Calcareous nannofossils are abundant in the Paleogene sediments recovered during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 120. Although no continuous Paleogene section was obtained, Sites 747 through 751 complemented each other so as to provide a virtually complete composite stratigraphic section. The calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy at Sites 747, 748, and 749 is discussed. Correlation of calcareous nannofossil biozones and magnetozones at these sites suggests some diachrony with low-latitude areas, as well as on a regional basis. Changes in calcareous nannofossil diversity throughout the Paleogene are analyzed and interpreted as reflecting major paleoclimatic events.

Among the five sites drilled during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 130, two deep holes (8O3D and 807C) penetrated Cretaceous sediments overlying the basaltic pillows, flows, and possibly basement rocks. Abundant, poorly preserved radiolarians with limited diversity were recovered from a few horizons within the sediments proximal to the basalt. At Site 803, three thin layers of radiolarites interbedded with claystone and clayey siltstone yielded radiolarian assemblages of late Albian age. At Site 807, several layers of radiolarian siltstones were recovered proximal to the basalt. Among them the most significant radiolarian assemblage is an Aptian fauna, located approximately 7 m above the basaltic flows. The Aptian radiolarian age for Site 807 is at least in accord with those suggested by planktonic foraminifer and paleomagnetic evidence. These Cretaceous radiolarians are the oldest assemblages recorded from the Ontong Java Plateau region.

An expanded and largely complete upper Paleocene to upper Eocene section was recovered from the pelagic cap overlying Allison Guyot, Mid-Pacific Mountains at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 865 (18°26'N, 179°33'W; paleodepth 1300-1500 m). Reconstructions show that the site was within a few degrees of the equator during the Paleogene. Because no other Paleogene sections have been recovered in the Pacific Ocean at such a low latitude, Site 865 provides a unique record of equatorial Pacific paleoceanography. Detailed stable isotopic investigations were conducted on three planktonic foraminiferal taxa (species of Acarinina, Morozovella, and Subbotina). We studied benthic foraminiferal isotopes at much lower resolution on species of Cibicidoides and Lenticulina, Nuttallides truempyi and Gavelinella beccariiformis, because of their exceptional rarity. The d18O and d13C stratigraphies from Site 865 are generally similar to those derived from other Paleocene and Eocene sections. The planktonic foraminiferal records at Site 865, however, include significantly less short-term, single-sample variability than those from higher-latitude sites, indicating that this tropical, oligotrophic location had a comparatively stable water column structure with a deep mixed layer and less seasonal variability. Low-amplitude (0.1-0.8 per mil) oscillations on timescales of 250,000 to 300,000 years correlate between the d13C records of all planktonic taxa and may represent fluctuations in the mixing intensity of surface waters. Peak sea surface temperatures of 24°-25°C occurred in the earliest Eocene, followed by a rapid cooling of 3-6°C in the late early Eocene. Temperatures remained cool and stable through the middle Eocene. In the late Eocene, surface water temperatures decreased further. Vertical temperature gradients decreased dramatically in the late Paleocene and were relatively constant through much of the Eocene but increased markedly in the late Eocene. Intermediate waters warmed through the late Paleocene, reaching a maximum temperature of 10°C in the early Eocene. Cooling in the middle and late Eocene paralleled that of surface waters, with latest Eocene temperatures below 5°C. Extinction patterns of benthic foraminifera in the latest Paleocene were similar to those observed at other Pacific sites and were coeval with a short-term, very rapid negative excursion in d13C values in planktonic and benthic taxa as at other sites. During this excursion, benthic foraminiferal d18O values decreased markedly, indicating warming of 4 to 6°C for tropical intermediate waters, while planktonic taxa show slight warming (1°C) followed by 2°C of cooling. Convergence of d18O values of planktonic and benthic foraminifera suggests that thermal gradients in the water column in this tropical location collapsed during the excursion. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that equatorial Pacific surface waters were a potential source of warm, higher salinity waters which filled portions of the deep ocean in the latest Paleocene. Oxygen isotopic data indicate that equator to high southern latitude sea surface thermal gradients decreased to as little as 4°C at the peak of the excursion, suggesting some fundamental change in global heat transport.

Reworked shallow-water larger and deep-water calcareous benthic foraminifers were recovered from foraminiferal packstones and nannofossil chalks in Hole 802A. The autochthonous zeolitic pelagic claystone is characterized by late Campanian abyssal agglutinated foraminifers that allow correlation with the North Atlantic and the adjacent Pigafetta Basin. Assemblages of DendrophryalRhizammina in graded beds within the zeolitic claystone indicate reworking through entrainment in the flocculent E layer of turbidites, rather than recolonization following a biosiliceous event. Background sedimentation of the claystone took place below the carbonate compensation depth. The nannofossil chalk contains reworked lower bathyal to abyssal calcareous foraminifers of late Paleocene to early Miocene age. The topmost bed of the nannofossil chalk unit commences with an algal foraminiferal packstone containing Lepidocyclina sumatrensis, Heterostegina borneensis, Amphistegina hauerina, Asterigerina marshallana, and A. tentoria, which indicate that the source area was a shallow-water reef and allow the bed to be dated as early Miocene. The absence of obviously younger planktonic microfossils in the graded bed indicates that the resedimentation event was generally contemporaneous with original deposition and took place during an early Miocene global sea-level highstand. An early Miocene shallow-water assemblage is also seen in the graded beds at the base of a volcaniclastic turbidite sequence overlying the nannofossil chalks. Resedimentation of this unit was associated with volcanic activity some distance away.

About 80 species of spores and pollen grains were recorded during detailed palynological investigations of selected Lower Cretaceous sections from Holes 638B and 638C and the bottom of Hole 641C. Most of them are long-ranging taxa with worldwide distribution. However, on the Iberian margin and in the southern European basins, Trilobosporites canadensis, Trilobosporites bernissartensis, Parvisaccites amplus, Foveosporites subtriangularis, and Ephedripites multicostatus seem to be index species of the Valanginian to late Aptian interval. Clavatipollenites was not recovered in the Barremian marginal marine sediments.

The dinoflagellate cyst assemblages in 42 samples collected from Sites 638 and 639 were analyzed. All samples from Site 639 are barren; relatively poor assemblages occur in samples from Site 638. The distribution of 61 dinoflagellate cyst taxa identified in samples from Holes 638B and 638C are tabulated. The assemblages from Site 638 are comparable to those of Tethyian stratotypes and from neighboring areas, which permits age determinations and correlations between Holes 638B and 638C. The interval from Cores 103-638C-14R to 103-638C-1R is late Berriasian through Valanginian in age. In Hole 638B, the interval from Core 103-638B-43R to Section 103-638B-23R-2 is dated as early Valanginian through middle Barremian. Sections 103-638B-21R-2 and 103-638B-21R-1 are late Aptian in age. Taxonomic remarks are made about some species; a new dinoflagellate cyst Heterosphaeridiuml galiciae is described.
