The chronostratigraphy, the calcareous nannofossil biochronology, and the biostratigraphy of the Miocene and Pliocene sediments retrieved during Leg 115 in the equatorial western Indian Ocean are presented and discussed. Most of the zonal boundaries of the standard 1971 zonation of Martini and the 1973 zonation of Bukry are easily recognized in these low-latitude sediments. We also comment on the secondary events that are proposed in the literature to improve the biostratigraphic resolution provided by the standard zonations. The study of calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy and taphonomy of sequences from the Northern Mascarene Plateau area, which was drilled to investigate the Neogene history of carbonate flux and dissolution, indicate that the accumulation of carbonates in this area results from a complex interplay among carbonate bioproductivity, carbonate removal by chemical dissolution and mechanical erosion, and carbonate addition by mass and current transport. In spite of these drawbacks, major changes and trends in carbonate accumulation can be recognized, most of which, if not all, correlate with major steps in the evolution of the Neogene climatic system.

During "Meteor"cruise 1965 the author collected 134 samples of surface sediments from the Iranian part of the Persian Gulf. Benthic Foraminifera populations have been analysed for determining their depth zonation. These data are supposed to allow detailed depth interpretation of Pleistocene sediments found in cores. In addition, the ecological information might be usefull to reconstruct the depositional environment of fossil sediments in similar shallow epicontinental seas. The investigation is published in two parts: the present part 1 contains the catalogue of species with short discussions of taxonomic problems, notes on the distribution within the Persian Gulf and 11 plates, partly with scanning electron micrographs. The results of the statistical analysis are given in data tables which include number of species, percentages of 2 (and 5) ranked species, standing crop and foraminiferal numbers. The author used "species groups" to avoid ambiguities with species requiring additional taxonomic studies. However, species numbers within these units are estimated to yield applicable diversity information. - A total of 52 species and 7 "species groups" were separated, 2 new species were described.

Recovery of an essentially complete upper Maestrichtian/lower Paleocene interval on Maud Rise at 65 °S latitude in the Weddell Sea during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 113 marks the first time that this interval has been cored at these high latitudes. The entire interval was missing at all Falkland Plateau sites drilled during DSDP Legs 36 and 71. Maestrichtian nannofossil assemblages in sediments from Sites 689 and 690, therefore, provide the basis for a needed revision of Maestrichtian coccolith zonation schemes for high southern latitudes. Three zones and two new subzones are described: the uppermost Maestrichtian Nephrolithus frequens Zone, which is subdivided into the Cribrosphaerella daniae Subzone and the underlying N. corystus Subzone, and the Biscutum magnum and B. coronum Zones. A complete calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy based on the proposed scheme is given including a description of individual species abundance, preservation, and stratigraphic distribution. At this site, the southernmost carbonate site yet drilled by DSDP/ODP, it is evident that the Falkland Plateau Nannofossil Biogeographic Province can be extended to the margins of Antarctica. In addition, the biogeographic ranges of many calcareous nannofossils can likewise be extended. Last, we hypothesize that Nephrolithus frequens evolved from N. corystus prior to its dispersal to the lower latitudes where it is an important zonal marker. Three new taxa, Neocrepidolithus watkinsii n. sp., Nephrolithus frequens miniporus emend, n. comb, and Psyktosphaera firthii n. gen., n. sp. are described.

Two sediment cores of 70 and 252 cm length were recovered from Hjort Sø, a small lake on Store Koldewey, Northeast Greenland, and studied with a multidisciplinary approach in order to reconstruct the local environmental history and to test the relevance of proxies for paleoenvironmental information. The basal sediments from the longer core are dominated by clastic matter, which was likely deposited during deglaciation of the lake basin. These clastic sediments are overlain by gyttja, which is also present throughout the shorter core. AMS radiocarbon dating was conducted on plant macrofossils of 11 samples from the gyttja in both cores. A reliable chronology was established for both cores, which dated the onset of organic accumulation at 9,500 cal. year BP. The Holocene temperature development, with an early to mid Holocene thermal maximum, is best reflected in the grain-size composition. Nutrient availability was apparently low during the early Holocene and led to low productivity in the lake and its vicinity. From ca. 7,000 cal. year BP, productivity in the lake increased significantly, probably induced by external nutrient input from goose excrements. From this time, micro- and macrofossil remains reflect relatively well the climate history of East Greenland, with a cooling during the middle Holocene, the medieval warming, and the Little Ice Age. The amount of organic matter in the sequence seems to be more affected by lake ice cover or by nutrient supply from the catchment than by temperature changes. The record from Hjort Sø thus reveals the difficulties in interpreting sedimentary records from high arctic regions.

Reworked shallow-water larger and deep-water calcareous benthic foraminifers were recovered from foraminiferal packstones and nannofossil chalks in Hole 802A. The autochthonous zeolitic pelagic claystone is characterized by late Campanian abyssal agglutinated foraminifers that allow correlation with the North Atlantic and the adjacent Pigafetta Basin. Assemblages of DendrophryalRhizammina in graded beds within the zeolitic claystone indicate reworking through entrainment in the flocculent E layer of turbidites, rather than recolonization following a biosiliceous event. Background sedimentation of the claystone took place below the carbonate compensation depth. The nannofossil chalk contains reworked lower bathyal to abyssal calcareous foraminifers of late Paleocene to early Miocene age. The topmost bed of the nannofossil chalk unit commences with an algal foraminiferal packstone containing Lepidocyclina sumatrensis, Heterostegina borneensis, Amphistegina hauerina, Asterigerina marshallana, and A. tentoria, which indicate that the source area was a shallow-water reef and allow the bed to be dated as early Miocene. The absence of obviously younger planktonic microfossils in the graded bed indicates that the resedimentation event was generally contemporaneous with original deposition and took place during an early Miocene global sea-level highstand. An early Miocene shallow-water assemblage is also seen in the graded beds at the base of a volcaniclastic turbidite sequence overlying the nannofossil chalks. Resedimentation of this unit was associated with volcanic activity some distance away.

Deep-sea benthic foraminiferal faunas were studied from Sites 608 (depth 3534 m, 42°50'N, 23°05'W) and 610 (depth 2427 m, 53°13'N, 18°53'W). The sampling interval corresponded to 0.1 to 0.5 m.y. at Site 608 and in the sections of Site 610 from which core recovery was continuous. First and last appearances of benthic foraminiferal taxa are generally not coeval at the two sites, although the faunal patterns are similar and many species occur at both sites. Major periods of changes in the benthic faunas, as indicated by the numbers of first and last appearances and changes in relative abundances, occurred in the early Miocene (19.2-17 Ma), the middle Miocene (15.5-13.5 Ma), the late Miocene (7-5.5 Ma), and the Pliocene-Pleistocene (3.5-0.7 Ma). A period of minor changes in the middle to late Miocene (10-9 Ma) was recognized at Site 608 only. These periods of faunal changes can be correlated with periods of paleoceanographic changes: there was a period of sluggish circulation in the northeastern North Atlantic from 19.2 to 17 Ma, and the deep waters of the oceans probably cooled between 15.5 and 13.5 Ma, as indicated by an increase in delta18O values in benthic foraminiferal tests. The period between 10 and 9 Ma was probably characterized by relatively vigorous bottom-water circulation in the northeastern Atlantic, as indicated by the presence of a widespread reflector. The faunal change at 7 to 5.5 Ma corresponds in time with a worldwide change in delta13C values, and with the Messinian closing of the Mediterranean. The last and largest faunal changes correspond in time with the onset and intensification of Northern Hemisphere glaciation.

The Early Cretaceous series of Site 549 have been analyzed from both an ecological and a chronostratigraphical viewpoint. Lithology and microfaunal assemblages allow the division of these deposits into two parts. The lower part extends from the lower Barremian to the basal upper Barremian and possibly down into the upper Hauterivian. Three foraminiferal associations suggest an orderly evolution from a low-energy, littoral environment, in which continental influences dominated, to progressively more open marine conditions. A dolosparite bed (which has not yet been dated) separates these synrift deposits from lower to basal middle Albian postrift sediments that developed in a pelagic bathyal environment on the middle to nearby lower continental slope.

Cretaceous radiolarians were recovered from subantarctic Atlantic calcareous submarine deposits from two of the seven sites drilled during ODP Leg 114 in 1987. Fairly well-preserved radiolarian assemblages were found in Hole 698A samples from the Northeast Georgia Rise, whereas assemblages with fair to good preservation were observed from Hole 700B in the East Georgia Basin. The assemblage compositions from both sites are rather low in diversity and are characterized by the dominance of Protoamphipyndax, Dictyomitra, and Stichomitra species, but lack zonal markers recognized from the midlatitude to low-latitude region. Assignment of a Maestrichtian age is based on co-occurring calcareous microfossils. This report constitutes the second such occurrence from the Atlantic sector of the Antarctic Ocean subsequent to the analysis of ODP Leg 113 materials from the Weddell Sea.

Marine diatoms are the primary biostratigraphical and paleoenvironmental tool for interpreting the upper Palaeogene and lower Neogene strata recovered during the second drilling season of the Cape Roberts Project at site CRP-2 in the western Ross Sea, Antarctica. Silicoflagellates, ebridians, and a chrysophyte cyst provide supporting biostratigraphical information. More than 100 dominantly planktic diatom taxa are recognised. Of these, more than 30 are treated informally, pending SEM examination and formal description. Many other taxa are noted only to generic level. Lower Oligocene (c. 31 Ma) through lower Miocene (c. 18.5 Ma) diatoms occur from 28 mbsf down to 565 mbsf. Below this level, to the bottom of the hole at 624.15 mbsf, diatom assemblages are poorly-preserved and many samples are barren. A biostratigraphic zonal framework, consisting of ten diatom zones, is proposed for the Antarctic continental shelf. Ages inferred from the diatom biostratigraphy correspond well with geochronological data from argon dating of volcanic materials and strontium dating of calcareous macrofossils, as well as nannofossil biochronological datums. The biochronostratigraphical record from CRP-2/2A provides an important record of diatom events and mid-Cenozoic environmental changes in the Antarctic neritic zone.

Deep-sea cores recovered at Sites 842 and 843 on Leg 136 of the Ocean Drilling Program have yielded assemblages of Quaternary, Eocene, and Cretaceous radiolarians from the Hawaiian Arch region of the northern equatorial Pacific Ocean. Reddish-brown clays from Hole 842A (0-9.6 mbsf), Hole 842B (0-6.3 mbsf), and Hole 843C (0-4.2 mbsf) contain abundant and diverse assemblages of Quaternary radiolarians consisting of more than 80 species typical of the equatorial Pacific region. Quaternary radiolarians at these sites are assignable to the Quaternary Collosphaera tuberosa Interval Zone and Amphirhopalum ypsilon Interval Zone. The boundary between these zones cannot be determined precisely because of the rarity of zonal markers below surface sediments. Correlations have been made between radiolarian occurrences and magnetostratigraphic events elsewhere in the Pacific Ocean, but similar correlations are difficult at Sites 842 and 843 because of poor subsurface preservation. Chert samples collected from intervals in Cores 842B-10X and 842C-1W have yielded radiolarian ages of lower Cenomanian to Santonian and lower Cenomanian, respectively. Radiolarian assemblages in volcanic sand layers in Sections 6 and 7 of Core 842A-1H (7.5-9.6 mbsf) contain lower and middle Eocene radiolarians admixed with abundant Quaternary faunas. Reworked Eocene radiolarians appear to be restricted to thin layers of volcanic sands within the cores, suggesting deposition by turbidity currents.

Among the groups of oceanic microfossils, only Radiolaria occur in abundances and preservation states sufficient to provide biostratigraphic control for restricted intervals within sediments recovered in Hole 1223A. The distribution of these microfossils has been divided into four major intervals, A-D. Radiolaria distribution Interval A occupies the depth range 0-3.0 meters below seafloor (mbsf), where the abundance of specimens is very low and preservation is poor. Radiolaria distribution Interval B occupies the depth range 3.02-7.1 mbsf. Radiolaria in Interval B are locally rare to abundant and well preserved, and assemblages range in age from pure early Eocene to early Eocene admixed with late Neogene taxa. Radiolaria distribution Interval C occupies the depth range 7.1-36.99 mbsf and is characterized by sediments either barren of microfossils or containing extremely rare early Eocene specimens. Radiolaria distribution Interval D occupies the depth range 36.99-38.7 mbsf (base of the recovered sedimentary section), where early Eocene Radiolaria are present in rare to common frequencies, but opal-A to opal-CT recrystallization has degraded the preservation state. The late Neogene assemblage of Radiolaria distribution Interval B is dated at 1.55-2.0 Ma, based on occurrences of Eucyrtidium matuyamai, Lamprocyclas heteroporos, and Theocorythium trachelium trachelium. The early Eocene assemblage of Radiolaria distribution Intervals B and D is somewhat problematically assigned to the Buryella clinata Zone.
