Hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings have numerous applications in orthopedics and dentistry, owing to their excellent ability to promote stronger implant fixation and faster bone tissue ingrowth and remodeling. Thermal plasma spray and other plasma-assisted techniques have recently been used to synthesize various calcium phosphate-based bioceramics. Despite notable recent achievements in the desired stoichiometry, phase composition, mechanical, structural, and bio-compatible properties, it is rather difficult to combine all of the above features in a single coating. For example, many existing plasma-sprayed HA coatings fall short in meeting the requirements of grain size and crystallinity, and as such are subject to enhanced resorption in body fluid. On the other hand, relatively poor interfacial bonding and stability is an obstacle to the application of the HA coatings in high load bearing Ti6Al4V knee joint implants. Here, we report on an alternative: a plasma-assisted, concurrent, sputtering deposition technique for high performance biocompatible HA coatings on Ti6Al4V implant alloy. The plasma-assisted RF magnetron co-sputtering deposition method allows one to simultaneously achieve most of the desired attributes of the biomimetic material and overcome the aforementioned problems. This article details the film synthesis process specifications, extensive analytical characterization of the material's properties, mechanical testing, simulated body fluid assessments, biocompatibility and cytocompatibility of the HA-coated Ti6Al4V orthopedic alloy. The means of optimization of the plasma and deposition process parameters to achieve the desired attributes and performance of the HA coating, as well as future challenges in clinical applications are also discussed.

Optical emission of reactive plasma species during the synthesis of functionally graded calcium phosphate-based bioactive films has been investigated. The coatings have been deposited on Ti-6Al-4V orthopedic alloy by co-sputtering of hydroxyapatite (HA) and titanium targets in reactive plasmas of Ar + H2O gas mixtures. The species, responsible for the Ca-P-Ti film growth have been non-intrusively monitored in situ by a high-resolution optical emission spectroscopy (OES). It is revealed that the optical emission originating from CaO species dominates throughout the deposition process. The intensities of CaO, PO and CaPO species are strongly affected by variations of the operating pressure, applied RF power, and DC substrate bias. The optical emission intensity (OEI) of reaction species can efficiently be controlled by addition of H2O reactant.

Highly c-axis oriented ZnO films have been deposited at room temperature with high rates (∼50 nm·min -1) using an innovative remote plasma sputtering configuration, which allows independent control of the plasma density and the sputtering ion energy. The ZnO films deposited possess excellent crystallographic orientation, high resistivity (>10 9 Ω·m), and exhibit very low surface roughness. The ability to increase the sputtering ion energy without causing unwanted Ar + bombardment onto the substrate has been shown to be crucial for the growth of films with excellent c-axis orientation without the need of substrate heating. In addition, the elimination of the Ar + bombardment has facilitated the growth of films with very low defect density and hence very low intrinsic stress (100 MPa for 3 μm-thick films). This is over an order of magnitude lower than films grown with a standard magnetron sputtering system. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.

Hafnium oxide (HfOx) is a high dielectric constant (k) oxide which has been identified as being suitable for use as the gate dielectric in thin film transistors (TFTs). Amorphous materials are preferred for a gate dielectric, but it has been an ongoing challenge to produce amorphous HfOx while maintaining a high dielectric constant. A technique called high target utilization sputtering (HiTUS) is demonstrated to be capable of depositing high-k amorphous HfOx thin films at room temperature. The plasma is generated in a remote chamber, allowing higher rate deposition of films with minimal ion damage. Compared to a conventional sputtering system, the HiTUS technique allows finer control of the thin film microstructure. Using a conventional reactive rf magnetron sputtering technique, monoclinic nanocrystalline HfOx thin films have been deposited at a rate of ∼1.6nmmin-1 at room temperature, with a resistivity of 1013Ωcm, a breakdown strength of 3.5MVcm-1 and a dielectric constant of ∼18.2. By comparison, using the HiTUS process, amorphous HfOx (x=2.1) thin films which appear to have a cubic-like short-range order have been deposited at a high deposition rate of ∼25nmmin-1 with a high resistivity of 1014Ωcm, a breakdown strength of 3MVcm-1 and a high dielectric constant of ∼30. Two key conditions must be satisfied in the HiTUS system for high-k HfOx to be produced. Firstly, the correct oxygen flow rate is required for a given sputtering rate from the metallic target. Secondly, there must be an absence of energetic oxygen ion bombardment to maintain an amorphous microstructure and a high flux of medium energy species emitted from the metallic sputtering target to induce a cubic-like short range order. This HfOx is very attractive as a dielectric material for large-area electronic applications on flexible substrates. A remote plasma sputtering process (high target utilization sputtering, HiTUS) has been used to deposit amorphous hafnium oxide with a very high dielectric constant (∼30). X-ray diffraction shows that this material has a microstructure in which the atoms have a cubic-like short-range order, whereas radio frequency (rf) magnetron sputtering produced a monoclinic polycrystalline microstructure. This is correlated to the difference in the energetics of remote plasma and rf magnetron sputtering processes. © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

ZnxSnyOz thin films (<100nm thickness), deposited by remote sputtering from a metal target using a confined argon plasma and oxygen gas jet near the sample, were investigated for their material properties. No visible deformation or curl was observed when deposited on plastic. Materials were confirmed to be amorphous and range between 5 and 10 at.% Sn concentration by x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and energydispersive x-ray spectroscopy. Factors affecting the material composition over time are discussed. Depletion of the Sn as the target ages is suspected. © The Electrochemical Society.

We report a radio frequency magnetron sputtering method for producing TiO2 shell coatings directly on the surface of ZnO nanorod arrays. ZnO nanorod arrays were firstly fabricated on transparent conducting oxide substrates by a hydrothermal route, and subsequently decorated with TiO2 by a plasma sputtering deposition process. The core/shell nanorods have single-crystal ZnO cores and anatase TiO2 shells. The shells are homogeneously coated onto the whole ZnO nanorods without thickness change. This approach enables us to tailor the thickness of the TiO2 shell for desired photovoltaic applications on a one-nanometer scale. The function of the TiO2 shell as a blocking layer for increasing charge separation and suppression of the surface recombination was tested in dye-sensitized solar cells. The enhanced photocurrent and open-circuit voltage gave rise to increased photovoltaic efficiency and decreased dark current, indicating successful functioning of the TiO2 shell.

Aluminum acetylacetonate has been reported as a precursor for the deposition of alumina films using different approaches. In this work, alumina-containing films were prepared by plasma sputtering this compound, spread directly on the powered lowermost electrode of a reactor, while grounding the substrates mounted on the topmost electrode. Radiofrequency power (13.56 MHz) was used to excite the plasma from argon atmosphere at a working pressure of 11 Pa. The effect of the plasma excitation power on the properties of the resulting films was studied. Film thickness and hardness were measured by profilometry and nanoindentation, respectively. The molecular structure and chemical composition of the layers were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Surface micrographs, obtained by scanning electron microscopy, allowed the determination of the sample morphology. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction was employed to determine the structure of the films. Amorphous organic layers were deposited with thicknesses of up to 7 μm and hardness of around 1.0 GPa. The films were composed by aluminum, carbon, oxygen and hydrogen, their proportions being strongly dependent on the power used to excite the plasma. A uniform surface was obtained for low-power depositions, but particulates and cracks appeared in the high-power prepared materials. The presence of different proportions of aluminum oxide in the coatings is ascribed to the different activations promoted in the metalorganic molecule once in the plasma phase. Nitrogenated carbon nanotips (NCNTPs) are synthesized by plasma-enhanced hot filament chemical vapor deposition from the hydrogen, methane, and nitrogen gas mixtures with different flow rate ratios of hydrogen to nitrogen. The morphological, structural, compositional, and electron field emission (EFE) properties of the NCNTPs were investigated by field emissionscanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, x ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and EFE high-vacuum system. It is shown that the NCNTPs deposited at an intermediate flow rate ratio of hydrogen to nitrogen feature the best size/shape and pattern uniformity, the highest nanotip density, the highest nitrogen concentration, as well as the best electron field emission performance. Several factors that come into play along with the nitrogen incorporation, such as the combined effect of the plasma sputtering and etching, the transition of sp 3carbon clusters to sp 2carbon clusters, the increase of the size of the sp 2 clusters, as well as the reduction of the work function, have been examined to interpret these experimental findings. Our results are highly relevant to the development of the next generation electron field emitters, flat panel displays, atomic force microscope probes, and several other advanced applications.

Since 1998, many experiments for metallic ion production have been done on LECR2 (Lanzhou ECR ion source NO.2), LECR3 (Lanzhou ECR ion source NO.3) and SECRAL (Superconductiong ECR ion source Advanced design in Lanzhou) at Institute of Modern Physics. The very heavy metallic ion beams such as those of uranium were also produced by the plasma sputtering method, and supplied for HIRFL (Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou) accelerators successfully. During the test, 11.5e mu AU(28+), 9e mu AU(24+) were obtained. Some ion beams of the metal having lower melting temperature such as Ni and Mg ion beams were produced by oven method on LECR3 too. The consumption rate was controlled to be lower for Mg-26 ion beams production, and the minimum consumption was about 0.3mg per hour. In this paper, the main experimental results are given. Some discussions are made for some experimental phenomena and results, and some conclusions are drawn.

An innovative custom-designed inductively coupled plasma-assisted RF magnetron sputtering deposition system has been developed to synthesize B-doped microcrystalline silicon thin films using a pure boron sputtering target in a reactive silane and argon gas mixture. Films were deposited using different boron target powers ranging from 0 to 350 W at a substrate temperature of 250 °C. The effect of the boron target power on the structural and electrical properties of the synthesized films was extensively investigated using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Hall-effect system. It is shown that, with an initial increase of the boron target power from 0 to 300 W, the structural and electrical properties of the B-doped microcrystalline films are improved. However, when the target power is increased too much (e.g. to 350 W), these properties become slightly worse. The variation of the structural and electrical properties of the synthesized B-doped microcrystalline thin films is related to the incorporation of boron atoms during the crystallization and doping of silicon in the inductively coupled plasma-based process. This work is particularly relevant to the microcrystalline silicon-based p-i-n junction solar cells.

In this system, the plasma production and magnetron sputtering can be controlled independently during the discharge. The deposited SiC nanoislanded films are highly uniform, have excellent stoichiometry, have a typical size of 10-45 nm, and contain small (∼ 6 nm) cubic SiC nanocrystallites embedded in an amorphous SiC matrix.

Plasma-assisted reactive rf magnetron sputtering deposition is used to fabricate vanadium oxide films on glass, silica and silicon substrates. The process conditions are optimized to synthesize phase-pure vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) featuring a nanocrystalline structure with the predominant (0 0 1) crystallographic orientation, surface morphology with rod-like nanosized grains and very uniform (the non-uniformity does not exceed 4%) coating thickness over large surface areas. The V2O5 films also show excellent and temperature-independent optical transmittance in a broad temperature range (20-95 °C). The results are relevant to the development of smart functional coatings with temperature-tunable properties. © 2007 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The plasma-assisted RF sputtering deposition of a biocompatible, functionally graded calcium phosphate bioceramic on a Ti6A14 V orthopedic alloy is reported. The chemical composition and presence of hydroxyapatite (HA), CaTiO3, and CaO mineral phases can be effectively controlled by the process parameters. At higher DC biases, the ratio [Ca]/[P] and the amount of CaO increase, whereas the HA content decreases. Optical emission spectroscopy suggests that CaO+ is the dominant species that responds to negative DC bias and controls calcium content. Biocompatibility tests in simulated body fluid confirm a positive biomimetic response evidenced by in-growth of an apatite layer after 24 h of immersion.
