Efficiency in the mutual fund (MF), is one of the issues that has attracted many investors in countries with advanced financial market for many years. Due to the need for frequent study of MF's efficiency in short-term periods, investors need a method that not only has high accuracy, but also high speed. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is proven to be one of the most widely used methods in the measurement of the efficiency and productivity of decision making units (DMUs). DEA for a large dataset with many inputs/outputs would require huge computer resources in terms of memory and CPU time. This paper uses neural network back-ropagation DEA in measurement of mutual funds efficiency and shows the requirements, in the proposed method, for computer memory and CPU time are far less than that needed by conventional DEA methods and can therefore be a useful tool in measuring the efficiency of a large set of MFs. The optical regeneration is an attractive method to improve the performance of long-distance data transmission, though its application in high-speed fiber systems requires careful design consideration/optimization. In this letter we investigate 40 Gbit/s dispersion-managed fiber transmission with optical 2R regeneration based on quantum well saturable absorber and highly non-linear fiber. We demonstrate through numerical modeling a feasibility of a single channel transmission over 10,000 km using optimized system design. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We study a periodic Raman amplified dispersion-managed system with backward-pumping configuration, considering noise and nonlinear impairments. A general optimization method based on nonlinearity management is applied in order to find the configuration that maximizes the system performance. The system is later tested using a full numerical implementation of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and shown to effectively deliver its longest propagation distance in the same optimal region.

A theory of an optimal distribution of the gain of in-line amplifiers in dispersion-managed transmission systems is developed. As an example of the application of the general method, a design of the line with periodically imbalanced in-line amplification is proposed.

We review the main physical and mathematical properties of dispersion-managed (DM) optical solitons. Theory of DM solitons can be presented at two levels of accuracy: first, simple, but nevertheless, quantitative models based on ordinary differential equations governing evolution of the soliton width and phase parameter (the so-called chirp); and second, a comprehensive path-average theory that is capable of describing in detail both the fine structure of DM soliton form and its evolution along the fiber line. An analogy between DM soliton and a macroscopic nonlinear quantum oscillator model is also discussed. © 2003 Académie des sciences/Éditions scientifiques et médicales Elsevier SAS. Error free unregenerated transmission is demonstrated looped-back over 5,745 km (62 spans) of installed SSMF along the Adelaide-Perth leg of the IP1 Australia network, which is now the world's longest commercially deployed unregenerated 10 Gbit/s DWDM terrestrial transmission system. © 2000 Optical Society of America.

Numerical optimisation of a 40 Gbit/s dispersion-managed soliton transmission system with in-line synchronous intensity modulation is performed. Using a time-saving numerical approach, superiority of the modified synchronous modulation over conventional synchronous modulation is demonstrated and an optimal operational regime is found.

Numerical optimization is performed of the 40-Gb/s dispersion-managed (DM) soliton transmission system with in-line synchronous intensity modulation. Stability of DM soliton transmission results from a combined action of dispersion, nonlinearity, in-line filtering, and modulation through effective periodic bandwidth management of carrier pulses. Therefore, analysis of the multiparametric problem is typically required. A two-stage time-saving numerical optimization procedure is applied. At the first step, the regions of the stable carrier propagation are determined using theoretical models available for DM solitons, and system parameters are optimized. At the second stage, full numerical simulations are undertaken in order to verify the tolerance of optimal transmission regimes. An approach developed demonstrates feasibility of error-free transmission over 20 000 km in a transmission line composed of standard fiber and dispersion compensation fiber at 40 Gb/s.

We present various approaches to the optimization of optical fiber lines and discuss the ranges of validity of such methods. An effective scheme for upgrading of existing transmission lines using dispersion-management with optimization of the pre- and postcompensating fiber is examined. The theory and numerical methods are illustrated in application to the Upgrade of a specific installed Deutsche Telekom fiber line.

Vendor-managed inventory (VMI) is a widely used collaborative inventory management policy in which manufacturers manages the inventory of retailers and takes responsibility for making decisions related to the timing and extent of inventory replenishment. VMI partnerships help organisations to reduce demand variability, inventory holding and distribution costs. This study provides empirical evidence that significant economic benefits can be achieved with the use of a genetic algorithm (GA)-based decision support system (DSS) in a VMI supply chain. A two-stage serial supply chain in which retailers and their supplier are operating VMI in an uncertain demand environment is studied. Performance was measured in terms of cost, profit, stockouts and service levels. The results generated from GA-based model were compared to traditional alternatives. The study found that the GA-based approach outperformed traditional methods and its use can be economically justified in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Mid-Sized Businesses (MSBs) are defined by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) as having a sales turnover of between £25 million and £500 million. A key gap in family firm/business research and literature to date is, understanding the role and importance of non-financial objectives (such as family harmony, tradition and business longevity), and the role the family plays in creating a wide set of business performance objectives (both financial and non-financial) in these businesses. This dissertation contributes to filling this knowledge gap by drawing on Family Systems Theory applied in a business context, and within an overarching Resource Based View (RBV) of the firm.

For the first time, we demonstrate the possibility to switch between three distinct pulse regimes in a dissipative dispersion-managed (DM) fibre laser by solely controlling the gain saturation energy. Nonlinear Schrödinger equation based simulations show the transitions between hyper-Gaussian similaritons, parabolic similaritons, and dissipative solitons in the same laser cavity. It is also shown that such transitions exist in a wide dispersion range from all-normal to slightly net-normal dispersion. This work demonstrates that besides dispersion and filter managements gain saturation energy can be a new degree of freedom to manage pulse regimes in DM fibre lasers, which offers flexibility in designing ultrafast fibre lasers. Also, the result indicates that in contrast to conservative soliton lasers whose intensity profiles are unique, dissipative DM lasers show diversity in pulse shapes. The findings not only give a better understanding of pulse shaping mechanisms in mode-locked lasers, but also provide insight into dissipative systems.
