The knowledge of ice sheet surface topography and the location of the ice divides are essential for ice dynamic modeling. An improved digital elevation model (DEM) of Dronning Maud Land (DML), Antarctica, is presented in this paper. It is based on ground-based kinematic GPS profiles, airborne radar altimetry, and data of the airborne radio-echo sounding system, as well as spaceborne laser altimetry from NASA's Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat). The accuracy of ICESat ice sheet altimetry data in the area of investigation is discussed. The location of the ice divides is derived from aspect calculation of the topography and is verified with several velocity data derived from repeated static GPS measurements.

In this study we present a late Miocene - early Pliocene record of sixty-four zones with prominent losses in the magnetic susceptibility signal, taken on a sediment drift (ODP Site 1095) on the Pacific continental rise of the West Antarctic Peninsula. The zones are comparable in shape and magnitude and occur commonly at glacial-to-interglacial transitions. High resolution records of organic matter, magnetic susceptibility and clay mineral composition from early Pliocene intervals demonstrate that neither dilution effects nor provenance changes of the sediments have caused the magnetic susceptibility losses. Instead, reductive dissolution of magnetite under suboxic conditions seems to be the most likely explanation. We propose that during the deglaciation exceptionally high organic fluxes in combination with weak bottom water currents and prominent sediment draping diatom ooze layers produced temporary suboxic conditions in the uppermost sediments. It is remarkable that synsedimentary suboxic conditions can be observed in one of the best ventilated open ocean regions of the World.

During the cruise the turbulence probe MSS050 was used for microstructure measurements. The profiler is produced by Sea and Sun Technology GmbH in co-operation with ISW Wassermesstechnik. The probe was equipped with 2 velocity microstructure shear sensors, a microstructure temperature sensor, standard CTD sensors for precision measurements, a vibration control sensor, a two component tilt sensor, a fluorescence sensor and surface detection sensor (SD) to indicate the water surface hit at rising measurements. The sampling rate for all sensors is 1024 samples per second, the resolution 16 bit. During the MSS measurements, the ship was moving with speed approx. 0.5-1.0 knots with respect to the water against the wind. In order to take into account the intermittent nature of marine turbulence, repeated MSS measurements were carried out in bursts of typically 10 profiles per station. The measurement interval was approximately 7 (10) min for a profile to 140 (200) dbar. During JC87 cruise 8 series of turbulence measurements were conducted. Fluorescence data was obtained on the 5 of them.

The goal of this work has been to examine the influence of upper ocean food web structure and functioning on both the natural and artificially enhanced sequestration of carbon within the ocean. Data obtained in the mesocosm experiment run in the Bay of Hopavågen in August 2012 are used to assess the extent to which organic matter produced within four different food webs is retained in the upper ocean food web versus remineralized back to carbon dioxide and inorganic nutrients (ammonium, dissolved silicon, phosphate) versus exported from the system in the form of rapidly sinking particles. The experiment was carried out in a set of 12 mesocosms covering, in triplicate, 2 different phytoplankton communities (diatom versus non-diatom) exposed to 2 different zooplankton communities (-copepod and +copepod). These starting conditions were established by first filling the bags, roughly simultaneously, with seawater from the Bay of Hopavågen. Mesozooplankton were then removed to the most complete extent possible immediately removed from half of the mesocosms through repeated vertical hauls of a plankton net (200 µm mesh). Nitrate and phosphate was added to half mesocosms daily to promote the growth of non-siliceous phytoplankton (e.g. dinoflagellates or coccolithophores). To the other half of the mesocosms, nitrate, phosphate, and silicate were added to promote the growth of diatoms. Material was allowed to settle and the two distinct phytoplankton populations were allowed to develop for 4 days, after which copepods collected from the Bay of Hopavågen were added back to the half of the N+P mesocosms and to the half of the N+P+Si mesocosms from which mesozooplankton had not been removed at the beginning. This yielded a set of four initial starting conditions (N+P-copepods, N+P+copepods, N+P+Si-copepods, and N+P+Si+copepods). In the primary mesocosms, samples for a set of core parameters were taken every time the mesocosms were sampled. Samples for particulates (PIC, BSi, POC, PON) were collected on GF/F or 0.4 µm polycarbonate.

The speciation of strongly chelated iron during the 22-day course of an iron enrichment experiment in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean deviates strongly from ambient natural waters. Three iron additions (ferrous sulfate solution) were conducted, resulting in elevated dissolved iron concentrations (Nishioka, J., Takeda, S., de Baar, H.J.W., Croot, P.L., Boye, M., Laan, P., Timmermans, K.R., 2005, Changes in the concentration of iron in different size fractions during an iron enrichment experiment in the open Southern Ocean. Marine Chemistry, doi:10.1016/j.marchem.2004.06.040) and significant Fe(II) levels (Croot, P.L., Laan, P., Nishioka, J., Strass, V., Cisewski, B., Boye, M., Timmermans, K.R., Bellerby, R.G., Goldson, L., Nightingale, P., de Baar, H.J.W., 2005, Spatial and Temporal distribution of Fe(II) and H2O2 during EisenEx, an open ocean mescoscale iron enrichment. Repeated vertical profiles for dissolved (filtrate < 0.2 µm) Fe(III)-binding ligands indicated a production of chelators in the upper water column induced by iron fertilizations. Abiotic processes (chemical reactions) and an inductive biologically mediated mechanism were the likely sources of the dissolved ligands which existed either as inorganic amorphous phases and/or as strong organic chelators. Discrete analysis on ultra-filtered samples (< 200 kDa) suggested that the produced ligands would be principally colloidal in size (> 200 kDa-< 0.2 µm), as opposed to the soluble fraction (< 200 kDa) which dominated prior to the iron infusions. Yet these colloidal ligands would exist in a more transient nature than soluble ligands which may have a longer residence time. The production of dissolved Fe-chelators was generally smaller than the overall increase in dissolved iron in the surface infused mixed layer, leaving a fraction (about 13-40%) of dissolved Fe not bound by these dissolved Fe-chelators. It is suggested that this fraction would be inorganic colloids. The unexpected persistence of such high inorganic colloids concentrations above inorganic Fe-solubility limits illustrates the peculiar features of the chemical iron cycling in these waters. Obviously, the artificial about hundred-fold increase of overall Fe levels by addition of dissolved inorganic Fe(II) ions yields a major disruption of the natural physical-chemical abundances and reactivity of Fe in seawater. Hence the ensuing responses of the plankton ecosystem, while in itself significant, are not necessarily representative for a natural enrichment, for example by dry or wet deposition of aeolian dust. Ultimately, the temporal changes of the Fe(III)-binding ligand and iron concentrations were dominated by the mixing events that occurred during EISENEX, with storms leading to more than an order of magnitude dilution of the dissolved ligands and iron concentrations. This had strongest impact on the colloidal size class (> 200 kDa-< 0.2 µm) where a dramatic decrease of both the colloidal ligand and the colloidal iron levels (Nishioka, J., Takeda, S., de Baar, H.J.W., Croot, P.L., Boye, M., Laan, P., Timmermans, K.R., 2005, Changes in the concentration of iron in different size fractions during an iron enrichment experiment in the open Southern Ocean. From 27 January to 23 June 1979 R.V. "Meteor" surveyed the central equatorial Atlantic on a section along 22° W from 3° N to 2° S. During the observation period, a hydrographic section down to 600 m was repeated ten times with a continous "Howaldt-Bathysonde" CTD and a rosette sampler. The station distance was 10 to 15 nm. The water samples were used to recalibrate salinity and to determine oxygen, nutrients and chlorophyll a. An undulating CTD system ("Delphin") was towed on 11 sections. A profiling distance of one to two nautical miles and a profile depth of 90 m was obtained. Five current meter arrys were moored along 22° W between 3° N and 1°S from January to March 1979. In May and June two moorings were installed at 2° N and at the equator. On the buoys measurements of wind speed and direction were obtained. At 43 stations a wire-guided Aanderaa profiling current meter was successfully lowered. Drifting buoy experiments were repeated three times with clusters of 5 to 10 buoys. A fourth experiment took place in 1978 in the Gulf of Guinea. On the way from and to XBT sections were carried out. The data sets obtained by these instruments are presented in this data report.

Changes in El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variability are difficult to extract from paleoceanographic reconstructions because they are superimposed on changes in seasonal variability that modulate the first-order climate signal. Here we address this problem by reconstructing thermocline structure from a marine sediment core retrieved from the eastern equatorial Pacific. At the core location, changes in hydrologic parameters within the thermocline are linked to ENSO activity, with a reduced influence of seasonal variability compared to surface waters. We performed repeated isotopic analyses (d18O) on single specimens of the thermocline-dwelling planktonic foraminifera Neogloboquadrina dutertrei at several targeted time periods over the last 50 ka to extract the total thermocline variance, a parameter supposed to reveal changes in ENSO. No fundamental changes in amplitude and frequency of the events were detected despite differences in climatic background. However, our data suggest that long-term variations in the thermocline variability occurred over the last 50 ka, with the highest and lowest ENSO activities occurring during the last glacial period and the Last Glacial Maximum, respectively.
