Increased atmospheric CO2 concentration is leading to changes in the carbonate chemistry and the temperature of the ocean. The impact of these processes on marine organisms will depend on their ability to cope with those changes, particularly the maintenance of calcium carbonate structures. Both a laboratory experiment (long-term exposure to decreased pH and increased temperature) and collections of individuals from natural environments characterized by low pH levels (individuals from intertidal pools and around a CO2 seep) were here coupled to comprehensively study the impact of near-future conditions of pH and temperature on the mechanical properties of the skeleton of the euechinoid sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. To assess skeletal mechanical properties, we characterized the fracture force, Young's modulus, second moment of area, material nanohardness, and specific Young's modulus of sea urchin test plates. None of these parameters were significantly affected by low pH and/or increased temperature in the laboratory experiment and by low pH only in the individuals chronically exposed to lowered pH from the CO2 seeps. In tidal pools, the fracture force was higher and the Young's modulus lower in ambital plates of individuals from the rock pool characterized by the largest pH variations but also a dominance of calcifying algae, which might explain some of the variation. Thus, decreases of pH to levels expected for 2100 did not directly alter the mechanical properties of the test of P. lividus. Since the maintenance of test integrity is a question of survival for sea urchins and since weakened tests would increase the sea urchins' risk of predation, our findings indicate that the decreasing seawater pH and increasing seawater temperature expected for the end of the century should not represent an immediate threat to sea urchins vulnerability

New information on possible resource value of sea floor manganese nodule deposits in the eastern north Pacific has been obtained by a study of records and collections of the 1972 Sea Scope Expedition. Nodule abundance (percent of sea floor covered) varies greatly, according to photographs from eight stations and data from other sources. All estimates considered reliable are plotted on a map of the region. Similar maps show the average content of Ni, Cu, Mn and Co at 89 stations from which three or more nodules were analyzed. Variations in nodule metal content at each station are shown graphically in an appendix, where data on nodule sizes are also given. Results of new analyses of 420 nodules from 93 stations for mn, fe, ni, cu, CO, and zn are listed in another appendix. Relatively high Ni + Cu content is restricted chiefly to four groups of stations in the equatorial region, where group averages are 1.86, 1.99, 2.47, and 2.55 weight-percent. Collections made with 150 l sampling bottles and BR 113/140 nets, as well as direct counts from the Mir submersible are used to analyze vertical distribution of total biomass of meso- and macroplankton and biomass distributions of their main component groups in the central oligotrophic regions of the North Pacific. Biomass of mesoplankton in the upper 200 m layer ranges from 3.1 to 8.6 g/m**2, but sometimes it increases up to as much as 98 g/m**2 in local population explosions of salps. Jellies predominate in macroplankton at depths of up to 2-3 km, contributing 97-98% of live weight and 30-70% of biomass as organic carbon. In importance they are followed by micronecton fishes (up to 40% of organic carbon). Contributions of other groups countable from the submersible were negligible. Distributions of species at particular stations are discussed.

Thanks to the courtesy of the British Museum of Natural History the author obtained from their Challenger collections two small nodules, and through a similar courtesy of the Mineralogical Department of the Riksmuseum in Stockholm one half of a much larger nodule, also from the Challenger Expedition. Results from his initial measurements of the radium contents of these samples convinced the author that the radium in the nodules is accumulated from the surrounding sediment. In the present paper the author conducted a much more thorough investigation on nodules obtained during the U.S. Albatross cruises of Dr. Agassiz. Detailed measurements of radium were conducted on individual layers and spots inside each nodule.

One of the goals of EU BASIN is to understand variability in production across the Atlantic and the impact of this variability on higher trophic levels. One aspect of these investigations is to examine the biomes defined by Longhurst (2007). These biomes are largely based on productivity measured with remote sensing. During MSM 26, mesopelagic fish and size-spectrum data were collected to test the biome classifications of the north Atlantic. In most marine systems, the size-spectrum is a decay function with more, smaller organisms and fewer larger organisms. The intercept of the size-spectrum has been linked to overall productivity while the slope represents the "rate of decay" of this productivity (Zhou 2006, doi:10.1093/plankt/fbi119). A Laser In-Situ Scattering Transmissometer was used to collect size-spectrum data and net collections were made to capture mesopelagic fish. The relationship among the mesopelagic fish size and abundance distributions will be compared to the estimates of production from the size-spectrum data to evaluate the biomes of the stations occupied during MSM 26.

Modern planktonic foraminifera collected with a sediment trap and subfossil assemblages from surface sediments from Galway Mound in the Porcupine Seabight off southwestern Ireland, northeastern Atlantic, were studied to show recent assemblage variations. The sediment trap operated from April to August 2004 and covers the spring bloom and early summer conditions with sampling intervals of 8 days. Eleven different species were recorded. Glorotalia hirsuta, Turborotalita quinqueloba and Globigerinita glutinata appeared predominately in spring. Neogloboquadrina incompta, Globigerina bulloides and Globorotalia inflata were abundant in spring and summer. The highest foraminiferal tests flux occured in June. The faunal composition was similar to subfossil assemblages from surface sediments, but the species proportions were different. This was mainly affected by the subtropical G. hirsuta, which was frequent in 2004 and rare in surface sediment samples and in earlier plankton collections from the southern Porcupine Seabight that were performed during the 1990s. The weight of deposited foraminifera is mainly influenced by spring bloom as indicated by sea-surface chlorophyll-a data. The top three-ranked species, G. hirsuta, N. incompta and G. bulloides contributed 87 % to the foraminiferal carbonate flux at Galway Mound. Foraminiferal carbonate and shell flux as well as the shell size revealed variations, which are related to lunar periodicity. The data infer a lunar pacing of reproduction for the main species as well as for G. glutinata and G. inflata, which was not recorded before.

Seagrasses are ecosystem engineers that offer important habitat for a large number of species and provide a range of ecosystem services. Many seagrass ecosystems are dominated by a single species; with research showing that genotypic diversity at fine spatial scales plays an important role in maintaining a range of ecosystem functions. However, for most seagrass species, information on fine-scale patterns of genetic variation in natural populations is lacking. In this study we use a hierarchical sampling design to determine levels of genetic and genotypic diversity at different spatial scales (centimeters, meters, kilometers) in the Australian seagrass Zostera muelleri. Our analysis shows that at fine-spatial scales (< 1 m) levels of genotypic diversity are relatively low (R (Plots) = 0.37 ± 0.06 SE), although there is some intermingling of genotypes. At the site (10's m) and meadow location (km) scale we found higher levels of genotypic diversity (R (sites) = 0.79 ± 0.04 SE; R (Locations) = 0.78 ± 0.04 SE). We found some sharing of genotypes between sites within meadows, but no sharing of genotypes between meadow locations. We also detected a high level of genetic structuring between meadow locations (FST = 0.278). Taken together, our results indicate that both sexual and asexual reproduction are important in maintaining meadows of Z. muelleri. The dominant mechanism of asexual reproduction appears to occur via localised rhizome extension, although the sharing of a limited number of genotypes over the scale of 10's of metres could also result from the localised dispersal and recruitment of fragments. The large number of unique genotypes at the meadow scale indicates that sexual reproduction is important in maintaining these populations, while the high level of genetic structuring suggests little gene flow and connectivity between our study sites. These results imply that recovery from disturbances will occur through both sexual and asexual regeneration, but the limited connectivity at the landscape-scale implies that recovery at meadow-scale losses is likely to be limited.

This study was aimed at reconstructing a sequence of events in the magmatic and metamorphic evolution of peridotites, gabbroids, and trondhjemites from internal oceanic complexes of the Ashadze and Logachev hydrothermal vent fields. Collections of plutonic rocks from Cruises 22 and 26 of R/V "Professor Logachev", Cruise 41 of R/V "Akademik Mstislav Keldysh", and from the Serpentine Russian-French expedition aboard R/V "Pourquoi pas?" were objects of this study. Data reported here suggest that the internal oceanic complexes of the Ashadze and Logachev fields formed via the same scenario in these two regions of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. On the other hand, an analysis of petrological and geochemical characteristics of the rocks indicated that the internal oceanic complexes of the MAR axial zone between 12°58'N and 14°45'N show pronounced petrological and geochemical heterogeneity manifested in variations in degree of depletion of mantle residues and in Nd isotopic compositions of rocks from the gabbro-peridotite association. Trondhjemites from the Ashadze hydrothermal field can be considered as partial melting products of gabbroids under influence of hydrothermal fluids. It was supposed that presence of trondhjemites in internal oceanic complexes of MAR can be used as a marker for the highest temperature deep-rooted hydrothermal systems. Perhaps, the region of the MAR axial zone, in which petrologically and geochemically contrasting internal oceanic complexes are spatially superimposed, serves as an area for development of large hydrothermal clusters with considerable ore-forming potential.

A study of the distribution, dispersal and composition of surficial sediments in the Strait of Georgia, B.C., has resulted in the understanding of basic sedimentologic conditions within this area. The Strait of Georgia is: a long, narrow, semi-enclosed basin with a restricted circulation and a single, main, sediment source. The Fraser. River supplies practically all the sediment now being deposited in the Strait of Georgia, the bulk of it during the spring and summer freshet. This river is building a delta into the Strait from the east side near the south end. Ridges of Pleistocene deposits within the Strait and Pleistocene material around the margins, like bedrock exposures, provide local sources of sediment of only minor importance. Rivers and streams other than the Fraser contribute insignificant quantities of sediment to the Strait. Sandy sediments are concentrated in the vicinity of the delta, and in the area to the south and southeast. Mean grain size decreases from the delta toward the northwest along the axis of the Strait, and basinwards from the margins. Silts and clays are deposited in deep water west and north of the delta front, and in deep basins northwest of the delta. Poorly sorted sediments containing a gravel component are located near tidal passes, on the Vancouver Island shelf area, on ridge tops within the Strait, and with sandy sediments at the southeastern end of the study area. The Pleistocene ridges are areas of non-deposition, having at most a thin veneer of modern mud on their crests and upper flanks. The southeastern end of the study area contains a thick wedge of shandy sediment which appears to be part of an earlier delta of the Fraser River. Evidence suggests that it is now a site of active submarine erosion. Sediments throughout the Strait are compositionally extremely similar, with-Pleistocene deposits of the Fraser River drainage basin providing the principal, heterogeneous source. Gravels and coarse sands are composed primarily of lithic fragments, dominantly of dioritic to granodloritlc composition. Sand fractions exhibit increasing simplicity of mineralogy with decreasing grain-size. Quartz, felspar, amphibole and fine-grained lithic fragments are the dominant constituents of the finer sand grades. Coarse and medium silt fractions have compositions similar to the fine sands. Fine silts show an increase in abundance of phyllosilicate material, a feature even more evident in the clay-size fractions on Montmorillonite, illite, chlorite, quartz and feldspar are the main minerals in the coarse clay fraction, with minor mixed-layer clays and kaolinite. The fine clay fraction is dominated by montmorillonite, with lesser amounts of illite and chlorite. The sediments have high base-exchange capacities, related to a considerable content of montmorillonite. Magnesium is present in exchange positions in greater quantity in Georgia Strait sediments than in sediments from the Fraser River, indicating a preferential uptake of this element in the marine environment. Manganese nodules collected from two localities in the Strait imply slow sediment accumulation rates at these sites. Sedimentation rates on and close to the delta, and in the deep basins to the northwest, are high.

The software Pan2Applic is a tool to convert files or folders of files (ascii/tab-separated data files with or without metaheader), downloaded from PANGAEA via the search engine or the data warehouse to formats as used by applications, e.g. for visualization or further processing. It may also be used to convert files or zip-archives as downloaded from CD-ROM data collections, published in the WDC-MARE Reports series. Pan2Applic is distributed as freeware for the operating systems Microsoft Windows, Apple OS X and Linux.
