Conventional descriptions place conservation activities between the two poles of active restorative intervention and passive abandonment. This paper proposes that site stewards at mining heritage sites often follow presentation strategies that sit outside this neat dualism. Drawing on material presented in the form of three case studies, this paper identifies the actions these strategies entail and considers the results in terms of an aesthetic of decay. To consolidate the argument, a new overarching term is introduced to describe this strategy: contrived dereliction, in order to foreground its essential features. The paper then outlines the advantages, limitations and requirements of contrived dereliction as a heritage management and presentation practice.

The industrial mining heritage, has nowadays an increasing importance in Portugal. The abandoned structures of this industrial time that defined so intensely our country are being forsaken more and more, suffering a growing degradation though out the time. Is therefore imperative to recover them and produce valuation projects that aim on enhancing the sites. Is in this perspective that the Minas of Barrojeiras of Alcanadas (in Batalha) are inserted. Belonging in the Couto Mineiro do Lena, and being active from 1854 till 1956, these mines were forsaken and later on, stripped from the structures that followed the activities of exploring the mineral. With this in mind, was proposed a valorization circuit that will enhance the location of the mine´s and will be a complement to the exhibition in Batalha´s MCCB.

Australia is currently in the midst of a major resources boom. Resultant growing demands for labour in regional and remote areas have accelerated the recruitment of non resident workers, mostly contractors, who work extended block rosters of 12-hour shifts and are accommodated in work camps, often adjacent to established mining towns. Serious social impacts of these practices, including violence and crime, have generally escaped industry, government and academic scrutiny. This paper highlights some of these impacts on affected regional communities and workers and argues that post-industrial mining regimes serve to mask and privatize these harms and risks, shifting them on to workers, families and communities.

Historically, class has been a key concern in studies of resource affected communities (e.g., Williamson 1982, Warwick and Littlejohn 1992). While work continues, particularly in Britain, today it reflects the rationalization of the British mining sector, and thus focuses largely on mining heritage (e.g., Strangleman et al. 1999, Dicks 2008). In contrast, this chapter examines class relations as manifest in a contemporary setting in rural Australia. This site, the Ravensthorpe Shire in the south west of Western Australia, relied largely on agriculture until 2004 when BHP Billiton commenced construction of a nickel mine in the area. This affected the entire Shire as well as the two rural communities of Ravensthorpe and Hopetoun. The mine, which was officially opened in June 2008, is one of a large number of new mineral and energy developments being established in non metropolitan areas of the country as high international demand for resources fuels significant growth in the sector. In a single six month period in 2009, for example, 15 major minerals and energy projects were completed across the nation and a further 74 projects were at advanced stages (Australian Bureau of Agricultural Economics 2009). A number of these were, as was the case in Ravensthorpe, in what had been traditionally agricultural communities.

Madrid has a long and vast quarring tradition and this is why we think a Stone Museum is needed. At the moment, only have a few monuments to the stone's cutter are erected and we only have been able to recover only some traditions. The european experience in this field, wich is present in this paper, explains the necessity and significance of organizing something alike in Madrid. The study of this patrimony has been carried out inside the wider frame of the Mining Heritage, a project promoved by Madrid Comunity.

ABSTRACT This paper contains contributions on the typological classification of the Pre-Columbian Andean mining mills. It is based on the descriptions of archaeologists, mining engineers, Spanish chroniclers, etc., with references to archaeological and ethnographic evidences present in Cobres, Incahuasi, Rosario de Coyahuaima, Capillitas, Andalgalá and Tacuil (Argentina); Zapar (Chile); Porco and Potosi (Bolivia); as well as in Santiago de Tulpo (Peru), etc. It is necessary to emphasize that the topics treated contribute to the knowledge of the mining mills and constitutes a non well known aspect of the Andean mining heritage.

ABSTRACT The concept of land stewardship remains unknown to the defenders of our country’s mining heritage. Land stewardship is a strategy to conserve the natural, cultural and landscape values of a particular area. To encourage the involvement of the owners, the custodians employ different strategies and tools with the aim of reaching, on a voluntary basis, an agreement between the two parties. When it comes to custody as a strategy, you have to come up with tools and methods to achieve the ownership of the property or to encourage the owners to be involved in its conservation. Those responsible for the actions required, the agents who lead conservation actions are known as Custody institutions. Currently there are innumerable custodians around the world, dedicated to natural or cultural heritage, but those specifically engaged in the protection of mining heritage are scarce. However, the Spanish Society for the Defence of the Geological and Mining Heritage is actually an entity of Custody, in many cases without its partners being aware of this fact. This paper attempts to define the concept of guardianship of a property, applied to the case of mining heritage, and explores different examples of Spanish entities that employ initiatives to acquire property for the purpose of preserving mining heritage in danger disappearing

The goal of this communication is to offer, through computer-aided design tools, a methodology to recover and virtually reconstruct disappeared buildings of our industrial historical heritage. It will be applied to the case of the flour factory "El Puente Colgante" (The Suspended Bridge) in Aranjuez, which was demolished in 2001. The process is as follows: After a historical analysis of the evolution in time of the flour factory, a field work provides data allowing an info graphic reconstruction of the factory. Once this information has been processed, a lifting of the current state is made with AutoCAD, and a three-dimensional model is built with the Rhinoceros application. Then images of the ensemble are obtained with the applications Rhinoceros and V-Ray, ending with a postproduction with Photoshop. The proposed methodology has permitted to obtain a three-dimensional model of the flour factory ?El Puente Colgante? in Aranjuez, with an accurate virtual reconstruction of its original state prior to demolition. The procedure exposed is susceptible to be generalized for any other example of industrial architecture.

The “Innovatio Educativa Tertio Millennio” group has been 10 years developing educational innovation techniques, actually has reached the level of teaching on the technical teachers has developed, and share them with other groups, that can implement them in their teaching activities. UNESCO Chair of Mining and Industrial Heritage has been years working on heritage, and on the one hand teaching in conservation and maintenance of heritage, and on the other doing raise awareness of the meaning of heritage, the social value and as must be managed effectively. Recently these two groups work together, thus is spreading in a much more effective manner the concepts of heritage, its meaning, its value, and how to manage it and provide effective protection. On one hand being a work of dissemination based on internet and on radio broadcasting, and on the other one of teaching based on educational innovation, and courses, conferences, and face-to-face seminars or distance platforms.
