Fiber optical parametric amplifier in high-speed WDM networks

We report high-capacity (> 1 Tb/s) amplification by a fiber optical parametric amplifier in different roles displaying compatibility and versatility in future WDM networks with phase-shift keying modulation format.

Tilted fibre Bragg grating based 800nm WDM interrogation system for strain, temperature and refractive index sensing

We report the implementation of a low-cost high-resolution WDM interrogation system operating around 800nm region with bandwidth up to 60 nm and resolution of 13 pm by utilising a tilted fibre Bragg grating as an out-coupling device and a CCD-array detector. The system has been evaluated for interrogating fibre Bragg grating based strain, temperature sensors, giving sensitivities of 0.6 pm/µe and 5.6 pm/°C which are in good agreement with previously reported values. Furthermore, the system has been utilised to detect refractive index change of sample liquids, demonstrating a capability of measuring index change as small as 10-5.

Bit-error rate performance of 20 Gbit/s WDM RZ-DPSK non-slope matched submarine transmission systems

Applying direct error counting, we assess the performance of 20 Gbit/s wavelength-division multiplexing return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (RZ-DPSK) transmission at 0.4 bit/(s Hz) spectral efficiency for application on installed non-zero dispersion-shifted fibre based transoceanic submarine systems. The impact of the pulse duty cycle on the system performance is investigated and the reliability of the existing theoretical approaches to the BER estimation for the RZ-DPSK format is discussed.

WDM signal regeneration using a single all-optical device

Using the principle of quasi-continuous filtering in a non-linear fibre, we propose an optical device for the simultaneous regeneration of sevaral channels at 40 Gbit/s. Simulations predict an improvement of the signal quality for four channels by more than 6.8 dB.

Asynchronous digital optical regenerator for 4 x 40 Gbit/s WDM to 160 Gbit/s OTDM conversion

We propose and numerically analyse an asynchronous digital optical regenerator using a single-EAM loop and a novel neighbor-combine approach. It effectively re-synchronizes input signals with arbitrary phases to the local clock, and regenerates signals with high amplitude fluctuation and polarization mode dispersion. We demonstrate the application of this regenerator for 4 x 40 Gbit/s WDM to 160 Gbit/s OTDM conversion.

2R and 3R optical regeneration in 40 Gbit/s WDM terrestrial networks

We analyse a 2R regenerator using nonlinear-optical-loop-mirror and a 3R regenerator employing nonlinearly-enhanced amplitude modulator in 40Gbit/s WDM networks based on standard fibre (SMF). Characterization of one- (600km of SMF) and two-step regeneration is presented.

Efficient optimisation of per-channel pre-compensation in WDM 20-Gbit/s RZ-DPSK transmission in non-slope matched submarine links

We propose a computationally efficient method to the per-channel dispersion optimisation applied to 50 GHz-spaced N × 20-Gbit/s wavelength division multiplexing return-to-zero differential phase shift keying transmission in non-zero dispersion-shifted fibre based submarine systems. Cost-effective upgrade of WDM all-optical networks using overlay fibres and hop reduction links

Fibre overlay is a cost-effective technique to alleviate wavelength blocking in some links of a wavelength-routed optical network by increasing the number of wavelengths in those links. In this letter, we investigate the effects of overlaying fibre in an all-optical network (AON) based on GÉANT2 topology. The constraint-based routing and wavelength assignment (CB-RWA) algorithm locates where cost-efficient upgrades should be implemented. Through numerical examples, we demonstrate that the network capacity improves by 25 per cent by overlaying fibre on 10 per cent of the links, and by 12 per cent by providing hop reduction links comprising 2 per cent of the links. For the upgraded network, we also show the impact of dynamic traffic allocation on the blocking probability. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

All-optical TDM to WDM signal conversion and partial regeneration using XPM with triangular pulses

We propose a new all-optical, all-fibre scheme for conversion of time-division multiplexed to wavelength-division multiplexed signals using cross-phase modulation with triangular pulses. Partial signal regeneration using this technique is also demonstrated.

WDM transmission at 2μm over low-loss hollow core photonic bandgap fiber

World's first demonstration of WDM transmission in a HC-PBGF at the predicted low loss region of 2m is presented. A total capacity of 16 Gbit/s is achieved using 1×8.5 Gbit/s and 3×2.5 Gbit/s channels modulated using NRZ OOK over 290 meters of hollow core fiber. © 2013 OSA.
