We analyse the access to different institutional pathways to higher education for second-generation students, focusing on youths that hold a higher-education entrance certificate. The alternative vocational pathway appears to compensate to some degree, compared to the traditional academic one, for North-African and Southern-European youths in France, those from Turkey in Germany, and to a lesser degree those from Portugal, Turkey, Ex-Yugoslavia, Albania/Kosovo in Switzerland. This is not the case in Switzerland for Western-European, Italian, and Spanish youths who indeed access higher education via the academic pathway more often than Swiss youths. Using youth panel and survey data, multinomial models are applied to analyse these pathway choices.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS We conducted a focus group analysis with students and surgeons on factors which influence medical school students' education in the operating room (OR). The interviews were analyzed using grounded theory. RESULTS The analysis resulted in 18 detailed and easily applyable themes, which were grouped into the four categories: "Students' preparation and organizational aspects", "Learning objectives", "Educational strategies for the teacher", and "Social-environmental aspects". CONCLUSION By including students and surgeons, we were able to extend existing knowledge and enable better understanding of factors influencing teaching in the OR.

Visual perception is not identical in the upper and lower visual hemifields. The mechanisms behind this difference can be found at the retinal, cortical, or higher attentional level. In this study, a new visual test battery, that involves real-time comparisons of complex visual stimuli, such as shape of objects, and speed of moving dot patterns, in the upper and lower visual hemifields, is presented. This study represents, to our knowledge, the first to implement such a visual test battery in an immersive environment composed of a hemisphere, in order to present visual stimuli in precise regions of the visual field. Ten healthy volunteers were tested in this pilot study. The results showed a higher accuracy in the image matching when the visual test was performed in the lower visual hemifield.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of native engineered amniotic scaffolds (AS) and polyesterurethane scaffolds (DegraPol) and document wound healing response when sealing iatrogenic fetal membrane defects in the rabbit model. STUDY DESIGN: Native AS were engineered from freshly harvested membranes of 23 days' gestational age (GA; term = 31-2 d). Acellularity of AS was assessed by histology, light and scanning electron microscopy. Fetal membrane defects were created by 14 gauge-needle puncture at GA 23 days and primarily closed with AS (n = 10) or DegraPol (n = 10) or left unclosed (positive controls; n = 10). Sixty-one sacs served as negative controls. At GA 30 days a second look hysterotomy was performed to assess presence of amniotic fluid (AF) and harvest plugging sites for microscopic evaluation. RESULTS: Engineered AS had a cell-free collagenous fiber network. AF was significantly higher only in the DegraPol group (78%; P < .05) compared to the AF in positive controls (17%). Integration of plugs in the fetal membrane defect was better with AS than DegraPol, with higher reepithelialization rates (AS: 52.5% +/- 6.5%; DegraPol: 11.6% +/- 2.6%; P < .001) and proliferation indices (AS: 0.47 +/- 0.03; DegraPol: 0.28 +/- 0.04; P = .001). In both treatment groups, cell proliferation in the myometrium was increased (P < .05). CONCLUSION: Native AS seal iatrogenic fetal membrane defects better than DegraPol. Within a week, there is abundant reepithelilization and minimal local inflammation. This yields the proof of principle that engineered native, amniotic membrane scaffolds enhance fetal membrane wound healing response.

Source quantification of carbonaceous aerosols in the Chinese outflow regions still remains uncertain despite their high mass concentrations. Here, we unambiguously quantified fossil and nonfossil contributions to elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) of total suspended particles (TSP) from a regional receptor site in the outflow of Northeast China using radiocarbon measurement. OC and EC concentrations were lower in summer, representing mainly marine air, than in other seasons, when air masses mostly traveled over continental regions in Mongolia and northeast China. The annual-mean contribution from fossil-fuel combustion to EC was 76 ± 11% (0.1−1.3 μg m−3). The remaining 24 ± 11% (0.03−0.42 μg m−3) was attributed to biomass burning, with slightly higher contribution in the cold period (∼31%) compared to the warm period (∼21%) because of enhanced emissions from regional biomass combustion sources in China. OC was generally dominated by nonfossil sources, with an annual average of 66 ± 11% (0.5−2.8 μg m−3), approximately half of which was apportioned to primary biomass burning sources (34 ± 6%). In winter, OC almost equally originated from primary OC (POC) emissions and secondary OC (SOC) formation from fossil fuel and biomass-burning sources. In contrast, summertime OC was dominated by primary biogenic emissions as well as secondary production from biogenic and biomass-burning sources, but fossil-derived SOC was the smallest contributor. Distinction of POC and SOC was performed using primary POC-to-EC emission ratios separated for fossil and nonfossil emissions.

The main aim of this article is to shed light on the extent to which differences in higher education participation between people with and without a migrant background of low/higher social origin can be explained by two macro-level characteristics of national educational institutions: stratification of the secondary school system and provision of alternative access to higher education. General assumptions are that people with a migrant background of low social origin benefit in low-stratified secondary school systems and in systems that provide alternative access to institutions of higher education more than their native peers in the same social stratum, owing to primary and secondary effects of migrant background. Database is a pooled dataset of the five waves of the European Social Survey. Results of logistic multi-level analyses indicate that a low-stratified secondary school system improves the probability of people with a migrant background/low social origin attaining a higher education degree. On the other hand, a stratified secondary school system reduces their chances regarding this educational stage. The provision of alternative access to an institution of higher education improves their likelihood of becoming higher education graduates.
