Fibrous calcite veins with organic inclusions have been widely considered as indicators of oil and gas generation and migration under overpressure. Abundant fibrous calcite veins containing organic-bearing inclusions occur in faulted Lower Paleozoic through Triassic hydrocarbon source rocks in the Dabashan Foreland Belt (DBF). d13CPDB and d18OPDB values of the fibrous calcite range from - 4.8 to -1.9 to per mil and - 12.8 to - 8.4 per mil respectively, which is lighter than that of associated carbonate host rocks ranging from - 1.7 to + 3.1 per mil and - 8.7 to - 4.5 per mil. A linear relationship between d13CPDB and d18OPDB indicates that the calcite veins were precipitated from a mixture of basinal and surface fluids. The fibrous calcite contains a variety of inclusions, such as solid bitumen, methane bearing all-liquid inclusions, and vapor-liquid aqueous inclusions. Homogenization temperatures of aqueous inclusions range from 140 to 196° with an average of 179°. Salinities of aqueous inclusions average 9.7 wt% NaCl. Independent temperatures from bitumen reflectance and inclusion phase relationships of aqueous and methane inclusions were used to determine fluid pressures. Results indicate high pressures, elevated above typical lithostatic confining pressure, from 150 to 200 MPa. The elevated salinity and high temperature and pressure conditions of the fibrous calcite veins argue against an origin solely from burial overpressure resulting from clay transformation and dehydration reactions. Instead fluid inclusion P-T data and geochemistry results and regional geology indicate abnormally high pressures during fluid migration. These findings indicate that tectonic stress generated fracture and fault fluid pathways and caused migration of organic bearing fluids from the DBF during the Yanshan orogeny.

Li-delta18O-SiO2 relationships have been examined for suites of spilitized basaltic rocks (DSDP 504B; Xigaze Ophiolite; Blanco Fracture Zone; Greater Caucasus; Rhenohercynian Fold Belt) and intra-plate evolved tholeiites (Northern Hessian Depression and Vogelsberg, W Germany; Mount Falla, Transantarctic Mountains). Relative to unaltered MORB and intra-plate primary olivine tholeiites, both the spilitic rocks and the evolved tholeiites are characterized by Li and 18O enrichment. For the spilitic rocks, Li and 18O enrichment is accompanied by a loss of SiO2 as a result of seawater hydrothermal alteration, whereas the evolved tholeiites have gained SiO2, Li and 18O from fractionation of mafic phases and assimilation of crustal rocks. On Li vs. SiO2 and delta18O vs. SiO2 diagrams, the two rock groups plot largely in distinct fields, suggesting the possibility of so distinguishing between such lithologies in the ancient rock record. Mafic granulite xenoliths from the Northern Hessian Depression have elevated Li and 18O abundances at low SiO2 contents. Even after correction for extraction of felsic components, their Li-delta18O-SiO2 signatures plot within the field of spilitic protoliths, suggesting that the lower crust in this region contains relics of spilitic rocks from a former oceanic crust.

An isotope-geochemical study of Eocene-Oligocene magmatic rocks from the Western Kamchatka-Koryak volcanogenic belt revealed lateral heterogeneity of mantle magma sources in its segments: Western Kamchatka, Central Koryak, and Northern Koryak ones. In the Western Kamchatka segment magmatic melts were generated from isotopically heterogeneous (depleted and/or insignificantly enriched) mantle sources significantly contaminated by quartz-feldspathic sialic sediments; higher 87Sr/86Sr (0.70429-0.70564) and lower 143Nd/144Nd [eNd(T) = 0.06-2.9] ratios in volcanic rocks from the Central Koryak segment presumably reflect contribution of an enriched mantle source; high positive eNd(T) and low 87Sr/86Sr ratios in magmatic rocks from the Northern Koryak segment area indicate their derivation from an isotopically depleted mantle source without significant contamination by sialic or mantle material enriched in radiogenic Sr and Nd. Significantly different contamination histories of Eocene-Oligocene mantle magmas in Kamchatka and Koryakia are related to their different thermal regimes: higher heat flow beneath Kamchatka led to crustal melting and contamination of mantle suprasubduction magmas by crustal melts. Cessation of suprasubduction volcanism in the Western Kamchatka segment of the continental margin belt was possibly related to accretion of the Achaivayam-Valagin terrane 40 Ma ago, whereas suprasubduction activity in the Koryak segment stopped due to closure of the Ukelayat basin in Oligocene.

Phosphorus content in the surface layer of bottom sediments varies from 0.07% to 0.73%. Clayey radiolarian and radiolarian clayey oozes contain 0.12% P, miopelagic clays 0.21% P, and sediments with high iron and manganese concentrations 0.46% P (average contents). Phosphorus content of iron-manganese nodules varies from 0.14% to 0.39%, average 0.19%. Correlation between phosphorus contents in nodules and surrounding sediments is indicated indirectly by P/Fe ratio. Phosphorus is non-uniformly distributed in some nodules and sometimes correlates with iron. Accumulation of phosphorus in iron-manganese nodules is governed by a degree of manganese predominance in ore components.

Typomorphic features of the main morphogenetic types of Fe-Mn nodules from the radiolarian belt have been considered on materials from polygons in the Clarion-Clipperton ore province and in the Central Basin of the Pacific Ocean. By character of surfaces, features of internal structure, mineral and chemical compositions, behavior of trace elements at selective leaching three genetic types of nodules have been divided: predominantly sedimentary, diagenetic, and sedimentary diagenetic. Their formation results from mechanism of growth.

The ca. 1880 Ma Circum-Superior Large Igneous Province (LIP) consists of a number of discontinuous segments known to cover a significant portion of the margin of the Superior Province craton in North America. New geochemical and isotopic data from western segments of this LIP support a common origin for the these segments and suggest that magmatism in the Lake Superior region may have been fed through the ~ 600 km long Pickle Crow dyke from a source north of the Fox River Belt in northeastern Manitoba. The Fox River Belt, Pickle Crow dyke and sections of the Hemlock Formation in the Lake Superior region possess trace element signatures which are similar to those of more recent oceanic plateaux. The Hemlock Formation displays a heterogeneous geochemical signature. This chemical heterogeneity can in part be explained by lithospheric contamination and possibly by source heterogeneity. The tectonomagmatic setting in which these igneous rocks were formed could have involved a mantle plume. Evidence supporting a plume origin includes high MgO volcanic rocks, high calculated degrees of partial melting and geochemical signatures similar to those of oceanic plateaux.
