A depression filled with Late Glacial and Holocene sediments was excavated during the geological exploration and recovery of a dump area near Tessin close to Rostock, and initiated the studies of the present paper. Pebble analysis of three exposed or respectively drilled till horizons as well as pollenanalytical, carpological and faunistical studies carried out allow the stratigraphical subdivision of the Quaternary sequence of the dump area. The basal till was probably the result of dead ice decay, and was lithostratigraphically assigned to the Pomerian Stage (qw2). The palynological results of boreholes RKS 19/93 and A/92 reveal pre-Allerod and other sediments instead of the expected interweichselian deposits. Based on the palynological and carpological findings, we correlated the beginning of the late glacial development in the locality with the end of the Meiendorf-lnterstadial sensu Menke in Bock et al. (1985, doi:10.3285/eg.35.1.18). The limnic-telmatic sedimentation could be observed pollen floristically probably starting with the Meiendorf-lnterstadial (Hippophae-Betula nana-phase) followed by the Bolling-(Betula nana-B. alba s.l.-Artemisia-Helianthemum-Poaceae-phase) and the Allerad-lnterstadial [Betula alba s.l.-(Pinus)-Cyperaceae-phase] lasting up to the Younger Dryas (Juniperus-Artemisia-Poaceae-phase). Sedimentation closed during the Younger Dryas with the accumulation of fine sands. It was reactivated later during the Holocene due to the anthropogene influence (Older and Younger Subatlantic, dampness of the depression by clearing).

The dataset is based on samples collected in the summer of 2000 in the Western Black Sea in front of Bulgaria coast. The whole dataset is composed of 84 samples (from 31 stations of National Monitoring Grid) with data of mesozooplankton species composition abundance and biomass. Samples were collected in discrete layers 0-10, 0-20, 0-50, 10-25, 25-50, 50-100 and from bottom up to the surface at depths depending on water column stratification and the thermocline depth. The collected material was analysed using the method of Domov (1959). Samples were brought to volume of 25-30 ml depending upon zooplankton density and mixed intensively until all organisms were distributed randomly in the sample volume. After that 5 ml of sample was taken and poured in the counting chamber which is a rectangle form for taxomomic identification and count. Large (> 1 mm body length) and not abundant species were calculated in whole sample. Counting and measuring of organisms were made in the Dimov chamber under the stereomicroscope to the lowest taxon possible. Taxonomic identification was done at the Institute of Oceanology by Lyudmila Kamburska using the relevant taxonomic literature (Mordukhay-Boltovskoy, F.D. (Ed.). 1968, 1969,1972). A close examination of the siliceous microfossil assemblages from the sediments of ODP Leg 127, Japan Sea Sites 794, 795, and 797, reveals that upper Pliocene and Pleistocene assemblages have been subjected to more dissolution than have lower Pliocene assemblages. This conclusion is based on semiquantitative observations of samples processed for diatoms and radiolarians. Although preservation of opaline microfossils in some upper Pliocene and Pleistocene samples is better than others, in general, the poorly preserved state of these assemblages supports the notion that opal dissolution, in response to lowered productivity, is responsible for the paucity of siliceous microfossils in upper Pliocene and Pleistocene sediments. The lithological transition from diatomaceous oozes to silts and clays corresponds to a change between dominantly well preserved to more poorly preserved siliceous assemblages, and is termed the late Pliocene Japan Sea opal dissolution transition zone (ODTZ). The base of the ODTZ is defined as the uppermost occurrence of high abundances of moderately to well preserved valves of the diatom Coscinodiscus marginatus. The dissolution transition zone is characterized by partially dissolved refractory assemblages of radiolarians, the presence of C. marginatus girdles, C. marginatus fragments, siliceous sponge spicules, and a general decrease in weakly silicified, less solution resistant diatoms upward in the section. The top of the dissolution transition zone marks the level where whole C. marginatus valves and C. marginatus fragments are no longer present in significant numbers. Dissolution of the late Pliocene and Pleistocene opaline assemblages is attributed mainly to changes in paleoceanographic circulation patterns and decreased nutrient (dissolved silicon) contents of the water column, and possibly dissolution at the sediment/water interface, rather than to post-depositional dissolution or diagenesis. We suggest that the transition from silica-rich to silica-poor conditions in the Japan Sea was due to fluctuations of deep-water exchange with the Pacific through the Tsugaru Strait between 2.9 and 2.3 Ma.

This paper deals with the presence and distribution of Thecosomatous Pteropods in the Indian Ocean. 122 plankton-samples, taken by R.V. "Meteor" during the International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE) in 1964-65 were investigated. They contain a total number of about 45000 Thecosomata, belonging to 22 species and 5 families. Some species (e.g. Creseis acicula and Limacina inflata) are common in the entire area, others (e.g. Creseis chierchiae and Desmopterus gardinieri) show a quite distinct distribution. From several species only one single specimen was captured, others are completely lacking in the collection though they have been reported frequently from the same area by other expeditions. This may be due to seasonal variations and to the fact that no bathial tows were taken. In spite of these restrictions the extensive material from a relatively small area offers the possibility to compare specific and nonspecific features in related species and to question their taxonomic value.
