[EN]In this paper a system for face recognition from a tabula rasa (i.e. blank slate) perspective is described. A priori, the system has the only ability to detect automatically faces and represent them in a space of reduced dimension. Later, the system is exposed to over 400 different identities, observing its recognition performance evolution. The preliminary results achieved indicate on the one side that the system is able to reject most of unknown individuals after an initialization stage.

[EN]In face recognition, where high-dimensional representation spaces are generally used, it is very important to take advantage of all the available information. In particular, many labelled facial images will be accumulated while the recognition system is functioning, and due to practical reasons some of them are often discarded. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for using this information. The algorithm has the fundamental characteristic of being incremental. On the other hand, the algorithm makes use of a combination of classification results for the images in the input sequence. Experiments with sequences obtained with a real person detection and tracking system allow us to analyze the performance of the algorithm, as well as its potential improvements.

[EN]Facial image processing is becoming widespread in human-computer applications, despite its complexity. High-level processes such as face recognition or gender determination rely on low-level routines that must e ectively detect and normalize the faces that appear in the input image. In this paper, a face detection and normalization system is described. The approach taken is based on a cascade of fast, weak classi ers that together try to determine whether a frontal face is present in the image.

[EN]Spoofing identities using photographs is one of the most common techniques to attack 2-D face recognition systems. There seems to exist no comparative stud- ies of di erent techniques using the same protocols and data. The motivation behind this competition is to com- pare the performance of di erent state-of-the-art algo- rithms on the same database using a unique evaluation method. Six di erent teams from universities around the world have participated in the contest.

[EN]In this work local binary patterns based focus measures are presented. Local binary patterns (LBP) have been introduced in computer vision tasks like texture classification or face recognition. In applications where recognition is based on LBP, a computational saving can be achieved with the use of LBP in the focus measures. The behavior of the proposed measures is studied to test if they fulfill the properties of the focus measures and then a comparison with some well know focus measures is carried out in different scenarios.

Automatic face recognition has been mainly tackled by matching a new image to a set of previously computed identity models. The literature describes approximations where those identity models are based on a single sample or a set of them. However, face representation keeps being a topic of great debate in the psychology literature, with some results suggesting the use of an average image. In this paper, instead of restricting our system to a fixed and precomputed classifier, the system learns iteratively based on the experience extracted from each meeting.

[EN]Most face recognition systems are based on some form of batch learning. Online face recognition is not only more practical, it is also much more biologically plausible. Typical batch learners aim at minimizing both training error and (a measure of) hypothesis complexity. We show that the same minimization can be done incrementally as long as some form of ”scaffolding” is applied throughout the learning process. Scaffolding means: make the system learn from samples that are neither too easy nor too difficult at each step. We note that such learning behavior is also biologically plausible. Experiments using large sequences of facial images support the theoretical claims. The proposed method compares well with other, numerical calculus-based online learners.

[EN]Gender recognition has achieved impressive results based on the face appearance in controlled datasets. Its application in the wild and large datasets is still a challenging task for researchers. In this paper, we make use of classical techniques to analyze their performance in controlled and uncontrolled condition respectively with the LFW and MORPH datasets. For both sets the benchmarking protocol follows the 5-fold cross-validation proposed by the BEFIT challenge.

[EN]The use of new technologies in order to step up the inter- action between humans and machines is the main proof that faces are important in videos. Therefore we suggest a novel Face Video Database for development, testing and veri cation of algorithms related to face- based applications and to facial recognition applications. In addition of facial expression videos, the database includes body videos. The videos are taken by three di erent cameras, working in real time, without vary- ing illumination conditions.

[EN] This paper analyzes the detection and localization performance of the participating face and eye algorithms compared with the Viola Jones detector and four leading commercial face detectors. Performance is characterized under the different conditions and parameterized by per-image brightness and contrast. In localization accuracy for eyes, the groups/companies focusing on long-range face detection outperform leading commercial applications.

[EN]In this paper, we experimentally study the combination of face and facial feature detectors to improve face detection performance. The face detection problem, as suggeted by recent face detection challenges, is still not solved. Face detectors traditionally fail in large-scale problems and/or when the face is occluded or di erent head rotations are present. The combination of face and facial feature detectors is evaluated with a public database. The obtained results evidence an improvement in the positive detection rate while reducing the false detection rate. Additionally, we prove that the integration of facial feature detectors provides useful information for pose estimation and face alignment.

[ES]The aim of the Kinship Verification in the Wild Evaluation (held in conjunction with the 2015 IEEE International Conference on Automatic Face and Gesture Recognition, Ljubljana, Slovenia) was to evaluate different kinship verification algorithms. For this task, two datasets were made available and three possible experimental protocols (unsupervised, image-restricted, and image-unrestricted) were designed. Five institutions submitted their results to the evaluation: (i) Politecnico di Torino, Italy; (ii) LIRIS-University of Lyon, France; (iii) Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain; (iv) Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, China; and (v) Bar Ilan University, Israel. Most of the participants tackled the image-restricted challenge and experimental results demonstrated better kinship verification performance than the baseline methods provided by the organizers.
