Spillover processes (i.e. the migration of ionic species from the support to the catalyst and vice versa) are known to play a very important role in catalysis and electrocatalysis. These spillover processes can be influenced by impurities (pre-existing on the catalyst surface) and by the catalyst morphology that may differ as a result of the differences in catalyst manufacturing processes. This work investigates the influence of impurities present in three commercial platinum (Pt) precursors. The resulting platinum films studied here were supported on yttria-stabilised-zirconia (YSZ). It was found that the three different catalyst films contained a range of impurities (determined by ICP-OES) that appear to affect the oxygen charge transfer reaction as studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV). © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

The reaction between an 11 nm Ni(10 at.% Pt) film on a Si substrate has been examined by in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), atom probe tomography (APT) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In situ XRD experiments show the unusual formation of a phase without an XRD peak through consumption of the metal. According to APT, this phase has an Si concentration gradient in accordance with the θ-Ni2Si metastable phase. TEM analysis confirms the direct formation of θ-Ni2Si in epitaxy on Si(1 0 0) with two variants of the epitaxial relationship. © 2014 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Electrochemical decolourisation of Reactive Orange 16 was carried out in an electrochemical flow-cell, using as working electrodes a Pt thin film deposited on a Ti substrate (Pt/Ti) prepared by the Pechini method and a pure platinum (Pt) foil. Using the Pt/Ti electrodes better results for dye decolourisation were obtained under milder conditions than those used for pure Pt. For the Pt electrode, colour removal of 93 % (lambda = 493 nm) was obtained after 60 min, at 2.2 V vs. RHE, using 0.017 mol L(-1) NaCl + 0.5 mol L(-1) H(2)SO(4) solution. For the Pt/Ti electrode there was better colour removal, 98%, than for the Pt electrode. Moreover, we used 0.017 mol L(-1) NaCl solution and the applied potential was 1.8 V. Under this condition after 15 min of electrolysis, more than 80% of colour was removed. The rate reaction constant, assuming a first order reaction, was 0.024 min(-1) and 0.069 min(-1), for Pt and Pt/Ti electrodes, respectively.

High sensitivity gas sensors are typically realized using metal catalysts and nanostructured materials, utilizing non-conventional synthesis and processing techniques, incompatible with on-chip integration of sensor arrays. In this work, we report a new device architecture, suspended core-shell Pt-PtOx nanostructure that is fully CMOS-compatible. The device consists of a metal gate core, embedded within a partially suspended semiconductor shell with source and drain contacts in the anchored region. The reduced work function in suspended region, coupled with builtin electric field of metal-semiconductor junction, enables the modulation of drain current, due to room temperature Redox reactions on exposure to gas. The device architecture is validated using Pt-PtO2 suspended nanostructure for sensing H-2 down to 200 ppb under room temperature. By exploiting catalytic activity of PtO2, in conjunction with its p-type semiconducting behavior, we demonstrate about two orders of magnitude improvement in sensitivity and limit of detection, compared to the sensors reported in recent literature. Pt thin film, deposited on SiO2, is lithographically patterned and converted into suspended Pt-PtO2 sensor, in a single step isotropic SiO2 etching. An optimum design space for the sensor is elucidated with the initial Pt film thickness ranging between 10 nm and 30 nm, for low power (< 5 mu W), room temperature operation. Au/Pt core shell nanoparticles (NPs) have been prepared via a layer-by-layer growth of Pt layers on An NPs using underpotential deposition (UPD) redox replacement technique. A single UPD Cu monolayer replacement with Pt(11) yielded a uniform Pt film on Au NPs, and the shell thickness can be tuned by controlling the number of UPD redox replacement cycles. Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in air-saturated 0.1 M H2SO4 was used to investigate the electrocatalytic behavior of the as-prepared core shell NPs. Cyclic voltammograms of ORR show that the peak potentials shift positively from 0.32 V to 0.48 V with the number of Pt layers increasing from one to five, suggesting the electrocatalytic activity increases with increasing the thickness of Pt shell. The increase in electrocatalytic activity may originate mostly from the large decrease of electronic influence of Au cores on surface Pt atoms. Rotating ring-disk electrode voltammetry and rotating disk electrode voltammetry demonstrate that ORR is mainly a four-electron reduction on the as-prepared modified electrode with 5 Pt layers and first charge transfer is the rate-determining step.

Noble metal such as Ag normally exists in an fcc crystal structure. However as the size of the material is decreased to nanometer lengthscales, a structural transformation from that of its bulk state can be expected with new atomic arrangements due to competition between internal packing and minimization of surface energy. In many previous studies, it has been shown that silver nanowires (AGNWs) grown inside anodic alumina (AAO) templates by ac or dc electrochemical deposition from silver salts or complexes, adopt fcc structure and below some critical diameter ∼ 20 nm they may acquire hcp structure at low temperature. This is, however, critically dependant on the nature of confinement, as AgNWs grown inside nanotube confinement with subnanometer diameter have been reported to have fcc structure. Hence the question of the crystal structure of metal nanowires under combined influence of confinement, temperature and deposition condition remains open. In this abstract we show that the alternative crystal structures of AGNWs at room temperature can be achieved with electrochemical growth processes under specific conditions determined by the deposition parameters and nature of confinement. We fabricated AgNWs of 4H hexagonal structure with diameters 30 – 80 nm inside polycarbonate (PC) templates with a modified dc electrodeposition technique, where the nanowires were grown at deposition potentials as low as 10 mV in 2 M silver nitrate solution[1]. We call this low-potential electrodeposition (LPED) since the electrodeposition process occurs at potential much less than the standard Nernst potential (770 mV) of silver. Two types of electrodes were used – stainless steel and sputtered thin Pt film, neither of which had any influence on the crystal structure of the nanowires. EDS elemental analysis showed the nanowires to consist only of silver. Although the precise atomic dynamics during the LPED process is unclear at present, we investigated this with HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) characterization of nanowires grown over various deposition times, as well as electrical conductivity measurements. These experiments indicate that nanowire growth does not occur through a three-dimensional diffusion controlled process, as proposed for conventional over-potential deposition, but follow a novel instantaneous linear growth mechanism. Further experiments showed that, (a) conventional electrochemical growth at a small over-potential in a 2 mM AgNO3 solution yields nanowires with expected fcc structure inside the same PC templates, and (2) no nanowire was observed under the LPED conditions inside hard AAO templates, indicating that LPED-growth process, and hcp structure of the corresponding nanowires depend on deposition parameters, as well as nature of confinement.

Atom probe tomography was used to study the redistribution of platinum and arsenic atoms after Ni(Pt) silicidation of As-doped polycrystalline Si. These measurements were performed on a field-effect transistor and compared with those obtained in unpatterned region submitted to the same process. These results suggest that Pt and As redistribution during silicide formation is only marginally influenced by the confinement in microelectronic devices. On the contrary, there is a clear difference with the redistribution reported in the literature for the blanket wafers. Selective etching used to remove the non-reacted Ni(Pt) film after the first rapid heat treatment may induce this difference. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.

Hybrid materials with enhanced properties can now be obtained by combining nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes and metallic nanoparticles, where the main challenge is to control fabrication conditions. In this study, we demonstrate that platinum nanoparticles (PtNps) can be electrogenerated within layer-by-layer (LbL) films of polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), which serve as stabilizing matrices. The advantages of the possible control through electrogeneration were demonstrated with a homogeneous distribution of PtNps over the entire surface of the PAMAM/SWCNT LbL films, whose electroactive sites could be mapped using magnetic force microscopy. The Pt-containing films were used as catalysts for hydrogen peroxide reduction, with a decrease in the reduction potential of 60 mV compared to a Pt film deposited onto bare ITO. By analyzing the mechanisms responsible for hydrogen peroxide reduction, we ascribed the enhanced catalytic activity to synergistic effects between platinum and carbon in the LbL films, which are promising for sensing and fuel cell applications.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is one of the most promising electronic and photonic materials to date. In this work, we present an enhanced ZnO Schottky gas sensor deposited on SiC substrates in comparison to those reported previously in literature. The performance of ZnO/SiC based Schottky thin film gas sensors produced a forward lateral voltage shift of 12.99mV and 111.87mV in response to concentrations of hydrogen gas at 0.06% and 1% in air at optimum temperature of 330 ºC. The maximum change in barrier height was calculated as 37.9 meV for 1% H2 sensing operation at the optimum temperature.

Negative ion element impurities breakdown model in HfO2 thin film was reported in this paper. The content of negative ion elements were detected by glow discharge mass spectrum analysis (GDMS); HfO2 thin films were deposited by the electron-beam evaporation method. The weak absorption and laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) of HfO2 thin films were measured to testify the negative ion element impurity breakdown model. It was found that the LIDT would decrease and the absorption would increase with increasing the content of negative ion element. These results indicated that negative ion elements were harmful impurities and would speed up the damage of thin film. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol on polythionine(PTn) film modified with Pt microparticles has been studied by means of cyclic voltammetry and in-situ FTIR spectroscopy. The Pt microparticles produced by cyclic voltammetry were highly dispersed in and on the PTn film. The modified electrodes exhibit significant electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of methano and the catalytic activity was found in dependence on the Pt loading. The linearly adsorbed CO species is the only intermediate in the oxidation of methanol and the abnormal IR spectra for adsorbed CO were observed. On such modified electrodes, adsorbed CO species derived from methanol can be readily oxidized. The enhanced electrocatalytic activity may be ascribed to the high dispersion of Pt microparticles in and on the PTn film and the synergestic effect between Pt microparticles and the polymer. From the above results, a possible reaction mechanism was proposed.
