In this Initial Report of the Deep Sea Drilling Project, detailed studies of Sites 533 (gas hydrates) on the Blake Outer Ridge and 534 (oldest ocean history) in the Blake-Bahama Basin have provided answers to many geological and geophysical questions posed over the decade that deep drilling has been undertaken in this part of the western North Atlantic. The history of drilling and a historical review of key scientific accomplishments have been presented in the Introduction (Gradstein and Sheridan, this volume). In this final chapter we review highlights of new geological, geophysical and paleoceanographic interpretations presented in this volume, and offer a critical review of this information. We conclude with a listing of some outstanding problems and recommendations for future research, including data collection.

In the monograph metalliferous sediments of the East Pacific Rise near 21°S are under consideration. Distribution trends of chemical, mineral and grain size compositions of metalliferous sediments accumulated near the axis of this ultrafast spreading segment of the EPR are shown. On the basis of lithological and geochemical investigations spatial and temporal variations of hydrothermal activity are estimated. Migration rates of hydrothermal fields along the spreading axis are calculated. The model of cyclic hydrothermal process is suggested as a result of tectono-magmatic development of the spreding centre.

Phosphorus content in the surface layer of bottom sediments varies from 0.07% to 0.73%. Clayey radiolarian and radiolarian clayey oozes contain 0.12% P, miopelagic clays 0.21% P, and sediments with high iron and manganese concentrations 0.46% P (average contents). Phosphorus content of iron-manganese nodules varies from 0.14% to 0.39%, average 0.19%. Correlation between phosphorus contents in nodules and surrounding sediments is indicated indirectly by P/Fe ratio. Phosphorus is non-uniformly distributed in some nodules and sometimes correlates with iron. Accumulation of phosphorus in iron-manganese nodules is governed by a degree of manganese predominance in ore components.

Results of studies in two biogeochemically active zones of the Atlantic Ocean (the Benguela upwelling waters and the region influenced by the Congo River run-off) are reported in the book. A multidisciplinary approach included studies of the major elements of the ocean ecosystem: sea water, plankton, suspended matter, bottom sediments, interstitial waters, aerosols, as well as a wide complex of oceanographic studies carried out under a common program. Such an approach, as well as a use of new methodical solutions led to obtaining principally new information on different aspects of oceanology.

Results of petrographic studies of ultrabasites and gabbro from rift zones of the Indian Ocean are discussed using materials of Cruise 36 of R/V Vityaz. Rocks sampled from two sites 2700 km apart are close to each other in their composition. Petrographically ultrabasic rocks are divided into four subgroups: I - dunite; II - harzburgite, serpentinite; III - plagioclase lherzolite; and IV - metamorphically altered rocks. Petrographic description and chemical composition of basic rock varieties are presented as well as description of rock-forming minerals and their optical properties. Formation of pyroxene and plagioclase is shown to be related to autometasomatosis. Formation of ultrabasite in rift zones is related to complicated processes.

Formation of ultrabasite in the rift zones is related to complicated processes.

The book deals with results of complex geological and geophysical studies in the Doldrums and Arkhangelsky Fracture Zones of the Central Atlantic. Description of the main features of bottom relief, sediments and crustal structure, geomagnetic field, composition of igneous and sedimentary rocks are given in the book. The authors made conclusions on tectonic delamination of the oceanic crust and existence of specific rock complexes forming non-spreading blocks

The monograph summarizes materials on geology and deep structure of the Central Atlantic fracture zones. These materials have been obtained during eight expeditions of R/V ''Akademik Nikolaj Strakhov''. The studies have been based on the integrated geological approach. As a result, many new tectonic, magmatic, metallogenic and historical-geological features of these phenomenal structures of the deep ocean have been revealed.
