A sensitive preconcentration procedure for spectrophotometeric determination of aluminum was developed. Aluminum as aluminon complex is adsorbed on microcrystalline naphthalene. The naphthalene containing the complex is dissolved in 3 mL of acetone and its absorbance is measured at 544 nm. The effect of various factors on the preconcentration of aluminum was investigated. The calibration graph was linear in the range of 1-60 mg L-1. The limit of detection was 0.52 mg L-1 and relative standard deviation for the determination of 5 mg L-1 was 2.65%. The proposed solid phase extraction procedure was applied to determination of aluminum in food samples.

Nitrate is quantitatively retained with 2,6-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-4-phenyl pyrylium perchlorate (PPP) on microcrystalline naphthalene in the pH range of 6.5-9.0 from a large volume of aqueous solutions of various samples. The method was based on the complexation between PPP and nitrate and then, extraction of the resulted complex from aqueous solution by microcrystalline naphthalene. The solid mass consisting of the nitrate complex and naphthalene was then dissolved in dimethyl formamide (DMF) and absorption of the resulted solution was obtained at 328 nm. The linear calibration range for the determination of nitrate was 15-135 μg L-1 with the detection limit of 10 μg L-1.

The solution fluorescence of N-alkyl-2,3-naphthalimides (1-4) in polar protic and aprotic solvents was compared to the emission from solid samples resulting from the imide complexation with b-cyclodextrin or adsorption on the surface of microcrystalline cellulose. Solid samples of the inclusion complex 2,3-naphthalimides/b-cyclodextrin show maximum for fluorescence emission significantly different to the observed in methanolic solution. Beside this, a clear effect on the alkyl chain length could be observed for these samples which is probably due to differences in probe location inside the cyclodextrin cavity. The constancy for fluorescence quantum yield and fluorescence lifetime for the imides 1 - 4 adsorbed on microcrystalline cellulose suggests that, independently of the polarity of the solvent used for sample preparation, the probe is preferentially located on the cellulose surface. An increase of fluorescence quantum yield and fluorescence lifetime for solid samples, when compared to the values obtained in solution for the different solvents employed in this study (acetonitrile, methanol and water), is fully in accordance with a decrease of the probe mobility due to inclusion in b-cyclodextrin or to adsorption on cellulose.

Irradiation of a,a-dimethylvalerophenone (1) adsorbed on microcrystalline cellulose employing methanol as the solvent shows a Norrish Type II/Type I ratio of 1.0±0.1. In solution, values of 2.3±0.3 in benzene and 8.7±2.0 in terc-butanol were obtained. The cyclization/elimination ratio for the Norrish Type II reaction of 1 shows values of 1.2±0.3 in cellulose, 17.9±2.7 in benzene and 3.2±03 in terc-butanol. When samples of 1/microcrystalline cellulose were prepared employing n-hexane, the Type II/Type I (29.5±2.9) and the cycl/elim (113.3±12.1) ratios were dramatically modified. These results demonstrate the difference in the behavior of 1 when entrapped in the cellulose chains or adsorbed on the cellulose surface.

A rapid, sensitive and reliable thin-layer chromatography/spectrophotometry screening procedure was developed for quantitative determination of diuretics associated in pharmaceutical dosage forms. The chromatographic method employed microcrystalline cellulose and butanol : acetic acid : water (4:1:1) or amilic alcohol : ammonium hydroxide 25% (9:1) as mobile phases and detection by U.V. light. The drugs were extracted using a simple procedure and were quantified by U.V. spectrophotometry. Results varied from 97.5 to 102.5% and are similar to those obtained by conventional methods. This method of quantification of diuretics is promising for quality control of drugs.

In this work the separation of the chiral anesthetic compounds ketamine and bupivacaine was development using two chiral stationary phases (CSP). Ketamine enantiomers were well separate in the polysaccharide-based CSP (microcrystalline cellulose triacetate - MCTA) while bupivacaine in the tartardiamide-based CSP (Kromasil CHI-TBB). In both cases, the effect of temperature was investigated under analytical conditions. An improvement in the separation performance with temperature was observed. Thermodynamic parameters were evaluated by the van't Hoff plot. We concluded that enthalpic effects controlled the retention in these chiral columns. The enantiomers of ketamine and bupivacaine were separated under overloaded conditions with a good performance.

The goal of this work is the development and validation of an analytical method for fast quantification of sibutramine in pharmaceutical formulations, using diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy and partial least square regression. The multivariate model was elaborated from 22 mixtures containing sibutramine and excipients (lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, colloidal silicon dioxide and magnesium stearate) and using fragmented (750-1150/ 1350-1500/ 1850-1950/ 2600-2900 cm-1) and smoothing spectral data. Using 10 latent variables, excellent predictive capacity were observed in the calibration (n=20, RMSEC=0.004, R= 0.999) and external validation (n=5, RMSEC= 9.36, R=0.999) phases. In the analysis of synthetic mixtures the precision (SD=3,47%) was compatible with the rules of the Agencia Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária (ANVISA-Brazil). In the analysis of commercial drugs good agreement was observed between spectroscopic and chromatographic methods.

This study was carried out to synthesize, characterize and evaluate the application of mesoestruturated catalysts MCM-41, 5%MoO3-MCM-41 and 5%NiO-MCM-41 in the hydrolysis of microcrystalline cellulose. XRD results indicate that the phase of mesoporous MCM-41 was obtained and that the introduction of metal oxides did not affect this mesoporous phase. About the heterogeneous hydrolysis reaction, it was observed that the increase in temperature results in a higher concentration of glucose and the catalyst 5%MoO3-MCM-41 provides the highest concentrations of glucose.

A simple, precise, rapid and low-cost potentiometric method for captopril determination in pure form and in pharmaceutical preparations is proposed. Captopril present in tablets containing known quantity of drug was potentiometrically titrated in aqueous solution with NaOH using a glass pH electrode, coupled to an autotitrator. No interferences were observed in the presence of common components of the tablets as lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, starch and magnesium stearate. The analytical results obtained by applying the proposed method compared very favorably with those obtained by the United States Pharmacopoeia Standard procedure. Recovery of captopril from various tablet dosage formulations range from 98.0 to 102.0%.
