Regional variations in abundance, morphology, and chemical composition of Fe-Mn nodules have a zonal character. Due to circumcontinental zonality of terrigenous sedimentation the main mass of the nodules occurs in the pelagic part of the ocean, in areas of minimal sedimentation rates. In spatial variations in morphology and chemical composition of the nodules the latitudinal zonality is very clear and associated with latitudinal changes in facial conditions of sedimentation. Elevated contents of Mn, Ni, and Cu and of Mn/Fe ratio occur in nodules from the radiolarian belt. Changes of chemical composition of the nodules with depth (vertical zonality of mineralization) are confirmed. Local variations in abundance, morphology and chemical composition of the nodules are caused by ruggedness of relief and depth variations, variations in sedimentation rate, age of ore formation, intensity of diagenetic redistribution of metals.

There has been much recent interest in the origin of silicic magmas at spreading centres away from any possible influence of continental crust. Here we present major and trace element data for 29 glasses (and 55 whole-rocks) sampled from a 40 km segment of the South East Rift in the Manus Basin that span the full compositional continuum from basalt to rhyolite (50-75 wt % SiO2). The glass data are accompanied by Sr-Nd-Pb, O and U-Th-Ra isotope data for selected samples. These overlap the ranges for published data from this part of the Manus Basin. Limited increases in Cl/K ratios with increasing SiO2, La-SiO2 and Yb-SiO2 relationships, and the oxygen isotope data rule out models in which the more silicic lavas result from partial melting of altered oceanic crust or altered oceanic gabbros. Rather, the data form a coherent array that is suggestive of closed-system fractional crystallization and this is well simulated by MELTS models run at 0.2 GPa and QFM (quartz-fayalite-magnetite buffer) with 1 wt % H2O, using a parental magma chosen from the basaltic glasses. Although some assimilation of altered oceanic crust or gabbro cannot be completely ruled out, there is no evidence that this plays an important role in the origin of the silicic lavas. The U-series disequilibria are dominated by 238U and 226Ra excesses that limit the timescale of differentiation to less than a few millennia. Overall, the data point to rapid evolution in relatively small magma lenses located near the base of thick oceanic crust; we speculate that this was coupled with relatively low rates of basaltic recharge. A similar model may be applicable to the generation of silicic magmas elsewhere in the ocean basins.

On Vermilion Sea Expedition two research vessels among which the R/V Spencer F. Baird conducted a geological and geophysical exploration of the Gulf of California from February to May, 1959. Support was obtained from the Office of Naval Research and the Bureau of Ships of the U. S. Navy and from a grant of the American Petroleum Institute. Study of the canyons was one feature of the first part of the expedition. Submarine canyon studies were directed by Francis P. Shepard, Professor of Submarine Geology, aboard the research vessel Spencer F. Baird. The expedition found that the narrow channel between Angel de la Guarda Island, toward the head of the Gulf, and the peninsula is scoured almost free of sediments by strong currents. On the other side of Angel de la Guarda Island, between it and the mainland, one of the dredge hauls brought up a manganese nodule. It came from a depth of approximately 1500 feet. This is the shallowest water in which the nodules have been found. Studies have been under way some time on the feasibility of mining such nodules from the sea floor. They contain cobalt, nickel, copper and other valuable metals. The clay mineralogical composition of a 552 cm long sediment core from Lake Terrasovoje in Amery Oasis, East Antarctica, was analysed and compared with that in surface sediments from other locations in the vicinity. The lower part of the sediment core is formed by sub- and proglacial sediments with a dominance of smectite and illite, and lower amounts of kaolinite and chlorite. The upper part of the core is deposited after 12 500 cal yr bp and mainly composed of illite and kaolinite, with low amounts of smectite and chlorite, such as found in samples from rock outcrops and covering sediments throughout Amery Oasis. The clay composition in the lower section of core Lz1005 suggest that the basin of Lake Terrasovoje was filled by a 150-200 m thickened Nemesis Glacier prior to 12 500 cal yr bp rather than by local ice caps.

Petrological, mineralogical and chemical investigations of marine manganese nodules from the West Pacific revealed the intimate relation between the chemical and mineral compositions and the remarkable preferential partitioning of metal elements in the ferromanganese minerals. The microscopic observations of textures of manganese nodules tell the growth history of manganese nodules and the formation conditions of ferromanganese minerals. Chemical compositions of nodules from Komahashi-Daini Seamount are very similar to those of the nodules from marginal banks and seamounts. Compositional variations in the bulk composition of nodules collected from the same dredge haul are considerably small, suggesting the similarity of the growth history of individual nodules, although the contents of metal elements vary remarkably from layer to layer in a single nodule.

A compilation of chemical analyses of Pacific Ocean nodules using an x-ray fluorescence technique. The equipment used was a General Electric XRD-5 with a tungsten tube. Lithium fluoride was used as the diffraction element in assaying for all elements above calcium in the atomic table and EDDT was used in conjunction with a helium path for all elements with an atomic number less than calcium. Flow counters were used in conjunction with a pulse height analyzer to eliminate x-ray lines of different but integral orders in gathering count data. The stability of the equipment was found to be excellent by the author. The equipment was calibrated by the use of standard ores made from pure oxide forms of the elements in the nodules and carefully mixed in proportion to the amounts of these elements generally found in the manganese nodules. Chemically analyzed standards of the nodules themselves were also used. As a final check, a known amount of the element in question was added to selected samples of the nodules and careful counts were taken on these samples before and after the addition of the extra amount of the element. The method involved the determination and subsequent use of absorption and activation factors for the lines of the various elements. All the absorption and activation factors were carefully determined using the standard ores. The chemically analyzed samples of the nodules by these methods yielded an accuracy to at least three significant figures.

Adsorption of ion, nickel, cobalt, and manganese from ocean water by calcareous sediments, diatomaceous ooze, hydrogenous sediments, and red clay was studied under close to natural conditions using a tracer method. It was found that hydrogenous sediments selectively remove manganese from seawater. This may be associated with formation of chemical compounds between manganese and sediment material. It was also found that nickel, manganese, and iron exist in the ocean in several ionic and neutral forms. Cobalt typically present in only one ionic form Co(2+).

Fe, Mn, Cu, Ni, and Co contents in bottom sediment samples from the Clarion Clipperton fracture zone and Guatemala Basin were studied; maps of their distribution in the upper layer of sediments were prepared. At some stations contents of these elements were also measured in Pleistocene and Oligocene sediments. Elevated contents of five ore elements (except for Zn) were found at the East Pacific Rise and in the Clarion-Clipperton province; and of Mn, Ni, and Cu in the Guatemala basin. Increased zinc contents occur only in sediments of the East Pacific Rise and Guatemala Basin. Enrichment of sediments in these elements results from under¬water hydrothermal activity and high biological productivity.

Over 150 million cubic meter of sand-sized sediment has disappeared from the central region of the San Francisco Bay Coastal System during the last half century. This enormous loss may reflect numerous anthropogenic influences, such as watershed damming, bay-fill development, aggregate mining, and dredging. The reduction in Bay sediment also appears to be linked to a reduction in sediment supply and recent widespread erosion of adjacent beaches, wetlands, and submarine environments. A unique, multi-faceted provenance study was performed to definitively establish the primary sources, sinks, and transport pathways of beach sized-sand in the region, thereby identifying the activities and processes that directly limit supply to the outer coast. This integrative program is based on comprehensive surficial sediment sampling of the San Francisco Bay Coastal System, including the seabed, Bay floor, area beaches, adjacent rock units, and major drainages. Analyses of sample morphometrics and biological composition (e.g., Foraminifera) were then integrated with a suite of tracers including 87Sr/86Sr and 143Nd/144Nd isotopes, rare earth elements, semi-quantitative X-ray diffraction mineralogy, and heavy minerals, and with process-based numerical modeling, in situ current measurements, and bedform asymmetry to robustly determine the provenance of beach-sized sand in the region.

This paper reviews the state of the art in processing and extraction of ocean floor manganese nodules. It briefly reviews the mining sites where the abundant rich nodules occur and also discusses the metal distribution in nodules in view of economical processing and extraction of these metal values. The paper discloses in a detailed manner the physical and chemical characteristics of nodules, including porosity, surface area, water content and the effect of temperature on crystal structure of major constituents of nodules. In the extraction aspect of nodules, the paper reviews two different extraction schemes revealed in the literature, namely hydrometallurgical treatment and pyrometallurgical treatment. The hydrometallurgical treatments include acid leaching, ammonia leaching, leaching with reducing agents and leaching after high temperature pre-treatments such as in sulfating rousting, while the pyrometallurgical processes include smelting, chlorination-vaporization and segregation. The paper also covers metal recovery processes from leach liquor. An economic survey of processing nodules has been made in terms of problems associated with metal-marketing, and impact of metal production from nodules on mineral industries.
