Evidence suggests that superior motor performance coincides with a longer duration of the last fixation before movement initiation, an observation called “quiet eye” (QE). Although the empirical findings over the last two decades underline the robustness of the phenomenon, little is known about its functional role in motor performance. Therefore, a novel paradigm is introduced, testing QE duration as an independent variable by experimentally manipulating the onset of the last fixation before movement unfolding. Furthermore, this paradigm is employed to investigate the functional mechanisms behind the QE phenomenon by manipulating the predictability of the target position and thereby the amount of information to be processed over the QE period. The results further support the assumption that QE affects motor performance, with experimentally prolonged QE durations increasing accuracy in a throwing task. However, it is only under a high information-processing load that a longer QE duration is beneficial for throwing performance. Therefore, the optimization of information processing, particularly in motor execution, turns out to be a promising candidate for explaining QE benefits on a functional level.

Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit ist die Entwicklung und der Test eines auf Consumer-Highspeedkameras basierenden Bewegungserfassungssystems. Consumer-Kameras sind flexibler einsetzbar als kommerzielle Bewegungserfassungssysteme, zugleich kostengünstiger und werden daher oft in der sportwissenschaftlichen Forschung verwendet. Durch ihren Einsatz entstehen jedoch prinzipbedingt höhere Messunsicherheiten, deren Bestimmung in der vorliegenden Arbeit ein besonderer Stellenwert eingeräumt wird. Nach einem Überblick über aktuelle Bewegungserfassungssysteme und deren Genauigkeiten folgt eine Betrachtung der Messunsicherheit aus metrologischer Perspektive. Anschließend werden die Prozesse der Bilderfassung bei digitalen Consumer-Kameras sowie die zur Modellierung des Kameraabbildungsverhaltens notwendigen Parameteridentifikationsmethoden dargestellt. Diese reichen vom häufig genutzten DLT-Verfahren über Methoden mit Verzeichnungskorrektur bis zu Bündelausgleichsverfahren. Im Anschluss werden die für die verwendeten Kameras geeigneten Methoden auf Basis funktionaler Hardwaretests ausgewählt und weitere für das Bewegungserfassungssystem notwendige Softwarekomponenten diskutiert. Dazu gehören neben der automatisierten Video- und Bildverarbeitung, spezielle Verfahren zur Korrektur von Consumer-Kamera-spezifischen Abweichungen, z.B. die Korrektur von Rolling-Shutter-Verzerrungen. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit richtet sich der Fokus auf die Simulation der Effekte von Parameterungenauigkeiten auf die Systemgenauigkeit sowie auf die Validierung und den Test des implementierten Systems. Dabei konnte die Rekonstruktionsgenauigkeit von 11.86mm bei einer Referenzrahmenkalibration durch den Einsatz der Kalibrationsmethode mit Bündelausgleichsverfahren von Svoboda u. a. (2005) auf maximal 4.126mm (M=0.073 mm; SD=1.486 mm) reduziert werden. Diese Methode erlaubt zudem eine einfachere Kalibration größerer Messvolumen ohne aufwändige Referenzrahmen und ist daher ideal für den sportwissenschaftlichen Einsatz geeignet. Ein weiteres Ergebnis der Arbeit ist die theoretische Ableitung der Fehlerfortpflanzung für die Prozessschritte der Bewegungserfassung. In Kombination mit der entwickelten Simulationsumgebung wird damit die Grundlage für eine Prädiktion der erreichbaren Messunsicherheit bereits vor der eigentlichen Messung gelegt.

This article addresses ethical consumer behavior and uses the purchase of Fair Trade (FT) coffee to gain insights into determinants of ‘moral behavior’ in the marketplace. Our primary concern is to clarify which theoretical concepts and determinants are more useful than others in explaining FT consumption. We compare the explanatory power of consumer budget restrictions, consumer identity, social and personal norms, social status, justice beliefs, and trust. Our second aim is methodological; we contrast data on self-reported consumption of FT coffee with experimental data on hypothetical choices of different coffee products. To gain insights into the robustness of our measurement and findings, we test our propositions using two samples of undergraduate students from Germany and the United States. Our data show that consumer identity and personal norms are the major determinants of FT consumption in both samples, the results from survey-based data and from our experimental data are similar in this regard. Further, we demonstrate that studies based on a limited number of determinants might overestimate effects; the effect of justice beliefs for instance vanishes if other determinants are taken into account.

Maintaining a loyal customer base is challenging for “Deal of the Day” (DoD) platforms. DoD providers market and sell deals on products and services, yet it is the merchants who ultimately deliver those to consumers. Low entry and switching costs drive competition in this market. However, research on the determinants of user loyalty in the DoD context is limited. This study uses Grounded Theory and Structural Equation Modeling to explore the phenomenon of DoD platform loyalty. Particularly, monetary benefits, signal-to-noise ratio, perceived risk, and service friendliness during a merchant encounter emerge as powerful determinants of loyalty in this novel context.

The presence of soluble carbohydrates in the cambial zone, either from sugars recently produced during photosynthesis or from starch remobilized from storage organs, is necessary for radial tree growth. However, considerable uncertainties on carbohydrate dynamics and the consequences on tree productivity exist. This study aims to better understand the variation in different carbon pools at intra-annual resolution by quantifying how cambial zone sugar and starch concentrations fluctuate over the season and in relation to cambial phenology. A comparison between two physiologically different species growing at the same site, i.e., the evergreen Picea abies Karst. and the deciduous Larix decidua Mill., and between L. decidua from two contrasting elevations, is presented to identify mechanisms of growth limitation. Results indicate that the annual cycle of sugar concentration within the cambial zone is coupled to the process of wood formation. The highest sugar concentration is observed when the number of cells in secondary wall formation and lignification stages is at a maximum, subsequent to most radial growth. Starch disappears in winter, while other freeze-resistant non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) increase. Slight differences in NSC concentration between species are consistent with the differing climate sensitivity of the evergreen and deciduous species investigated. The general absence of differences between elevations suggests that the cambial activity of trees growing at the treeline was not limited by the availability of carbohydrates at the cambial zone but instead by environmental controls on the growing season duration.

Digital TV offers of 200 channels and 500 video-on-demand films, podcasting, mobile television, a new web blog being created every two seconds - these are some of the factual elements depicting contemporary audiovisual media in the digital environment. The present article looks into some of these technological advances and sketches their implications for the markets of media content, in particular as newly emerging patterns of consumer and business behaviour are concerned. Ultimately, it puts forward the question of whether the existing audiovisual media regulatory models, which are still predominantly analogue-based, have been rendered obsolete by the transformed (and continually transforming) digital environment.

The Quiet Eye (QE; Vickers 1996) has been shown to underpin successful performance, differentiating both expertise (inter-individual) and proficiency (intra-individual), with experts and successful attempts characterised by longer QE durations. The QE is proposed to reflect the time needed to organise and fine tune the parameters of movement (e.g. force and direction). In order to examine this prediction and build upon previous research we experimentally manipulated the difficulty of a golf putting task; we hypothesised that if the QE is related to motor programming then a more difficult task should be associated with longer QE durations. 33 golfers (M age= 21.16, SD= 3.98) with an average handicap of 6.5 (SD= 6.02) performed putts in 4 conditions of increasing difficulty. We manipulated the length of the golf putt (short-4ft, long-8ft) and the contact point of the putter head (large-1.7cm, small-0.5cm,) giving increasingly difficult putting conditions of short-large [1], short-small [2], long-large [3] and long-small [4]. We measured performance (radial error from hole in cm) and QE (in ms) for 10 putts in each condition. A repeated measures ANOVA was performed on the performance and QE data. The performance data suggest that we were successful in increasing the difficulty of the task (F (3,93) = 26.46. p = .000), with the best performance in condition [1] (8.57cm), followed by [2] (9.10cm) followed by [3] (16.11cm) and finally the worst performance was in condition [4] (23.40cm). The QE data suggest that, in keeping with our hypothesis, the QE was lengthened as task difficulty increased (F (3,87) = 11.91, p = .043). The QE was shortest in condition [1] (1787.85ms) and increased to condition [2] (1939.78ms) and condition [3] (2076.51ms), with the longest QE in condition [4] (2164.08ms). More detailed analysis of the QE reveal that it was the proportion of the QE that occurred before movement initiation (pre-QE) which increased with shot difficulty, rather than the proportion that occurred during the swing (Online-QE; see Vine et al., 2013). Results support the notion that more complex tasks are associated with a longer QE duration, specifically participants appear to spend longer fixating the target prior to movement. This likely reflects the time needed to process visual information gathered in a pre-performance routine, to inhibit external distraction, and to pre-programme the increasingly difficult parameters of the movement.
