According to life-history theory, individuals optimize their decisions in order to maximize their fitness. This raises a conflict between parents, which need to cooperate to ensure the propagation of their genes but at the same time need to minimize the associated costs. Trading-off between benefits and costs of a reproduction is one of the major forces driving demographic trends and has shaped several different parental care strategies. Using little penguins (Eudyptula minor) as a model, we investigated whether individuals of a pair provide equal parental effort when raising offspring and whether their behavior was consistent over 8 years of contrasting resource availability. Using an automated identification system, we found that 72% of little penguin pairs exhibited unforced (i.e., that did not result from desertion of 1 parent) unequal partnership through the postguard stage. This proportion was lower in favorable years. Although being an equal pair appeared to be a better strategy, it was nonetheless the least often observed. Individuals that contributed less than their partner were not less experienced (measured by age), and gender did not explain differences between partners. Furthermore, birds that contributed little or that contributed a lot tended to be consistent in their level of contribution across years. We suggest that unequal effort during breeding may reflect differences in individual quality, and we encourage future studies on parental care to consider this consistent low and high contributor behavior when investigating differences in pair investment into its offspring. Key words: attendance patterns, individual quality, meal size, parental care, reproductive costs, seabirds.

Two silicate-rich dust layers were found in the Dome Fuji ice core in East Antarctica, at Marine Isotope Stages 12 and 13. Morphologies, textures, and chemical compositions of constituent particles reveal that they are high-temperature melting products and are of extraterrestrial origin. Because similar layers were found ~2000 km east of Dome Fuji, at EPICA (European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica)-Dome C, particles must have rained down over a wide area 434 and 481 ka. The strewn fields occurred over an area of at least 3 × 10**6 km**2. Chemical compositions of constituent phases and oxygen isotopic composition of olivines suggest that the upper dust layer was produced by a high-temperature interaction between silicate-rich melt and water vapor due to an impact explosion or an aerial burst of a chondritic meteoroid on the inland East Antarctic ice sheet. An estimated total mass of the impactor, on the basis of particle flux and distribution area, is at least 3 × 10**9 kg. A possible parent material of the lower dust layer is a fragment of friable primitive asteroid or comet. A hypervelocity impact of asteroidal/cometary material on the upper atmosphere and an explosion might have produced aggregates of sub-µm to µm-sized spherules. Total mass of the parent material of the lower layer must exceed 1 × 10**9 kg. The two extraterrestrial horizons, each a few millimeters in thickness, represent regional or global meteoritic events not identified previously in the Southern Hemisphere.

Experimental phase relations were used to assess the role of volatiles and crustal level fractional crystallization in the petrogenesis of lavas from Hole 839B in the central Lau Basin. Melting experiments were performed on Sample 135-839B-15R-2, 63-67 cm, at 1 atm, anhydrous, and 2 kbar, H2O-saturated (~6 wt% H2O in the melt) to determine the influence of variable pressure and H2O content on phase appearances, mineral chemistry, and liquid line of descent followed during crystallization. The effects of H2O are to depress the liquidus by ~100°C, and to suppress crystallization of plagioclase and orthopyroxene relative to olivine and high-Ca clinopyroxene. At 1 atm, anhydrous, olivine and plagioclase coexist near the liquidus, whereas orthopyroxene and then clinopyroxene appear with decreasing temperature. Crystallization of 50 wt% produces a residual liquid that is rich in FeO* (10.8 wt%) and poor in Al2O3 (13.6 wt%). At 2 kbar, H2O-saturated, the liquidus phases are olivine and chromian spinel, with high-Ca clinopyroxene appearing after ~10% crystallization. Plagioclase saturation is suppressed until ~20% crystallization has occurred. The residual liquid from 35 wt% crystallization is rich in AI2O3 (17.4 wt%), and poor in MgO (4.82 wt%); it contains moderate FeO* (8.2 wt%), and resembles the low-MgO andesites recovered from Hole 839B. On the basis of these experiments we conclude that the primitive lavas recovered from Hole 839B have experienced crystallization along the Ol + Cpx saturation boundary, under hydrous conditions (an ankaramitic liquid line of descent), and variable amounts of olivine and chromian spinel accumulation. The low-MgO andesites from Hole 839B are the products of hydrous fractional crystallization, at crustal pressures, of a parent magma similar to basaltic andesite Sample 135-839B-15R-2, 63-67 cm.

A number of intensely altered, dark xenoliths with palimpsest quench textures were recorded within altered dacitic host rocks at Site 1189 (Roman Ruins, PACMANUS) during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 193. Several of these displayed puzzling marginal fringes, apparently of altered plagioclase with variolitic texture, protruding into adjacent host rocks. Despite their alteration, the xenoliths were interpreted as fragments of rapidly chilled, possibly olivine-bearing basalts incorporated into the dacitic magmas either within the crustal plumbing system or during eruption at the seafloor (figures F15, F16, F17, F42, and F43 in Shipboard Scientific Party, 2002, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.193.104.2002). An additional example of formerly spinifex-textured xenolith, the first from Site 1188 (Snowcap) and the first from the upper cristobalite-bearing zone of alteration, has been revealed by postcruise studies. Furthermore, a pristine sample of the parent lithology has been found within a dredge haul (MD-138, Binatang-2000 Cruise of Franklin; 3°43.60'S, 151°40.35'E, 1688 meters below sea level) from the Satanic Mills hydrothermal field at PACMANUS, near ODP Site 1191. The purpose of this report is to document these discoveries and thereby to confirm and build on shipboard interpretations. To my knowledge, similar xenoliths have never before been found in modern island arc or backarc volcanic sequences. Spinifex textures are most common in Archean komatiites, some of which are bimodally associated with calc-alkaline felsic volcanic rocks.

Volcanic ash was recovered from lower Aptian to Albian deposits from DSDP Sites 463, 465, and 466; pelagic clay of the upper Pleistocene to Upper Cretaceous was recovered mainly from Site 464, with minor amounts at Sites 465 and 466. We present X-ray-mineralogy data on pelagic clay and altered volcanic ash recovered from the four Leg 62 sites. In addition, two ash samples from Sites 463 and 465, a pelagic clay from Site 464, and a clay vein from the basaltic basement at Site 464 each were analyzed for major, minor, and trace elements. Our purpose is to describe the mineralogy and chemistry of altered ash and pelagic clays, to determine the sources of their parent material, and to delineate the diagenetic history of these clay-rich deposits. Correlation of chemistry and mineralogy of ash and pelagic clay with volcanic rocks suspected to be their parent material is not always straightforward, because weathering and diagenetic alteration caused depletion or enrichment of many elements.

Thirty-five samples from Hole 778A were prepared for X-ray diffraction (XRD) mineralogical analyses and for chemical analyses of major and trace elements. Most of the selected samples were silt- and sand-sized sedimentary serpentinites or microbreccias except for a soft clast of mafic rock, a hard clast of massive serpentinized peridotite, and a pebble of consolidated, undeformed serpentine microbreccia that contained planktonic foraminifers. Both mineralogical and geochemical analyses allow discrimination of three groups among the analyzed samples. These groups correspond to three stratigraphic intervals present along the drilled section. Group A contains the upper samples (lithologic Unit I). These consist of poorly consolidated serpentine muds carrying hard-rock clasts (serpentinized peridotites, metabasalts). They are characterized by the following mineralogical assemblage: serpentine, Fe-oxides and hydroxides, aragonite, and halite. They exhibit variable SiO2, MgO contents, but are characterized by a SiO2/MgO ratio near 1. CaO content is high in relation to development of aragonite. Al2O3 content is low. Relatively high K2O, Na2O, and Sr contents are present, presumably in relation to interactions with seawater. Group B (30-77 mbsf) contains samples exhibiting very homogeneous chemical and mineralogical compositions. They consist of serpentinite microbreccias exhibiting frequent shear structures. Hard-rock clasts are also present (serpentinized peridotites, metabasalts, one possible chert fragment). The mineralogy of the Group B samples is characterized by the presence of serpentine and authigenic minerals: hydroxycarbonates and hydrogrossular. Calcite and chlorite are also present, but all the samples lack aragonite. Their chemical compositions are remarkably similar to compositions of their parent rocks. Group C contains silt- and sand-sized serpentine and serpentine microbreccias, which are locally rich in red clasts, probably strongly altered (oxidized?) mafic fragments. Intervals having clasts of more diverse origin than those higher in the section were recovered. Clast lithology includes serpentinized peridotites, metabasalts, metavolcaniclastite, meta-olivine gabbro, and amphibolite sandstone. Mineralogy and geochemistry reflect these compositions. Serpentine content of the samples is less than in previous groups. Correlatively, sepiolite, palygorskite, and chlorite-smectite are mineral phases present in the analyzed samples. Accessory igneous minerals (amphiboles, pyroxenes, hematite) also were found. The chemical compositions of most of Group C samples differ from that of massive serpentinized peridotites. The main differences are (1) higher SiO2, CaO, TiO2 and Al2O3 contents, (2) a SiO2/MgO ratio greater than 1, and (3) a negative correlation between Al2O3, and MgO, Cr, and Ni. These characteristics suggest new constraints relative to the flow structure of the flank of Conical Seamount.

ODP Leg 104 recovered 914 m of volcanics at Site 642 on the Vøring Plateau in the Norwegian Sea. The upper series of these volcanics correlates with seaward-dipping seismic reflectors (DRS), and is tholeiitic in character. The lower series underlies the DRS and is broadly andesitic in character. Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd, and Pb isotopic analyses show that upper series samples have isotopic features characteristic of MORB, except for one dike sample that has a Pb isotopic composition that may indicate interaction of its parent magma with older continental crust. The five most silicic samples from the lower series, which occur high up in the sequence, define a 63 ± 19 Ma Rb-Sr whole-rock isochron age, and have an initial 87Sr/86Sr of 0.7116 ± 0.0004. Other lower series samples have lower initial 87Sr/86Sr, but all are greater than any upper series rock. The combined evidence of initial 87Sr/86Sr, initial epsilon-Nd values, Sm-Nd model ages, Pb isotopic compositions, and petrographic features clearly indicate that lower series rocks were derived, at least in part, from continental crustal source materials. That the DRS is underlain by rocks of continental character is an important observation, constraining models for the development of DRS-type passive continental margins.

Boron contents and boron, carbon and oxygen stable isotopes were determined for authigenic carbonates recovered from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 146, Oregon margin. Carbonate precipitates are the most widespread authigenic phase in the shallow accretionary wedge and carry chemical information about long-term variations in pore fluid origin and flow paths in the Cascadia subduction zone. Drilling the first ridge (toe area including the frontal thrust) and the second ridge (or Hydrate Ridge) of the prism demonstrated different fluid regimes, with higher B contents in the authigenic precipitates at the toe. The delta11B of 18 authigenic precipitates analysed ranges from 13.9 per mil to as high as 39.8 per mil, extending the upper range of previously reported carbonate delta11B values considerably. When related to the delta11B ratio of their parent solutions, these data are characteristic of fluid-related processes in accretionary prisms. Together with delta13C and delta18O, delta11B ratios of the carbonate concretions, nodules and crusts allow one to distinguish between precipitation influenced by (i) seawater, (ii) fluid reservoirs at different depth levels within the accretionary prism and (iii) cage water from dissociated gas hydrates, the latter possibly indicating a fluctuation of the bottom simulating reflector during most recent Earth's history. From this first systematic boron study on authigenic precipitates from an accretionary prism it is suggested that B contents of such carbonate crusts and concretions exceed those reported for other marine carbonates. Given the abundance of such precipitates at convergent margins, they represent a significant B sink in geochemical cycling. Isotopic compositions of the parent fluids to the carbonates mirror B chemistry of modern pore waters from convergent margins. The precipitates carry information of different subduction-related fluid processes over a certain period of time, and hence are a crucial tracer in the investigation of palaeo-fluid flow.

SIMS analyses have been carried out on clinopyroxenes, plagioclases and amphiboles of six gabbroic samples from Holes 921-924 of the Ocean Drilling Program Leg 153 sited in the MARK area of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at the ridge-transform intersection, to investigate the rare earth, trace and volatile element distribution in the lower ocean crust during igneous crystallization and higher grade metamorphic conditions. The metagabbros underwent granulite to subgreenschist facies conditions through three main tectono-metamorphic phases: (1) ductile regime (750 < T < 1000 °C and P = 0.3 GPa); (2) transitional regime (600 < T < 700 °C and P = 0.2 GPa); (3) brittle regime (350 < T < 600 °C and P < 0.2 GPa). Igneous clinopyroxenes show Cl-chondrite normalized patterns depleted in LREE, and nearly flat for HREE. The rare earth and trace element distributions in igneous clinopyroxenes and plagioclases indicate that these minerals act as REE reservoirs, and comprise the main contribution to the overall rock content. The abundances in igneous minerals reflect the degree of fractionation of the parent liquids. In metamorphic clinopyroxenes recrystallized in anhydrous assemblages, the REE and trace elements patterns mimic those of the primary ones. Conversely, clinopyroxerie re-equilibrated in amphibolebearing assemblages shows a significant increase in REE, Ti, Zr, Y and V, a negative Eu anomaly, and slight decreases in Sr and Ba. An overall increase of REE and some trace elements is evident in hydrous assemblages, with preferential partitioning in the amphibole. It shows high Ti (18196-22844 ppm), LREE depleted patterns and LaN/SmN = 0.10-0.33, LaN/YbN = 0.10-0.30. Amphiboles from granoblastic assemblages show homogeneous patterns with no or a positive anomaly for TiN and negative anomalies for SrN and ZrN. Volatiles in amphibole are low, with Cl/F < 1; H2O% is significantly lower than the stoichiometric ratio (1.33-1.53%). The composition of the clinopyroxene and amphibole recrystallized in low-strain domains records evidence of incomplete re-equilibration, and element diffusion and partitioning is in part controlled by the textural site. The possible origins of the fluids involved in the metamorphic recrystallization are discussed: (1) remobilization from igneous amphibole; (2) exsolution from evolved melts; (3) introduction of seawater-derived fluids modified in rock-dominated systems; (4) injection of highly evolved hydrous melts during the metamorphic process.

Soil degradation threatens agricultural production and food security in Sub-Saharan Africa. In the coming decades, soil degradation, in particular soil erosion, will become worse through the expansion of agriculture into savannah and forest and changes in climate. This study aims to improve the understanding of how land use and climate change affect the hydrological cycle and soil erosion rates at the catchment scale. We used the semi-distributed, time-continuous erosion model SWAT (Soil Water Assessment Tool) to quantify runoff processes and sheet and rill erosion in the Upper Ouémé River catchment (14500 km**2, Central Benin) for the period 1998-2005. We could then evaluate a range of land use and climate change scenarios with the SWAT model for the period 2001-2050 using spatial data from the land use model CLUE-S and the regional climate model REMO. Field investigations were performed to parameterise a soil map, to measure suspended sediment concentrations for model calibration and validation and to characterise erosion forms, degraded agricultural fields and soil conservation practices. Modelling results reveal current "hotspots" of soil erosion in the north-western, eastern and north-eastern parts of the Upper Ouémé catchment. As a consequence of rapid expansion of agricultural areas triggered by high population growth (partially caused by migration) and resulting increases in surface runoff and topsoil erosion, the mean sediment yield in the Upper Ouémé River outlet is expected to increase by 42 to 95% by 2025, depending on the land use scenario. In contrast, changes in climate variables led to decreases in sediment yield of 5 to 14% in 2001-2025 and 17 to 24% in 2026-2050. Combined scenarios showed the dominance of land use change leading to changes in mean sediment yield of -2 to +31% in 2001-2025. Scenario results vary considerably within the catchment. Current "hotspots" of soil erosion will aggravate, and a new "hotspot" will appear in the southern part of the catchment. Although only small parts of the Upper Ouémé catchment belong to the most degraded zones in the country, sustainable soil and plant management practices should be promoted in the entire catchment. The results of this study can support planning of soil conservation activities in Benin.
