Optically clear glasses of various compositions in the system (100-x) TeO2-x(1.5K(2)O-Li2O-2.5Nb(2)O(5)) (2 <= x <= 12, in molar ratio) were prepared by the melt-quenching technique. The glassy nature of the as-quenched samples was established via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The amorphous and the crystalline nature of the as-quenched and heat-treated samples were confirmed by the X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) studies. Transparent glasses comprising potassium lithium niobate (K3Li2Nb5O15) microcrystallites on the surface and nanocrystallites within the glass were obtained by controlled heat-treatment of the as-quenched glasses just above the glass transition temperature (T-g). The optical transmission spectra of these glasses and glass-crystal composites of various compositions were recorded in the 200-2500 nm wavelength range. Various optical parameters such as optical band gap, Urbach energy, refractive index were determined. Second order optical non-linearity was established in the heat-treated samples by employing the Maker-Fringe method.

Phase separation (PS) in hole-doped cobaltites (La1-xSrxCoxO3) is drawing renewed interest recently. In particular, the magnetic behavior of La0.85Sr0.15CoO3 has been subjected to a controversial debate for the past several years; while some groups show evidence for magnetic PS, others show spin glass (SG) behavior. Here, an attempt is made to resolve the controversy related to ``PS versus SG'' behavior in this compound. We present the results of a comprehensive investigation of the dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, and the magnetotransport properties of La0.85Sr0.15CoO3 samples. We contemplate that the magnetic PS in La0.85Sr0.15CoO3 is neither intrinsic nor inherent, but it is a consequence of the preparation conditions. It is realized that a low temperature annealed (LTA) sample shows PS whereas the high temperature annealed (HTA) sample shows SG behavior. The Brillouin-like behavior of field cooled dc magnetization and apparently no frequency dependent peak shift in ac susceptibility for the LTA sample characterize it to be of ferromagneticlike whereas a kink in field cooled dc magnetization and a considerable amount (similar to 3 K) of frequency dependent peak shift in the ac susceptibility for the HTA sample characterize it to be of SG state. The magnetotransport properties show that the HTA sample is more semiconducting as compared to the LTA sample. This is interpreted in terms of the presence of isolated as well as coalescing metallic ferromagnetic clusters in the case of LTA sample. The magnetoresistance (MR) at 10 K for the HTA sample exhibits a huge value (similar to 65%) as compared to the LTA sample, and it monotonically decreases with the rise in temperature. Such a high value of MR in the case of HTA sample is strongly believed to be due to the spin dependent part of random potential distribution. Further, the slow decay of remnant magnetization with progress of time and the existence of hysteresis at higher temperatures (up to 200 K) in the case of LTA sample as compared to the HTA sample clearly unveil different magnetic states associated with them.

Transparent glasses and glass nano crystal composites (GNCs) of various compositions in the system (100 - x)Li2B4O7-x (BaO-Bi2O3-Nb2O5) (where x = 10, 20, and 30 in molar ratio) were fabricated via splat-quenching technique. The glassy nature of the as quenched samples was established by differential thermal analyses. X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) studies confirmed the formation of layered perovskite BBN via a fluorite like phase. TEM studies revealed the presence of 10 nm sized spherical crystallites of fluorite like BaBi2Nb2O9 phase in the glassy matrix of Li2B4O7 (LBO). The influence of composition on the dielectric and the optical properties (transmission, optical band gap) of these samples has been investigated. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Two series of glasses were prepared, xNa2O, yZnO, 100 - x - yB2O3 and 30 - xNa2O, xZnO, 70B2O3 (mol%). The temperature dependence of the direct current resistivity was measured from room temperature to about 700 K and in both series of glasses we observed a simple Arrhenius type of temperature dependence. However, the resistivity of the binary alkali glass increased steeply by as much as two orders of magnitude with the addition of even a small quantity of ZnO and remained virtually unaffected by further addition of ZnO. The resistivity decreases gradually with increasing pressure in Na2O-B2O3 but increases with increasing pressure with the addition of ZnO.

Glasses of various compositions in the system (100 - x)Li-2 B-4 O-7 - x (SrO-Bi2O3-Nb2O5) (10 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 60) (in molar ratio) were prepared via a conventional melt-quenching technique. The glassy nature of the as-quenched samples was established by Differential Thermal Analyses (DTA). X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopic (TEM) studies confirmed the amorphous nature of the as quenched and crystallinity in the heat-treated samples. The formation of nanocrystalline layered perovskite SrBi2Nb2O9 (SBN) phase, in the samples heat-treated at temperatures higher than 550degreesC, through an intermediate fluorite phase in the LBO glass matrix was confirmed by both the XRD and High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM). The samples that were heat-treated at two different temperatures, 550 and 625degreesC, (containing 0.35 and 0.47 mum sized SBN crystallites) exhibited broad dielectric anomalies in the vicinity of ferroelectric to paraelectric transition temperature of the parent SBN ceramics. A downward shift in the phase transition temperature was observed with decreasing crystallite size of SBN. The observation of pyroelectric and ferroelectric properties for the present samples confirmed their polar nature.

We report the results of the electrical switching studies performed on the bulk Al20GexTe80-x (2.5 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 15) chalcogenide glasses. The well known topological features, mechanical and chemical thresholds are observed. Mechanical threshold is seen at a mean coordination number of atoms, < r > = 2.50 (x = 5) a clear shift rom the mean field value of < r > = 2.4 whereas the chemical threshold is observed at < r > = 2.65 (x = 12.5) as predicted by the chemically ordered covalent network model These experiments are a sequel to similar experiments on Al20AsxTe80-x glasses in which mechanical threshold was seen at < r > = 2.60 and no chemical threshold was observed These results am well understood by a chemical bond picture developed in this article.

Transparent colorless glasses in the ternary BaOTiO2B2O3 system were fabricated via conventional melt-quenching technique. The glasses with certain molar concentrations of BaO and TiO2 on heat treatment at appropriate temperatures yielded nanocrystalline phase of TiO2 associated with the crystallite size in the 515 nm range. Nanocrystallized glasses exhibited high refractive index (n = 2.15) measured at lambda = 543 nm. These glasses were found to be hydrophobic in nature associated with the contact angle of 90 degrees. These high-index glass nanocrystal composites would be of potential interest for optical device applications.

Alternating Differential Scanning Calorimetric (ADSC) studies on quaternary Ge15Te80-xIn5Agx glasses show the non-reversing enthalpy (Delta H-NR) at T-g to exhibit a broad global minimum in the 8% <= x <= 16% range of Ag, an observation that is taken evidence for existence of an Intermediate Phase (IP) in that range. Glasses at x < 8% are in the flexible phase while those at x > 16% in the stressed-rigid phase. The nature of crystalline phases formed upon crystallization of bulk glasses are elucidated by XRD studies, and reveal presence of Te, GeTe, Ag8GeTe6, AgTe, In2Te3 and In4Te3 phases. These experiments also reveal that the fraction of Ag- bearing phases increases while those of Te- bearing ones decreases with increasing x, suggesting progressive replacement of Te-Te bonds by Ag-Te bonds. Monophasic Ba2NaNb5O15 was crystallized at nanometer scale (12-36 nm) in 2BaO-0.5Na(2)O-2.5Nb(2)O(5)- 4.5B(2)O(3) glass system. To begin with, optically transparent glasses, in this system, were fabricated via the conventional melt. quenching technique. The amorphous and glassy characteristics of the as-quenched samples were respectively confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction and differential thermal analyses. Nearly homogeneous distribution of Ba2NaNb5O15 (BNN) nanocrystals associated with tungsten bronze structure akin to their bulk parent structure was accomplished by subjecting the as-fabricated glasses to appropriate heat-treatment temperatures. Indeed transmission electron microscopy (TEM) carried out on these samples corroborated the presence of Ba2NaNb5O15 nanocrystals dispersed in a continuous glass matrix. The as-quenched glasses were similar to 75% transparent in the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum. The optical band gap and refractive index were found to have crystallite size (at nanoscale) dependence. The optical band gap increased with the decrease in crystallite size. The refractive indices of the glass nanocrystal composites as determined by Brewster angle method were rationalized using different empirical models. The refractive index dispersion with wavelength of light was analyzed on the basis of the Sellmeier relations. At room temperature under UV excitation (355 nm) these glass nanocrystal composites displayed violet-blue emission which was ascribed to the defects states.

Dendritic growth of trigonal and square bipyramidal structures of LiTaO3 nanocrystallites, of 19-30 nm size, was observed when 1.5Li(2)O-2B(2)O(3)-0.5Ta(2)O(5) glasses were subjected to controlled heat treatment between 530 degrees C and 560 degrees C/3 h. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectral studies carried out on the heat-treated samples confirmed the formation of a LiTaO3 phase along with a minor phase of ferroelectric Li2B4O7. The sample that was heat-treated at 550 degrees C/3 h was found to possess similar to 26 nm sized crystallites which exhibited a pyroelectric coefficient as high as 15 nC cm(-2) K-1 which is in the same range (23 nC cm(-2) K-1) as that of single crystalline LiTaO3 at room temperature. The corresponding figures of merit that were calculated for the fast pulse detector (F-i), the large area pyroelectric detector (F-v) and the pyroelectric point detector (F-D) were 0.517 x 10(-10) m V-1, 0.244 m(2) C-1 and 1.437 x 10(-5) Pa-1/2, respectively. Glass nanocrystal composites comprising similar to 30 nm sized crystallites exhibited broad Maker fringes and the second harmonic intensity emanated from these was 0.5 times that of KDP single crystals.

We present the results of a study that uses theoretical and experimental methods to investigate the characteristics of the upconversion luminescence of Tm3+/Yb3+ codoped TeO2-BiCl3 glass system as a function of the BiCl3 fraction. These glasses are potentially important in the design of upconversion fiber lasers. Effect of local environment around Tm3+ on upconversion fluorescence intensity was analyzed by theoretical calculations. The structure and spectroscopic properties were investigated in the experiments by measuring the Raman spectra, IR transmission spectra, and absorption and fluorescence intensities at room temperature. The results indicate that blue luminescence quantum efficiency increases with increasing BiCl3 content from 10 to 60 mol%, which were interpreted by the increase of asymmetry of glass structure, decrease of phonon energy and removing of OH- groups. The room temperature AC conductivity σ(ω) of amorphous AsSe samples with various compositions have been measured in the 103 -106 Hz frequency range. The results indicate that ac conductivity is proportional to n with n=0.89±.01 in the 103 –106 Hz frequency range. Consideration of different models for the frequency –dependent conductivity leads to thermally activated hopping as the most likely process

A Li(2)O-B(2)O(3)-Al(2)O(3) glass system, un-doped and doped with LiF, and/or TiO(2) was synthesized by the fusion method and its physical properties were investigated by thermoluminescence (TL), X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The samples were subjected to gamma-rays from a colbalt-60 ((60)Co) source. These techniques provided evidence of LiF and LiF doped with Ti crystal formation in the glass system. A TL glow peak at about 433 K was sensitive to (60)Co gamma-rays and showed good linearity with doses and consequently could be used to quantify radiation doses. The local structure of an ion-conducting glass with nominal composition 50B(2)O(3)-10PbO-40LiF has been investigated by complementary (7)Li, (11)B, (19)F, and (207)Pb single- and double-resonance experiments. The results give insight into the structural role of the lithium fluoride additive in borate glasses: (1) LiF is seen to actively participate in the network transformation process contributing to the conversion of three- into four-coordinate boron units, as shown by (11)B single-resonance as well as by (11)B{(19)F} and (19)F{(11)B} double-resonance experiments. (2) (19)F signal quantification experiments suggest substantial fluoride loss, presumably caused by formation of volatile BF(3). A part of the fluoride remains in the dopant role, possibly in the form of small LiF-like cluster domains, which serve as a mobile ion supply. (3) The extent of lithium-fluorine and lead-fluorine interactions has been characterized by (7)Li{(19)F} and (207)Pb{(19)F} REDOR and SEDOR experiments. On the basis of these results, a quantitative structural description of this system has been developed.
