The charge transport properties of a catechol-type dithiol-terminated oligo-phenylene-ethynylene was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and by the scanning tunnelling microscopy break junction technique (STM-BJ). Single molecule charge transport experiments demonstrated the existence of high and low conductance regions. The junction conductance is rather weakly dependent on the redox state of the bridging molecule. However, a distinct dependence of junction formation probability and of relative stretching distances of the catechol- and quinone-type molecular junctions is observed. Substitution of the central catechol ring with alkoxy-moieties and the combination with a topological analysis of possible π-electron pathways through the respective molecular skeletons lead to a working hypothesis, which could rationalize the experimentally observed conductance characteristics of the redox-active nanojunctions.

A tandem directed metalation has been successfully applied to the preparation of thieno2,3-fbenzofuran-4,8-dione, providing an efficient and facile approach to symmetrically and unsymmetrically functionalize the thieno2,3-fbenzofuran core at the 2,6 positions as well as to introduce the electron-withdrawing or -donating groups (EWG or EDG) at its 4,8 positions. The presence of various functional groups makes late-stage derivatization attainable.

Cardiac tissue engineering approaches can deliver large numbers of cells to the damaged myocardium and have thus increasingly been considered as a possible curative treatment to counteract the high prevalence of progressive heart failure after myocardial infarction (MI). Optimal scaffold architecture and mechanical and chemical properties, as well as immune- and bio-compatibility, need to be addressed. We demonstrated that radio-frequency plasma surface functionalized electrospun poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL) fibres provide a suitable matrix for bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) cardiac implantation. Using a rat model of chronic MI, we showed that MSC-seeded plasma-coated PCL grafts stabilized cardiac function and attenuated dilatation. Significant relative decreases of 13% of the ejection fraction (EF) and 15% of the fractional shortening (FS) were observed in sham treated animals; respective decreases of 20% and 25% were measured 4 weeks after acellular patch implantation, whereas a steadied function was observed 4 weeks after MSC-patch implantation (relative decreases of 6% for both EF and FS).

The two crystalline donor-acceptor complexes showing hydrogen-bondings between bis(ethylenedithio) tetrathiofulvalene (BEDT-TTF) derivatives containing pyridine and pyrazine groups and 2,5-dichloro-3,6-dihydroxyl-1,4-benzoquinone (chloranilic acid) were prepared. X-ray structure analyses revealed that functional groups play an important role in constructing the unique crystal structures.

Novel functionalized bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT–TTF) derivatives 4 and 5 have been synthesized in good yields from cyano precursor via a cross-coupling reaction. Their redox potentials have been studied by cyclic voltammetry in a dichloromethane solution; this indicated that they are slightly weaker electron donors than BEDT–TTF. Compound 4 has been studied by X–ray crystallography; this revealed that, in the crystal, the molecules were held together by some unconventional C–H···N and C–H···S hydrogen bonds.

An improved and efficient synthetic route to four functionalized bis(ethylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene (BEDT-TTF) derivatives 2−5 is reported. Tetrathiolate 1 was readily prepared from 2,2‘-bis(1,3,4,6-tetrathiapentalen-5-one) under carefully controlled conditions. Subsequent reaction of 1 with selected primary alkyl halides affords new functionalized BEDT-TTF derivatives in good yields.
