Assemblages of organic-walled dinoflagellate cysts (dinocysts) from 116 marine surface samples have been analysed to assess the relationship between the spatial distribution of dinocysts and modern local environmental conditions [e.g. sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface salinity (SSS), productivity] in the eastern Indian Ocean. Results from the percentage analysis and statistical methods such as multivariate ordination analysis and end-member modelling, indicate the existence of three distinct environmental and oceanographic regions in the study area. Region 1 is located in western and eastern Indonesia and controlled by high SSTs and a low nutrient content of the surface waters. The Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) region (Region 2) is dominated by heterotrophic dinocyst species reflecting the region's high productivity. Region 3 is encompassing the area offshore north-west and west Australia which is characterised by the water masses of the Leeuwin Current, a saline and nutrient depleted southward current featuring energetic eddies.

Studies in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe (S. pombe) have done much to inform the view of heterochromatin and its control by the RNA interference (RNAi) machinery. Using cDNA synthesised from poly(A)-enriched RNA samples, numerous novel ncRNA loci were discovered, and the 50 and 30 ends of many other genes were refined in previous studies. Although some of these transcripts may encode novel proteins the function of the majority is yet to be determined. The authors have used strand-specific deep sequencing of RNA, irrespective of poly(A) status, to reveal a highly structured antisense programme that modulates gene expression to dictate cell fate decisions during sexual differentiation. They show that an extensive and elaborate array of ncRNA production accompanies sexual differentiation in the fission yeast S. pombe. Experimental manipulation suggests that these transcripts specifically regulate the function of the target genes.

With the growing pressure of eutrophication in tropical regions, the Mauritian shelf provides a natural situation to understand the variability in mesotrophic assemblages. Site-specific dynamics occur throughout the 1200 m depth gradient. The shallow assemblages divide into three types of warm-water mesotrophic foraminiferal assemblages, which is not only a consequence of high primary productivity restricting light to the benthos but due to low pore water oxygenation, shelf geomorphology, and sediment partitioning. In the intermediate depth (approx. 500 m), the increase in foraminiferal diversity is due to the cold-water coral habitat providing a greater range of micro niches. Planktonic species characterise the lower bathyal zone, which emphasizes the reduced benthic carbonate production at depth. Although, due to the strong hydrodynamics within the Golf, planktonic species occur in notable abundances through out the whole depth gradient. Overall, this study can easily be compared to other tropical marine settings investigating the long-term effects of tropical eutrophication and the biogeographic distribution of carbonate producing organisms.

The precision of late Paleocene to middle Eocene nannofossil datums is investigated by means of quantitative methods and correlated to the magnetic polarity stratigraphy, using sequences from the Northwest Pacific, Southeast Atlantic and Italy. It is the rule rather than the exception to find tails of very reduced abundances prior to, or after, a range of consistent and higher abundances. The absolutely first or final occurrence of a species, therefore, seldom provides a synchronous datum when material from different geographic areas are compared. On the other band, synchroneity is often confirmed when the initial sharp rise or the final sharp decline in abundance is used as datum level. The use of datums not employed in the two principal existing nannofossil zonal schemes can substantially improve the biostratigraphic resolution. Two established zonal markers show abundance patterns making them unsuitable as datums: the first occurrences of Ellipsolithus macellus (base NP4, diachronous) and Tribrachiatus nunnii (base NP10 and Paleocene/Eocene boundary, too rare and too short range in open ocean sections). The first occurrence of either Fasciculithus spp. or Sphenolithus spp. is a better marker near the base of NP4. The first occurrence of Discoaster diastypus at 56.6 Ma represents a suitable replacement for recognition of the Paleocene/Eocene boundary.

The Miocene Lincang leaf assemblage is used in this paper as proxy data to reconstruct the palaeoclimate of southwestern Yunnan (SW China) and the evolution of monsoon intensity. Three quantitative methods were chosen for this reconstruction, i.e. Leaf Margin Analysis (LMA), Climate Leaf Analysis Multivariate Program (CLAMP), and the Coexistence Approach (CA). These methods, however, yield inconsistent results, particularly for the precipitation, as also shown in European and other East Asian Cenozoic floras. The wide range of the reconstructed climatic parameters includes the Mean Annual Temperature (MAT) of 18.5-24.7 °C and the Mean Annual Precipitation (MAP) of 1213-3711 mm. Compared with the modern Lincang climate (MAT, 17.3 °C; MAP, 1178.7 mm), the Miocene climate is slightly warmer, wetter and has a higher temperature seasonality. A detailed comparison on the palaeoclimatic variables with the coeval Late Miocene Xiaolongtan flora from the eastern part of Yunnan allows us to investigate the development and interactions of both South Asian and East Asian monsoons during the Late Miocene in southwest China, now under strong influence of these monsoon systems. Our results suggest that the monsoon climate has already been established in southwest Yunnan during the Late Miocene. Furthermore, our results support that both Southeast Asian and East Asian monsoons co-occurred in Yunnan during the Late Miocene.

Selected calcareous nannofossils were investigated by means of quantitative methods in middle and upper Miocene sediments from the tropical Indian Ocean (ODP Leg 115) and equatorial Pacific Ocean (DSDP Leg 85, ODP Legs 130 and 138). Our goal was to test the reliability of the classic biohorizons used in the standard zonations of Martini (1971) and Bukry (1973) and, possibly, to improve biostratigraphic resolution in the Miocene. In a time interval of about 8 m.y., from the last occurrence (LO) of S. heteromorphus (~13.6 Ma) to the LO of D. quinqueramus (~5.5 Ma), a total 37 events were investigated, using both the conventional and some additional markers proposed in the literature. At least 17 of these events proved to be distinct biostratigraphic correlation lines between the two considered areas. This integrated biostratigraphic framework increases the biostratigraphic resolution in the middle-upper Miocene interval (of the order of about 0.5 m.y). All the investigated events were tied to the geomagnetic polarity time scale (GPTS) and compared to biomagnetostratigraphy from mid-latitude North Atlantic Site 94-608 (Olafsson, 1991; Gartner, 1992), thus obtaining further information about the biostratigraphic and biochronologic reliability of the investigated events and a significant improvement of the available nannofossil biomagnetostratigraphic model for the middle and late Miocene.

Cold seep environments such as sediments above outcropping hydrate at Hydrate Ridge (Cascadia margin off Oregon) are characterized by methane venting, high sulfide fluxes caused by the anaerobic oxidation of methane, and the presence of chemosynthetic communities. This investigation deals with the diversity and distribution of sulfate-reducing bacteria, some of which are directly involved in the anaerobic oxidation of methane as syntrophic partners of the methanotrophic archaea. The composition and activity of the microbial communities at methane vented and nonvented sediments are compared by quantitative methods including total cell counts, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Bacteria involved in the degradation of particulate organic carbon (POC) are as active and diverse as at other productive margin sites of similar water depths. The availability of methane supports a two orders of magnitude higher microbial biomass (up to 9.6×10**10cells/cm**3). Sediment samples were obtained during RV SONNE cruises SO143-2 and SO148-1 at the crest of southern Hydrate Ridge at the Cascadia convergent margin off the coast of Oregon. Sediment cores of 20 - 40 cm length were obtained using a video-guided multiple corer from gas hydrate bearing sediments and from reference sites not enriched in methane in the surface sediments. Samples for total cell counts were obtained from 1 cm core slices, fixed with 2% formaldehyde and stored cold (4°C) and the quantification of aggregates was done via epifluorescence microscopy after staining the sediments with Acridine Orange Direct Counts (AODC) according to the method of Meyer- Reil (1983, doi:10.1007/BF00395813). Total cell counts were defined as the sum of single cells plus the aggregated cells in the syntrophic consortia. DAPI staining was used to measure ANME2/DSS aggregate sizes via epifluorescence microscopy of FISH-treated samples. For FISH, subsamples of sediment cores were sliced into 1 cm intervals and fixed for 2-3 h with 3% formaldehyde (final concentration), washed twice with 1×PBS (10 mM sodium phosphate; 130 mM NaCl), and finally stored in 1×PBS/EtOH (1:1) at -20°C.
