The upper Miocene to Pleistocene sediments recovered at ODP Sites 745 and 746 in the Australian-Antarctic Basin are characterized by cyclic facies changes. Sedimentological investigations of a detailed Quaternary section reveal that facies A is dominated by a high content of siliceous microfossils, a relatively low terrigenous sediment content, an ice-rafted component, low concentrations of fine sediment particles, and a relatively high smectite content. This facies corresponds to interglacial sedimentary conditions. Facies B, in contrast, is characteristic of glacial conditions and is dominated by a large amount of terrigenous material and a smaller opaline component. There is also a prominent ice-rafted component. The microfossils commonly are reworked and broken. The clay mineral assemblages show higher proportions of glacially derived illite and chlorite. A combination of four different processes, attributed to glacial-interglacial cycles, was responsible for the cyclic facies changes during Quaternary time: transport by gravity, ice, and current and changes in primary productivity. Of great importance was the movement of the grounding line of the ice shelves, which directly influenced the intensity of ice rafting and of gravitational sediment transport to the deep sea. The extension of the ice shelves was also responsible for the generation of cold and erosive Antarctic Bottom Water, which controlled the grain-size distribution, particularly of the fine fraction, in the investigated area.

The reconstruction of low-latitude ocean-atmosphere interactions is one of the major issues of (paleo-)environmental studies. The trade winds, extending over 20° to 30° of latitude in both hemispheres, between the subtropical highs and the intertropical convergence zone, are major components of the atmospheric circulation and little is known about their long-term variability on geological time-scales, in particular in the Pacific sector. We present the modern spatial pattern of eolian-derived marine sediments in the eastern equatorial and subtropical Pacific (10°N to 25°S) as a reference data set for the interpretation of SE Pacific paleo-dust records. The terrigenous silt and clay fractions of 75 surface sediment samples have been investigated for their grain-size distribution and clay-mineral compositions, respectively, to identify their provenances and transport agents. Dust delivered to the southeast Pacific from the semi- to hyper-arid areas of Peru and Chile is rather fine-grained (4-8 µm) due to low-level transport within the southeast trade winds. Nevertheless, wind is the dominant transport agent and eolian material is the dominant terrigenous component west of the Peru-Chile Trench south of ~ 5°S. Grain-size distributions alone are insufficient to identify the eolian signal in marine sediments due to authigenic particle formation on the sub-oceanic ridges and abundant volcanic glass around the Galapagos Islands. Together with the clay-mineral compositions of the clay fraction, we have identified the dust lobe extending from the coasts of Peru and Chile onto Galapagos Rise as well as across the equator into the doldrums. Illite is a very useful parameter to identify source areas of dust in this smectite-dominated study area.

A major goal of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 130 was to drill four sites down the northeastern flank of the Ontong Java Plateau to collect a series of continuous sedimentary sequences that would provide a depth transect of Neogene sediments. In particular, the study of the sediments recovered along the depth transect is expected to yield high-resolution stratigraphic, geochemical, and physical properties records across intervals of major paleoceanographic changes by evaluating variations of primary sedimentological and paleoceanographic indicators (e.g., carbonates, isotopes, grain size, microfossil assemblages, etc.). This data report presents the results of highresolution (3-5 Ka sample intervals) analyses of carbonate concentration and bulk sediment grain size at Sites 803-806 for the time interval from 2 Ma to the present.

Sites 1095, 1096, and 1101 were drilled on the continental rise west of the Antarctic Peninsula (Fig. F1) to recover a continuous high-resolution record of Antarctic glaciation. Site 1095 is the subject of a short paper in this volume (Pudsey, 2001, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.178.214.2001), whereas mass accumulation rates at the three sites are described by Wolf-Welling (2001, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.178.223.2001) and ice-rafted debris at Site 1101 is discussed by Cowan (2001, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.178.206.2001) This report documents grain-size data (sand and fine fraction) and the proportion of biogenic silica for the upper 300 m at Site 1095, the upper 250 m at Site 1096, and the whole 220 m at Site 1101.

The Quaternary history of metastable CaCO3 input and preservation within Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) was examined by studying sediments from ODP Holes 818B (745 mbsl) and 817A (1015 mbsl) drilled in the Townsville Trough on the southern slope of the Queensland Plateau. These sites lie within the core of modern AAIW, and near the aragonite saturation depth (~1000 m). Thus, they are well positioned to monitor chemical changes that may have occurred within this watermass during the past 1.6 m.y. The percent of fine aragonite content, percent of fine magnesian calcite content, and percent of whole pteropods (>355 µm) were used to separate the fine aragonite input signal from the CaCO3 preservation signal. Stable d18O and d13C isotopic ratios were determined for the planktonic foraminifer Globigerinoides sacculifer and, in Hole 818B, for the benthic foraminifer Cibicidoides spp. to establish the oxygen isotope stratigraphy and to study the relationship between intermediate and shallow water d13C of Sum CO2 and the relationship between benthic foraminiferal d13C and CaCO3 preservation within intermediate waters of the Townsville Trough. Data were converted from depth to age using oxygen isotope stratigraphy, nannostratigraphy, and foraminiferal biostratigraphy. Several long hiatuses and the absence of magnetostratigraphy did not permit time series analysis. The principal results of the CaCO3 preservation study include the following (1) a general increase in CaCO3 preservation between 0.9 and 1.6 Ma; (2) a CaCO3 dissolution maximum near 0.9 Ma, primarily expressed in the Hole 818B fine aragonite record; (3) an abrupt and permanent increase of fine aragonite content between 0.86 and 0.875 Ma in both Holes 818B and 817A probably reflecting a dramatic increase of fine carbonate sediment production on the Queensland Plateau; (4) an improvement in CaCO3 preservation near 0.87 Ma, which accompanied the increase of sediment input, indicated by the first appearance of whole pteropods in the deeper Hole 817A and a "spike" in the percent whole pteropods in Hole 818B; (5) a period of strong CaCO3 dissolution during the mid-Brunhes Chron from 0.36 to 0.41 Ma; and (6) a complex CaCO3 preservation pattern between 0.36 Ma and the present characterized by a general increase in CaCO3 preservation through time with good preservation during interglacial stages and poor preservation during glacial stages. The long-term aragonite preservation histories for Holes 818B and 817A appear to be similar in general shape, although different in detail, to CaCO3 preservation records from the deep Indian and central equatorial Pacific oceans as well as from intermediate water sites in the Bahamas and the Maldives. All of these areas have experienced CaCO3 dissolution at about 0.9 Ma and during the mid-Brunhes Chron. However, the late Quaternary (0 to 0.36 Ma) glacial to interglacial preservation pattern in Holes 818B and 817A is out of phase with CaCO3 preservation records for sediments deposited in Pacific deep and bottom waters. The sharp increase in bank production and export from the Queensland Plateau and the coincident improvement of CaCO3 preservation between 0.86 and 0.875 Ma may have been synchronous with the initiation of the Great Barrier Reef and roughly coincides with an increase in carbonate accumulation on the Bahama banks, in the western North Atlantic Ocean, and on Mururoa atoll, in the central South Pacific Ocean. The development of these reef systems during the middle Quaternary may be related to the transition in the frequency and amplitude of global sea level change from 41 k.y. low amplitude cycles prior to 0.9 Ma to 100 k.y. high amplitude cycles after 0.73 Ma. Carbon isotopic analyses show that benthic foraminiferal d13C values (Cibicidoides spp.) have been heavier than planktonic foraminiferal d13C values (G. sacculifer) throughout most of the last 0.54 m.y., which may indicate that 13C-enriched intermediate water (AAIW) occupied the Townsville Trough during much of the late Quaternary. Furthermore, both planktonic and benthic foraminiferal d13C values are often observed to be heaviest during interglacial to glacial transitions, and lightest during glacial to interglacial transitions. We suggest that this pattern is the result of changes in the preformed d13C of Sum CO2 of AAIW and may reflect changes in nutrient utilization by primary producers in Antarctic surface waters, changes in the d13C of upwelled Circumpolar Deep Water, or changes in the extent and/or temperature of equilibration between surface water and atmospheric CO2 within the Antarctic Polar Frontal Zone (the source area for AAIW). Finally, the poor correlation between percent of whole pteropods (aragonite preservation) and d13C of Cibicidoides spp. may be the result of a decoupling of d13C from CO2 due to the numerous and complex variables that combine to produce the preformed d13C of AAIW.

According to average grain size parameters (Kd, Kd1) recent sediments from the northern Caspian Sea and the Barents Sea shelf are similar, while sediments from the Norwegian Sea are closer to their counterparts of the World Ocean. Seaward content of subcolloidal (<0.001 mm) size fraction increases against the background of decreasing proportions of coarse- and medium-grained pelite (<0.01 mm) material.

Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 116 cored the distal part of the Bengal Fan at three closely spaced sites (717-719). The recovered sediments consisted dominantly of turbidites that varied in thickness between a few centimeters and 2 m or more. A number of different facies have been identified in the sequence and are described by Stow et al. (1990, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.116.110.1990). Representative examples of these facies types were selected and sampled for grain-size analysis. The results of these analyses are tabulated in this data report.

One hundred and twenty point counts of Oligocene to Recent sands and sandstones from DSDP sites in the Japan and Mariana intraoceanic forearc and backarc basins demonstrate that there is a clear compositional difference between the continentally influenced Japan forearc and backarc sediments, and the totally oceanic Mariana forearc and backarc sediments. Japan forearc sediments average 10 QFL%Q, 0.82 P/F, 2 Framework%Mica, 74 LmLvLst%Lv, and 19 LmLvLst%Lst. In contrast, the Mariana forearc and backarc sediments average 0 QFL%Q, 1.00 P/F, 0 Framework%Mica, 98 LmLvLst%Lv, and 1 LmLvLst%Lst. Sediment compositions in the Japan region are variable. The Honshu forearc sediments average 5 QFL%Q, 0.94 P/F, 1 Framework%Mica, 82 LmLvLst%Lv, and 15 LmLvLst%Lst. The Yamato Basin sediments (DSDP Site 299) average 13 QFL%Q, 0.70 P/F, 3 Framework%Mica, 78 LmLvLst%Lv, and 14 LmLvLst%Lst. The Japan Basin sediments (DSDP Site 301) average 24 QFL%Q, 0.54 P/F, 9 Framework%Mica, 58 LmLvLst%Lv, and 21 LmLvLst%Lst. P/F and Framework%Mica are higher in the Yamato Basin sediments than in the forearc sediments due to an increase in modal potassium content of volcanic rocks from east to west, on the island of Honshu. Site 301 possesses a higher QFL%Q and LmLvLst%Lst, and lower LmLvLst%Lv than Site 299 because it receives sediment from the Asian mainland as well as the island of Honshu. DSDP Site 293 sediments, in the Mariana region, average 0.97 P/F, 1 Framework%Mica, 13 LmLvLst%Lm and 83 LmLvLst%Lv, due to their proximity to the island of Luzon. The remaining Mariana forearc and backarc sediments show a uniform composition.

Sand-silt-clay distribution was determined at Scripps on samples collected at the time the cores were split and described. The sediment classification used here is that of Shepard (1954); sand, silt, and clay boundaries are determined on the basis of the Wentworth (1922) scale. Thus the sand, silt, and clay fractions are composed of particles whose diameters range from 2000 to 62.5 µm, 62.5 to 3.91 µm, and less than 3.91 µm, respectively. This classification is applied regardless of sediment type and origin.

Grain size of 139 unconsolidated sediment samples from seven DSDP sites in the Guaymas Basin and the southeastern tip of the Baja California Peninsula was determined by sieve and pipette techniques. Shepard (1954) classification and Inman (1952) parameters correlation were used for all samples. Sediment texture ranged from sand to silty clay. On the basis of grain-size parameter, the sediments can be divided into three broad groups: (1) very fine sands and coarse silts; (2) medium- to very fine silts; and (3) clays and coarse silts.
