This article describes a project to unwrap an ancient Egyptian mummy using X-ray computed tomography (CT). About 600 X-ray CT images were obtained through the mummified body of a female named Tjetmutjengebtiu (or Jeni for short), who was a singer in the great temple of Karnak in Egypt during the 22nd dynasty (c. 945-715 BC). The X-ray CT images reveal details of the remains of body organs, wrappings and jewellery. 3D reconstructions of Jeni’s teeth suggest that she was probably only around 20 years old when she died, although the cause of death cannot be ascertained from the CT scans. The CT images were used to build a 3D model of Jeni’s head which enabled an artist to paint a picture of what Jeni may have looked like during life. A PowerPoint presentation and movie clips are provided as supplementary material that may be useful for teaching.

Up to 30% of young people drink at risky levels at least weekly. Yet, many do not view their alcohol use as problematic and focus only on its enjoyment and socialization benefits. Innovative, youth-friendly and highly accessible ways of delivering preventative health messages are required. This paper describes the design, development and prototype testing of ‘Ray’s Night Out’ a new iPhone application for promoting harm minimisation and controlled drinking strategies in young people. Two participatory design workshops were conducted with 5 young people to explore how technology could be used to enhance a good night out drinking. Four existing iPhone alcohol apps were reviewed. Five young people conducted initial prototype testing to refine app content and interface design. Final prototype testing was conducted with 10 young people. Prototype testing indicated young people had a very positive response to the Ray animated character and rated the app highly on aesthetics, engagement, content, functionality, usefulness and youth relevance. The Ray app provides a youth friendly approach to addressing alcohol misuse in young people. The impact of the Ray app on young people’s alcohol use knowledge, attitudes and behaviours is currently being evaluated.

INTRODUCTION Radiological evaluation of the paediatric cervical spine can be a challenge due to the normal anatomic variants and injuries that are unique to children. We aimed to identify the usefulness of plain X-rays in comparison with CT and MRI in diagnosing Paediatric cervical spinal injuries. METHODS Retrospective review of imaging studies of children diagnosed with paediatric cervical spine injuries who had presented to two tertiary hospitals in Queensland. RESULTS There were 38 patients with 18 male and 20 female .The mean age was 8.6 years. Plain Cervical Spine X-rays (3views, AP lateral and open mouth views) were done in 34 patients. The remaining 8 children had a suspected head injury and hence had CT scans of their neck done at the time of CT head scan. Of these images taken, X-rays were diagnostic in 28 (82%) patients. CONCLUSION X- Rays still have a role to play in the diagnosis of pediatric cervical spinal injuries and should be considered as the first line in fully conscious patients and their usefulness should not be overlooked in light of the newer imaging modalities.

The recently introduced generalized pencil of Sudarshan which gives an exact ray picture of wave optics is analysed in some situations of interest to wave optics. A relationship between ray dispersion and statistical inhomogeneity of the field is obtained. A paraxial approximation which preserves the rectilinear propagation character of the generalized pencils is presented. Under this approximation the pencils can be computed directly from the field conditions on a plane, without the necessity to compute the cross-spectral density function in the entire space as an intermediate quantity. The paraxial results are illustrated with examples. The pencils are shown to exhibit an interesting scaling behaviour in the far-zone. This scaling leads to a natural generalization of the Fraunhofer range criterion and of the classical van Cittert-Zernike theorem to planar sources of arbitrary state of coherence. The recently derived results of radiometry with partially coherent sources are shown to be simple consequences of this scaling.

Since the first investigation 25 years ago, the application of genetic tools to address ecological and evolutionary questions in elasmobranch studies has greatly expanded. Major developments in genetic theory as well as in the availability, cost effectiveness and resolution of genetic markers were instrumental for particularly rapid progress over the last 10 years. Genetic studies of elasmobranchs are of direct importance and have application to fisheries management and conservation issues such as the definition of management units and identification of species from fins. In the future, increased application of the most recent and emerging technologies will enable accelerated genetic data production and the development of new markers at reduced costs, paving the way for a paradigm shift from gene to genome-scale research, and more focus on adaptive rather than just neutral variation. Current literature is reviewed in six fields of elasmobranch molecular genetics relevant to fisheries and conservation management (species identification, phylogeography, philopatry, genetic effective population size, molecular evolutionary rate and emerging methods). Where possible, examples from the Indo-Pacific region, which has been underrepresented in previous reviews, are emphasized within a global perspective. Hydrophobins are a group of particularly surface active proteins. The surface activity is demonstrated in the ready adsorption of hydrophobins to hydrophobic/hydrophilic interfaces such as the air/water interface. Adsorbed hydrophobins self-assemble into ordered films, lower the surface tension of water, and stabilize air bubbles and foams. Hydrophobin proteins originate from filamentous fungi. In the fungi the adsorbed hydrophobin films enable the growth of fungal aerial structures, form protective coatings and mediate the attachment of fungi to solid surfaces. This thesis focuses on hydrophobins HFBI, HFBII, and HFBIII from a rot fungus Trichoderma reesei. The self-assembled hydrophobin films were studied both at the air/water interface and on a solid substrate. In particular, using grazing-incidence x-ray diffraction and reflectivity, it was possible to characterize the hydrophobin films directly at the air/water interface. The in situ experiments yielded information on the arrangement of the protein molecules in the films. All the T. reesei hydrophobins were shown to self-assemble into highly crystalline, hexagonally ordered rafts. The thicknesses of these two-dimensional protein crystals were below 30 Å. Similar films were also obtained on silicon substrates. The adsorption of the proteins is likely to be driven by the hydrophobic effect, but the self-assembly into ordered films involves also specific protein-protein interactions. The protein-protein interactions lead to differences in the arrangement of the molecules in the HFBI, HFBII, and HFBIII protein films, as seen in the grazing-incidence x-ray diffraction data. The protein-protein interactions were further probed in solution using small-angle x-ray scattering. Both HFBI and HFBII were shown to form mainly tetramers in aqueous solution. By modifying the solution conditions and thereby the interactions, it was shown that the association was due to the hydrophobic effect. The stable tetrameric assemblies could tolerate heating and changes in pH. The stability of the structure facilitates the persistence of these secreted proteins in the soil.

We study the orbital modulation of X-rays from Cyg X-3, using data from Swift, INTEGRAL and RXTE. Using the wealth of data presently available and an improved averaging method, we obtain energy-dependent folded and averaged light curves with unprecedented accuracy. We find that above similar to 5?keV the modulation depth decreases with increasing energy, which is consistent with the modulation being caused by both boundfree absorption and Compton scattering in the stellar wind of the donor, with minima corresponding to the highest optical depth, which occurs around the superior conjunction. We find a decrease of the depth below similar to 3?keV, which appears to be due to re-emission of the absorbed continuum by the wind in soft X-ray lines. Based on the shape of the folded light curves, any X-ray contribution from the jet in Cyg X-3, which emits ?-rays detected at energies >0.1?GeV in the soft spectral states, is found to be minor up to similar to 100?keV. This implies the presence of a rather sharp low-energy break in the jet MeV-range spectrum. We also calculate phase-resolved RXTE X-ray spectra and show that the difference between the spectra corresponding to phases around superior and inferior conjunctions can indeed be accounted for by the combined effect of boundfree absorption in an ionized medium and Compton scattering.

Existing models of baroclinic tides are based upon the "traditional approximation'', i. e., neglect of the horizontal component of the Earth's rotation, leading to a well- known conclusion that no freely propagating internal waves can exist beyond the critical latitude and the wave rays are symmetric to the vertical. However, recent studies have contended that the situation may change if both the vertical and horizontal components of the Earth's rotation are taken into account. With the full account of the Coriolis force, characteristics of the internal wavefield generated by tidal flow over uneven topography are investigated. It is found that "nontraditional effects'' profoundly change not only the dynamics of internal waves but also the rate at which the barotropic tidal energy is fed into the internal wavefield. Discarding the traditional approximation, internal waves are proved to be able to generate poleward of the critical latitude, rays of which are no longer symmetric and the limiting values of ray angles become greater or less than 90 degrees, depending on the local latitude and the direction of ray. More importantly, in contrast to the predictions of models based upon the traditional approximation, a substantial conversion occurs in the situations when stratification is so weak that the buoyancy frequency is below the tidal one.

X-ray phase imaging with illumination by a partially coherent source with a setup similar to in-line holography is considered. Using the optical transform function, we consider the effects of partial coherence on this x-ray phase imaging for a weak phase object. The optimal contrast and the resolution of phase imaging are analyzed. As the coherence decreases, the imaging contrast and the optimal contrast frequency decrease, and the resolution degrades. It is shown that this contrast-enhanced phase-imaging method can be regarded as a linear bandpass filter and that the bandwidth and the image contrast are changeable. The frequency property of the imaging system can be improved if an incoherent x-ray source with the proper shape is used. (C) 1999 Optical Society of America.

The isotopic composition of hydrogen and helium in solar cosmic rays provides a means of studying solar flare particle acceleration mechanisms since the enhanced relative abundance of rare isotopes, such as 2H, 3H and 3He, is due to their production by inelastic nuclear collisions in the solar atmosphere during the flare. In this work the Caltech Electron/Isotope Spectrometer on the IMP-7 spacecraft has been used to measure this isotopic composition. The response of the dE/dx-E particle telescope is discussed and alpha particle channeling in thin detectors is identified as an important background source affecting measurement of low values of (3He/4He).

The following flare-averaged results are obtained for the period, October, 1972 - November, 1973: (2H/1H) = 7+10-6 X 10-6 (1.6 - 8.6 MeV/nuc), (3H/1H) less than 3.4 x 10-6 (1.2 - 6.8 MeV/nuc), (3He/4He) = (9 ± 4) x 10-3, (3He/1H) = (1.7 ± 0.7) x 10-4 (3.1 - 15.0 MeV/nuc). The deuterium and tritium ratios are significantly lower than the same ratios at higher energies, suggesting that the deuterium and tritium spectra are harder than that of the protons. They are, however, consistent with the same thin target model relativistic path length of ~ 1 g/cm2 (or equivalently ~ 0.3 g/cm2 at 30 MeV/nuc) which is implied by the higher energy results. The 3He results, consistent with previous observations, would imply a path length at least 3 times as long, but the observations may be contaminated by small 3He rich solar events.

During 1973 three "3He rich events," containing much more 3He than 2H or 3H were observed on 14 February, 29 June and 5 September. Although the total production cross sections for 2H,3H and 3He are comparable, an upper limit to (2H/3He) and (3H/3He) was 0.053 (2.9-6.8 MeV/nuc), summing over the three events. This upper limit is marginally consistent with Ramaty and Kozlovsky's thick target model which accounts for such events by the nuclear reaction kinematics and directional properties of the flare acceleration process. The 5 September event was particularly significant in that much more 3He was observed than 4He and the fluxes of 3He and 1H were about equal. The range of (3He/4He) for such events reported to date is 0.2 to ~ 6 while (3He/1H) extends from 10-3 to ~ 1. The role of backscattered and mirroring protons and alphas in accounting for such variations is discussed.

The isotopic composition of the enhanced low energy nitrogen and oxygen cosmic rays can provide information regarding the source of these particles. Using the Caltech Electron/Isotope Spectrometer aboard the IMP-7 satellite, a measurement of this isotopic composition was made. To determine the isotope response of the instrument, a calibration was performed, and it was determined that the standard range-energy tables were inadequate to calculate the isotope response. From the calibration, corrections to the standard range-energy tables were obtained which can be used to calculate the isotope response of this and similar instruments.

The low energy nitrogen and oxygen cosmic rays were determined to be primarily ^(14)N and ^(16)O. Upper limits were obtained for the abundances of the other stable nitrogen and oxygen isotopes. To the 84% confidence level the isotopic abundances are: ^(15)N/N ≤ 0.26 (5.6- 12.7 MeV/nucleon), ^(17)0/0 ≤ 0.13 (7.0- 11.8 MeV/nucleon), (18)0/0 ≤ 0.12 (7.0 - 11.2 MeV/nucleon). The nitrogen composition differs from higher energy measurements which indicate that ^(15)N, which is thought to be secondary, is the dominant isotope. This implies that the low energy enhanced cosmic rays are not part of the same population as the higher energy cosmic rays and that they have not passed through enough material to produce a large fraction of ^(15)N. The isotopic composition of the low energy enhanced nitrogen and oxygen is consistent with the local acceleration theory of Fisk, Kozlovsky, and Ramaty, in which interstellar material is accelerated to several MeV/nucleon. If, on the other hand, the low energy nitrogen and oxygen result from nucleosynthesis in a galactic source, then the nucleosynthesis processes which produce an enhancement of nitrogen and oxygen and a depletion of carbon are restricted to producing predominantly ^(14)N and ^(16)O.

The propagation of cosmic rays through interstellar space has been investigated with the view of determining what particles can traverse astronomical distances without serious loss of energy. The principal method of loss of energy of high energy particles is by interaction with radiation. It is found that high energy (1013-1018ev) electrons drop to one-tenth their energy in 108 light years in the radiation density in the galaxy and that protons are not significantly affected in this distance. The origin of the cosmic rays is not known so that various hypotheses as to their origin are examined. If the source is near a star it is found that the interaction of electrons and photons with the stellar radiation field and the interaction of electrons with the stellar magnetic field limit the amount of energy which these particles can carry away from the star. However, the interaction is not strong enough to affect the energy of protons or light nuclei appreciably. The chief uncertainty in the results is due to the possible existence of general galactic magnetic field. The main conclusion reached is that if there is a general galactic magnetic field, then the primary spectrum has very few photons, only low energy (˂ 1013 ev) electrons and the higher energy particles are primarily protons regardless of the source mechanism, and if there is no general galactic magnetic field, then the source of cosmic rays accelerates mainly protons and the present rate of production is much less than that in the past.
