Introduction Online courses provide flexible access to education from a distance. However, learners may encounter frustration and disappointment in the learning process for various reasons. Faculties might not be familiar with adult learning principles. The online course developer may have no knowledge, experience, or the skills necessary for developing online courseware. Online course development can take longer time and more resources. It can also take longer time to deliver the course. It is, therefore, important that online course development be made efficient and effective for best student learning. [See PDF for complete abstract]

Objectives. The objectives of this report were to describe current best standards in online education, class competencies, class objectives, class activities and to compare the class competencies, objectives and activities undertaken with the current best practices in online teaching and to provide a list of recommendations based on the most efficacious practices. ^ Methods. Utilizing the key words- online teaching, national standards, quality, online courses, I: (1) conducted a search on Google to find the best standard for quality online courses; the search yielded National Standards for Quality Online Teaching as the gold standard in online course quality; (2) specified class objectives and competencies as well as major activities undertaken as a part of the class. Utilizing the Southern Regional Education Board evaluation checklist for online courses, I: (1) performed an analysis comparing the class activities, objectives, and competencies with the current best standards; (2) utilized the information obtained from the analysis and class experiences to develop recommendations for the most efficacious online teaching practices. ^ Results. The class met the criteria set by the Southern Regional Education Board for evaluating online classes completely in 75%, partially in 16% and did not meet the criteria in 9% cases. The majority of the parameters in which the class did not meet the standards (4 of 5) were due to technological reasons beyond the scope of the class instructor, teaching assistant and instructional design. ^ Discussion. Successful online teaching requires awareness of technology, good communication, methods, collaboration, reflection and flexibility. Creation of an online community, engaging online learners and utilizing different learning styles and assessment methods promote learning. My report proposes that online teaching should actively engage the students and teachers with multiple interactive strategies as evidenced from current best standards of online education and my “hands-on” work experience. ^ Conclusion. The report and the ideas presented are intended to create a foundation for efficacious practice on the online teaching platform. By following many of the efficacious online practices described in the report and adding from their own experiences, online instructors and teaching assistants can contribute to effective online learning. ^

The purpose of this online course is to ensure new nursing graduate students know how to use computer technologies required to complete academic and research activities. Powerful computers, high speed internet, digitalized resources and databases are widely available in educational institutes. New renovation and updates are being released at faster pace than ever. All these developments are necessary for a student to utilize computer programs and synthesize large amount of data in a limited time for any given academic research project. Purpose of the study. This study had two components. The first component of the study was the development and implementation of an infrastructure that integrated Promotores who teach diabetes self-management into a community clinic. The second component was a six-month randomized clinical trial (RCT) designed to test the effectiveness of the Promotores in changing knowledge, beliefs, and HbA1c levels among Mexican American patients with type 2 diabetes. ^ Methods. Starfield's adaptation of the Donbedian structure, process, and outcome methodology was used to develop a clinic infrastructure that allowed the integration of Promotores as diabetes educators. The RCT of the culturally sensitive Promotores-led 10-week diabetes self-management program compared the outcomes of 63 patients in the intervention group with 68 patients in a wait-list, usual care control group. Participants were Mexican Americans, at least 18 years of age, with type 2 diabetes, who were patients at a Federally Qualified Health Center on the Texas-Mexico border. At baseline, three months, and six months, data were collected using the Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire (DKQ, the Health Beliefs Questionnaire (HBQ, and HbA1c levels were drawn by the clinic laboratory. A mixed model methodology was used to analyze the data. ^ Results. The infrastructure to support a Promotores-led diabetes self-management course designed in concert with administration, the physicians, and the CDE, resulted in (1) employment of Promotores to teach diabetes self-management courses; (2) integration of provider and nurse oversight of course design and implementation; (3) management of Promotora training, and the development of teaching competencies and skills; (4) coordination of care through communication and documentation policies and procedures; (5) utilization of quality control mechanisms to maintain patient safety; and (6) promotion of a culturally competent approach to the educational process. The RCT resulted in a significant improvement in the intervention group's DKQ scores over time (F [1, 129] = 4.77, p = 0.0308), and in treatment by time (F [2, 168] = 5.85, p = 0.0035). Neither the HBQ scores nor the HbA1c changed over time. However, the baseline HbA1c was 7.49, almost at the therapeutic level. The DKQ, HBQ, and HbA1c results were significantly affected by age; the DKQ and HbA1c by years with diabetes. ^ Conclusions. The clinic model provides a systematic approach to safely address the educational needs of large numbers of patients with type 2 diabetes who live in communities that suffer from a lack of health care professionals. The Promotores-led diabetes self-management course improved the knowledge of patients with diabetes and may be a culturally sensitive strategy for meeting patient educational needs. The low baseline HbA1c levels in this border community suggested that patients in this Federally Qualified Health Center on the Texas-Mexico border were experiencing good medical management of their diabetes. ^

The unprecedented attacks of September 11, 2001, and the subsequent anthrax-related events thrust our nation's often forgotten public health system into the forefront of public attention. A strong public health system with a well-prepared workforce plays a critical role in preparing for and responding to the threat of bioterrorism and other disasters and emergencies. Technical expertise is critical as is a basic awareness and understanding of core public health competencies especially as they relate to disaster and emergency response is also imperative for a public health agency to function as a vital Emergency Response team member. Ideally this training should begin at the Public Health graduate level so as to provide the baseline core tools to be able to function as a vital team member when they are practicing out in the real world. Online learning is an efficient and effective method for providing public health education to in a flexible format to meet the needs of busy student-professions. This Public Health Disaster Preparedness online course developed during an Emergency Response state program practicum is a practical and proficient approach to accomplish this endeavor. ^

The "EMR Tutorial" is designed to be a bilingual online physician education environment about electronic medical records. After iterative assessment and redesign, the tutorial was tested in two groups: U.S. physicians and Mexican medical students. Split-plot ANOVA revealed significantly different pre-test scores in the two groups, significant cognitive gains for the two groups overall, and no significant difference in the gains made by the two groups. Users rated the module positively on a satisfaction questionnaire.

Introduction: Distance education has grown in popularity and usage. At the same time, enrollments at postsecondary institutions continue to increase. This places significant growth pressures on institutions of higher learning. Institutions providing nursing education have historically faced limited faculty resources. This has made it difficult to meet demand for distance education; and an “all-at-once” approach to course development does little to ease this problem. In this approach, resources are expended up front before a course is offered. [See PDF for complete abstract].

Introduction: The United States is currently experiencing increased prevalence of obesity. This is a particular problem amongst children who require dietary and activity behavioral change to mitigate this problem. The use of computer games as channels to motivate health behavior in children is increasing. Casual games are a subset of computer games that are simple in design, easy to access and play, popular with children, and have the potential to be effective for drill and practice learning. Online courses will play a key role in the high-volume Informatics education required to train the personnel that will be necessary to fulfill the health IT needs of the country. Online courses can cause feelings of isolation in students. A common way to address these feelings is to hold synchronous online "chats" for students. Conventional chats, however, can be confusing and impose a high extrinsic cognitive load on their participants that hinders the learning process. In this paper we present a qualitative analysis that shows the causes of this high cognitive load and our solution through the use of a moderated chat system.
