlations between the NAcc and the executive control/reward networks, the link between the NAcc - executive control network is negatively related with the link between NAcc - reward network. The changes (decrease/increase) in IGD subjects' brain synchrony in control/reward networks suggest the inefficient/overly processing within neural circuitry underlying these processes. The inverse proportion between control network and reward network in IGD suggest that impairments in executive control lead to inefficient inhibition of enhanced cravings to excessive online game playing. This might shed light on the mechanistic understanding of IGD.

Evolving Future Internet clean-slate Entity Title Architecture with quality-oriented control-plane extensions

A Internet atual vem sofrendo vários problemas em termos de escalabilidade, desempenho, mobilidade, etc., devido ao vertiginoso incremento no número de usuários e o surgimento de novos serviços com novas demandas, propiciando assim o nascimento da Internet do Futuro. Novas propostas sobre redes orientadas a conteúdo, como a arquitetura Entidade Titulo (ETArch), proveem novos serviços para este tipo de cenários, implementados sobre o paradigma de redes definidas por software. Contudo, o modelo de transporte do ETArch é equivalente ao modelo best-effort da Internet atual, e vem limitando a confiabilidade das suas comunicações. Neste trabalho, ETArch é redesenhado seguindo o paradigma do sobreaprovisionamento de recursos para conseguir uma alocação de recursos avançada integrada com OpenFlow. Como resultado, o framework SMART (Suporte de Sessões Móveis com Alta Demanda de Recursos de Transporte), permite que a rede defina semanticamente os requisitos qualitativos das sessões para assim gerenciar o controle de Qualidade de Serviço visando manter a melhor Qualidade de Experiência possível. A avaliação do planos de dados e de controle teve lugar na plataforma de testes na ilha do projeto OFELIA, mostrando o suporte de aplicações móveis multimídia com alta demanda de recursos de transporte com QoS e QoE garantidos através de um esquema de sinalização restrito em comparação com o ETArch legado

In-process thermal damage detection in grinding with monitoring via Internet

This work aims the development of a dedicated system for detection of burning in surface grinding process, where the process will constantly be monitored through the acoustic emission and electric power of the induction motor drive. Acquired by an analog-digital converter, algorithms process the signals and a control signal is generated to inform the operator or interrupt the process in case of burning occurrence. Moreover, the system makes possible the process monitoring via Internet. Additionally, a comparative study between parameters DPO and FKS is carried through. In the experimental work one type of. steel (ABNT-1020 annealed) and one type of grinding wheel referred to as TARGA, model ART 3TG80.3 NVHB, were employed.

La caratteristica principale è l'integrazione delle funzionalità di Google Drive permettendo all'utente di archiviare e condividere con pochi click le fatture con i clienti. L'utente potrà creare, personalizzare, salvare, archiviare e condividere le proprie ricevute in tempo reale. In questo documento verrà analizzato il processo di sviluppo del software che comprenderà: analisi dei requisiti, progettazione, sviluppo (scelte implementative), test e sviluppi futuri. Verranno anche documentate le tecnologie utilizzate al fine di raggiungere il prodotto finale.
