The Danubs 2000 dataset contains zooplankton data collected in April, June. October and November 2000 in 11 station allong 5 transect in front of the Romanian littoral. Zooplankton sampling was undertaken at 11 stations where samples were collected using a Juday closing net in the 0-10, 10-25, and 25-50m layer (depending also on the water masses). The dataset includes samples analysed for mesozooplankton species composition and abundance. Sampling volume was estimated by multiplying the mouth area with the wire length. Taxon-specific mesozooplankton abundance was count under microscope. Total abundance is the sum of the counted individuals. Total biomass Fodder, Rotifera , Ctenophora and Noctiluca was estimated using a tabel with wet weight for each species an stage.

The clay mineral composition at IODP Exp. 323 Site U1343 in the Bering Sea was analyzed so as to unravel their provenance over glacial-interglacial cycles for the last 2.4 Ma. Smectite was negatively correlated with the sum of illite and chlorite; therefore, their ratio [S/(I + C)] was used as an indicator of clay mineral composition changes. In general, the S/(I + C) ratio was rather similar for glacial and interglacial periods during most of the last 2.4 Ma. In addition, these results overlap with those of surface sediments in the modern East Aleutian Basin, which suggests that smectite-rich clay particles are delivered from the Aleutians by the northward Bering Slope Current (BSC) rather than from rivers in western Alaska. However, some clay mineral compositions of the glacial periods after the Mid-Pleistocene Transition (MPT: 1.25-0.7 Ma) were characterized by low illite and relatively high smectite. During this period, extensive ice-rafting might have transported the smectite-rich clay particles to Site U1343 from the glacial shelf off Alaska and/or from glacial rivers from that area.

The samples were concentrated down to 50 cm**3 by slow decantation after storage for 20 days in a cool and dark place. The species identification was done under light microscope OLIMPUS-BS41 connected to a video-interactive image analysis system at magnification of the ocular 10X and objective - 40X. A Sedgwick-Rafter camera (1ml) was used for counting. 400 specimen were counted for each sample, while rare and large species were checked in the whole sample (Manual of phytoplankton, 2005). Species identification was mainly after Carmelo T. (1997) and Fukuyo, Y. (2000). Total phytoplankton abundance was calculated as sum of taxon-specific abundances. Total phytoplankton biomass was calculated as sum of taxon-specific biomasses. The cell biovolume was determined based on morpho-metric measurement of phytoplankton units and the corresponding geometric shapes as described in detail in (Edier, 1979).

Composition and distribution.of ice-rafted coarse debris from the Kara Sea bottom were investigated. This material was obtained on 42 stations in Cruise 49 of R/V Dmitry Mendeleev by Sigsby trawls, box corers, grabs, and gravity corers. Existence of two main petrographic provinces is suggested: (1) West Kara and (2) East Kara. They differ in composition and sources of debris material. It is supposed that debris was transported mainly by floating ice. In Upper Pleistocene time rafting by glaciers and icebergs was also very possible.
Temperature and salinity reconstruction for the Last Interglacial Period in the North Atlantic Ocean

Eight deep-sea sediment cores from the North Atlantic Ocean ranging from 31° to 72°N are studied to reconstruct the meridional gradients in surface hydrographic conditions during the interval of minimum ice volume within the last interglacial period. Using benthic foraminiferal ?18O measurements and estimates of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and Sea Surface Salinity (SSS), we show that summer SSTs and SSSs decreased gradually during the interval of minimum ice volume at high-latitude sites (52°-72°N) whereas they were stable or increased during the same time period at low-latitude sites (31°-41°N). This increase in meridional gradients of SSTs and SSSs may have been due to changes in the latitudinal distribution of summer and annual-average insolation and associated oceanic and atmospheric feedbacks. These trends documented for the Eemian ice volume minimum period are similar to corresponding changes observed during the Holocene and may have had a similar origin.

Basement rocks were recovered at four sites on Leg 115 along the Reunion hotspot track in the western Indian Ocean. Plate tectonic reconstructions indicate that the drilled structures formed in three different volcanic environments. Sites 706 and 713 from the eastern side of the Saya de Malha Bank and the northern end of the Chagos Bank, respectively, are on a large volcanic platform analogous to Iceland on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Lavas at Site 707 on the northwestern side of the Saya de Malha Bank erupted during the early stages of rifting of the Seychelles from India. Basalts from Site 715 were erupted onto an isolated oceanic island that was distant from ocean ridges and continents much as Reunion Island is today. Many of the rocks were examined in thin section and found to be primarily augite-plagioclase basalts with minor olivine and rare opaque oxides. Site 715 is unusual in that it contains a variety of basalts including olivine-rich and aphyric Fe-Ti basalts. At each of the four sites the rocks were grouped into chemical types (units) on the basis of ship- board bulk-rock analyses and at least one thin section from each chemical unit was analyzed by electron microprobe. The plagioclase and augite chemistry reflects the bulk-rock chemistry and, in general, these minerals were in equilibrium with their host magmas at the time the basalts were quenched. Olivine was rarely preserved, but where it is still present it also appears to have crystallized in equilibrium with the host magma. At three of the drill sites plagioclase phenocrysts or megacrysts that crystallized from a primitive magma are also present. The one site (715) that does not contain these primitive plagioclase phenocrysts is also the site that appears to have been influenced the least by ocean- ridge or Deccan-type magmas. Site 715, furthermore, has a mineralogy that is dominated by olivine as compared with the plagioclase-rich lavas of the other sites.

The data collection "Deep Drilling of Glaciers: Soviet-Russian projects in Arctic, 1975-1995" was collected by the following basic considerations: - compilation of deep (>100 m) drilling projects on Arctic glaciers, using data of (a) publications; (b) archives of IGRAN; (c) personal communication of project participants; - documentation of parameters, references. Accuracy of data and techniques applied to determine different parameters are not evaluated. The accuracy of some geochemical parameters (up to 1984 and heavy metalls) is uncertain. Most reconstructions of ice core age and of annual layer thickness are discussed; - digitizing of published diagrams (in case, when original numerical data were lost) and subsequent data conversion to equal range series and adjustment to the common units. Therefore, the equal-range series were calculated from original data or converted from digitized chart values as indicated in the metadata. For the methodological purpose, the equal-range series obtained from original and reconstructed data were compared repeatedly; the systematic difference was less then 5-7%. Special attention should be given to the fact, that the data for individual ice core parameters varies, because some parameters were originally measured or registered. Parameters were converted in equal-range series using 2 m steps; - two or more parameter values were determined, then the mean-weighted (i.e. accounting the sample length) value is assigned to the entire interval; - one parameter value was determined, measured or registered independently from the parameter values in depth intervals which over- and underlie it, then the value is assigned to the entire interval; - one parameter value was determined, measured or registered for two adjoining depth intervals, then the specific value is assigned to the depth interval, which represents >75% of sample length ; if each of adjoining depth intervals represents <75% of sample length, then the correspondent parameter value is assigned to both intervals of depth.
