We compare total and biogenic particle fluxes and stable nitrogen isotope ratios (d15N) at three mooring sites along a productivity gradient in the Canary Islands region with surface sediment accumulation rates and sedimentary d15N. Higher particle fluxes and sediment accumulation rates, and lower d15N were observed in the upwelling influenced eastern boundary region (EBC) compared to the oligotrophic sites north of Gran Canaria [European Station for Time-Series in the Ocean, Canary Islands (ESTOC]] and north of La Palma (LP). The impact of organic matter degradation and lateral particle advection on sediment accumulation was quantified with respect to the multi-year flux record at the ESTOC. Remineralisation of organic matter in the water column and at the sediment surface resulted in an organic carbon preservation of about 0.8% and total nitrogen preservation of about 0.4% of the estimated export production. Higher total and carbonate fluxes and accumulation rates in the lower traps and surface sediment compared to the upper traps indicated that at least 50% of the particulate matter at the ESTOC was derived from allochthonous sources. Low d15N values in the lower traps of the ESTOC and LP point to a source region influenced by coastal upwelling. We conclude from this study that the reconstruction of export production or nutrient regimes from sedimentary records in regions with strong productivity gradients might be biased due to the mixture of particles originating from autochthonous and allochthonous sources. This could result in an imprint of high productivity signatures on sedimentation processes in oligotrophic regions.

Complex investigations of recent and ancient Black Sea sediments from the outer shelf, continental slope, and deep-water basin of the Russian Black Sea sector have been carried out. Samples were collected during Cruise 100 of R/V Professor Shtokman organized by the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology (March 2009) and expedition of UZHMORGEO (summer 2006). Rates of the main anaerobic processes during diagenesis (sulfate reduction, dark CO2 assimilation, methanogenesis, and methane oxidation) were studied for the first time in sediment cores of the studied area. Two peaks in the rate of microbial processes and two sources of these processes were identified: the upper peak near the water-sediment contact is related to solar energy (OM substrate of the water column) and the lower peak at the base of ancient Black Sea sediments with high(>1 mmol) methane concentration related to energy of anaerobic methane oxidation. New labile OM formed during this process is utilized by other groups of microorganisms. According to experimental data, daily rate of anaerobic methane oxidation is many times higher than that of methanogenesis, which unambiguously indicates migration nature of the main part of methane.

Distribution, accumulation and diagenesis of surficial sediments in coastal and continental shelf systems follow complex chains of localized processes and form deposits of great spatial variability. Given the environmental and economic relevance of ocean margins, there is growing need for innovative geophysical exploration methods to characterize seafloor sediments by more than acoustic properties. A newly conceptualized benthic profiling and data processing approach based on controlled source electromagnetic (CSEM) imaging permits to coevally quantify the magnetic susceptibility and the electric conductivity of shallow marine deposits. The two physical properties differ fundamentally insofar as magnetic susceptibility mostly assesses solid particle characteristics such as terrigenous or iron mineral content, redox state and contamination level, while electric conductivity primarily relates to the fluid-filled pore space and detects salinity, porosity and grain-size variations. We develop and validate a layered half-space inversion algorithm for submarine multifrequency CSEM with concentric sensor configuration. Guided by results of modeling, we modified a commercial land CSEM sensor for submarine application, which was mounted into a nonconductive and nonmagnetic bottom-towed sled. This benthic EM profiler Neridis II achieves 25 soundings/second at 3-4 knots over continuous profiles of up to hundred kilometers. Magnetic susceptibility is determined from the 75 Hz in-phase response (90% signal originates from the top 50 cm), while electric conductivity is derived from the 5 kHz out-of-phase (quadrature) component (90% signal from the top 92 cm). Exemplary survey data from the north-west Iberian margin underline the excellent sensitivity, functionality and robustness of the system in littoral (~0-50 m) and neritic (~50-300 m) environments. Susceptibility vs. porosity cross-plots successfully identify known lithofacies units and their transitions. All presently available data indicate an eminent potential of CSEM profiling for assessing the complex distribution of shallow marine surficial sediments and for revealing climatic, hydrodynamic, diagenetic and anthropogenic factors governing their formation.

The spatial variability of biomass and stable isotopes in plankton size fractions in the upper 200 m was studied in a high spatial resolution transect along 24°N from Canary Islands to Florida (January - March 2011) during Leg 8 of the Malaspina-2010 expedition (http://www.expedicionmalaspina.es) to determine nitrogen and carbon sources. Plankton samples were collected by vertical tows of a microplankton net (40 mm mesh size) and a mesoplankton net (200 mm mesh size) through the upper 200 m of the water column. Sampling was between 10:00 and 16:00 h GMT. Plankton was separated into five size fractions (40 - 200, 200 - 500, 500 - 1000, 1000 - 2000 and > 2000 mm) by gentle filtration of the samples by a graded series of nylon sieves (2000, 1000, 500, 200 and 40 mm). Large gelatinous organisms were removed before filtration. Aliquots for each size fraction were collected on pre-weighed glass-fibre filters, dried (60°C, 48 h) and stored in a desiccator before determination of biomass (dry weight), carbon and nitrogen content and natural abundance of stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes ashore. Vertical advection of waters predominated in lateral zones while the central Atlantic (30-70°W) was characterized by a strong stratification and oligotrophic surface waters. Plankton biomass was low in the central zone and high in both eastern and western sides, with most of the variability due to either large (>2000 µm) and small plankton (<500 µm). Carbon isotopes reflected mainly the advection the deep water in lateral zones. Stable nitrogen isotopes showed a nearly symmetrical spatial distribution in all fractions, with the lowest values (delta15N <1per mill) in the central zone, and were inversely correlated to carbon stable isotopes (delta13C) and to the abundance of the nitrogen-fixer Trichodesmium. Diazotrophy was estimated to account for >50% of organic nitrogen in the central zone, and even >30% in eastern and western zones. The impact of diazotrophy increased with the size of the organisms, supporting the wide participation of all trophic levels in the processing of recently fixed nitrogen. These results indicate that atmospheric sources of carbon and nitrogen prevail over deep water sources in the subtropical North Atlantic and that the zone influenced by diazotrophy is much larger than reported in previous studies.

Hypabyssal rocks of the Omgon Range, Western Kamchatka that intrude Upper Albian-Lower Campanian deposits of the Eurasian continental margin belong to three coeval (62.5-63.0 Ma) associations: (1) ilmenite gabbro-dolerites, (2) titanomagnetite gabbro-dolerites and quartz microdiorites, and (3) porphyritic biotite granites and granite-aplites. Early Paleocene age of ilmenite gabbro-dolerites and biotite granites was confirmed by zircon and apatite fission-track dating. Ilmenite and titanomagnetite gabbro-dolerites were produced by multilevel fractional crystallization of basaltic melts with, respectively, moderate and high Fe-Ti contents and contamination of these melts with rhyolitic melts of different compositions. Moderate- and high-Fe-Ti basaltic melts were derived from mantle spinel peridotite variably depleted and metasomatized by slab-derived fluid prior to melting. The melts were generated at variable depths and different degrees of melting. Biotite granites and granite aplites were produced by combined fractional crystallization of a crustal rhyolitic melt and its contamination with terrigenous rocks of the Omgon Group. The rhyolitic melts were likely derived from metabasaltic rocks of suprasubduction nature. Early Paleocene hypabyssal rocks of the Omgon Range were demonstrated to have been formed in an extensional environment, which dominated in the margin of the Eurasian continent from Late Cretaceous throughout Early Paleocene. Extension in the Western Kamchatka segment preceded the origin of the Western Koryakian-Kamchatka (Kinkil') continental-margin volcanic belt in Eocene time. This research was conducted based on original geological, mineralogical, geochemical, and isotopic (Rb-Sr) data obtained by the authors.

A depth transect of cores from 1268 to 3909 m water depth in the western South Atlantic are ideally situated to monitor the interocean exchange of deep water and variations in the relative strength of northern and southern sources of deep water production. Benthic foraminiferal Cd/Ca and d13C data suggest that Glacial North Atlantic Intermediate Water (GNAIW) extended at least as far south as 28°S in the western South Atlantic. The core of nutrient-depleted water was situated at ~1500 m, above and below water masses with higher nutrient concentrations. When examined in conjunction with published paired Cd/Ca and d13C from intermediate depth cores from other basins, it appears that the extent of GNAIW influence on the intermediate waters of the world's oceans was less than suggested previously. Differentiating among possible pathways for the glacial deep ocean (>3 km) requires a better understanding of the controls on Cd/Ca and d13C values of benthic foraminifera.

We present new isotopic data for sedimentary planktonic foraminifera, as well as for potential water column and sedimentary sources of neodymium (Nd), which confirm that the isotopic composition of the foraminifera is the same as surface seawater and very different from deep water and sedimentary Nd. The faithfulness with which sedimentary foraminifera record the isotopic signature of surface seawater Nd is difficult to explain given their variable and high Nd/Ca ratios, ratios that are often sedimentary foraminifera, ratios that are often much higher than is plausible for direct incorporation within the calcite structure. We present further data that demonstrate a similarly large range in Nd/Ca ratios in plankton tow foraminifera, a range that may be controlled by redox conditions in the water column. Cleaning experiments reveal, in common with earlier work, that large amounts of Nd are released by cleaning with both hydrazine and diethylene triamine penta-acetic acid, but that the Nd released at each step is of surface origin. While further detailed studies are required to verify the exact location of the surface isotopic signature and the key controls on foraminiferal Nd isotope systematics, these new data place the use of planktonic foraminifera as recorders of surface water Nd isotope ratios, and thus of variations in the past supply of Nd to the oceans from the continents via weathering and erosion, on a reasonably sure footing.

Ice cores from outside the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets are difficult to date because of seasonal melting and multiple sources (terrestrial, marine, biogenic and anthropogenic) of sulfates deposited onto the ice. Here we present a method of volcanic sulfate extraction that relies on fitting sulfate profiles to other ion species measured along the cores in moving windows in log space. We verify the method with a well dated section of the Belukha ice core from central Eurasia. There are excellent matches to volcanoes in the preindustrial, and clear extraction of volcanic peaks in the post-1940 period when a simple method based on calcium as a proxy for terrestrial sulfate fails due to anthropogenic sulfate deposition. We then attempt to use the same statistical scheme to locate volcanic sulfate horizons within three ice cores from Svalbard and a core from Mount Everest. Volcanic sulfate is <5% of the sulfate budget in every core, and differences in eruption signals extracted reflect the large differences in environment between western, northern and central regions of Svalbard. The Lomonosovfonna and Vestfonna cores span about the last 1000 years, with good extraction of volcanic signals, while Holtedahlfonna which extends to about AD1700 appears to lack a clear record. The Mount Everest core allows clean volcanic signal extraction and the core extends back to about AD700, slightly older than a previous flow model has suggested. The method may thus be used to extract historical volcanic records from a more diverse geographical range than hitherto.

Numerous and variable silty-sandy siliciclastic turbidites were observed in Neogene pelagic sediments (late Miocene to Holocene) at Site 657: (1) thick-bedded, coarse-grained and thin-bedded, fine-grained turbidites; and (2) turbidites composed of eolian dune sand and shallow-water bioclasts or of fluvial-sand or mixed sandy component assemblages. The stratigraphic distribution of these turbidites indicates five periods during which climatic conditions and material sources change. Turbidite occurrence prior to 6.2 Ma (late Miocene) is sparse; the deposits contain coarse and fine-grained turbidites with quartz grains of eolian or mixed origin suggesting the existence of arid conditions at about 8.5 and 6.5 Ma. A coarse-grained turbidite of fluvial origin, recording a humid climate, occurs at about 6.2 Ma. During the early Pliocene, turbidites are frequent (15/Ma); they contain only fine-grained sequences comprising material of mixed origin, which indicates a more humid climate perhaps. The late Pliocene starts with rare coarse-grained turbidites of wind-transported sand while the uppermost Pliocene deposits show a higher frequency of fine-grained sequences (10/0.7 Ma) composed mainly of fluvial material. During the early Pleistocene, similar high turbidite frequency was observed (20/1.3 Ma) but with a total lack of eolian supply. During the last 0.7 Ma, the frequency decreases and the sequences are characterized by highly variable sediment components that could be related to strong variations of climatic conditions. The sedimentary characteristics of turbidites are mainly controlled by sediment source and climate. The frequency must be influenced by sea-level variations, by cyclic processes of climatic origin, and possibly by variations in the continental slope morphology. Clay mineral assemblages suggest a south Saharan source of terrigenous material during the late Miocene and the Pliocene and a northwest Saharan source during the Pleistocene.

Up to the end of the eighties the main source of deep water masses in the Ionian Basin was the southern Adriatic Sea. However, during the nineties a dramatic climatic change took place in the eastern Mediterranean Sea: the Eastern Mediterranean Transient (EMT). Since then, deep water has been formed by waters originating in the Aegean Sea. Expeditions carried out in this region in recent years indicate that the process of deep water formation might reverse again. To what extent this assumption applies and what characteristics the deep water in the Ionian Sea exhibit nowadays, should be determined on the cruise. The process of a re-reversal of abyssal water production in the Ionian Sea is a long-term process and must therfore be monitored for several years. Hence, this cruise is part of a series of cruises investigating this question (POS98, M71/3, MSM13/1-2, MSM15/4). The investigations were carried out by means of CTD/lADCP measurements.

This PhD thesis focused on the analysis and application of microbial membrane lipids as biomarkers in marine sediments. Existing protocols for lipid extraction from marine sediments and biomass were modified. In addition, recent protocols based on high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) as well as state-of-the-art mass spectrometric analysis by quadrupole time-of-flight (MSqTOF) and the triple quadrupole (MSQQQ) mass spectrometer were used to investigate matrix effects and evaluate the reliability of quantitative analysis in marine environmental samples. The improved lipid extraction and quantification were used to analyze Black Sea water column and sediments samples to a depth of 8 meters from site GeoB 15105 taken during cruise M84/1 (DARCSEAS) with R/V Meteor to apply lipid analysis in benthic bio systems. With this component specific differentiation between planktonic and benthic lipid signature we assessed possible lipid sources. Here, this high detail lipid fingerprinting allowed us to observe changes in the head group and lipid core structures of the intact polar lipids according to the geochemical zonation.

We here present a compilation of planktic and benthic 14C reservoir ages for the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and early deglacial from 11 key sites of global ocean circulation in the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific Ocean. The ages were obtained by 14C plateau tuning, a robust technique to derive both an absolute chronology for marine sediment records and a high-resolution record of changing reservoir/ventilation ages (Delta14C values) for surface and deep waters by comparing the suite of planktic 14C plateaus of a sediment record with that of the atmospheric 14C record (Sarnthein et al., 2007, doi:10.1029/173GM13). Results published thus far used as atmospheric 14C reference U/Th-dated corals, the Cariaco planktic record, and speleothems (Fairbanks et al., 2005, doi:10.1016/j.quascirev.2005.04.007; Hughen et al., 2006, doi:10.1016/j.quascirev.2006.03.014; Beck et al., 2001, doi:10.1023/A:1008175728826). We have now used the varve-counted atmospheric 14C record of Lake Suigetsu terrestrial macrofossils (Ramsey et al., 2012, doi:10.1126/science.1226660) to recalibrate the boundary ages and reservoir ages of the seven published records directly to an atmospheric 14C record. In addition, the results for four new cores and further planktic results for four published records are given. Main conclusions from the new compilation are: (1) The Suigetsu atmospheric 14C record on its varve counted time scale reflects all 14C plateaus, their internal structures and relative length previously identified, but implies a rise in the average 14C plateau age by 200-700 14C yr during LGM and early deglacial times. (2) Based on different 14C ages of coeval atmospheric and planktic 14C plateaus, marine surface water Delta14C may have temporarily dropped to an equivalent of ~0 yr in low-latitude lagoon waters, but reached >2500 14C yr both in stratified subpolar waters and in upwelled waters such as in the South China Sea. These values differ significantly from a widely assumed constant global planktic Delta14C value of 400 yr. (3) Suites of deglacial planktic Delta14C values are closely reproducible in 14C records measured at neighboring core sites. (4) Apparent deep-water 14C ventilation ages (equivalents of benthic Delta14C), deduced from the sum of planktic Delta14C and coeval benthic-planktic 14C differences, vary from 500 up to >5000 yr in LGM and deglacial ocean basins.

Survival of coral planulae, and the successful settlement and healthy growth of primary polyps are critical for the dispersal of scleractinian corals and hence the recovery of degraded coral reefs. It is therefore important to explore how the warmer and more acidic oceanic conditions predicted for the future could affect these processes. This study used controlled culture to investigate the effects of a 1 °C increase in temperature and a 0.2-0.25 unit decrease in pH on the settlement and survival of planulae and the growth of primary polyps in the Tropical Eastern Pacific coral Porites panamensis. We found that primary polyp growth was reduced only marginally by more acidic seawater but the combined effect of high temperature and lowered pH caused a significant reduction in growth of primary polyps by almost a third. Elevated temperature was found to significantly reduce the amount of zooxanthellae in primary polyps, and when combined with lowered pH resulted in a significant reduction in biomass of primary polyps. However, survival and settlement of planula larvae were unaffected by increased temperature, lowered acidity or the combination of both. These results indicate that in future scenarios of increased temperature and oceanic acidity coral planulae will be able to disperse and settle successfully but primary polyp growth may be hampered. The recovery of reefs may therefore be impeded by global change even if local stressors are curbed and sufficient sources of planulae are available.
