The worldwide effects of ocean acidification (OA) on marine species are a growing concern. In temperate coastal seas, seaweeds are dominant primary producers that create complex habitats and supply energy to higher trophic levels. Studies on OA and macroalgae have focused on calcifying species and adult stages but, critically, they have overlooked the microscopic stages of the reproductive life cycle, which, for other anthropogenic stress e.g. UV-B radiation, are the most susceptible life-history phase. Also, environmental cues and stressors can cause changes in the sex ratio which has implications for the mating system and recruitment success. Here, we report the effects of pH (7.59-8.50) on meiospore germination and sex determination for the giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera (Laminariales), in the presence and absence of additional dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). Lowered pH (7.59-7.60, using HCl-only) caused a significant reduction in germination, while added DIC had the opposite effect, indicating that increased CO2 at lower pH ameliorates physiological stress. This finding also highlights the importance of appropriate manipulation of seawater carbonate chemistry when testing the effects of ocean acidification on photosynthetic organisms. The proportion of male to female gametophytes did not vary significantly between treatments suggesting that pH was not a primary environmental modulator of sex. Relative to the baseline (pH 8.19), gametophytes were 32% larger under moderate OA (pH 7.86) compared to their size (10% increase) under extreme OA (pH 7.61). This study suggests that metabolically-active cells can compensate for the acidification of seawater. This homeostatic function minimises the negative effects of lower pH (high H+ ions) on cellular activity. The 6-9% reduction in germination success under extreme OA suggests that meiospores of M.pyrifera may be resistant to future ocean acidification.

Palynofloras of the Kocaçay and Cumaovasi basins in western Turkey that belong to a time-span from the late Early to late Middle Miocene (the late Burdigalian-Serravallian) are studied and compared with published palynofloras of Europe and Turkey. Palynological data and numerical climatic results obtained by the coexistence approach indicate palaeoclimate changed from warm subtropical to temperate during the late Burdigalian-Serravallian. Moreover, the palaeoclimates of the Kocacay and Cumaovasi basins are compared with continental palaeoclimatic records of coal-bearing sediments in western Turkey and current temperatures in the Izmir region. According to this comparison, palaeoclimatic results of these basins and other localities in western Turkey show a distinct difference as a result of orographic change. The palaeovegetation in the Kocaçay and Cumaovasi basins during the studied time-span was affected by palaeotopography and palaeoclimate. In these basins mixed mesophytic, coniferous forests, and swamp palaeovegetation generally predominated during the late Early-early Middle Miocene. The role of the herbaceous taxa increased at the end of the late Middle Miocene (the Serravallian) in the Kocaçay and Cumaovasi basins. It is obvious from the palynomorph data of these basins that grassland palaeovegetation started to expand in the late Middle Miocene. Unlike in Central Europe, where late Burdigalian and Langhian represent a period of outstanding warmth, the so-called Mid-Miocene Climatic Optimum, cold month mean temperatures reconstructed in this study point to an ongoing cooling trend, already from the late Burdigalian onwards, possibly related to increasing terrestrial conditions in the study area.

A well-preserved, diverse sporomorph flora of over 60 species has been found in Cores 120-750B-12W through -14R from the Southern Kerguelen Plateau. Analysis of the flora indicates that the terrestrial sediments overlaying the basaltic basement are late Early Cretaceous in age. Ranges of the sporomorphs in other parts of Gondwana and the morphology and paucity of angiosperm pollen grains confine the age of this section to the early to possibly early middle Albian. The Albian palynomorph assemblages in Hole 750B are composed primarily of fern spores and podocarpaceous pollen, and show most similarity to those from southern Australia. Changes in the flora through time reflect the successional vegetation changes on barren volcanic islands, beginning with high percentages of colonizing ferns and maturing into conifer (podocarp) forests. The flora shows some signs of endemism, which may be a result of the isolated position of the Kerguelen Islands during the Early Cretaceous. This endemism is expressed by high percentages of a distinctive monosulcate pollen species Ashmoripollis woodywisei n.sp. of pteridosperm or cycadophytean origin, and by a thick-walled, monosulcate angiosperm pollen species of the genus Clavatipollenites. The climatic conditions were probably cool to temperate (mean annual temperature approximately 7°-12°C) and humid (annual rainfall >1000 mm), analogous to modern Podocarpus-dominated forests in New Zealand and in South American mountain regions.

A comparison of a last interglacial annually laminated and varve counted maar lake record from the Eifel/Germany, with a laminated lake sediment record from Northern Germany shows, that high resolution cores can be correlated across central Europe by dust/loess content, if the resolution of grain size data is on the order of decades/centuries. Phases of widespread dust dispersal are the same as the cold events in the Greenland ice and North Atlantic sea surface temperature patterns. The first occurrence of dust in Northern Germany and in the Eifel is during the Late Eemian Aridity Pulse (LEAP, Sirocko et al. 2005) which is called C26 in ocean records (McManus, same vol.). This cold and arid event occurred exactly at the time of the last glacial inception at 118 kyr. Vegetation change in Northern Germany and the Eifel is out of phase after the LEAP. A taiga/tundra vegetation charcterizes Northern Germany between the LEAP and C24, whereas at the same time a Carpinus dominated temperate forest spread in the Eifel region, comparable to the Carpinus dominated forests in France (Sánchez Goñi et al., 2005). A drastic cooling, associated with widespread aridity, came with the C24 cold event, when the vegetation of central Europe changed to a tundra or shrub tundra.

Leg 87 investigated two sites in the Nankai Trough, off southeastern Japan, and one in the Japan Trench, off northeastern Japan. Several holes at the Nankai Trough sites penetrated mostly Quaternary interbedded sandy turbidites and hemipelagic mud. Foraminifers are common only in certain turbidite sands because both sites are at or just below the carbonate compensation depth. The planktonic assemblages from these sandy layers consist of mixed cool-temperate and warm-water species, and include both solution-resistant and solution-prone species. The benthic assemblages from these same layers are composed of mixtures of shelf to abyssal species. The northward-flowing Kuroshio is important in producing the mixed planktonic faunas, whereas turbidity currents are the primary agents in mixing benthic faunas and in the rapid burial of both planktonic and benthic foraminifers, which protects them from solution. Interbedded hemipelagic muds are barren or contain sparse faunas. Hole 582B penetrated through the trench-fill deposits into hemipelagic sediments that originated in the Shikoku Basin. These muds contain a dissolution facies of solution-resistant planktonic species, partially dissolved tests, and deep bathyal benthic species. Drilling at Site 584, on the landward midslope of the Japan Trench, penetrated a section of dominantly diatomaceous mudstone. This section contains a meager Pliocene calcareous fauna in its upper third and a nearly monospecific assemblage of Martinottiella communis in the lower two-thirds. Diatom biostratigraphy indicates that this change in assemblages occurs near the Miocene/Pliocene boundary. Similar biofacies changes are observed in neighboring sections drilled during Legs 56 and 57. The change from agglutinated to calcareous faunas is probably related to a relative drop in the carbonate compensation depth at the end of the Miocene.

Very fine quartz sand was examined from Paleogene and Neogene sediments of ODP Sites 693, 694, 695, 696, and 697 to determine their grain roundness using Fourier analysis and SEM surface texture characteristics. The objective of this study was to identify grain roundness and surface texture characteristics unique to East (Site 693) and West (Sites 695, 696, and 697) Antarctica and to glacial regimes. Once identified, these distinguishing features could then be used to determine changes in source area and glacial conditions in the central Weddell Sea Basin (Site 694). Three end members of very fine quartz sand are recognized in the Oligocene to Pleistocene sediments of the Weddell Sea: angular, rounded, and intermediate. End member 1 (angular) consists of extremely angular grains with numerous fracture textures. Previous investigations suggested that these sands are derived from crystalline rocks that fractured during formation or deformation and/or were exposed to weathering by ice. In this study, however, the correlation of angularity with ice activity is problematical as the most angular sands were recovered in the lower Oligocene sediments of the South Orkney Microcontinent, a period of temperate climatic conditions. End member 3 (rounded) consists of rounded grains with chemically and mechanically produced surface textures. These sands are presumed to be derived from the Beacon-type rocks in East Antarctica and the sedimentary deposits of the Northern Antarctic Peninsula. End member 2 (intermediate) grains display crystalline nodes and grain embayments. They are thought to be derived from felsic intrusives, East Antarctic quartzites, basement metamorphics of the South Orkney Microcontinent, and/or the Andean intrusive series of West Antarctica. Unfortunately, no features unique to either the East or West Antarctic sediment sources or to glacial conditions could be isolated. Therefore, the objective of determining provenance changes and sediment erosion and transport mechanisms could not be achieved using this approach.

In temperate, subpolar and polar marine systems, the classical perception that bacteria are carbon limited by end of winter and respond in activity and abundance to the production of new carbon during the diatom spring bloom and post bloom. Contrary to this view, we here document an strong increase in bacterial abundance and activity (latter measured by increasing high nuclei acid (HNA) to low nuclei acid (LNA) bacteria ratio) during the winter-spring transition, where phytoplankton smaller than 10 µm dominate. Further DNA-virus were enumerated and revealed the virus to bacteria ratio (VBR) to be decreasing during winter-spring transition, indicating that the virus did not increase in number accordingly to bacteria. During repeated visits to stations in the deep Icelandic and the Norwegian Basins and the shallow Shetland Shelf (26 March to 29 April 2012), we investigated the abundance of bacteria and the succession of HNA:LNA bacteria and VBR. Water samples were collected from CTD rosette .10 L Niskin bottles and fixed in glutaraldehyde (final conc. 5%), flash frozen in liquid Nitrogen and stored at -80°C until analysis.
