Life-cycle characteristics of the free-swimming lysianassoid amphipod Cyclocaris guilelmi were investigated and compared to those of other regularly appearing amphipods in the Arctic deep-sea community. In this context we analysed time-series data of meso- and bathypelagic amphipods collected as swimmers in moored sediment traps from 2004 to 2008 at the deep-sea long-term observatory HAUSGARTEN (79°N/4°E) in the eastern Fram Strait, Arctic Ocean. Six mesopelagic and three bathypelagic deep-sea amphipod species regularly occurred in the traps. The lysianassoid C. guilelmi showed a stable interannual population size and seasonal peaks in its occurrence from August to February during the five-year sampling period. The investigation of its population structure and reproduction ecology indicated year-round breeding behavior of this species. Up to 4 cohorts consisting mainly of juvenile and female C. guilelmi were observed. We conclude that C. guilelmi plays an important role within the Arctic amphipod deep water community.

1. Great Meteor Seamount (GMS) is a very large (24,000 km**3) guyot with a flat summit plateau at 330-275 m; it has a volcanic core, capped by 150-600 m of post-Middle-Miocene carbonate and pyroclastic rocks, and is covered by bioclastic sands. The much smaller Josephine Seamount (JS, summit 170- 500 m w. d.) consists mainly of basalt which is only locally covered by limestones and bioclastic sands. 2. The bioclastic sands are almost free of terrigenous components, and are well sorted, unimodal medium sands. (1) "Recent pelagic sands" are typical of water depths > 600 m (JS) or > 1000 m (GMS). (2) "Sands of mixed relict-recent origin" (10-40% relict) and (3) "relict sands" (> 40% relict) are highly reworked, coarse lag deposits from the upper flanks and summit tops in which recent constituents are mixed with Pleistocene or older relict material. 3. From the carbonate rocks of both seamounts, 12 "microfacies" (MF-)types were distinguished. The 4 major types are: (1) Bio(pel)sparites (MF 1) occur on the summit plateaus and consist of magnesian calcite cementing small pellets and either redeposited planktonic bioclasts or mixed benthonic-planktonic skeletal debris ; (2) Porous biomicrites (MF 2) are typical of the marginal parts of the summit plateaus and contain mostly planktonic foraminifera (and pteropods), sometimes with redeposited bioclasts and/or coated grains; (3) Dense, ferruginous coralline-algal biomicrudites with Amphistegina sp. (MF 3.1), or with tuffaceous components (MF 3.2); (4) Dense, pelagic foraminiferal nannomicrite (MF 4) with scattered siderite rhombs. Corresponding to the proportion and mineralogical composition of the bioclasts and of the (Mgcalcitic) peloids, micrite, and cement, magnesian calcite (13-17 mol-% MgCO3) is much more abundant than low-Mg calcite and aragonite in rock types (1) and (2). Type (3) contains an "intermediate" Mg-calcite (7-9 mol-X), possibly due to an original Mg deficiency or to partial exsolution of Mg during diagenesis. The nannomicrite (4) consists of low-Mg calcite only. 4. Three textural types of volcanic and associated gyroclastic rocks were distinguished: (1) holohyaline, rapidly chilled and granulated lava flows and tuffs (palagonite tuff breccia and hyaloclastic top breccia); (2) tachylitic basalts (less rapidly chilled; with opaque glass); and (3) "slowly" crystallized, holocrystalline alkali olivine basalts. The carbonate in most mixed pyroclastic-carbonate sediments at the basalt contact is of "post-eruptive" origin (micritic crusts etc.); "pre-eruptive" limestone is recrystallized or altered at the basalt contact. A deuteric (?hydrothermal) "mineralX", filling vesicles in basalt and cementing pyroclastic breccias is described for the first time. 5. Origin and development of GMS andJS: From its origin, some 85 m. y. ago, the volcano of GMS remained active until about 10 m. y. B. P. with an average lava discharge of 320 km**3/m. y. The volcanic origin of JS is much younger (?Middle Tertiary), but the volcanic activity ended also about 9 m. y. ago. During L a t e Miocene to Pliocene times both volcanoes were eroded (wave-rounded cobbles). The oldest pyroclastics and carbonates (MF 3.1, 3.2) were originally deposited in shallow-water (?algal reef hardground). The Plio (-Pleisto) cene foraminiferal nannomicrites (MF 4) suggest a meso- to bathypelagic environment along the flanks of GMS. During the Quaternary (?Pleistocene) bioclastic sands were deposited in water depths beyond wave base on the summit tops, repeatedly reworked, and lithified into loosely consolidated biopelsparites and biomicrites (MF 1 and 2; Fig. 15). Intermediate steps were a first intragranular filling by micrite, reworking, oncoidal coating, weak consolidation with Mg-calcite cemented "peloids" in intergranular voids and local compaction of the peloids into cryptocrystalline micrite with interlocking Mg-calcite crystals up to 4p. The submarine lithification process was frequently interrupted by long intervals of nondeposition, dissolution, boring, and later infilling. The limestones were probably never subaerially exposed. Presently, the carbonate rocks undergo biogenic incrustation and partial dissolution into bioclastic sands. The irregular distribution pattern of the sands reflects (a) the patchy distribution of living benthonic organisms, (b) the steady rain of planktonic organism onto the seamount top, (c) the composition of disintegrating subrecent limestones, and (d) the intensity of winnowing and reworking bottom current

New K-Ar datings of Meso-Cenozoic volcanites from the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk were obtained. They enabled to reason age of different volcanic complexes. Basalts from volcanic edifices of the Sea of Japan Basin were determined as Middle Miocene - Pliocene (13.1-4.5 Ma) in age, which correlates well with geological evolution of the Sea of Japan. New datings for basalts from the continental slope of the South Primorye (11.1 Ma) confirm their age being similar to volcanites from Neogene basalt plateaus of the South Primorye; they are very similar not only in age but also in mineral and chemical compositions. Datings for rocks from the andesite series of the Northern Yamato Rise (24.7, 21.5 Ma) show that they are coeval with volcanites of the trachyandesite complex; this allows to combine them into one Oligocene - Early Miocene complex. In the Sea of Okhotsk datings of volcanite samples from three complexes were obtained: Cretaceous, Paleogene, and Pliocene-Pleistocene. Cretaceous magmatic rocks make part of basements of large rises in the Sea of Okhotsk, and Paleogene and Pliocene - Pleistocene complexes illustrate stages of Cenozoic tectono-magmatic activation of the region.

Sediments from holes drilled at 11 sites in the northern Gulf of Mexico during Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 96 were analyzed for calcareous nannofossil content. All sediments recovered are Holocene and late Pleistocene in age and are within the Emiliania huxleyi Zone. The datum level represented by the lowest stratigraphic occurrence of dominant E. huxleyi occurs at two sites (Sites 615 and 619) and can be dated at approximately 84,000 yr. ago at Site 619. Reworked Cretaceous nannofossils are generally common or abundant and dominate the floral assemblages of the late Wisconsin glacial sediments. When present, indigenous late Quaternary species are rare or few in abundance. Slight increases in the contemporaneous Quaternary component of the floral assemblages can be documented by the use of a calculated in s/fu/reworked ratio. This ratio, based on the relative abundances of the indigenous Quaternary taxa and reworked taxa, shows potential both for local correlations between drill sites and for correlation with glacio-eustatic fluctuations during the late Pleistocene.

The geological history of Filchnerfjella and surrounding areas (2°E to 8°E) in central Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica, is constructed from metamorphic and igneous petrology, and structural investigations. The geology of Filchner-fjella consists mainly of metamorphic rocks accompanied by intrusive rocks. Two stages of metamorphism can be recognized in this area. The earlier stage metamorphism is defined as a porphyroblast stage (garnet, hornblende, and sillimanite stable), and the later one is recognized as a symplectic stage (orthopyroxene and cordieritestable). Taking metamorphic textures and geothermobarometries into account, the rocks experienced an early high-P/medium-T followed by a low-P and high-T stage. Partial melting took place during the low-P/high-T stage, because probable melt of leucocratic gneiss contains cordierite. The field relationships and petrography of the syenite at Filchnerfjella are similar to those of post-tectonic plutons from central Dronning Maud Land, and most of the post-tectonic intrusive rocks have within-plate geochemical features. The structural history in Filchnerfjella and surrounding areas can be divided into the Pan-African stage and the Meso to Cenozoic stage that relates to the break-up of Gondwana.

The relationship between mesoscale hydrodynamics and the distribution of large particulate matter (LPM, particles larger than 200 ?m) in the first 1000 m of the Western Mediterranean basin was studied with a microprocessor-driven CTD-video package, the Underwater Video Profiler (UVP). Observations made during the last decade showed that, in late spring and summer, LPM concentration was high in the coastal part of the Western Mediterranean basin at the shelf break and near the continental slope (computed maximum: 149 ?g C/l between 0 and 100 m near the Spanish coast of the Gibraltar Strait). LPM concentration decreased further offshore into the central Mediterranean Sea where, below 100 m, it remained uniformly low, ranging from 2 to 4 ?g C/l. However, a strong variability was observed in the different mesoscale structures such as the Almeria-Oran jet in the Alboran Sea or the Algerian eddies. LPM concentration was up to one order of magnitude higher in fronts and eddies than in the adjacent oligotrophic Mediterranean waters (i.e. 35 vs. 8 ?g C/l in the Alboran Sea or 16 vs. 3 ?g C/l in a small shear cyclonic eddy). Our observations suggest that LPM spatial heterogeneity generated by the upper layer mesoscale hydrodynamics extends into deeper layers. Consequently, the superficial mesoscale dynamics may significantly contribute to the biogeochemical cycling between the upper and meso-pelagic layers.

A two year record of downward particle flux was obtained with moored sediment traps at several depths of the water column in two regions characterized by different primary production levels (mesotrophic and oligotrophic) of the eastern subtropical North Atlantic Ocean in the framework of the EUMELI program. Settling particles were collected with multisample conical sediment-traps moored at 1000 and 2500 depths in the water column. Time-series samples were obtained between February 1991 and November 1992. During this time, sampling intervals varied from 8 to 10 d and were synchronized at all depths and also between the oligotrophic and mesotrophic moorings. Sediment-trap sampling procedures were consistent with JGOF and described elsewhere. The data shown here are mass, particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate inorganic carbon (PIC), coccolithophore, opal, and lithogenic downward fluxes obtained during the entire sediment-trap deployments at both sites.

The majority of global ocean production and total export production is attributed to oligotrophic oceanic regions due to their vast regional expanse. However, energy transfers, food-web structures and trophic relationships in these areas remain largely unknown. Regional and vertical inter- and intra-specific differences in trophic interactions and dietary preferences of calanoid copepods were investigated in four different regions in the open eastern Atlantic Ocean (38°N to 21°S) in October/November 2012 using a combination of fatty acid (FA) and stable isotope (SI) analyses. Mean carnivory indices (CI) based on FA trophic markers generally agreed with trophic positions (TP) derived from d15N analysis. Most copepods were classified as omnivorous (CI ~0.5, TP 1.8 to ~2.5) or carnivorous (CI >=0.7, TP >=2.9). Herbivorous copepods showed typical CIs of <=0.3. Geographical differences in d15N values of epi- (200-0 m) to mesopelagic (1000-200 m) copepods reflected corresponding spatial differences in baseline d15N of particulate organic matter from the upper 100 m. In contrast, species restricted to lower meso- and bathypelagic (2000-1000 m) layers did not show this regional trend. FA compositions were species-specific without distinct intra-specific vertical or spatial variations. Differences were only observed in the southernmost region influenced by the highly productive Benguela Current. Apparently, food availability and dietary composition were widely homogeneous throughout the oligotrophic oceanic regions of the tropical and subtropical Atlantic. Four major species clusters were identified by principal component analysis based on FA compositions. Vertically migrating species clustered with epi- to mesopelagic, non-migrating species, of which only Neocalanus gracilis was moderately enriched in lipids with 16% of dry mass (DM) and stored wax esters (WE) with 37% of total lipid (TL). All other species of this cluster had low lipid contents (< 10% DM) without WE. Of these, the tropical epipelagic Undinula vulgaris showed highest portions of bacterial markers. Rhincalanus cornutus, R. nasutus and Calanoides carinatus formed three separate clusters with species-specific lipid profiles, high lipid contents (>=41% DM), mainly accumulated as WE (>=79% TL). C. carinatus and R. nasutus were primarily herbivorous with almost no bacterial input. Despite deviating feeding strategies, R. nasutus clustered with deep-dwelling, carnivorous species, which had high amounts of lipids (>=37% DM) and WE (>=54% TL). Tropical and subtropical calanoid copepods exhibited a wide variety of life strategies, characterized by specialized feeding. This allows them, together with vertical habitat partitioning, to maintain high abundance and diversity in tropical oligotrophic open oceans, where they play an essential role in the energy flux and carbon cycling.

Oxygen concentration and rate of change of oxygen were measured using the Unisense Oxygen Microsensor System. Water from different depth was taken from CTD attached niskin bottle. Measurements were conducted in 2 ml vials provided by Unisense and lasted for a minimum of two minutes after a stable rate was achieved. The sampling interval was 6 seconds. Transport containers, tubes and vials for measurements were covered with light proof black foil for dark-measurements. Measurements labeled "unfiltered" were passed through a 200 µm sieve in order to remove potential biases stemming from individual meso-zooplankton. Measurements labeled "filtered" were passed through a 0.8 µm polycarbonate filter placed on top of a wetted GF/F filter.
