This study investigated the immunotherapeutic potential of the protein aggregate magnesium-ammonium phospholinoleate-palmitoleate anhydride immuno-modulator (P-MAPA) on canine visceral leishmaniasis. Twenty mongrel dogs presenting clinical symptoms compatible with leishmaniasis and diagnosis confirmed by the detection of anti-leishmania antibodies were studied. Ten dogs received 15 doses of the immunomodulator (2.0mg/kg) intramuscularly, and 10 received saline as a placebo. Skin and peripheral blood samples were collected following administration of the immunomodulator. The groups were followed to observe for clinical signals of remission; parasite load in the skin biopsies using real-time PCR, the cytokines IL-2, IL-10 and IFN-γ in the supernatant of peripheral blood mononuclear cells stimulated in vitro with either total promastigote antigen or phytohemagglutinin measured by capture ELISA, and changes in CD4+ and CD8+ T cell subpopulations evaluated by flow cytometry. Comparison between the groups showed that treatment with the immunomodulator promoted improvement in clinical signs and a significant reduction in parasite load in the skin. In peripheral blood mononuclear cell cultures, supernatants showed a decrease in IL-10 levels and an increase in IL-2 and IFN-γ. An increase in CD8+ T cells was observed in peripheral blood. In addition, the in vitro leishmanicidal action of P-MAPA was investigated using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and no leishmanicidal activity was detected. These findings suggest that P-MAPA has potential as an immunotherapeutic drug in canine visceral leishmaniasis, since it assists in reestablishing partial immunocompetence of infected dogs. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

ABSTRACT: The environmental Noise Directive 2002/49/EC has clear requirements to Member States in terms of Strategic Noise Maps according to roads. So, have been carried out in Spain, in 2007, Strategic Noise Maps of the major roads which have more than six million vehicle passages a year (2006 data) where the A-3 road near “Campus Sur U.P.M.” is included. In accord with the statement of technical requirements, these Strategic Noise Maps are divided into A phase (Basic study) and B phase (detailed study). The present project by the name of "Implementation of Strategic Noise Map of Spanish Roads (A-3 – Campus Sur U.P.M. area)" shows the results of Strategic Noise Map for the A-3 in the Community of Madrid (A phase, public information – EGRA project Spanish Ministry of Transport). According to de study results and the not election of “Campus Sur” to B phase (detail), in this project has been made the B phase of Strategic Map in compliance with Directive 2002/49/EC, following the technical requirements specifications for the first phase of deliveries (2007) and using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to carry on them. Is justified, in accordance with the results, if it was necessary to include “Campus Sur” in this B phase of study. Once established the differences between Strategic Noise Map and Noise Map, the present project examines the technical criteria that must take an acoustic consultant for the realization of a Strategic Map and how these criteria could affect the quality of the final results being all of them valid but it generate a lack of homogeneity between the different Strategic Noise Map by the author of the study. There wasn’t so much experience in Spain in the methodology proposed by the European Noise Directive. The actions that are being taken after delivery of 2007 to try to solve this problem and get harmonized the results among the whole network for the new deliveries each five years are shown at the present project.

The acceptability of nine commercial brazilian varietal white table wines (Riesling, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer) was evaluated using sensory affective tests. The samples were assessed by 43 consumers of brazilian white wines using he nine-point structured hedonic scale. Judges were recruited based on their responses to a questionnary about consumer?s behavior towards white wines consumption. Subsequently, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with means comparision (Tukey test) and Internal Analysis of Preference Mapping (MDPREF) were performed on data. Analysis of Variance showed that two samples (a Riesling and a Gewürztraminer, both sweet table wines) had significantly (p < 0.05) higher acceptance means, around 7 in the hedonic scale. The least acceptance means (4,3) was obtained by a demi-sec Chardonnay wine and the other six samples achieved means around 5 in the hedonic scale, all of them either demi-sec or dry table wines. MDPREF confirmed the results showed by ANOVA showing that samples were segmented into two groups of preference. The first group was composed by 86% of consumers who prefered the sweet table wines (higher acceptance), converging to the region on the map where these samples were represented. Only 14% showed preference for the demi-sec and dry table wines, being represented on the region of the MDPREF where these samples were located. This study suggests that sweet table wines are prefered by Brazilian consumers, instead of dry or demi-sec table wines.

In this paper we highlight the existence of a new line of research within the Ethnomathematics Program. In its origin, research in this area has sought to contribute to understanding regarding the diversity of mathematical thought through a careful look at work activities. In recent years, however, we have paid increasing attention to the affirmations of anthropologists that myths can be used to understand the most basic questions of human thought as well as specific questions regarding the society that produced them. Based on this idea, the myths of different peoples are perceived as informative with respect to their Ethnomathematics. Thus, together with work activities, myths constitute a source of support on which we draw to develop this line of research.
