In order to study the connections between Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms constructed from aperhaps singularhigher-order Lagrangian, some geometric structures are constructed. Intermediate spaces between those of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms, partial Ostrogradskiis transformations and unambiguous evolution operators connecting these spaces are intrinsically defined, and some of their properties studied. Equations of motion, constraints, and arbitrary functions of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms are thoroughly studied. In particular, all the Lagrangian constraints are obtained from the Hamiltonian ones. Once the gauge transformations are taken into account, the true number of degrees of freedom is obtained, both in the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms, and also in all the intermediate formalisms herein defined.

In this work we show that, if L is a natural Lagrangian system such that the k-jet of the potential energy ensures it does not have a minimum at the equilibrium and such that its Hessian has rank at least n - 2, then there is an asymptotic trajectory to the associated equilibrium point and so the equilibrium is unstable. This applies, in particular, to analytic potentials with a saddle point and a Hessian with at most 2 null eigenvalues. The result is proven for Lagrangians in a specific form, and we show that the class of Lagrangians we are interested can be taken into this specific form by a subtle change of spatial coordinates. We also consider the extension of this results to systems subjected to gyroscopic forces. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A presymplectic structure for path-dependent Lagrangian systems is set up such that, when applied to ordinary Lagrangians, it yields the familiar Legendre transformation. It is then applied to derive a Hamiltonian formalism and the conserved quantities for those predictive invariant systems whose solutions also satisfy a Fokker-type action principle.

A Hamiltonian formalism is set up for nonlocal Lagrangian systems. The method is based on obtaining an equivalent singular first order Lagrangian, which is processed according to the standard Legendre transformation and then, the resulting Hamiltonian formalism is pulled back onto the phase space defined by the corresponding constraints. Finally, the standard results for local Lagrangians of any order are obtained as a particular case.

The equivalence between the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism is studied for constraint systems. A procedure to construct the Lagrangian constraints from the Hamiltonian constraints is given. Those Hamiltonian constraints that are first class with respect to the Hamiltonian constraints produce Lagrangian constraints that are FL-projectable.

This article presents a new approach to minimize the losses in electrical power systems. This approach considers the application of the primal-dual logarithmic barrier method to voltage magnitude and tap-changing transformer variables, and the other inequality constraints are treated by augmented Lagrangian method. The Lagrangian function aggregates all the constraints. The first-order necessary conditions are reached by Newton's method, and by updating the dual variables and penalty factors. Test results are presented to show the good performance of this approach.

Lagrangian descriptors are a recent technique which reveals geometrical structures in phase space and which are valid for aperiodically time dependent dynamical systems. We discuss a general methodology for constructing them and we discuss a "heuristic argument" that explains why this method is successful. We support this argument by explicit calculations on a benchmark problem. Several other benchmark examples are considered that allow us to assess the performance of Lagrangian descriptors with both finite time Lyapunov exponents (FTLEs) and finite time averages of certain components of the vector field ("time averages"). In all cases Lagrangian descriptors are shown to be both more accurate and computationally efficient than these methods.

In this article, a new methodology is presented to obtain representation models for a priori relation z = u(x1, x2, . . . ,xn) (1), with a known an experimental dataset zi; x1i ; x2i ; x3i ; . . . ; xni i=1;2;...;p· In this methodology, a potential energy is initially defined over each possible model for the relationship (1), what allows the application of the Lagrangian mechanics to the derived system. The solution of the Euler–Lagrange in this system allows obtaining the optimal solution according to the minimal action principle. The defined Lagrangian, corresponds to a continuous medium, where a n-dimensional finite elements model has been applied, so it is possible to get a solution for the problem solving a compatible and determined linear symmetric equation system. The computational implementation of the methodology has resulted in an improvement in the process of get representation models obtained and published previously by the authors.

It is generally challenging to determine end-to-end delays of applications for maximizing the aggregate system utility subject to timing constraints. Many practical approaches suggest the use of intermediate deadline of tasks in order to control and upper-bound their end-to-end delays. This paper proposes a unified framework for different time-sensitive, global optimization problems, and solves them in a distributed manner using Lagrangian duality. The framework uses global viewpoints to assign intermediate deadlines, taking resource contention among tasks into consideration. For soft real-time tasks, the proposed framework effectively addresses the deadline assignment problem while maximizing the aggregate quality of service. For hard real-time tasks, we show that existing heuristic solutions to the deadline assignment problem can be incorporated into the proposed framework, enriching their mathematical interpretation.

In distributed soft real-time systems, maximizing the aggregate quality-of-service (QoS) is a typical system-wide goal, and addressing the problem through distributed optimization is challenging. Subtasks are subject to unpredictable failures in many practical environments, and this makes the problem much harder. In this paper, we present a robust optimization framework for maximizing the aggregate QoS in the presence of random failures. We introduce the notion of K-failure to bound the effect of random failures on schedulability. Using this notion we define the concept of K-robustness that quantifies the degree of robustness on QoS guarantee in a probabilistic sense. The parameter K helps to tradeoff achievable QoS versus robustness. The proposed robust framework produces optimal solutions through distributed computations on the basis of Lagrangian duality, and we present some implementation techniques. Our simulation results show that the proposed framework can probabilistically guarantee sub-optimal QoS which remains feasible even in the presence of random failures.

Hyperspectral imaging has become one of the main topics in remote sensing applications, which comprise hundreds of spectral bands at different (almost contiguous) wavelength channels over the same area generating large data volumes comprising several GBs per flight. This high spectral resolution can be used for object detection and for discriminate between different objects based on their spectral characteristics. One of the main problems involved in hyperspectral analysis is the presence of mixed pixels, which arise when the spacial resolution of the sensor is not able to separate spectrally distinct materials. Spectral unmixing is one of the most important task for hyperspectral data exploitation. However, the unmixing algorithms can be computationally very expensive, and even high power consuming, which compromises the use in applications under on-board constraints. In recent years, graphics processing units (GPUs) have evolved into highly parallel and programmable systems. Specifically, several hyperspectral imaging algorithms have shown to be able to benefit from this hardware taking advantage of the extremely high floating-point processing performance, compact size, huge memory bandwidth, and relatively low cost of these units, which make them appealing for onboard data processing. In this paper, we propose a parallel implementation of an augmented Lagragian based method for unsupervised hyperspectral linear unmixing on GPUs using CUDA. The method called simplex identification via split augmented Lagrangian (SISAL) aims to identify the endmembers of a scene, i.e., is able to unmix hyperspectral data sets in which the pure pixel assumption is violated. The efficient implementation of SISAL method presented in this work exploits the GPU architecture at low level, using shared memory and coalesced accesses to memory.

Understanding the behavior of c omplex composite materials using mixing procedures is fundamental in several industrial processes. For instance, polymer composites are usually manufactured using dispersion of fillers in polymer melt matrices. The success of the filler dispersion depends both on the complex flow patterns generated and on the polymer melt rheological behavior. Consequently, the availability of a numerical tool that allow to model both fluid and particle would be very useful to increase the process insight. Nowadays there ar e computational tools that allow modeling the behavior of filled systems, taking into account both the behavior of the fluid (Computational Rheology) and the particles (Discrete Element Method). One example is the DPMFoam solver of the OpenFOAM ® framework where the averaged volume fraction momentum and mass conservation equations are used to describe the fluid (continuous phase) rheology, and the Newton’s second law of motion is used to compute the particles (discrete phase) movement. In this work the refer red solver is extended to take into account the elasticity of the polymer melts for the continuous phase. The solver capabilities will be illustrated by studying the effect of the fluid rheology on the filler dispersion, taking into account different fluid types (generalized Newtonian or viscoelastic) and particles volume fraction and size. The results obtained are used to evaluate the relevance of considering the fluid complex rheology for the prediction of the composites morphology

The k-symplectic formulation of field theories is especially simple, since only tangent and cotangent bundles are needed in its description. Its defining elements show a close relationship with those in the symplectic formulation of mechanics. It will be shown that this relationship also stands in the presymplectic case. In a natural way,one can mimick the presymplectic constraint algorithm to obtain a constraint algorithmthat can be applied to k-presymplectic field theory, and more particularly to the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations offield theories defined by a singular Lagrangian, as well as to the unified Lagrangian-Hamiltonian formalism (Skinner--Rusk formalism) for k-presymplectic field theory. Two examples of application of the algorithm are also analyzed.

We present a unified geometric framework for describing both the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms of regular and non-regular time-dependent mechanical systems, which is based on the approach of Skinner and Rusk (1983). The dynamical equations of motion and their compatibility and consistency are carefully studied, making clear that all the characteristics of the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian formalisms are recovered in this formulation. As an example, it is studied a semidiscretization of the nonlinear wave equation proving the applicability of the proposed formalism.

We study spacetime diffeomorphisms in the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian formalisms of generally covariant systems. We show that the gauge group for such a system is characterized by having generators which are projectable under the Legendre map. The gauge group is found to be much larger than the original group of spacetime diffeomorphisms, since its generators must depend on the lapse function and shift vector of the spacetime metric in a given coordinate patch. Our results are generalizations of earlier results by Salisbury and Sundermeyer. They arise in a natural way from using the requirement of equivalence between Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of the system, and they are new in that the symmetries are realized on the full set of phase space variables. The generators are displayed explicitly and are applied to the relativistic string and to general relativity.
