Abundance records of planktonic foraminifera (>150 µm) from the upper 520 m of ODP Site 1073 (Hole 1073A, Leg 174A, 639 m water depth) have been integrated with SPECMAP-derived isotope stratigraphy, percentage of calcium carbonate, and coarse sediment fraction data in order to investigate the Pleistocene climatic history of the New Jersey margin. Six planktonic taxonomic groups dominate the foraminiferal assemblage at Site 1073: Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (d) (mean 33.8%), Turborotalita quinqueloba (18.5%), N. pachyderma (s) (18.4%), Globigerina bulloides group (11.4%), Globorotalia inflata group (9.4%), and Globigerinita glutinata (4.1%). Based on the distributions of these six foraminiferal groups, the Pleistocene section can be divided into three paleoclimatic intervals: Interval I (intermediate) corresponds to the Quaternary sediments from sequence boundary pp1 to the seafloor (79.5-0 mbsf; Emiliania huxleyi acme [85 ka] at 72 mbsf); Interval II (warm) occurs between sequence boundaries pp3 and pp1 (325-79.5 mbsf; last occurrence of Pseudoemiliania lacunosa [460 ka] at 330 mbsf); and Interval III (coldest) occurs between sequence boundaries pp4 and pp3 (520-325 mbsf; Calcareous nannofossils and dinocysts in proximity to pp4 indicate that the sedimentary record for 0.9-1.7 Ma is either missing altogether or highly condensed within the basal few meters of the section). Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (d) displays eight peaks of abundance which correlate, for the most part, with depleted delta18O values, increases in calcium carbonate percentages, low coarse fraction percentages, increased planktonic fragmentation (greater dissolution), and low N. pachyderma (s) abundances. These intervals are interpreted as representing warmer/interglacial conditions. Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (s) displays seven peaks of abundance which correlate, for the most part, with delta18O increases, decreases in calcium carbonate percentages, increases in coarse fraction percentages, and low N. pachyderma (d) abundances. These intervals are interpreted as representing cooler/glacial conditions. In Interval III, a faunal response to relative changes in sea-surface temperature is reflected by abundance peaks in Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (d), followed by Turborotalita quinqueloba and then N. pachyderma (s) (proceeding from warmest to coolest, respectively). This tripartite response is consistent with the oxygen isotope record and, although not as clear, also occurs in Intervals I and II. Six peaks/peak intervals of Globigerina bulloides abundance are closely matched by peaks in Globigerinita glutinata and occur within oxygen isotope stage (OIS) 2 (latter part) 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 13(?), 14(?), and 15(?). We speculate that these intervals reflect increased upwelling and nutrient levels during both glacials and interglacials. Eight peak intervals of Globorotalia inflata show a general inverse correlation with G. bulloides and may reflect lowered nutrient and warmer surface waters.

Sediment cored within the Barbados subduction complex at Sites 541 and 542 are underconsolidated. Underconsolidation and changes in physical properties of the cored section can be related to excess pore water pressure that equals the lithostatic load at Site 542 and to major thrust faulting observed at Site 541. Apparently, the pore fluids within the subduction complex are absorbing the tectonic shock of underthrusting. Sediment sampled from the reference Site 543 on the adjacent Atlantic Plate are also underconsolidated. However, underconsolidation in Hole 543 is apparently due to the movement of excess nitrogen gas observed deeper in the hole. Excess gas was not observed at Sites 541 and 542.

Data obtained while investigating the mounds area near the Galapagos Spreading Center demonstrate the direct influence of solutions derived from the interaction of seawater and young oceanic crust on the sedimentary cover. Investigation of metalliferous sediments from the mid-oceanic ridges, the Galapagos mounds, and the FAMOUS-area zone formations have shown that this influence and the resulting products are dependent on composition, temperature, and conditions of solution input. The study of sulfur in upwardly migrating solutions and the interaction of these solutions with sediments is of great interest. Investigations of different types of hydrothermally derived formations (Edmond, et al., 1979; Spiess et al., 1980; Styrt et al., 1981; Rosanova 1976; Grinenko et al., 1978) have shown the significant role of sulfur-bearing minerals in deposits formed from hightemperature solutions. In contrast, the addition of hydrothermal sulfur is negligible in those metalliferous sediments that precipitated as a result of the interaction between the solutions and open seawater (Bonatti et al., 1972, 1976; Gordeev et al., 1979; Migdisov, Bogdanov, et al., 1979). For example, sulfides are absent in clearly oxidized metalliferous sediments from the East Pacific Rise (EPR). Barite sulfur from these sediments is identical with seawater sulfate sulfur in isotope composition (Grinenko et al., 1978). Gurvich and Bogdanov (1977) have suggested that barium from EPR metalliferous sediments results completely from biological activity and from the components of ocean waters. Edmond et al. (1979) report that low-temperature springs from the Galapagos Rift axis contain two types of solutions: those with and those without H2S.

Radiocarbon age differences for pairs of coexisting late glacial age benthic and planktic foraminifera shells handpicked from 10 sediment samples from a core from a depth of 2.8 km in the western equatorial Pacific are not significantly different from that of 1600 years calculated from measurements on prenuclear seawater. This places a lower limit on the depth of the interface for the hypothetical radiocarbon-depleted glacial age seawater reservoir required to explain the 190 per mil drop in the 14C/C for atmospheric CO2, which occurred during the mystery interval (17.5 to 14.5 calendar years ago). These measurements restrict the volume of this reservoir to be no more than 35% that of the ocean. Further, 14C measurements on a single Last Glacial Maximum age sample from a central equatorial Pacific core from a depth of 4.4 km water fail to reveal evidence for the required 5- to 7-kyr age difference between benthic and planktic foraminifera shells if the isolated reservoir occupied only one third of the ocean. Nor does the 13C record for benthic forams from this abyssal core yield any evidence for the excess respiration CO2 expected to be produced during thousands of years of isolation. Nor, as indicated by the presence of benthic foraminifera, was the dissolved oxygen used up in this abyssal water.

During the Indian Ocean Expedition of the German research vessel "Meteor" and the following cruise with the Pakistani fishing vessel "Machhera" in February and March 1965, sediments were sampled from the shelf, continental slope and the Arabian Basin off Pakistan and India. The biostratigraphic studies are based on sedimentary material from 24 sediment cores up to 480 cm long and 100 grab samples. The faunal residues of the > 160 µ fraction (chiefly foraminifera and pteropods) were determined and counted in order to get an idea of the climatic conditions during the Late Quaternary of this region. Biostratigraphic correlations of these Late Quaternary deposits are only possible if the thanatocoenosis of the surface sediments are well known. The analysis of the benthonic foraminiferal populations resulted in the definition of several foraminiferal facies. The following sequence of forarniniferal facies, named after their most characteristic members, can be distinguished from the shelf to the deep-sea: 1. Ammonia-Florilus facies ; 2. Ammonia-Cancris facies; 3. Cassidulina-Cibicides facies; 4. Uvigerina-Cassidulina facies ; 5. Buliminacea facies ; 6. deepwater facies, partly with Bulimina aculeata or with Nonionidae. On the upper continental slope there is a zone extremely poor in benthonic foraminifera. In this water depth the oxygen minimum layer (0.05-0.02 ml/l) of the water column reaches the slope. Almost no connection can be observed between the living and the dead foraminiferal population of the same sample. The regional distribution of the planktonic foraminifera from plankton tows as well as from the surface sediments shows marked differences in the species composition of faunas from different regions within the area of investigation. That depends on oceanographic conditions such as upwelling, dissolution of carbonate at great depths etc. Based on the results of faunal analysis of samples from the recent sea-floor, a biostratigraphic subdivision of the sediments in the cores was established. The following biostratigraphically defined sections could be distinguished from the top of the sediment cores downwards : 1. Relatively cool climatic conditions are reflected by the foraminifera of the uppermost core sections. 2. The next section is characterized by much warmer conditions (Holocene climatic optimum). The C-14 ages of this interval range from 4000 to 10 000 years B.P. according to different authors. C-14 dates on the material investigated do not give reliable clues. 3. Foraminiferal populations adapted to much colder conditions can be observed in the underlying core section. The boundary between the warm climate reflected by the foraminifera of section 2 and the cold climate (section 3) is relatively sharp. It can be correlated from core to core over the whole area investigated. The cold climate sediments of section 3 are underlain by different cool-, warm- and cold-climate sediments which can only be correlated over very short distances. Since it appears certain that the last really cold conditions ended earlier in the Arabian Sea and its vicinity than in Europe it is recommended not to use the European stratigraphic terms for the Quaternary. Because of the lack of reliable absolute sediment ages for the cores no exact sedimentation rates can be given. According to rough estimates, however, the rates are 1-2 cm/1000 years in the deep basin and up to 40 cm/1000 years on the upper continental slope. Sedimentation rates are always larger near the mouth of the Indus-River than off South India at stations of about the same water depth. Planktonic gastropods (mainly pteropods) cannot be used for biostratigraphic purposes in the region under consideration. All of them seem to be displaced from the shelf. Biogenic particle fluxes from highly productive surface waters, boundary scavenging, and hydrothermal activity are the main factors influencing the deposition of radionuclides in the area of the Galapagos microplate, eastern Equatorial Pacific. In order to evaluate the importance of these three processes throughout the last 100 kyr, concentrations of the radionuclides 10Be, 230Th, and 231Pa, and of Mn and Fe were measured at high resolution in sediment samples from two gravity cores KLH 068 and KLH 093. High biological productivity in the surface waters overlying the investigated area has led to 10Be and 231Pa fluxes exceeding production during at least the last 30 kyr and probably the last 100 kyr. However, during periods of high productivity at the up welling centers off Peru and extension of the equatorial high-productivity zone, a relative loss of 10Be and 231Pa may have occurred in these sediment cores because of boundary scavenging. The effects of hydrothermal activity were investigated by comparing the 230Thex concentrations to the Mn/Fe ratios and by comparing the fluxes of 230Th and 10Be which exceed production. The results suggest an enhanced hydrothermal influence during isotope stages 4 and 5 and to a lesser extent during isotope stage 1 in core KLH 093. During isotope stages 2 and 3, the hydrothermal supply of Mn was deposited elsewhere, probably because of changes in current regime or deep water oxygenation. A strong increase of the Mn/Fe ratio at the beginning of climatic stage 1 which is not accompanied by an increase of the 230Thex concentration is interpreted to be an effect of Mn remobilization and reprecipitation in the sediment.

The enhanced accumulation of organic matter in Eastern Mediterranean sapropels and their unusually low d15N values have been attributed to either enhanced nutrient availability which led to elevated primary production and carbon sequestration or to enhanced organic matter preservation under anoxic conditions. In order to evaluate these two hypothesis we have determined Ba/Al ratios, amino acid composition, N and organic C concentrations and d15N in sinking particles, surface sediments, eight spatially distributed core records of the youngest sapropel S1 (10-6 ka) and older sapropels (S5, S6) from two locations. These data suggest that (i) temporal and spatial variations in d15N of sedimentary N are driven by different degrees of diagenesis at different sites rather than by changes in N-sources or primary productivity and (ii) present day TOC export production would suffice to create a sapropel like S1 under conditions of deep-water anoxia. This implies that both enhanced TOC accumulation and d15N depletion in sapropels were due to the absence of oxygen in deep waters. Thus preservation plays a major role for the accumulation of organic-rich sediments casting doubt on the need of enhanced primary production for sapropel formation.

The distinctly cyclic sediments recovered during ODP Leg 154 played an important role in constructing the astronomical time scale and associated astro(bio)chronology for the Miocene, and in deciphering ocean-climate history. The accuracy of the timescale critically depends on the reliability of the shipboard splice used for the tuning and on the tuning itself. New high-resolution colour- and magnetic susceptibility core scanning data supplemented with limited XRF-data allow improvement of the stratigraphy. The revised composite record results in an improved astronomical age model for ODP Site 926 between 5 and 14.4 Ma. The new age model is confirmed by results of complex amplitude demodulation of the precession and obliquity related cycle patterns. Different values for tidal dissipation are applied to improve the fit between the sedimentary cycle patterns and the astronomical solution. Due to the improved stratigraphy and tuning, supported by the results of amplitude demodulation, the revised time scale yields more reliable age estimates for planktic foraminiferal and calcareous nannofossil events. The results of this study highlight the importance of stratigraphy for timescale construction.

A depression filled with Late Glacial and Holocene sediments was excavated during the geological exploration and recovery of a dump area near Tessin close to Rostock, and initiated the studies of the present paper. Pebble analysis of three exposed or respectively drilled till horizons as well as pollenanalytical, carpological and faunistical studies carried out allow the stratigraphical subdivision of the Quaternary sequence of the dump area. The basal till was probably the result of dead ice decay, and was lithostratigraphically assigned to the Pomerian Stage (qw2). The palynological results of boreholes RKS 19/93 and A/92 reveal pre-Allerod and other sediments instead of the expected interweichselian deposits. Based on the palynological and carpological findings, we correlated the beginning of the late glacial development in the locality with the end of the Meiendorf-lnterstadial sensu Menke in Bock et al. (1985, doi:10.3285/eg.35.1.18). The limnic-telmatic sedimentation could be observed pollen floristically probably starting with the Meiendorf-lnterstadial (Hippophae-Betula nana-phase) followed by the Bolling-(Betula nana-B. alba s.l.-Artemisia-Helianthemum-Poaceae-phase) and the Allerad-lnterstadial [Betula alba s.l.-(Pinus)-Cyperaceae-phase] lasting up to the Younger Dryas (Juniperus-Artemisia-Poaceae-phase). Sedimentation closed during the Younger Dryas with the accumulation of fine sands. It was reactivated later during the Holocene due to the anthropogene influence (Older and Younger Subatlantic, dampness of the depression by clearing).
