Biodiesel is an important new alternative fuel. The feedstock used and the process employed determines whether it fulfills the required specifications. In this work, an identification method is proposed using an electronic nose (e-nose). Four samples of biodiesel from different sources and one of petrodiesel were analyzed and well-recognized by the e-nose. Both pure biodiesel and B20 blends were studied. Furthermore, an innovative semiquantitative method is proposed on the basis of the smellprints correlated by a feed-forward artificial neural network. The results have demonstrated that the e-nose can be used to identify the biodiesel source and as a preliminary quantitative assay in place of expensive equipment.

Objectives: The relationship between saddle nose deformity (SND) in Wegener`s granulomatosis (WG) and other clinical features, including retro-orbital mass formation (ROM), has been poor described. Therefore, this relationship was analyzed retrospectively from 2000 to 2010. Patients and Methods: Eighteen consecutive WG patients with SND diagnosed by computed tomography were matched to 36 WG patients without SND (control group) for gender, age at WG diagnosis and disease duration. Results: No difference was found between the two groups in relation to WG type (limited and systemic forms), ethnicity, laboratory features, constitutional symptoms or clinical manifestations, including upper respiratory tract, and treatment, except for ROM (33.3 vs. 2.8% in SND(+) and SND(-) groups, respectively; p=0.004) and subglottic stenosis (22.2 vs. 2.8%; p=0.038). However, on multivariate analysis, only ROM (OR 17.15; 95% CI 1.11-265.52) was statistically associated to SND. In addition, in more than half of the cases, SND manifested prior to ROM. Conclusions: Results of this prospective analysis showed that SND was strongly associated to ROM in WG. Since early diagnosis and aggressive treatment of orbital involvement could lead to better prognosis, the presence of SND warrants additional vigilance.

Background: Since 1957, when the concept of rotation-advancement repair was introduced by Millard, this technique has become the procedure of choice for unilateral cleft lip worldwide. More recently, modifications described by Noordhoof, Mohler, Skoog, and McComb started being jointly performed so that better results could be obtained. In this study, the nasal position was evaluated and related to the size of the cleft. The primary unilateral cleft lip repair was performed through a modified technique. Methods: Forty-five patients with unilateral cleft lip underwent primary surgical repair through this technique. To analyze aesthetic results, a severity classification of deformities and a scoring system for evaluation of the results were established based on nasal alar lateralization, dome position, alignment of bone segments, and deviation of the columella. Results: By means of the established system, 26.6% of mild forms, 13.4% of moderate forms, and 60% of severe forms were observed. Among aesthetic results, 17.8% were found to be good, and 82.2% were considered excellent. Among aspects considered negative, late deformity of the lower lateral cartilage prevailed. Conclusions: Through the presented evaluation, the authors observed that there was no relation between severity of the cleft and final position of the nose. Among the 27 patients considered to have had severe forms of cleft deformity, 22 were classified as excellent results (81.5%). To obtain better results along time, technical refinements and the critical analysis of results must be performed on a routinely basis.

Absence of half-nose is an extremely rare congenital malformation, which has a devastating impact on the patient and the family. A review of indexed English-language literature found 91 cases of half-nose, including 50 patients with proboscis lateralis. Pathogenesis is not clear, and the reported cases have sporadically occurred. Many aspects must be considered when reconstructing a congenital half-nose, such as timing of surgery, type of tissue to be used and the need to reconstruct nasal airway. The aim of this article is to present personal experience in seven cases of half-nose reconstruction, in order to review the literature regarding to this rare entity, highlighting aspects of incidence, pathogenesis and surgical treatment. Nasal reconstruction was performed at ages of 5-7 years to minimise psychological trauma. Forehead skin demonstrated to be an excellent donor site to re-surface the nose. For the inner lining, contralateral cutaneous nasal flap was our preference. Concerning the nasal framework reconstruction, alar contour was restored using a cartilage graft from the lower portion of ear tragus and concha. Echinobothrium chisholmae n. sp. is described from Rhinobatos typus Bennett (Rhinobatidae), collected from Heron Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia. E. chisholmae differs from all congeners in possessing 11 hooks in each dorsal and ventral group on the rostellum and groups of 3-6 hooklets on either side of the hooks. A single metacestode of E. chisholmae was collected from the decapod crustacean Penaeus longistylus Kubo. Yellow pigmentation of the cephalic peduncle in immature adults is caused by the accumulation of large vesicles in the distal cytoplasm of the tegument. The vesicles probably provide materials for spine formation. Ultrastructural examination of the rostellar musculature revealed that the muscles are stratified (striated-like), consisting of a periodic repetition of sarcomeres separated by perforated Z-like lines that are oblique to the long axes of the myofilaments.

Dermatitis artefacta is a disease characterized by self-inflicted skin lesions as the result or manifestation of psychiatric disorders or specific stress situations. Clinical manifestations range from superficial erosions to deep wounds. Because of its rarity and the polymorphism of the lesions, dermatitis artefacta is often a challenge for the clinicians. This report presents the case of a 62-year-old woman who had an ulcer of the nose lasting for three years caused by digital manipulation. Early recognition of dermatitis artefacta is difficult but avoids unnecessary treatments. A multidisciplinary approach to this entity is necessary to obtain the best results.

We report clinical, anthropometric and radiological findings in 4 siblings with a new type of skeletal dysplasia. 4 normally intelligent girls exhibit dwarfism between -3.4 and -4.6 standard deviations with accentuated shortening of the lower limbs, moderate deformity of the vertebral bodies, mildly striated metaphyses, saddle nose, frontal bossing, and relatively large head. The family pedigree suggests autosomal recessive inheritance. We propose the designation of SPONASTRIME dysplasia, derived from spondylar and nasal alterations with striation of the metaphyses.

Reconstructive procedures after resection of nasal basal cell carcinoma (BCC) vary depending on the subunit involved. The aim of the present study was to assess the influence of the location of the BCC on the rate of incomplete excisions, so we made a retrospective analysis of all nasal BCC excised at our hospital between 2002 and 2005. The incomplete excision rate was 24/148 (16%). More incomplete excision occurred on the alae (n=13) when compared to the dorsum (n=2) of the nose (p<0.05). Eight two-staged procedures resulted in incomplete resection, whereas 9 (6%) frozen section analyses were false-negative. BCC were most likely to be incompletely excised on the nasal tip and alae, and both subunits required more elaborate reconstructions. This, however, was not the result of poor estimation of the extent of the tumour and reluctance to excise more challenging areas widely for reconstruction, but to the method chosen to eradicate the tumour.

Malnutrition affects 40-50% of patients with ear, nose and throat (ENT) cancer. The aim of this study was to assess changes induced by a specific nutritional supplement enriched with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, fiber and greater amounts of proteins and electrolytes, as compared with a standard nutritional supplement, on markers of inflammation, oxidative stress and metabolic status of ENT cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy (RT). Fourteen days after starting RT, 26 patients were randomly allocated to one of two groups, 13 supplemented with Prosure, an oncologic formula enriched with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, fiber and greater amounts of proteins and electrolytes (specific supplement), and 13 supplemented with Standard-Isosource (standard supplement). Patients were evaluated before RT, and 14, 28 and 90 days after starting RT. The results showed that there were no significant differences between the groups, but greater changes were observed in the standard supplement group, such as a decline in body mass index (BMI), reductions in hematocrit, erythrocyte, eosinophil and albumin levels, and a rise in creatinine and urea levels. We concluded that metabolic, inflammatory and oxidative stress parameters were altered during RT, and began to normalize at the end of the study. Patients supplemented with Prosure showed an earlier normalization of these parameters, with more favorable changes in oxidative stress markers and a more balanced evolution, although the difference was not significant.

Abstract A prospective 1-year follow-up study in ear, nose, and throat (ENT) cancer patients was carried out one year after radiotherapy to assess the effect of varying consumption of ω3 fatty acid according to whether they consumed more or less than the 50th percentile of ω3 fatty acids. Clinical, analytical, inflammatory (CRP and IL-6), and oxidative variables (TAC, GPx, GST, and SOD) were evaluated. The study comprised 31 patients (87.1% men), with a mean age of 61.3 ± 9.1 years. Hematological variables showed significant differences in the patients with a lower consumption of ω3 fatty acids. A lower mortality and longer survival were found in the group with ω3 fatty acid consumption ≥50th percentile but the differences were not significant. No significant difference was reached in toxicity, inflammation, and oxidative stress markers. The group with ω3 fatty acid consumption <50th percentile significantly experienced more hematological and immune changes.

The performance of the Xpert MRSA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay on pooled nose, groin, and throat swabs (three nylon flocked eSwabs into one tube) was compared to culture by analyzing 5,546 samples. The sensitivity [0.78, 95 % confidence interval (CI) 0.73-0.82] and specificity (0.99, 95 % CI 0.98-0.99) were similar to the results from published studies on separated nose or other specimens. Thus, the performance of the Xpert MRSA assay was not affected by pooling the three specimens into one assay, allowing a higher detection rate without increasing laboratory costs, as compared to nose samples alone.

The nose-horned viper (Vipera ammodytes) occurs in a large part of the south-eastern Europe and Asia Minor. Phylogenetic relationships were reconstructed for a total of 59 specimens using sequences from three mitochondrial regions (16S and cytochrome b genes, and control region, totalling 2308 bp). A considerable number of clades were observed within this species, showing a large genetic diversity within the Balkan peninsula. Splitting of the basal clades was evaluated to about 4 million years ago. Genetic results are in contradiction with presently accepted taxonomy based on morphological characters: V. a. gregorwallneri and V. a. ruffoi do not display any genetic difference compared with the nominotypic subspecies (V. a. ammodytes), involving that these subspecies can be regarded as synonyms. High genetic divergence in the central part of the Balkan peninsula is not concordant with low morphological differentiation. Finally, the extensive genetic diversity within the Balkan peninsula and the colonisation routes are discussed
