There is a growing interest in the use of megavoltage cone-beam computed tomography (MV CBCT) data for radiotherapy treatment planning. To calculate accurate dose distributions, knowledge of the electron density (ED) of the tissues being irradiated is required. In the case of MV CBCT, it is necessary to determine a calibration-relating CT number to ED, utilizing the photon beam produced for MV CBCT. A number of different parameters can affect this calibration. This study was undertaken on the Siemens MV CBCT system, MVision, to evaluate the effect of the following parameters on the reconstructed CT pixel value to ED calibration: the number of monitor units (MUs) used (5, 8, 15 and 60 MUs), the image reconstruction filter (head and neck, and pelvis), reconstruction matrix size (256 by 256 and 512 by 512), and the addition of extra solid water surrounding the ED phantom. A Gammex electron density CT phantom containing EDs from 0.292 to 1.707 was imaged under each of these conditions. The linear relationship between MV CBCT pixel value and ED was demonstrated for all MU settings and over the range of EDs. Changes in MU number did not dramatically alter the MV CBCT ED calibration. The use of different reconstruction filters was found to affect the MV CBCT ED calibration, as was the addition of solid water surrounding the phantom. Dose distributions from treatment plans calculated with simulated image data from a 15 MU head and neck reconstruction filter MV CBCT image and a MV CBCT ED calibration curve from the image data parameters and a 15 MU pelvis reconstruction filter showed small and clinically insignificant differences. Thus, the use of a single MV CBCT ED calibration curve is unlikely to result in any clinical differences. However, to ensure minimal uncertainties in dose reporting, MV CBCT ED calibration measurements could be carried out using parameter-specific calibration measurements.

Formulation of a 16-term error model, based on the four-port ABCD-matrix and voltage and current variables, is outlined. Matrices A, B, C, and D are each 2 x 2 submatrices of the complete 4 x 4 error matrix. The corresponding equations are linear in terms of the error parameters, which simplifies the calibration process. The parallelism with the network analyzer calibration procedures and the requirement of five two-port calibration measurements are stressed. Principles for robust choice of equations are presented. While the formulation is suitable for any network analyzer measurement, it is expected to be a useful alternative for the nonlinear y-parameter approach used in intrinsic semiconductor electrical and noise parameter measurements and parasitics' deembedding.

A method is discussed for measuring the acoustic impedance of tubular objects that gives accurate results for a wide range of frequencies. The apparatus that is employed is similar to that used in many previously developed methods; it consists of a cylindrical measurement duct fitted with several microphones, of which two are active in each measurement session, and a driver at one of its ends. The object under study is fitted at the other end. The impedance of the object is determined from the microphone signals obtained during excitation of the air inside the 1 duct by the driver, and from three coefficients that are pre-determined using four calibration measurements with closed cylindrical tubes. The calibration procedure is based on the simple mathematical relationships between the impedances of the calibration tubes, and does not require knowledge of the propagation constant. Measurements with a cylindrical tube yield an estimate of the attenuation constant for plane waves, which is found to differ from the theoretical prediction by less than 1.4% in the frequency range 1 kHz-20 kHz. Impedance measurements of objects with abrupt changes in diameter are found to be in good agreement with multimodal theory.

Capillary-based systems for measuring the input impedance of musical wind instruments were first developed in the mid-20th century and remain in widespread use today. In this paper, the basic principles and assumptions underpinning the design of such systems are examined. Inexpensive modifications to a capillary-based impedance measurement set-up made possible due to advances in computing and data acquisition technology are discussed. The modified set-up is able to measure both impedance magnitude and impedance phase even though it only contains one microphone. In addition, a method of calibration is described that results in a significant improvement in accuracy when measuring high impedance objects on the modified capillary-based system. The method involves carrying out calibration measurements on two different objects whose impedances are well-known theoretically. The benefits of performing two calibration measurements (as opposed to the one calibration measurement that has been traditionally used) are demonstrated experimentally through input impedance measurements on two test objects and a Boosey and Hawkes oboe.

Comets are thought to be the most pristine bodies present in the Solar System. In consequence of spending the majority of their existence beyond 30 AU, their composition can give insights on the physical and chemical conditions during their formation. Since August 2014 the European Space Agency spacecraft Rosetta accompanies the Jupiter family comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko on its way to perihelion and beyond. In this study the isotope fractionation of 34S are reported in H2S, OCS, SO2, S2, and CS2 at 67P. In addition for the first time the isotope fractionation for 33S is presented for cometary volatiles. The ratio 32S/33S is given for H2S, SO2 and a tentative value is given for CS2. With a mean value of -50 ± 22‰ and -306 ± 31‰ for δ34S and δ33S respectively, H2S shows a significant depletion in both 34S and 33S. For SO2 the depletion is less distinct with δ34S and δ33S being -67 ± 40‰ and -130 ± 53‰, respectively. The strongest depletion is present for CS2 with -114 ± 21‰and -276 ± 55‰, respectively. For OCS and S2 only δ34S could be determined which is -252 ± 77‰ and -357 ± 145‰, respectively. A comparison with sulfur isotopic ratios measured in SiC grains revealed that both SiC grains and the five volatile species have similar sulfur isotopic ratios. However, it is beyond the scope of this work to investigate the possibility of a link between SiC grains and cometary ices. Nevertheless, mass-dependent or mass-independent fractionation due to photo dissociation can be ruled out as sole cause of the seen depletion of 33S and 34S. Furthermore, an upper limit of (9.64 ± 0.19)·10.4 for D/H in HDS has been determined. This value is about a factor two higher than D/H in H2O for the same comet reported by (Altwegg et al., 2015). Besides the investigation concerning isotopic ratios of sulfur bearing species in this work the calibration and characterization of ROSINA/DFMS has been continued. Here it is reported about the deviation of the mass scale for MCP/LEDA low resolution spectra and the calibration measurements performed in the laboratory. Furthermore the outcome of the attempt to describe the sensitivity of DFMS with an empirical function will be discussed. The last part of the characterization of DFMS is dedicated to determine the so-called individual pixel gain for the laboratory and the flight model. Moreover, correlation between the depletion’s manifestation of the MCP with respect to the applied voltages has been investigated for both models. It has been found that further measurements are needed to understand the manifestation of depletion at the laboratory model. For the model on board of Rosetta it could be shown that most of the present feature are due to the usage of the MCP and suggestions have been made in order to answer the remaining question considering the depletion of the MCP.

The thermal diffusion enrichment apparatus in use in Amsterdam before 1967, has been rebuilt in the Groningen Radiocarbon Dating Laboratory. It has been shown to operate reliably and reproducibly. A reasonable agreement exists between the theoretical calculations and the experimental results. The 14C enrichment of a CO sample is deduced from the simultaneous mass 30 enrichment, which is measured with a mass spectrometer. The relation between both enrichments follows from a series of calibration measurements. The over-all accuracy in the enrichment is a few percent, equivalent to a few hundred years in age. The main problem in dating very old samples is their possible contamination with recent carbon. Generally, careful sample selection and rigorous pretreatment reduce sample contamination to an acceptable value. Also, it has been established that laboratory contamination, due to a memory effect in the combustion system and to impurities in the oxygen and nitrogen gas used for combustion, can be eliminated. A detailed analysis shows that the counter background in our set-up is almost exclusively caused by cosmic ray muons. The measurement of 28 early glacial samples, mostly from North-west Europe, has yielded a consistent set of ages. These indicate the existence of three early glacial interstadials; using the Weichselian definitions: Amersfoort starting at 68 200 ± 1100, Brørup at 64 400 ± 800 and Odderade at 60 500 ± 600 years BP. This 14C chronology shows good agreement with the Camp Century chronology and the dated palaeo sea levels. The discrepancy in the age of the early part of the Last Glacial on the 14C time scale and on that adopted for the deep-sea d18 record, must probably be attributed to the use of a generalized d18 curve and a wrong interpretation of this curve in terms of three Barbados terraces.

Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is widely used for assessment of soil moisture variability in field soils. Because GPR does not measure soil water content directly, it is common practice to use calibration functions that describe its relationship with the soil dielectric properties and textural parameters. However, the large variety of models complicates the selection of the appropriate function. In this article an overview is presented of the different functions available, including volumetric models, empirical functions, effective medium theories, and frequency-specific functions. Using detailed information presented in summary tables, the choice for which calibration function to use can be guided by the soil variables available to the user, the frequency of the GPR equipment, and the desired level of detail of the output. This article can thus serve as a guide for GPR practitioners to obtain soil moisture values and to estimate soil dielectric properties.

The two-photon resonances of atomic hydrogen (? = 2 × 205.1 nm), atomic nitrogen (? = 2 × 206.6 nm) and atomic oxygen (? = 2 × 225.6 nm) are investigated together with two selected transitions in krypton (? = 2×204.2 nm) and xenon (? = 2×225.5 nm). The natural lifetimes of the excited states, quenching coefficients for the most important collisions partners, and the relevant ratios of the two-photon excitation cross sections are measured. These data can be applied to provide a calibration for two-photon laser-induced fluorescence measurements based on comparisons with spectrally neighbouring noble gas resonances.

A collection of 24 seawaters from various worldwide locations and differing depth was culled to measure their chlorine isotopic composition (delta(37)Cl). These samples cover all the oceans and large seas: Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Antarctic oceans, Mediterranean and Red seas. This collection includes nine seawaters from three depth profiles down to 4560 mbsl. The standard deviation (2sigma) of the delta(37)Cl of this collection is +/-0.08 parts per thousand, which is in fact as large as our precision of measurement ( +/- 0.10 parts per thousand). Thus, within error, oceanic waters seem to be an homogeneous reservoir. According to our results, any seawater could be representative of Standard Mean Ocean Chloride (SMOC) and could be used as a reference standard. An extended international cross-calibration over a large range of delta(37)Cl has been completed. For this purpose, geological fluid samples of various chemical compositions and a manufactured CH3Cl gas sample, with delta(37)Cl from about -6 parts per thousand to +6 parts per thousand have been compared. Data were collected by gas source isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) at the Paris, Reading and Utrecht laboratories and by thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) at the Leeds laboratory. Comparison of IRMS values over the range -5.3 parts per thousand to +1.4 parts per thousand plots on the Y=X line, showing a very good agreement between the three laboratories. On 11 samples, the trend line between Paris and Reading Universities is: delta(37)Cl(Reading)= (1.007 +/- 0.009)delta(37)Cl(Paris) - (0.040 +/- 0.025), with a correlation coefficient: R-2 = 0.999. TIMS values from Leeds University have been compared to IRMS values from Paris University over the range -3.0 parts per thousand to +6.0 parts per thousand. On six samples, the agreement between these two laboratories, using different techniques is good: delta(37)Cl(Leeds)=(1.052 +/- 0.038)delta(37)Cl(Paris) + (0.058 +/- 0.099), with a correlation coefficient: R-2 = 0.995. The present study completes a previous cross-calibration between the Leeds and Reading laboratories to compare TIMS and IRMS results (Anal. Chem. 72 (2000) 2261). Both studies allow a comparison of IRMS and TIMS techniques between delta(37)Cl values from -4.4 parts per thousand to +6.0 parts per thousand and show a good agreement: delta(37)Cl(TIMS)=(1.039 +/- 0.023)delta(37)Cl(IRMS)+(0.059 +/- 0.056), with a correlation coefficient: R-2 = 0.996. Our study shows that, for fluid samples, if chlorine isotopic compositions are near 0 parts per thousand, their measurements either by IRMS or TIMS will give comparable results within less than +/- 0.10 parts per thousand, while for delta(37)Cl values as far as 10 parts per thousand (either positive or negative) from SMOC, both techniques will agree within less than +/- 0.30 parts per thousand. Tracer gas techniques have been the most appropriate experimental method of determining airflows and ventilation rates in houses. However, current trends to reduce greenhouse gas effects have prompted the need for alternative techniques, such as passive sampling. In this research passive sampling techniques have been used to demonstrate the potential to fulfil these requirements by using solutions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and solid phase microextraction (SPME) fibres. These passive sampling techniques have been calibrated against tracer gas decay techniques and measurements from a standard orifice plate. Two constant sources of volatile organic compounds were diffused into two sections of a humidity chamber and sampled using SPME fibres. From a total of four SPME fibres (two in each section), reproducible results were obtained. Emission rates and air movement from one section to the other were predicted using developed algorithms. Comparison of the SPME fibre technique with that of the tracer gas technique and measurements from an orifice plate showed similar results with good precision and accuracy. With these fibres, infiltration rates can be measured over grab samples in a time weighted averaged period lasting from 10 minutes up to several days. Key words: passive samplers, solid phase microextraction fibre, tracer gas techniques, airflow, air infiltration, houses.
