The gut contents and fatty acid composition of 49 fish belonging to five Antarctic demersal families (Nototheniidae, Macrouridae, Channichtyidae, Bathydraconidae and Artedidraconidae) sampled at two stations at the Southern Ocean shelf and deep sea (600 and 2150 m) were analysed in order to identify their main food resource by linking trophic biomarkers with the dietary items found in the fish guts. Main food items of most fish analysed were amphipod crustaceans (e.g. in 63% of Trematomus bernachii guts) and polychaetes (e.g. in 80% of Bathydraco sp. guts), but other food items including fish, other crustaceans and gastropods were also ingested. The most prominent fatty acids found were 20:5(n-3), 16:0, 22:6(n-3) and 18:1(n-9). The results of gut content and fatty acid analyses indicate that all fish except the Channichthyidae share similar food resources irrespective of their depth distribution, i.e. benthic amphipods and polychaetes. A difference of the dietary spectrum can be observed with ontogenetic phases rather than between species, as high values of typical calanoid copepod marker fatty acids as 22:1(n-11) indicate that younger (smaller) specimens include more zooplankton in their diet.

During a winter expedition to the western Barents Sea in March 2003, benthic amphipods of the species Anonyx sarsi were observed directly below pack ice. Only males and juveniles [16.0-37.0 mm long, 16.2-120.8 mg dry mass (DM)] were collected. Guts contained macroalgal fibres, fish eggs and flesh from large carrion. Amphipods had very low levels of total lipids (2.7-17.2% DM). Analysis of lipid biomarkers showed that some of the specimens had preyed on pelagic copepods. Individual respiration rates ranged over 0.4-1.7 ml O2/day (mean: 1.2 ml, SD: 0.5 ml). Individual ammonia excretion rates varied between 7.8 µg and 49.3 µg N/day (mean: 30.7 µg, SD: 15.2 µg). The atomic O:N ratio ranged over 35 to 71 (mean: 55, SD: 14), indicating lipid-dominated metabolism. Mass-specific respiration ranged over 9.8-16.6 ml O2/day/g DM (mean: 13.1 ml, SD: 2.2 ml). The metabolic rates of A. sarsi were twice as high as those of the truly sympagic amphipod Gammarus wilkitzkii, which is better adapted to the under-ice habitat by its energy-saving attached lifestyle. It is concluded that males and juveniles of A. sarsi were actively searching for food in the water column and at the ice underside, but that the nutritional status of the amphipods in late Arctic winter was generally very poor.

Microorganisms inhabit very different soil habitats in the ice-free areas of Antarctica, playing a major role in nutrient cycling in cold environments. We studied the soil characteristics and the dominant bacterial composition from nine different soil profiles located on Livingston Island (maritime Antarctica). The total carbon (TC) and total nitrogen (TN) values were high for the vegetated soils, decreasing with depth, whereas the values for the mineral soils were generally low. Soil pH was more acidic for moss-covered soils and neutral to alkaline for mineral soils. Numbers of culturable heterotrophic bacteria were higher at vegetated sites, but significant numbers were also detectable in carbon-depleted soils. Patterns of denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) revealed a highly heterogeneous picture throughout the soil profiles. Subsequent sequencing of DGGE bands revealed in total 252 sequences that could be assigned to 114 operational taxonomic units, showing the dominance of members of the Bacteroidetes and Acidobacteria. The results of phospholipid fatty acid analysis showed a lack of unsaturated fatty acids for most of the samples. Samples with a prevalence of unsaturated over saturated fatty acids were restricted to several surface samples. Statistical analysis showed that the dominant soil bacterial community composition is most affected by TC and TN contents and soil physical factors such as grain size and moisture, but not pH. Diatomaceous mud and an organically-rich claystone from holes at Sites 474 and 476 at the mouth of the Gulf of California were analyzed by organic geochemical methods to characterize their organic matter. The lipids of all three samples are primarily marine autochthonous, with the exception of Sample 474-5-3, 105-107 cm, which also contains some vascular plant wax. Based on the lipid composition, the sediment was deposited mainly under oxic environmental conditions. The kerogens were aliphatic and autochthonous marine. Two lignite fragments were also analyzed, and the data indicate that they are driftwood that absorbed marine bitumen from the surrounding sediment during coalification.

In this chapter, we will report on the amino acids in the total acid hydrolysate of eight sediment samples from Leg 68 Site 502. This site was located on a topographic high at a depth of 3051 meters in the Colombian Basin of the western Caribbean Sea. Four holes were cored at the site by means of the hydraulic piston corer to a maximum sediment depth of 218 meters. The composite section is a virtually continuous, undisturbed sediment record covering almost 8 million years from the Holocene to late Miocene. Age estimates for the section are based on excellent magnetostratigraphic and biostratigraphic records. Four lithostratigraphic units (A, B, C, and D) were recognized, based on differences in color and content of clay, ash, foraminifers, and siliceous microfossils (Prell, Gardner, et al., 1980): A, yellowish brown to light brownish gray foraminifer-bearing (> 10%) nannofossil marl; B, gray to olive gray foraminifer-bearing nannofossil marl with occasional ash beds; C, light gray to dark greenish gray calcareous clay and foraminifer-bearing (< 10%) nannofossil marl; D, pale green to grayish green calcareous, ash-bearing clay with siliceous microfossils. The calcium carbonate content of these sediments increases from about 27 to about 49% from late Miocene to middle Pliocene (about 3.6 Ma) and remains uniform at about 48 to 50% from that time throughout the Quaternary. The eight sediment samples for amino acid analyses came from the third (502B) and fourth (502C) holes at Site 502. Samples ranged in sub-bottom depth from 4.3 to 225 meters spanning time from 0.3 to 7.7 Ma.

This study of vertical fatty acid profiles, based on analysis of 58 fatty acids sampled at 3-mm intervals throughout the blubber column of a model marine mammal, the ringed seal (Pusa hispida), revealed three chemically distinct layers. The average depths of the outer and inner layers were quite consistent (~1.5 and ~1 cm, respectively). Consequently, the middle layer varied greatly in thickness, from being virtually absent in the thinnest animals to 2.5 cm thick in the fattest. The relative consistencies of the thickness and composition of the layers as well as the nature of the fatty acids making up each layer support the generally assumed function of the various layers: (1) the outer layer is primarily structural and thermoregulatory, (2) the inner layer is metabolically active with a fatty acid composition that is strongly affected by recent/ongoing lipid mobilization/deposition, and (3) the middle layer is a storage site that contracts and expands with food availability/consumption. The remarkable dynamics of the middle layer along with the discrete pattern of stratification found in the vertical fatty acid profiles have important implications for methodological sampling design for studies of foraging ecology and toxicology based on analyses of blubber of marine mammals.
