The effect of different feeds in comparison with that of maize grains on the egg yolk color was observed. It was found that deep orange and yellow orange maize give satisfactory coloration to the yolk, respectively orange and yellow. The most intense color was observed when green feed was used in combination with deep orange maize. Green feeds as chicory, alfafa, cabbage, welsh onion and banana leaves and alfafa or chicory meal proved to be good in giving orange color to the yolk. Yellow yolk was obtained when Guinea grass or carica fruit were used in the ration. Carrot and beet without leaves did not give satisfactory color to the egg yolk. The observations with other feeds are being continued.

A test was conducted at Poultry Department of "Luiz de Queiroz" School of Agriculture to prove the effect of green feed on egg production. One hundred Rhode Island Red hens at plain laying period were divided in ten pens. The lot A was constituted of pens 1 to 5 and the lot B of pens 6 to 10. During 16 days the pens 1 to 5 did not receive green feed and the pens 6 to 10 received it with abundance. After and for a period of 30 days the situation was inverted. The analysis were made considering, a) the production of all chickens and b) discarding the chickens with irregular laying. In both cases the results were statistically insignificant, proving that green feed did not improve egg production.

Considering the economic importance of the sugar industry among ourselves, the authors carried out a field experiment (Latin square) with Co 290 sugar cane, on a white sandy soil of Piracicaba, State of São Paulo, Brazil, applying NaCl in increasing rates (from 6.8 to 54.5 grams per plant), in order to study the effects of chlorides, on productivity and on the composition of juice. No toxic or stimulating effect was found, and there was no change in yield, in degree of purity of the juice, in general aspect of plants or in colour of leaves and culms. No difference was observed between potassium sulphate or chloride, as source of potash for sugar cane culture. Data collected and the literature cited suggest: (a) that the use of the variety Co 290 is indicated for soils rich in chlorine, such as the saline soils of the North-east and Atlantic Coast of Brazil; (b) that it is necessary to extend studies in Research Institutes and Agricultural Experiment Stations of the country to verify the behaviour of other varieties of sugar cane in the types of soils mentioned, especially with respect their yielding capacity. The authors are already planning such investigations.

This paper deals with the variation of the ascorbic acid content in Natal orange as related to the type of rootstock and to the picking time. The determinations were carried out in the juice of fruits which had practically the same ratio total solids/acidity being selected only the highest values of such quotient. The results can be summaryzed as follows: 1. The rootstock has a significant influence on the vitamin C content of the scion; this influence shows two interesting aspects: first, the ascorbic acid contet itself varies as a function of the rootstock; among the three rootstocks studied the highest values were obtained on scion growing on Serra d'água orange; the lowest values were found in "limão rugoso" and "limão francês" was intermediate; the second point to be emphasyzed is the manner of variation of the ascorbic acid content in the different rootstocks: in the case of Serra d'água. the content decreases slowly whereas in "limão francês" the level remains nearly constant and suddenly falls down; finally in the case of "limão rugoso" the amount of ascorbic acid increases significantly to return to the primitive level. 2. The amount of ascorbic acid, not considering the rootstock influence, varies strongly as a function of harvesting time; for this reason the present factor must be borne in mind when sampling for the determination of ascorbic acid in orange is concerned.

A aradura é a principal das operações agrícolas para o desenvolvimento das diversas culturas. A sua importância é conhecida desde as mais remotas eras. Assim, os romanos já tinham sua teoria sobre aradura. Desta forma o arado, a mais antiga das máquinas agrícolas, foi sempre motivo de atenção dos agricultores, fabricantes e técnicos em mecânica agrícola. A sua evolução foi bastante grande. O estudo do arado sob o ponto de vista agrícola e econômico, para exata aplicação da máquina, nas diversas condições de solo, é de máximo interêsse para a mecânica agrícola. Assim sendo, para orientar a correta aplicação do arado, o que constitui a presente tese, foi experimentado num solo arenoso, de características mecânicas (areia total 75,7%, argila 13,5 e lôdo 10,8%) a diversas profundidades de aração, (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30cm), plantando nos mesmos, milho para verificar o efeito na produção. Num terceiro ano de experiência, foi realizada uma experiência a mais, isto é, uma subsolagem a 40 cm. Foi plantado milho nos canteiros assim trabalhados, e que eram repetidos em número de 4, porque o milho é uma cultura muito frequente e de fácil contrôle. As experiências com as diversas profundidades, demostraram que nestas condições de solo, à medida que aumenta a profundidade, aumenta também a produção. Do exposto, conclui-se pela experimentação que para esse solo é aconselhável: fazer o arado trabalhar a maior profundidade em que comumente é empregado até o limite de 25 cm, que foi o valor máximo examinado.

The aim of this paper is the study of moon effects on ten different crops divided in four groups: 1) salad and cole crops (lettuce, endive, cabbage, cauliflower); 2) root crops (beet, carrot, radish, turnip); 3) bulb crops (onion); 4) solanaceous fruits (eggplant). The design of the experiment was randomized blocks, with four replications, the different treatments being the four phases of the moon. The analyses of variance are given in the work of Simão (1953) and the analises of the mean in tables 1 to 2. The main conclusions are: 1) No difference in production were found related to different moon phases, even it the crops supposed to be sensible to moon effects. 2) In a few cases, where some increase in production was observed, such increase could be atributed by other apents 3) The agents supposed to interfere with increase in production were temperature and photoperiodism, rather than moon phases. 4) The most sensible crops to low temperature, during the night, were: lettuce, endive, cauliflower, cabbage, carrots, turnips and radish. 5) The most sensible crops to both low temperature and photoperiodism were: onion and beet. 6) The moon phases supposed to have opposed effects, namely full-moon and half-moon, gave mixed results sometimes both giving the best yield simultaneously and sometimes giving the poorest crops. 7) As a final conclusion, no moon effects could be detectable in the present experiment.

Among some strains of Actinomycetes isolated from Latosol red-yelow soil during the four seasons of the year only few strains had the capacity to reduce nitrate to nitrite. The stronger activity was shown by t !he strains isolated in springtime and at a pH of 5,5.

Some strains of Actinomycetes showed variation in its activity to reduce nitrate to nitrite when the nutrient solution was modified in relation to the major elements. One of these strains incapable of !this reaction showed a strong activity in nutrient solution without K and little activity without P. Otherwise strains capable of reducing nitrate to nitrite had this capacity decreased in absence of each one of the following elements: K, P, Mg, e S. K showed to be the most important of them, followed by P, Mg e S. Without any of these elements the pH of the nutrient solution has to be increased from 5,5 to 6,5 for the strains capable to reduce nitrate to nitrite preserve its capacity. The time for the reaction is increased from 5 to 8 days and the amount of nitrite obtained is small.

O presente trabalho é parte de um estudo da influência da cobertura morta sôbre algumas propriedades físicas e químicas de um latosolo vermelho amarelo plantado com café. Nele os autores relatam apenas os resultados obtidos sôbre a conservação da umidade do solo, concluindo que a cobertura morta mostrou-se eficiente nesse particular. O seu efeito foi mais pronunciado nos períodos mais sêcos e principalmente na camada superficial.

During 1952 and 1953 the author observed that radish, Raphanus sativus, L, developed rapidily in the warmer and damper period of the year and endured the lower temperatures. The yiel of leaves counted from 20 to 40% of the plant weigth.

I. This paper deals with an experiment carried out to evaluate the effect of the sugar cane upper end on the composition of the sugar cane harvest as a raw material for the sugar industry. The variety studied was Co 421. The authors intend to study other varieties in the future. The data were collected from plant cane, at intervals of two weeks, always from the same field, from a small central area of 3.000 square meters approximately. Sixty (60) stalks were cut in each occasion, randomly chosen from the whole area. They were afterwards separated into three groups of 20 stalks, one for each of the treatments, namely: a) Complete stalks, with no leaves or sheaths. b) Stalks harvested by the technique of REYNOSO, that is, as usually done in practice. c) Stalks with the tops completely cut out, that is, cut by technique of REYNOSO and then with 3 other top internodes eliminated. The treatments caused significant differences on the following technological characteristics: a) Weight b) Cane pol c) Available sucrose (pol) per cent cane d) Cane juice pol e) Saline coefficient of juice. II. Except for weight, all changes were favorable to treatment c, even if with differences relatively slight, in percentage. IIII. Treatment differences for cane fiber, brix, reducing sugars, juice ashes, coefficient of purity and glucose coefficient were not significant. IV. Time of harvest was an important factor affecting the composition of the cane and of the juice. V. On the average the available sucrose of cane for treatments, with an standard error of 0.13%, was: Treatment c 13.05% Treatment b 12.65% Treatment a 12.53% This shows that there is no sound basis for the heavy fines applied by some sugar mills to planters who do not cut low enough the tops of the cane stalks.

I. The variety studied was CB 41-76. The data were collected from plant cane at intervals of a two weeks, always from the same field, from a small central area of 3.000 square meters approximately, 60 stalks were cut in each occasion, randomly chosen from the whole area. They were afterwards separated into three groups of 20 stalks one for each of the treatments, namely: a) Complete stalk, with no leaves or sheaths. b) Stalks harvested by the technique of REYNOSO, that is, as usually done in practice. c) Stalks with the tops completely cut out, that is, cut by the techinique of REYNOSO and then with 3 other top internodes eliminated. The treatments caused significant differences on the weight of cane and coefficient of purity of juice, but the percentual differences between the average treatments a and c is 13% and 2%, respectively. II. Treatment differences for cane pol, cane fibre, brix, juice pol, reducing sugars, juice ashes, glucose coefficient, saline coefficient and available sucrose (pol) per cent were not significant. III. Time of harvest was an important factor affecting the composition of the cane and the juice. This paper shows that there is no sound basis for the heavy fines applied some sugar mills to planters who do not cut low enough the tops of the cane stalks.

A finalidade do trabalho, foi obter dados para o melhor conhecimento dos fatôres físicos do solo, que influenciam a incidência de murcha do algodoeiro, causada por Fusarium oxysporum f. vasinfectum (Atk.) Snyder & Hansen. Foi estudada a influência do tamanho das partículas de areia e porcentagem da mesma no solo. O primeiro ensaio mostrou que, a porcentagem de areia tinha um efeito sôbre a incidência de murcha na variedade IAC - 12. A maior incidência de murcha, foi notada nos tratamentos que possuiam maior porcentagem de areia. No segundo ensaio, foi notado o efeito do tamanho das partículas de areia sôbre a incidência de murcha na variedade IAC - 12. A incidência foi mais intensa nos substratos com Areias Fina e Média. O terceiro ensaio mostrou que a resistência da variedade RM4, ao Fusarium, aparentemente não foi afetada pela porcentagem de areia ou pelo tamanho das partículas.
