In this article, dispersed flow of viscous oil and water is investigated. The experimental work was performed in a 26.2-mm-i.d. 12-m-long horizontal glass pipe using water and oil (viscosity of 100 mPa s and density of 860 kg/m(3)) as test fluids. High-speed video recording and a new wire-mesh sensor based on capacitance (permittivity) measurements were used to characterize the flow. Furthermore, holdup data were obtained using quick-closing-valves technique (QCV). An interesting finding was the oil-water slip ratio greater than one for dispersed flow at high Reynolds number. Chordal phase fraction distribution diagrams and images of the holdup distribution over the pipe cross-section obtained via wire-mesh sensor indicated a significant amount of water near to the pipe wall for the three different dispersed flow patterns identified in this study: oil-in-water homogeneous dispersion (o/w H), oil-in-water non-homogeneous dispersion (o/w NH) and Dual continuous (Do/w & Dw/o). The phase slip might be explained by the existence of a water film surrounding the homogeneous mixture of oil-in-water in a hidrofilic-oilfobic pipe. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

An experimental study on drag-reduction phenomenon in dispersed oil-water flow has been performed in a 26-mm-i.d. Twelve meter long horizontal glass pipe. The flow was characterized using a novel wire-mesh sensor based on capacitance measurements and high-speed video recording. New two-phase pressure gradient, volume fraction, and phase distribution data have been used in the analysis. Drag reduction and slip ratio were detected at oil volume fractions between 10 and 45% and high mixture Reynolds numbers, and with water as the dominant phase. Phase-fraction distribution diagrams and cross-sectional imaging of the flow suggested the presence of a higher amount of water near to the pipe wall. Based on that, a phenomenology for explaining drag reduction in dispersed flow in a flow situation where slip ratio is significant is proposed. A simple phenomenological model is developed and the agreement between model predictions and data, including data from the literature, is encouraging. A hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian approach is employed to simulate heavy particle dispersion in turbulent pipe flow. The mean flow is provided by the Eulerian simulations developed by mean of JetCode, whereas the fluid fluctuations seen by particles are prescribed by a stochastic differential equation based on normalized Langevin. The statistics of particle velocity are compared to LES data which contain detailed statistics of velocity for particles with diameter equal to 20.4 µm. The model is in good agreement with the LES data for axial mean velocity whereas rms of axial and radial velocities should be adjusted.

In this work, we use large eddy simulations (LES) and Lagrangian tracking to study the influence of gravity on particle statistics in a fully developed turbulent upward/downward flow in a vertical channel and pipe at matched Kàrmàn number. Only drag and gravity are considered in the equation of motion for solid particles, which are assumed to have no influence on the flow field. Particle interactions with the wall are fully elastic. Our findings obtained from the particle statistics confirm that: (i) the gravity seems to modify both the quantitative and qualitative behavior of the particle distribution and statistics of the particle velocity in wall normal direction; (ii) however, only the quantitative behavior of velocity particle in streamwise direction and the root mean square of velocity components is modified; (iii) the statistics of fluid and particles coincide very well near the wall in channel and pipe flow with equal Kàrmàn number; (iv) pipe curvature seems to have quantitative and qualitative influence on the particle velocity and on the particle concentration in wall normal direction.

The thesis deals with the experimental investigation of turbulent pipe flow at high Reynolds number. Wall-bounded turbulence is an extremely relevant topic for engineering and natural science applications and yet many aspects of the physics are not clear due to the difficulty in performing high Re experiments. To overcome these difficulties the CICLoPE Laboratory was developed, the main element of which is the Long Pipe wind tunnel. The facility is unique in its kind, as thanks to its large scale it delivers a flow quality and resolution that can not be achieved elsewhere at these Reynolds number. Reported here are the results from the first experimental campaign performed in the facility. A first part of the results presented concerns the characterization of this new facility. Flow quality and stability are assessed, particular attention is given to the characterization of pressure drop. The scaling of velocity fluctuations is analysed. The magnitude of the inner peak of the streamwise normal stress shows an increasing trend up to the highest Reynolds number examined, while no outer peak was clearly distinguishable from present measurements. Scaling of coherent motions is investigated via spectral analysis. An inner and outer spectral peaks are identified, with the former scaling in inner units while the latter neither following inner nor outer scaling, and increasing in magnitude with Re. Analysis of the spectra at y+ ≈ 15 shows how the increase of Reynolds normal stress is related to the influence of large scales in the inner wall region. Quadrant analysis was carried out on streamwise and wall-normal velocity fluctuations. The results show the important role in contribution to Reynolds shear stress of highly intermittent and strong events like ejections, that assume an even more intermittent and dominant role with the increase of Reynolds number.

Passive scalars measurements in turbulent pipe flows are difficult to perform and only few experimental data are available in literature. The present thesis deals with the experimental acquisition and study of the first turbulent temperature profile inside the CICLoPE wind tunnel through cold wire anemometry technique at Reτ = 6000 and Reτ = 9500. This type of measurements provides not only useful data on temperature (and passive scalars) behaviour and statistics in turbulent pipe flows, but could be used also for temperature correction of turbulent velocity profiles. In the present work, subsequent acquisitions of temperature and velocity profiles has been performed at the same Reynolds number and in the same points, through cold wire and hot wire techniques respectively. Taking as reference data from both DNS and experimental campaigns, the activity has been carried out obtaining satisfactory results. We have verified the presence of turbulent temperature profile inside the CICLoPE wind tunnel and then studied its statistical and spectral behaviours obtaining results in agreement with existing data from Hishida, Nagano, and Ferro. Cold wire temperature data were then used to correct hot wire velocity data, obtaining a slightly improvement in the near wall region.

Improving heat transfer is a critical area of research in various fields such as thermal engineering, energy conversion and aeronautical engineering. The aim of this thesis is to present the design, construction and testing of an experimental setup for the study of heat transfer enhancement in a turbulent boundary layer using cross-flow pulsed jets. The set-up is designed to generate and control pulsed jets, measure heat transfer and acquire all parameters related to wind tunnel flow and is also capable of varying the parameters of the pulsed jets, such as frequency, amplitude and the duty cycle, in order to study the effects on the increase in heat transfer. The thesis describes the design phases, the construction process and the final successful testing of the plant. The test results verify the functionality and accuracy of the set-up and ensure that it can be used to perform a full experimental campaign to investigate heat transfer enhancement using cross-flow pulsed jets in a turbulent layer boundary.

The pipe flow of a viscous-oil-gas-water mixture such as that involved in heavy oil production is a rather complex thereto-fluid dynamical problem. Considering the complexity of three-phase flow, it is of fundamental importance the introduction of a flow pattern classification tool to obtain useful information about the flow structure. Flow patterns are important because they indicate the degree of mixing during flow and the spatial distribution of phases. In particular, the pressure drop and temperature evolution along the pipe is highly dependent on the spatial configuration of the phases. In this work we investigate the three-phase water-assisted flow patterns, i.e. those configurations where water is injected in order to reduce friction caused by the viscous oil. Phase flow rates and pressure drop data from previous laboratory experiments in a horizontal pipe are used for flow pattern identification by means of the 'support vector machine' technique (SVM).

Interactions between turbulent waters and atmosphere may lead to strong air-water mixing. This experimental study is focused on the flow down a staircase channel characterised by very strong flow aeration and turbulence. Interfacial aeration is characterised by strong air-water mixing extending down to the invert. The size of entrained bubbles and droplets extends over several orders of magnitude, and a significant number of bubble/droplet clusters was observed. Velocity and turbulence intensity measurements suggest high levels of turbulence across the entire air-water flow. The increase in turbulence levels, compared to single-phase flow situations, is proportional to the number of entrained particles. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper presents an experimental research about the behavior of two-phase flows in inclined pipes. The inclination angle varied from 5° to 45° and the slurry solid concentration varied up to 15%. It was concluded that the head losses of the downward sloping pipe flow are always lower than the head losses of the horizontal flow and these are always lower than the head losses of the upward sloping pipe flow, regardless the concentration and inclination angle. It was possible to develop empirical equations to calculate the head losses of the horizontal flow and the upward and downward sloping pipe flows.

Laminar axial flow of a pseudoplastic fluid food (soursop, juice) in annular ducts has been experimentally investigated. In the first part of the manuscript, the rheological behavior of soursop juice, being essential for the annular flow analysis, was completely determined from 9.3 to 49.4 degrees Brix and temperatures from 0.4 degrees C to 68.8 degrees C, using a rotational rheometer equipped with coaxial cylinders. In order to test the adequacy of the rheology results, pressure loss data in the laminar pipe flow were collected and then experimental and theoretical friction factors were compared, showing excellent agreement, which indicated the reliability of the Power-Law model for describing the soursop juices. In the second part, pressure loss in annular regions was measured and used to estimate friction factors, which were then compared to those resulted from analytical and semi-analytical equations. The principal contributions of this article are to provide a review on the determination of friction factors-Reynolds number of pseudoplastic fluids in annuli, and also supply extensive new experimental data on the rheological properties and pressure loss of an important shear-thinning fluid food, which is of particular interest for the food engineering process design. On-line leak detection is a main concern for the safe operation of pipelines. Acoustic and mass balance are the most important and extensively applied technologies in field problems. The objective of this work is to compare these leak detection methods with respect to a given reference situation, i.e., the same pipeline and monitoring signals acquired at the inlet and outlet ends. Experimental tests were conducted in a 749 m long laboratory pipeline transporting water as the working fluid. The instrumentation included pressure transducers and electromagnetic flowmeters. Leaks were simulated by opening solenoid valves placed at known positions and previously calibrated to produce known average leak flow rates. Results have clearly shown the limitations and advantages of each method. It is also quite clear that acoustics and mass balance technologies are, in fact, complementary. In general, an acoustic leak detection system sends out an alarm more rapidly and locates the leak more precisely, provided that the rupture of the pipeline occurs abruptly enough. On the other hand, a mass balance leak detection method is capable of quantifying the leak flow rate very accurately and of detecting progressive leaks.

Lämmönsiirron tehostamiseksi putkeen on asennettu turbulaattorilanka. Työssä on selvitetty edellytyksiä mallintaa hydraulisesti sileässä putkessa tapahtuvaa virtausta. Reynoldsin luvun ollessa alle 2300 mallinnuksessa on käytetty laminaarimallia. Reynoldsin luvuilla 2300-30000, turbulenttisella alueella, on käytetty pienten Reynoldsin luvun k-ɛ-mallia. Lämmönsiirron tehostamiseksi putkeen on asennettu turbulaattorilanka. Tässä työssä on numeerisin menetelmin (pienten Reynoldsin luvun k-ɛ-malli ja k-ɛ-malli) suoritettu laskentaa yhdellä turbulaattorilankarakenteella. Laskennan vertailuaineistona on käytetty aikaisemmasta kokeellisesta tutkimuksesta saatua mittausdataa. Kokeellisessa tutkimuksessa turbulaattorirakenteena on käytetty putken seinämällä kiertyvää turbulaattorilankaa. Todellinen kolmiulotteinen geometria osoittautui vaikeaksi mallintaa.
