[EN]A new methodology for wind field simulation or forecasting over complex terrain is introduced. The idea is to use wind measurements or predictions of the HARMONIE mesoscale model as the input data for an adaptive finite element mass consistent wind model. The method has been recently implemented in the freely-available Wind3D code. A description of the HARMONIE Non-Hydrostatic Dynamics can be found in. HARMONIE provides wind prediction with a maximum resolution about 1 Km that is refined by the finite element model in a local scale (about a few meters). [EN]Isogeometric analysis (IGA) has arisen as an attempt to unify the fields of CAD and classical finite element methods. The main idea of IGA consists in using for analysis the same functions (splines) that are used in CAD representation of the geometry. The main advantage with respect to the traditional finite element method is a higher smoothness of the numerical solution and more accurate representation of the geometry. IGA seems to be a promising tool with wide range of applications in engineering. However, this relatively new technique have some open problems that require a solution. [EN]We investigate mechanisms which can endow the computer with the ability of describing a human face by means of computer vision techniques. This is a necessary requirement in order to develop HCI approaches which make the user feel himself/herself perceived. This paper describes our experiences considering gender, race and the presence of moustache and glasses. This is accomplished comparing, on a set of 6000 facial images, two di erent face representation approaches: Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and Gabor lters. The results achieved using a Support Vector Machine (SVM) based classi er are promising and particularly better for the second representation approach.

[EN]This paper describes in detail a real-time multiple face detection system for video streams. The system adds to the good performance provided by a window shift approach, the combination of different cues available in video streams due to temporal coherence. The results achieved by this combined solution outperform the basic face detector obtaining a 98% success rate for around 27000 images, providing additionally eye detection and a relation between the successive detections in time by means of detection threads.

[EN]In this paper we will present Eldi, a mobile robot that has been in opertation at the Elder Museum of Science and Technology at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria since december 1999. This is an ongoing project that was organized in three different stages of which only the first one has been accomplished. The initial phase, termed "The Player", the second stage, actually under develpment, has been called "The Cicerone" and in the final phase, termed "The Vagabond", in which Eldi will be allowed to move erratically across the Museum. This paper will focus on the accomplished first stage to succinctly describe the physical robot and the environment and demos developed. Finally we will summarize some important lessons learnt.

[EN]In this paper, a basic conceptual architecture aimed at the design of Computer Vision System is qualitatively described. The proposed architecture addresses the design of vision systems in a modular fashion using modules with three distinct units or components: a processing network or diagnostics unit, a control unit and a communications unit. The control of the system at the modules level is designed based on a Discrete Events Model. This basic methodology has been used to design a realtime active vision system for detection, tracking and recognition of people. It is made up of three functional modules aimed at the detection, tracking, recognition of moving individuals plus a supervision module.

[EN]This paper describes an Active Vision System whose design assumes a distinction between fast or reactive and slow or background processes. Fast processes need to operate in cycles with critical timeouts that may affect system stability. While slow processes, though necessary, do not compromise system stability if its execution is delayed. Based on this simple taxonomy, a control architecture has been proposed and a prototype implemented that is able to track people in real-time with a robotic head while trying to identify the target. In this system, the tracking module is considered as the reactive part of the system while person identification is considered a background task.

[EN]An active vision system to perform tracking of moving objects in real time is described. The main goal is to obtain a system integrating off-the-self components. These components includes a stereoscopic robotic-head, as active perception hardware; a DSP based board SDB C80, as massive data processor and image acquisition board; and finally, a Pentium PC running Windows NT that interconnects and manages the whole system. Real-time is achieved taking advantage of the special architecture of DSP. An evaluation of the performance is included.

[EN]Active Vision Systems can be considered as dynamical systems which close the loop around artificial visual perception, controlling camera parameters, motion and also controlling processing to simplify, accelerate and do more robust visual perception. Research and Development in Active Vision Systems [Aloi87], [Bajc88] is a main area of interest in Computer Vision, mainly by its potential application in different scenarios where real-time performance is needed such as robot navigation, surveillance, visual inspection, among many others. Several systems have been developed during last years using robotic-heads for this purpose...

[EN]Previous studies have reported an association between a more pro-inflammatory diet profile and various chronic metabolic diseases. The Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) was used to assess the inflammatory potential of nutrients and foods in the context of a dietary pattern. We prospectively examined the association between the DII and the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD: myocardial infarction, stroke or cardiovascular death) in the PREDIMED (Prevención con Dieta Mediterránea) study including 7216 high-risk participants.

En ella se dará una visión general del personaje, mencionando todos los campos que abordó a lo largo de su vida. Se analizarán someramente los distintos aspectos científico-naturalistas tratados por él, tanto en sus estudios como en su producción: astronómicos, físicos, químicos, geológicos, botánicos, zoológicos, agrícolas, geográficos y ecológicos.
