Small-scale shear zones are present in drillcore samples of abyssal peridotites from the Mid-Atlantic ridge at 15°20'N (Ocean Drilling Program Leg 209). The shear zones act as pathways for both evolved melts and hydrothermal fluids. We examined serpentinites directly adjacent to such zones to evaluate chemical changes resulting from melt-rock and fluid-rock interaction and their influence on the mineralogy. Compared to fresh harzburgite and melt-unaffected serpentinites, serpentinites adjacent to melt-bearing veins show a marked enrichment in rare earth elements (REE), strontium and high field strength elements (HFSE) zirconium and niobium. From comparison with published chemical data of variably serpentinized and melt-unaffected harzburgites, one possible interpretation is that interaction with the adjacent melt veins caused the enrichment in HFSE, whereas the REE contents might also be enriched due to hydrothermal processes. Enrichment in alumina during serpentinization is corroborated by reaction path models for interaction of seawater with harzburgite-plagiogranite mixtures. These models explain both increased amounts of alumina in the serpentinizing fluid for increasing amounts of plagiogranitic material mixed with harzburgite, and the absence of brucite from the secondary mineralogy due to elevated silica activity. By destabilizing brucite, nearby melt veins might fundamentally influence the low-temperature alteration behaviour of serpentinites. Although observations and model results are in general agreement, due to absence of any unaltered protolith a quantification of element transport during serpentinization is not straightforward.

The first series of Soviet standard reference samples of composition of ore materials and ocean pelagic sediments has been created. It includes iron-manganese nodules (SDO-4, SDO-5 and SDO-6), ore crusts (SDO-7) diatomaceous ooze (SDO-8), and deep-sea red clays (SDO-9). The standards are intended to serve as a metrologic basis for physical, physicochemical and chemical analyses of iron-manganese minerals and ocean sediments. The standards are provided with certified analyses of rock-forming components and certain trace elements. Certified characteristics are based on statistical analysis of data obtained from an inter-laboratory experiment involving analysis of the standard reference samples by a variety of methods.

The basement of southern Kirwanveggen (western Dronning Maud Land) is formed by a SSW-dipping section consisting of (from SW to NE): migmatic gneisses; granitoid; low-grade/prograde meta-pelites, meta-psammites and meta-basalts (= "Polaris Formation"); ortho-gneiss; quartzite mylonite; Polaris Formation; quartzite mylonite; meta-turbidites. These units are (partly) separated by at least four SSW-dipping, NE to N directed major thrusts. Most probably, this thrust system is of Pan-African age. Towards north, the section is followed by the molasse-like Urfjell Group, deposited later than approx. 550 Ma and earlier than 450 Ma. Similarities with the Pan-African of the Shackleton Range (thrusting, molasse) led to the assumption, that the East/West Gondwana suture runs from the Shackleton Range towards Sor Rondane (eastern Dronning Maud Land) passing southern Kirwanveggen at its south-east.

Manganese nodules from Stations 252 and 281 of the Challenger Expedition, collected in 1875, have recently been discovered in the Redpath Museum. The nodules have been found to be quite typical specimens of two areas in the Central Pacific Ocean except for dehydration and other changes that have taken place during storage. The principal resolvable manganese mineral in nodules from Station 252 proved to be 10 A manganite; there was a very thin surface coating of birnessite. Delta manganite was the only manganese mineral found in nodules from Station 281. Through electron microprobe studies, findings from chemical, optical and x-ray crystallographic work were correlated with the detailed picture of the occurrence and quantities of the different elements within the nodules. In all cases it was found that the iron and manganese had an antithetical relationship, and that nickel and copper were associated with the manganese. Special study was given to a 300-micron-square area in a nodule from Station 252 which included a segregation of 49.39% Mn, 5.31 % Ni, and 1.64% Cu. Crystallization of the manganese phases is thought to have provided a mech¨anism for formation of segregations which were further enriched through chemical scavenger action as long as ocean floor conditions permitted.

This study was aimed at reconstructing a sequence of events in the magmatic and metamorphic evolution of peridotites, gabbroids, and trondhjemites from internal oceanic complexes of the Ashadze and Logachev hydrothermal vent fields. Collections of plutonic rocks from Cruises 22 and 26 of R/V "Professor Logachev", Cruise 41 of R/V "Akademik Mstislav Keldysh", and from the Serpentine Russian-French expedition aboard R/V "Pourquoi pas?" were objects of this study. Data reported here suggest that the internal oceanic complexes of the Ashadze and Logachev fields formed via the same scenario in these two regions of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. On the other hand, an analysis of petrological and geochemical characteristics of the rocks indicated that the internal oceanic complexes of the MAR axial zone between 12°58'N and 14°45'N show pronounced petrological and geochemical heterogeneity manifested in variations in degree of depletion of mantle residues and in Nd isotopic compositions of rocks from the gabbro-peridotite association. Trondhjemites from the Ashadze hydrothermal field can be considered as partial melting products of gabbroids under influence of hydrothermal fluids. It was supposed that presence of trondhjemites in internal oceanic complexes of MAR can be used as a marker for the highest temperature deep-rooted hydrothermal systems. Perhaps, the region of the MAR axial zone, in which petrologically and geochemically contrasting internal oceanic complexes are spatially superimposed, serves as an area for development of large hydrothermal clusters with considerable ore-forming potential.

There has been much recent interest in the origin of silicic magmas at spreading centres away from any possible influence of continental crust. Here we present major and trace element data for 29 glasses (and 55 whole-rocks) sampled from a 40 km segment of the South East Rift in the Manus Basin that span the full compositional continuum from basalt to rhyolite (50-75 wt % SiO2). The glass data are accompanied by Sr-Nd-Pb, O and U-Th-Ra isotope data for selected samples. These overlap the ranges for published data from this part of the Manus Basin. Limited increases in Cl/K ratios with increasing SiO2, La-SiO2 and Yb-SiO2 relationships, and the oxygen isotope data rule out models in which the more silicic lavas result from partial melting of altered oceanic crust or altered oceanic gabbros. Rather, the data form a coherent array that is suggestive of closed-system fractional crystallization and this is well simulated by MELTS models run at 0.2 GPa and QFM (quartz-fayalite-magnetite buffer) with 1 wt % H2O, using a parental magma chosen from the basaltic glasses. Although some assimilation of altered oceanic crust or gabbro cannot be completely ruled out, there is no evidence that this plays an important role in the origin of the silicic lavas. The U-series disequilibria are dominated by 238U and 226Ra excesses that limit the timescale of differentiation to less than a few millennia. Overall, the data point to rapid evolution in relatively small magma lenses located near the base of thick oceanic crust; we speculate that this was coupled with relatively low rates of basaltic recharge. A similar model may be applicable to the generation of silicic magmas elsewhere in the ocean basins.

Mixed terrigenous-pelagic sediments from the Oligocene-lower Miocene interval of Hole 1139A accumulated on the flank of an eroded alkalic volcano, Skiff Bank. In this study, I explore relationships among sediment fluxes, especially of organic carbon and the clay mineral by-products of silicate weathering, and lithologic, tectonic, climatic, and biologic forcing factors. Benthic foraminifers indicate that Skiff Bank had subsided to lower bathyal depths (1000-2000 m) by the Oligocene. Two prominent maxima in noncarbonate concentration at 28 and 22 Ma correspond to peaks in the terrigenous flux; also, high noncarbonate concentrations are associated with larger grain sizes (silt) and higher opal concentrations. These and higher-frequency variations of noncarbonate concentration were probably controlled by glacioeustatic/climatic changes, with higher noncarbonate concentrations caused by increased erosion during glacial lowstands. Around 27 Ma, benthic foraminiferal d18O values decreased 0.7 per mil as the noncarbonate concentration decreased after the 28-Ma maximum. A paucity of clay-sized sediment and clay minerals suggests that physical erosion, by waves and/or ice, predominated under weathering-limited conditions. Low organic carbon concentrations (~0.13 wt%) also suggest a harsh environment and/or poor preservation in coarse (>2 µm) sediments that were extensively bioturbated below the oxygen minimum zone.
