We demonstrated a high fundamental repetition-rate pulsed erbium-doped fiber laser with all-fiber-integrated configuration. A novel scheme using a 45°-tilted fiber grating as the in-fiber polarizing element was employed to shorten the total cavity length and, thus, increase the fundamental repetition rate of the laser. Dissipative soliton pulses mode-locked with a fundamental repetition rate of 251.3 MHz and pulse duration of 96.7 fs have been achieved from the compact and all-fiber ring cavity laser. Additionally, passively Q-switched pulses were observed from this high fundamental repetition-rate fiber laser, which is the first report on Q-switched fiber laser using a tilted fiber grating.

Femtosecond-pulsed laser writing of waveguides, a few mm long, is demonstrated; waveguides were written orthogonally to the writing beam inside the bulk of ErIII-doped oxyfluoride glasses at a depth of 160 mum. The writing beam was 795 nm wavelength, 54 fs pulse duration and 11 MHz repetition rate. Tracks were written at pulse energies of 13.1 nJ to 26.1 nJ and sample translational velocity of 10 mmmiddot.s-1 to 28 mmmiddots-1. The influence of translational velocity and pulse energy on the cross-sectional shape and integrity of the written tracks is reported. Tracks tend to be narrower as the pulse energy is lowered or translational velocity decreased. Above 22.9 nJ, pulse energy, tracks tend to crack. The estimated refractive index profile of one track has a maximum increase of refractive index of 0.003 at the centre. These glasses normally form nano-glass-ceramics on heat treatment just above the glass transformation temperature (Tg). Here, a post-fs-writing heat-treatment just above Tg causes nano-ceramming of the glass sample and removes a light-guiding peripheral region of the fs-written tracks suggesting that this region may have been fs-modified by stress alone. Waveguiding at 651 nm and 973 nm wavelengths, and upconversion, are demonstrated in optimally written tracks.

Interface effects on ion-irradiation tolerance properties are investigated in nanolayered TiN/AlN films with individual layer thickness varied from 5 nm to 50 nm, prepared by pulsed laser deposition. Evolution of the microstructure and hardness of the multilayer films are examined on the specimens before and after He ion-implantation to a fluence of 4 × 10 m at 50 keV. The suppression of amorphization in AlN layers and the reduction of radiation-induced softening are observed in all nanolayer films. A clear size-dependent radiation tolerance characteristic is observed in the nanolayer films, i.e., the samples with the optimum layer thickness from 10 nm to 20 nm show the best ion irradiation tolerance properties, and a critical layer thickness of more than 5 nm is necessary to prevent severe intermixing. This study suggests that both the interface characteristics and the critical length scale (layer thickness) contribute to the reduction of the radiation-induced damages in nitride-based ceramic materials. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Nitride materials and coatings have attracted extensive research interests for various applications in advanced nuclear reactors due to their unique combination of physical properties, including high temperature stability, excellent corrosion resistance, superior mechanical property and good thermal conductivity. In this paper, the ion irradiation effects in nanocrystalline TiN coatings as a function of grain size are reported. TiN thin films (thickness of 100 nm) with various grain sizes (8-100 nm) were prepared on Si substrates by a pulsed laser deposition technique. All the samples were irradiated with He ions to high fluences at room temperature. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution TEM on the ion-irradiated samples show that damage accumulation in the TiN films reduces as the grain size reduces. Electrical resistivity of the ion-irradiated films increases slightly compared with the as-deposited ones. These observations demonstrate a good radiation-tolerance property of nanocrystalline TiN films. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Modern high-power, pulsed lasers are driven by strong intracavity fluctuations. Critical in driving the intracavity dynamics is the nontrivial phase profiles generated and their periodic modification from either nonlinear mode-coupling, spectral filtering or dispersion management. Understanding the theoretical origins of the intracavity fluctuations helps guide the design, optimization and construction of efficient, high-power and high-energy pulsed laser cavities. Three specific mode-locking component are presented for enhancing laser energy: waveguide arrays, spectral filtering and dispersion management. Each component drives a strong intracavity dynamics that is captured through various modeling and analytic techniques.

This thesis presents a detailed, experiment-based study of generation of ultrashort optical pulses from diode lasers. Simple and cost-effective techniques were used to generate high power, high quality optical short pulses at various wavelength windows. The major achievements presented in the thesis is summarised as follows. High power pulses generation is one of the major topics discussed in the thesis. Although gain switching is the simplest way for ultrashort pulse generation, it proves to be quite effective to deliver high energy pulses on condition that the pumping pulses with extremely fast rising time and high enough amplitude are applied on specially designed pulse generators. In the experiment on a grating-coupled surface emitting laser (GCSEL), peak power as high as 1W was achieved even when its spectral bandwidth was controlled within 0.2nm. Another experiment shows violet picosecond pulses with peak power as high as 7W was achieved when the intensive electrical pulses were applied on optimised DC bias to pump on InGaN violet diode laser. The physical mechanism of this phenomenon, as we considered, may attributed to the self-organised quantum dots structure in the laser. Control of pulse quality, including spectral quality and temporal profile, is an important issue for high power pulse generation. The ways to control pulse quality described in the thesis are also based on simple and effective techniques. For instance, GCSEL used in our experiment has a specially designed air-grating structure for out-coupling of optical signals; hence, a tiny flat aluminium mirror was placed closed to the grating section and resulted in a wavelength tuning range over 100nm and the best side band suppression ratio of 40dB. Self-seeding, as an effective technique for spectral control of pulsed lasers, was demonstrated for the first time in a violet diode laser. In addition, control of temporal profile of the pulse is demonstrated in an overdriven DFB laser. Wavelength tuneable fibre Bragg gratings were used to tailor the huge energy tail of the high power pulse. The whole system was compact and robust. The ultimate purpose of our study is to design a new family of compact ultrafast diode lasers. Some practical ideas of laser design based on gain-switched and Q-switched devices are also provided in the end.

We propose the design of a novel ?-shaped fiber laser resonator and apply it to build a long-cavity normaldispersion mode-locked Er-fiber laser which features enhanced functionalities for management and optimization of pulsed lasing regimes. We report the generation of sub-nanosecond pulses with the energy of ~0.5 µJ at a kilohertz-scale repetition rate in an all-fiber system based on the new laser design. A combination of special design solutions in the laser, such as polarization instability compensation in the ultra-long arm of the resonator, intra-cavity spectral selection of radiation with a broadband fiber Bragg grating, and polarization selection by means of a tilted refractive index grating, ensures low amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise and high stability of the laser system output parameters.

Self-seeded, gain-switched operation of an InGaN multi-quantum-well laser diode has been demonstrated for the first time. An external cavity comprising Littrow geometry was implemented for spectral control of pulsed operation. The feedback was optimized by adjusting the external cavity length and the driving frequency of the laser. The generated pulses had a peak power in excess of 400mW, a pulse duration of 60ps, a spectral linewidth of 0.14nm and maximum side band suppression ratio of 20dB. It was tunable within the range of 3.6nm centered at a wavelength of 403nm.
