Bituminous substances in metalliferous sediments from the region of the triple junction in the Indian Ocean were studied. Specific peculiarities of their structure confirming location in "hot conditions" were revealed. Hydrocarbons are genetically connected with hydrothermal matter, and thus they could be considered as a geochemical indicator of hydrothermal processes in the ocean.

Petrographic and geochemical analyses of basaltic rocks dredged from the first segment of the Southwest Indian Ridge near the Rodriguez Triple Junction have been completed in order to investigate water-rock interaction processes during mid-ocean ridge (MOR) hydrothermal alteration in the Indian Ocean. In the study area, we have successfully recovered a serial section of upper oceanic crust exposed along a steep rift valley wall which was uplifted and emplaced along a low angle normal fault. On the basis of microscopic observation, dredged samples are classified into three types: fresh lavas, low-temperature altered rocks, and high-temperature altered rocks. The fresh lavas have essentially the same chemical composition as typical N-MORB, although LILE and Nb are slightly enriched and depleted, respectively. Low temperature alteration brought about the enrichment of K2O, Rb, and U due to the presence of K-rich celadonite and U-adsorption onto Fe-oxyhydroxide and clay minerals. On the other hand, chloritization, albitization, and addition of base metals by high temperature hydrothermal alteration result in enrichments of MnO, MgO, Na2O, Cu, and Zn and depletions of CaO, K2O, Cr, Co, Ni, Rb, Sr, and Ba. In addition, U-enrichment is also observable in the high temperature altered rocks probably due to the decrease of uranite solubility in the reducing high-temperature hydrothermal solution. These petrological and geochemical features are comparable to those of the volcanic zone to transition zone rocks in the DSDP/ODP Hole 504B, indicating that our samples were recovered from the upper ~1000 m section of the oceanic crust. Only the alteration minerals related to off-axis alteration are absent in our samples dredged from near the spreading axis. The similarity of alteration between our samples from the Indian Ocean and the Hole 504B rocks from the Pacific Ocean suggests that MOR hydrothermal systems are probably similar across all world oceans.

This paper presents data on geographic and geologic conditions of modern sedimentation in the Lake Untersee, the largest lake in the East Antarctica. Geochemical and sedimentation data indicate that the leading mechanism supplying aluminosilicate sedimentary material to the surface layer of bottom sediments is seasonal melting of the Anuchin glacier and the mountain glacier on the southeastern part of the valley hosting the lake. Strongly reduced conditions in the lowermost 25 m of the water column in the smaller of two depressions of the lake bottom were favorable for enrichment of the bottom sediments in bacteriogenic organic matter, Mo, Au, and Pd. H2S-contaminated water results to significant enrichment of the sediments only in redox-sensitive elements that are able to migrate in anionic complexes and precipitate (co-precipitate) as sulfides.

Along three sections in the Kara Sea and Obskaya Guba concentrations of dissolved and particulate organic carbon (DOC and POC, respectively) in waters , as well as of organic carbon in bottom sediments (Corg) in September-October 2007 were determined. DOC varied from 6.3 to 2400 µg/l, POC - from 0.84 to 12.2 mg/l. For all samples the average DOC was 200 µg/l (n = 78; sigma = 368), the average POC - 2.7 mg/l (n = 92; sigma = 2.7). Concentrations of Corg in dried samples of upper layer bottom sediments varied from 0.13 to 2.10% (aver. = 0.9%; n = 21; sigma = 0.49%). It is shown that distribution of different forms of organic matter (OM) is an indicator of supply and scattering of particulate matter in the Kara Sea and that DOC and POC of the Kara Sea are formed under impact of runoff of the Ob and Yenisei Rivers. It is found that distribution of OM in bottom sediments is closely related to their grain size composition and to the structure of currents in the area. Variations in Corg concentration in bottom sediment cores from the zone of riverine and sea water mixing represent variability of OM burial.

Seasonal dynamics in the activity of Arctic shelf benthos have been the subject of few local studies, and the pronounced among-site variability characterizing their results makes it difficult to upscale and generalize their conclusions. In a regional study encompassing five sites at 100-595 m water depth in the southeastern Beaufort Sea, we found that total pigment concentrations in surficial sediments, used as proxies of general food supply to the benthos, rose significantly after the transition from ice-covered conditions in spring (March-June 2008) to open-water conditions in summer (June-August 2008), whereas sediment Chl a concentrations, typical markers of fresh food input, did not. Macrobenthic biomass (including agglutinated foraminifera >500 µm) varied significantly among sites (1.2-6.4 g C/m**2 in spring, 1.1-12.6 g C/m**2 in summer), whereas a general spring-to-summer increase was not detected. Benthic carbon remineralisation also ranged significantly among sites (11.9-33.2 mg C/m**2/day in spring, 11.6-44.4 mg C/m**2/day in summer) and did in addition exhibit a general significant increase from spring-to-summer. Multiple regression analysis suggests that in both spring and summer, sediment Chl a concentration is the prime determinant of benthic carbon remineralisation, but other factors have a significant secondary influence, such as foraminiferan biomass (negative in both seasons), water depth (in spring) and infaunal biomass (in summer). Our findings indicate the importance of the combined and dynamic effects of food supply and benthic community patterns on the carbon remineralisation of the polar shelf benthos in seasonally ice-covered seas.
