Tämän pro gradu tutkielman tarkoituksena oli selvittää jos ja miten kannattavuus eroaa verkko- ja kivijalkakauppojen välillä. Lisäksi pyrittiin selvittämään onko näiden erojen syitä mahdollista selvittää yritysten taloudellisten tunnuslukujen avulla. Tutkielma koostuu kirjallisuuskatsauksesta ja kvantitatiivisesta tutkimuksesta. Kirjallisuuskatsaus antaa yleiskuvan siitä miten verkkokaupan toiminta eroaa kivijalkaliikkeen toiminnasta ja mitkä ovat näistä eroista koituvat hyödyt ja yleisimmät sudenkuopat. Kvantitatiivisessa tutkimuksessa käytetään Amadeus tietokannasta kerättyjä taloudellisia tietoja Eurooppalaisista verkko- ja kivijalkakaupoista. Tutkimuksessa löydettiin tilastollisesti merkitseviä eroja verkko- ja kivijalkakauppojen kannattavuudessa. Verkkokauppojen todettiin olevan kivijalkakauppoja kannattavampia, mutta taloudellisten tunnuslukujen tilastollisella analysoinnilla ei kyetty löytämään yksittäisiä selittäviä tekijöitä näille eroille.

Purpose We study particular structural and organisational factors affecting the formality of human resource management (HRM) practices in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in South-Eastern European (SEE) post-communist countries, in particular Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) in order to understand the antecedents of formalization in such settings. Design/methodology/approach Adopting a quantitative approach, this study analyses data gathered through a survey of 168 managers of SMEs from throughout the region. Findings The results show that HRM in SMEs in the SEE region can be understood through a three-fold framework which includes: degree of internationalisation of SMEs, sector of SMEs and organisational size of SMEs. These three factors positively affect the level of HRM formalisation in SEE SMEs. These findings are further attributed to the particular political and economic context of the post-communist SEE region. Research limitations/implications Although specific criteria were set for SME selection, we do not suggest that the study reflects a representative picture of the SEE region because we used a purposive sampling methodology. Practical implications This article provides useful insights into the factors which influence HRM in SMEs in a particular context. The findings can help business owners and managers understand how HRM can be applied in smaller organisations, particularly in post-communist SEE business contexts. Originality/value HRM in SMEs in this region has hardly been studied at all despite their importance. Therefore, this exploratory research seeks to expand knowledge relating to the application of HRM in SMEs in SEE countries which have their business environments dominated by different dynamics in comparison to western European ones.

Työn tavoitteena on selvittää kauppaluoton käytön motiiveja, kauppaluottoja käyttävän yrityksen ominaispiirteitä sekä ostovelkojen kehitystä vuosien 2004–2013 aikana. Työtä on tarkasteltu ostavan yrityksen näkökulmasta ja työ on toteutettu kirjallisuuskatsauksena. Kirjallisuuskatsauksen tueksi on tehty tutkimus eurooppalaisten pk-yritysten ostovelkojen kehityksestä ja tutkimusaineisto on haettu AMADEUS-tietokannasta. Kauppaluoton käytön motiiveja ovat transaktiomotiivi, rahoitusmotiivi, saatavat alennukset, laadun varmistus sekä kasvun hallinta. Kauppaluottoja käyttävät yritykset ovat yleensä nuoria, kasvavia ja luottorajoitteisia, mitkä ovat tyypillisiä piirteitä pk-yrityksille. Työn tärkein tulos on, että rahoitusmotiivi ajaa pk-yrityksiä käyttämään kauppaluottoja merkittävänä lyhytaikaisen rahoituksen lähteenä. Työssä tutkittiin eurooppalaisten pk-yritysten ostovelkojen suhdetta taseeseen ja ostovelkojen kiertoaikoja sekä niiden muutoksia. Ostovelkojen suhde taseeseen laski finanssikriisin aikana johtuen luottomarkkinoiden tiukentumisesta ja tarjonnan supistumisesta. Ostovelkojen kiertoajat puolestaan kasvoivat finanssikriisin aikana kompensoiden tarjonnan supistumista.

A 5-day training in Nonimaging Optics for European SME’s employees was carried out in June 2012 in the framework of the FP7 funded Support Action "SMETHODS". The training combined theoretical introduction and hands-on practice. The experience was very positive, and the lessons learned will improve the next scheduled sessions. Introduction The FP7 funded Support Action "SMETHODS" [1] is an initiative of seven European academic institutions to strengthen Europe's optics and photonics industry, which has started on 1 September 2011. Participation in training sessions is free for participants, who are selected with priority will be given to employees of small and medium sized European enterprises (SMEs). The consortium in SMETHODS is formed by seven partners that are the most prominent academic institutions in optical design in their countries. Through fully integrated collaborative training sessions, the consortium provides professional assistance as well as hands-on training in a variety of design tasks in four domains: (1) imaging optics, (2) nonimaging optics, (3) wave optics, and (4) diffractive optics. For each of this domains domain, 5-day training sessions are scheduled to be hold in different locations throughout Europe, four times in two years, the teach four times in a 2.5 years period.

Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a key role in the EU economy.[1] According to the latest “SME performance review” published by the European Commission,[2] in 2014 there were 22 million SMEs active in the non-financial business sectors, generating more than €3.7 trillion in added value and employing approximately 90 million people. SMEs’ contribution to the European economy becomes even more apparent if one considers that 99 out of every 100 enterprises active in the EU non-financial economy are SMEs, and that these firms account for about 67% of the total employment and some 60% of the overall added value produced in Europe. Against this background, enhancing the competitiveness of European SMEs is essential in order to foster the competitiveness of the EU economy as a whole. And since the competitiveness of European SMEs in the global arena largely depends on their ability to innovate,[3] unlocking the innovation potential of SMEs becomes pivotal to fostering growth and jobs in Europe.

The European CloudSME project that incorporated 24 European SMEs, besides five academic partners, has finished its funded phase in March 2016. This presentation will provide a summary of the results of the project, and will analyze the challenges and differences when developing “SME Gateways”, when compared to “Science Gateways”. CloudSME started in 2013 with the aim to develop a cloud-based simulation platform for manufacturing and engineering SMEs. The project was based around industry use-cases, five of which were incorporated in the project from the start, and seven additional ones that were added as an outcome of an open call in January 2015. CloudSME utilized science gateway related technologies, such as the commercial CloudBroker Platform and the WS-PGRADE/gUSE Gateway Framework that were developed in the preceding SCI-BUS project. As most important outcome, the project successfully implemented 12 industry quality demonstrators that showcase how SMEs in the manufacturing and engineering sector can utilize cloud-based simulation services. Some of these solutions are already market-ready and currently being rolled out by the software vendor companies. Some others require further fine-tuning and the implementation of commercial interfaces before being put into the market. The CloudSME use-cases came from a very wide application spectrum. The project implemented, for example, an open marketplace for micro-breweries to optimize their production and distribution processes, an insole design validation service to be used by podiatrists and shoe manufacturers, a generic stock management solution for manufacturing SMEs, and also several “classical” high-performance computing case-studies, such as fluid dynamics simulations for model helicopter design, and dual-fuel internal combustion engine simulation. As the project generated significant impact and interest in the manufacturing sector, 10 CloudSME stakeholders established a follow-up company called CloudSME UG for the future commercialization of the results. Besides the success stories, this talk would also like to highlight the difficulties when transferring the outcomes of an academic research project to real commercial applications. The different mindset and approach of academic and industry partners presented a real challenge for the CloudSME project, with some interesting and valuable lessons learnt. The academic way of supporting SMEs did not always work well with the rather different working practices and culture of many participants. Also, the quality of support regarding operational solutions required by the SMEs is well beyond the typical support services academic institutions are prepared for. Finally, a clear lack of trust in academic solutions when compared to commercial solutions was also imminent. The talk will highlight some of these challenges underpinned by the implementation of the CloudSME use-cases.
