Nous avons travaillé à Bello Horizonte, Etat de Minas, avec le venin de 4 espèces de Scorpions: Tityus bahiensis (C. L. KOCK, 1836). Tityus serrulatus (LUTZ-MELLO, 1922). Tityus dorsomaculatus (LUTZ MELLO, 1922). Bothriurus (espèce em étude), sur un total de 13.640 individus. Nous avons essayé et observe laction du venin sur 97 espèces differentes dêtres vivants depuis les chlamydozoaires jusquà l«Homo sapiens». Nous avons cherché à déterminer une unité toxique «plus précise, plus régulierè». Les étalons dits «unité vésicule», «unité morsure» sont inconstants et sans rigueur. Tout au plus, peuvent ils server à létude de laction générale du venin, et cela meme, dans certains cas seulement. Nous avons employé la pesée pour determiner lunité toxique. Ce qui est important pour qui étudie ces sujets ce nest pás lê nombre de vésicules, mais bien la quantité de venin humide ou desséché quelles contiennent. La balance, pour notre travail, est um moyen indicateur de bien plus grande précision que la «vésicule» ou la «morsure». Nous sommes parvenus à prouver quil existe une relation constante entre le poid brut des vésicules et la quantité de venin humide ou desséché quelles contiennent dans leur intérieur. Donc em pesant les vésicules, nous pesons indirectement le venin. Peu nous importe quil y ait 10 ou 100 vésicules. Il nous importe seulement de savoir combien elles pèsent, et de déterminer par ce fait, la quantité proportionnelle de vain pur. La technique générale est la suivante: Nous pesons um certain nombre de vésicules. Nous triturons ensuite, dans um mortier stérilisé et nous emulsionnons, par laddition consécutive deau distillée, stérilisée. Nous filtrons lémulsion sur le papier filtre employé em chimie, préalablement taré et desséché dans une atmosphere de chlorure de calcium. Après le filtrage on sèche à nouveau les papiers filtre employés d'abord à l'étuve et ensuite dans la même atmosphère de chlorure de calcium. Nous pesons plusieurs fois et on obtient la moyenne de ces pesées. On soustrait de cette dernière pesée le taux des substances non venimeuses, glandulaires, également dissoutes et calculées à 23 du poids brut et celles retenues par les papiers,-on obtient ainsi la moyenne réelle du venin pur contenu dans les vésicules utilisèés. Une simple divisiôn suffit pour fixer la moyenne de chacune. Ces données ont été vérifiées par les expériences faites avec du venin pur, largement obtenu dans notre Laboratoire. Nous avons trouvé de la sorte pour une vésicule de Tityus serrulatus: 0,gr.000,386 de T. bahiensis: 0,gr.001.261.24 de venin pur ce qui donne. 7/15,96 pour la 1ère. 1/8,36 pour la 2ème du poids sec de chaque vésicule. Le poids sec, pour une moyenne obtenue de 1.000 vésicules, fut de 0,gr.008,236 pour Tityus bahiensis. Maximum 0,gr.011. Minimum 0,gr.004.4 pour chacun. Pour Tityus serrulatus, en 1.049 vésicules le poids fut de 0,gr.006,08. Maximum 0,gr.014.03. Minimum 0,gr.003,1 pour chacun. C'est pour cette raison que l'unité-vésicule est incertaine. 2 poules A et B.; l'une, A, pesant 2 K.030 gr. reçoit dans une veinè, une émulsion en sèrum physiologique à 8,50/%, stérilisé, de 19 vésicules totales de Tityus serrulatus, et présence de légers phénomènes toxiques. L'autre, B, pesant 2 K.320 gr. meurt avec tous les phénomènes classiques de l'empoisonnement, par l'injection endoveineuse del'émulsion de 16 vésicules totales de venin de Tityus serrulatus! Les premières 19 vésicules pesaient 0,gr.58; les 16 derniéres-84 milligrammes. Les premières contenaient 0,gr.003. 634 et les secondes 0,gr.005.263 de venin pur! La moyenne obtenue de 6346 scorpions, (entre T. bahiensis et T. serrulatus) nous a fourni pour chacun: 0,gr.000,131,53 de venin pur, par piqûre. Si l'on spécifie: Pour 5.197 T. bahiensis. La moyenne pour une piqûre est 0,gr.000.106.15. Pour 1.149 T. serrulatus, la moyenne pour une piqûre est.......0,gr.000.246.30. La quantité a varié, selon les individus, de 0,gr.000.035.71, à 0,gr.000.436.01 de venin pur, pour une piqûre. D'après ce qui vient d'étre dit, on peut voir combien la quantité de venin éjaculé varie, chaque fois, chez les scorpions. L'unité-piqûre ne peut done pas ètre utiliseé pour des expériences dèlicates. Le mieux est de se servir de venin pur, et c'est ce que nous avons fait pour les expériences minutieuses. Quand on n'en possède pas, on peut établir pour chaque série des expériences à tenter-la dose minima mortelle en poids (grammes et fractions) de vésicules. D'après les bases ici consignées, et avec une trés petite erreur, on peut calculer la quantité de venin pur de cette dóse. Ce calcul est d'ailleurs dispensable. On peut s'en rapporter simplement au poids sec des vésicules totales et dire que la D. m. m. est de tant de milligr. secs. Comme le venin se conserve mal dans les vésicules, il faut, dans ce procédé, doser la D. m. m. toutes les fois que l'on veut procéder á une sériê d'expériences. Le venin desséché rappelle, d'après le temps de conservations au Laboratoire, celui de Crotatus terrificus et celui des Lachesis (quand il est vieux). Il est retenu au passage en partie, par les bougies Berkfeld et Chamberland. La conservation en état de dessication est la meilleure. Ainsi gardé, à l'abri de la lumierè, aux approches de 0,gr., pendant 8 mois, il perd à peine 1,2 à 1,4 de sa valeur primitive. L'echauffement à 100 gr. trouble une dissolution de venin dans l'eau distilleé; sans atteindre toutefois son pouvoir toxique, quand on l'injecte par la voie intra-cérébrale. Nous avons fait l'experience par 11 voies diverses. Sur des animaux sensibles, nous n'avons pas obtenu de phénomènes toxiques, apparemment, par les voies suivantes: 1) buccale; 2) gastrique; 3) rectale; 4) chambre oculaire antérieure; 5) cornéenne; 6) trachéenne; 7) meningée {sur; intra; 8) simple contact, bien que direct, avec le systemè nerveux central. Transmission of Chagas disease is realized through contamination of ocular conjunctiva, mucosa or skin with infected dejections eliminated by the insect vectors of Schizotrypanum cruzi (Triatoma infestans, Panstrongylus megistus and Rhodnius prolixus). The triatomid bugs live in holes and craks in the walls, in beds, behind trunks, etc. Found in primitive mud huts covered with thatched roofs, and so the human dwellers have many chances to contract the disease, reinfections being reasonably more to expect than a single inoculation. Experimental work reproducing those natural conditions is welcomed as some important features in the pathologic picture of the disease such as the extensive myocardial fibrosis seen in chronic cases are still incompletely known. Microscopic changes were studied in the heart muscle of seven Cebus monkeys infected by S. cruzi. This animal survives the acute stage of the disease and so is particularly suited to experiments of long duration in which several inoculations of S. cruzi are performed. Three different strains of S. cruzi isolated from acute cases of Chagas' disease were employed. One monkey was injected in the skin with infected blood and necropsied after 252 days. Two monkeys were three times, and one, eight times infected in skin, one of them with contaminated blood, and two with contaminated blood and dejections from infected bugs. The necropsies were performed after 35, 95 and 149 days. One monkey was three times inoculated through the intact ocular conjunctiva (one time with infected blood, two times with dejections from infected bugs), and one time through the wounded buccal mucosa, and necropsied after 134 days. Another monkey was six times inoculated, four times through the intact ocular conjunctiva (one time with contaminated blood, three times with dejections from infected bugs) and two times injected in the skin with infected blood, and necropsied after 157 days. Finally, another monkey was nine times inoculated, four times through the intact ocular conjunctiva (one time with infected blood, and three times with dejections from infected bugs), and five times injected in the skin (four times with contaminated blood, and one time with dejections from infected bugs), and necropsied after 233 days. The microscopic picture was uniform presenting, however, considerable individual variations, and was represented by diffuse interstitial myocarditis, frequently more (marked in the right ventricle base of the heart), accompanied by lymphatic stasis. The infiltration consists of macrophages, plasma cells and lymphocytes, the cellular reaction having sometimes a perivascular distribution, involving the auriculo-ventricular system of conduction, endocardium, epicardium and cardiac sympathetic gangliae. The loss of cardiac muscle fibers was always minimal. Leishmanial forms of S. cruzi in myocardial fibers are scanty and, in two cases, absent. Fatty necrosis in the epicardium was noted in two cases. Obliterative changes of medium-sized branches of coronary arteries (hypersensitivity reaction?) and multiple infarcts of the myocardium was found in one instance. The diffuse myocarditis induced by S. cruzi in several species of monkeys of the genus Cebus observed after 233 days (several inoculations) and 252 days (single inoculation) is not associated with disseminated fibrosis such as is reported in chronic cases of Chagas' disease. Definite capacity of reversion is another characteristic of the interstitial myocarditis observed in the series of Cebus monkeys here studied. The impression was gained that repeated inoculation with S. cruzi may influence the myocardial changes differently according to the period between the reinoculations. A short period after the first inoculation is followed by more marked changes, while long periods are accompanied by slight changes, which suggests an active immunisation produced by the first inoculation. More data are required, however before a definite statement is made on this subject considering that individual variations, the natural capacity of reversion of the interstitial myocarditis and the employement of more than a species of Cebus monkeys probably exerts influence also in the results here reported.

De 149 autópsias realizadas em peixes, os autores coletaram diversos helmintos, no litoral de Macaé, Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. A maior parte das espécies aqui estudadas, são redescritas, algumas apenas referidas e uma nova espécie do gênero Rhipidocotyle Diesing, 1858, é descrita nesta oportunidade.

Foram feitas observações do ciclo evolutivo do Triatoma vitticeps com alimentação semanal em camundongo, em condições de laboratório. De quatro casais virgens obtiveram-se 435 ovos, sendo que 149 destinaram-se ao ciclo evolutivo e 286 ao estudo da resistência ao jejum, o que constituirá a segunda etapa deste trabalho. Apenas 50 exemplares atingiram a fase adulta num período X (S) = 270 ± 45 dias. Quanto ao tempo de incubação, o 1° e o 2° estádios foram realizados, cada um, em menos de um mês, enquanto que os 3º, 4º e 5º estádios requereram cerca de um, dois e três meses, respectivamente. A procura pelo 1º repasto ocorreu de forma sensível no 3º, 6º e 10º dias. Em todos os estádios, mais de 50% dos exemplares realizaram apenas um repasto, com exceção do 5º, onde foram necessários dois. No que diz respeito ao intervalo de tempo entre o oferecimento do repasto, o ato de picar, e a duração do repasto, observou-se que estes aumentaram gradativamente de acordo com o estádio. Dos 423 repastos realizados, 390 não foram seguidos de defecação no prazo de 10 min. Sob este aspecto parece que o T. vitticeps não é um bom transmissor do T. cruzi. O experimento teve a duração de 13 meses e neste período as temperaturas máximas e mínimas e a umidade relativa do ar variaram em média de 28 ± 2°C a 25 ± 2°C e 80 ± 2%, respectivamente. O material é proveniente da criação mantida no Departamento de entomologia do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz.

To characterize antibody binding to a panel of V3 loop peptides representing diverse HIV-1 neutralization epitopes, 149 HIV-1 infected individuals from Rio de Janeiro (RJ) were investigated. Results were analyzed with respect to risk factors for infection and other epidemiological and clinical data. Peptide reactivity was not associated with sex, clinical status, CD4 counts, antigenemia or ß2-microglobulin serum level. A segregation of peptide reactivity according to route of infection was encountered. This finding suggests that more then one viral strain may be circulating in RJ, in subjects with different risk factors for HIV-1 infection. An investigation of prevalent HIV-1 genotypes, serotypes and immunotypes may be of importance for the design and selection of potential vaccines to be used in Brazil as well as for the selection of populations to be included in future vaccine efficacy trials.

From June 1984 to July 1992, 392 xenodiagnostic tests were applied on 264 patients with chronic Chagas disease from Brazilian endemic areas of Virgem da Lapa and Coronel Murta, situated in the Jequitinhonha Valley, in the State of Minas Gerais. The susceptibilities of Rhodnius neglectus, Panstrongylus megistus, Triatoma vitticeps and Triatoma infestans were compared. Most of the time 20 nymphs (fourth instar) of each species were applied to 161 women and 103 men aged between 5 and 83 years of age. The tests were prepared to compare the susceptibilities of two species at a time, using the same patients for each test. Results showed a xenopositiveness of 26.28% (103 tests) being 27.98% in women (68 positive in 243 applied tests) and 23.49% in men (35 positive in 149 applied tests). The relative frequency of xenopositiveness displayed a great superiority of P. megistus and T. vitticeps. In tests from type I, for example, P. megistus was the unique responsible for 10.73% of positive xenodiagnosis vs. only 0.98% in T. infestans. Other parameters analized in this work confirm this superiority, and corroborate that T. infestans can be replaced by P. megistus and /or T. vitticeps in order to upgrade the efficacy of xenodiagnosis

The occurrence of HTLV-I/II and HIV-1 coinfections have been shown to be frequent, probably in consequence of their similar modes of transmission. This paper presents the prevalence of coinfection of HTLV among HIV-1 infected and AIDS patients in Belém, State of Pará, Brazil. A group of 149 patients attending the AIDS Reference Unit of the State Department of Health was tested for the presence of antibodies to HTLV-I/II using an enzyme immunoassay and the positive reactions were confirmed with a Western blot that discriminates between HTLV-I and HTLV-II infections. Four patients (2.7%) were positive to HTLV-I, seven (4.7%) to HTLV-II and one (0.7%) showed an indeterminate pattern of reaction. The present results show for the first time in Belém not only the occurrence of HTLV-II/HIV-1 coinfections but also a higher prevalence of HTLV-II in relation to HTLV-I. Furthermore, it also enlarges the geographical limits of the endemic area for HTLV-II in the Amazon region of Brazil.

We analyzed, by env and gag heteroduplex mobility assay, 149 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) positive samples collected in Ceará during the year 2000. The prevalence of subtype B was 81.2% and the prevalence of subtype F and B/F recombinants were both 2.7%. Eight (5.4%) and 12 (8%) out of 149 samples showed indeterminate results in the env and gag analysis respectively. By FokI restriction fragment length polymorphism, 34% of the subtype B samples were identified as the typical Brazilian subtype B.In the present study, we identified HIV-1 subtype F and B/F in Ceará for the first time. Our results contribute to the understanding of HIV in Brazil, and may prove useful for the development of vaccine candidates.

Discriminant analysis was used to identify eggs of Capillaria spp. at specific level found in organic remains from an archaeological site in Patagonia, Argentina, dated of 6,540 ± 110 years before present. In order to distinguish eggshell morphology 149 eggs were measured and grouped into four arbitrary subsets. The analysis used on egg width and length discriminated them into different morphotypes (Wilks' lambda = 0.381, p < 0.05). The correlation analysis suggests that width was the most important variable to discriminate among the Capillaria spp. egg morphotypes (Pearson coefficient = 0.950, p < 0.05). The study of eggshell patterns, the relative frequency in the sample, and the morphometric data allowed us to correlate the four morphotypes with Capillaria species.

Until recently, Toxoplasma gondii was considered to be clonal with little genetic variability. In this paper we summarize recent genotyping data from chickens in Brazil, and pigs, lambs and white-tailed deer in the USA, to demonstrate the high genetic diversity and geographical distribution of T. gondii. A total of 149 T. gondii isolates from 13 geographical areas of Brazil and 182 T. gondii isolates from pigs, 53 isolates from sheep and 15 isolates from fetal white-tailed deer from USA were genotyped using the 10 RCFP-PCR genetic markers SAG1, SAG2, SAG3, BTUB, GRA6, c22-8, c29-2, L358, PK1 and Apico. Genotyping of 149 T. gondii isolates from free range chickens in Brazil identified 58 genotype groups. No clonal type II lineage was found. Of the 253 isolates from animals from USA, 18 genotypes were identified, predominantly type II. These studies indicate a higher genetic diversity than previously recognized.

The prevalence of occult hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection was investigated in 149 hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) negative injecting drug users (IDUs) in the Central-West Region of Brazil. Of these individuals, 19 were positive for HBV DNA, resulting in an occult HBV infection prevalence of 12.7% (19/149); six of these 19 individuals had anti-HBV core and/or anti-HBV surface antibodies and 13 were negative for HBV markers. All IDUs with occult hepatitis B reported sexual and/or parenteral risk behaviours. All HBV DNA-positive samples were successfully genotyped. Genotype D was the most common (17/19), followed by genotype A (2/19). These findings reveal a high prevalence of occult HBV infection and the predominance of genotype D among IDUs in Brazil's Central-West Region.

Neste estudo, pretende-se analisar as relações entre as empresas industriais do estado de São Paulo e seus stakeholders, tendo como base conceitual a Teoria dos Stakeholders. A pesquisa, descritiva e quantitativa, parte de três atributos - poder, legitimidade e urgência - que definem a relação ou influência entre cada stakeholder e a organização. O levantamento de dados foi conduzido por meio de uma pesquisa do tipo survey eletrônica, com o uso de um questionário enviado a associados do Centro das Indústrias do Estado de São Paulo. A amostragem adotada foi intencional e não probabilística, obtendo-se uma amostra com 149 respostas válidas. Apesar das restrições metodológicas, os resultados indicam que os stakeholders são vistos pelos respondentes de formas diversas, o que tornaria viável a diferenciação de tratamento e de priorização estratégica dos stakeholders por parte das organizações, com predomínio dos clientes e consumidores sobre os demais. Por meio de uma análise fatorial, agruparam-se as 11 classes de stakeholders analisadas em 3 categorias - relacionamento direto com o negócio, relacionamento indireto com o negócio e propriedade do negócio -, diferentes das classificações propostas em estudos anteriores.

Senso de coerência é o construto proposto por Antonovsky para avaliar a capacidade do indivíduo de lidar com o estresse. O presente estudo objetiva medir o senso de coerência e avaliar sua relação com variáveis sócio-demográficas e o uso de psicofármacos, em uma amostra de 127 indivíduos internados para realização de cirurgias cardíacas. O senso de coerência desses indivíduos obteve um valor médio de 149,6 (D.P.=24,6), variando de 98 a 191 (intervalo possível de 21 a 203), com valores maiores indicando maior senso de coerência. Participantes do sexo masculino, maiores de 60 anos, casados, e que não faziam uso de psicofármacos no pré-operatório de cirurgias cardíacas indicaram maior senso de coerência, apresentando diferenças estatisticamente significativas para as variáveis sexo e uso de psicofármacos. Os resultados sugerem que pacientes do sexo feminino e mais jovens precisam de maior atenção dos profissionais da enfermagem no planejamento do cuidado perioperatório.

O objetivo deste estudo transversal foi investigar o uso de álcool e níveis de espiritualidade entre estudantes de Enfermagem. Aplicou-se o Teste de Identificação do Uso do Álcool e a Escala de Espiritualidade. Participaram 191 (80,2%) estudantes do curso de Enfermagem de uma cidade do interior de Minas Gerais, sendo 75,4% do sexo feminino, idade média 25 anos, 149 (78%) de religião católica. Quanto ao uso de álcool por sexo, 117 (75%) mulheres faziam uso de bebida alcoólica e 33 (56,9%) bebiam em nível problemático (p?0,05), contra 25 homens (43,1%). Foi encontrada uma pontuação baixa dos níveis de espiritualidade na amostra: em média, mulheres apresentaram escore menor em comparação aos homens (12,7 vs 13,5). Na comparação entre níveis de espiritualidade e beber problemático, observou-se que estudantes com uso de baixo risco apresentaram menores níveis de espiritualidade. Concluiu-se que a espiritualidade pode não funcionar como fator protetor para uso do álcool, sugerindo que esse comportamento pode estar sob o controle de outras variáveis.

Objective: Identifying the main causes for underreporting of Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) by health professionals. Method: A systematic review carried out in the following databases: LILACS, PAHO, SciELO, EMBASE and PubMed in the period between 1992 and 2012. Descriptors were used in the search for articles, and the identified causes of underreporting were analyzed according to the classification of Inman. Results: In total, were identified 149 articles, among which 29 were selected. Most studies were carried out in hospitals (24/29) for physicians (22/29), and pharmacists (10/29). The main causes related to underreporting were ignorance (24/29), insecurity (24/29) and indifference (23/29). Conclusion: The data show the eighth sin in underreporting, which is the lack of training in pharmacovigilance. Therefore, continuing education can increase adherence of professionals to the service and improve knowledge and communication of risks due to drug use.
