Using firm-level data from nine developing countries, we demonstrate that certain institutions, like restrictive labour market regulations, that are considered bad for economic growth might be beneficial for production efficiency, whereas good business environment, which is considered beneficial for economic growth, might have an adverse impact on production efficiency. We argue that our results suggest that there might be significant difference in the macro- and micro-impacts of institutional quality, such that the classification of institutions into 'good' and 'bad might be premature. © The Author 2013. Access to external sources of technical knowledge is one of the keys to staying innovative for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The literature suggests that SMEs with a weak internal R&D capacity do not make much use of institutional sources like research institutes and universities. In this paper I investigate how trade associations can induce member SMEs to use a research institute. The case of a public research institute and SMEs in the textile industry in Kyoto, Japan is examined. Evidence from the case suggests that trade associations facilitate the use of the institute by expressing a collective `voice' to the management of the institute. The effect is evident among active members in the use of services involving a large information gap as to their benefits. I also consider a shortcoming of the collective approach and suggest some measures to be taken on the part of research institutes.

Transglutaminases catalyse a diverse range of reactions leading to the modification of proteins and peptides such that their physical, chemical and biological properties become changed. They are found in many different living organisms and as a consequence display subtle differences in their biochemical and physical properties. it is therefore not surprising that this group of enzymes have been exploited as applied biocatalysts in a wide range of commercial sectors varying from the textile industry to the highly lucrative cosmetic industry. in addition the pathophysiological importance of this group of enzymes has increased significantly over the last decade with their involvement noted in a number of human diseases. As a consequence their identification as therapeutic targets or as monitoring aids for a range of different diseases has caused significant interest from the diagnostics and pharmaceutical industries. This review describes some of the current applications of transglutaminases; together with their potential strategic importance and future uses.
