[EN]Respiratory electron transport system (ETS) activities have been used, in the past, to study respiration in many marine organisms and many different environments. The methodology follows standard practices of enzymology, by attempting to measure the maximum velocity of the enzyme reaction (Vmax) sensu Michaelis-Menten. Under controlled conditions of nutritional state the ETS method is well correlated with in situ respiration. In the interdisciplinary Expedition MALASPINA 2010, that circumnavigated the planet, we had the chance in three of seven transects (Cape Town to Perth; Perth to Sydney and Cartagena de Indias to Cartagena) to take zooplankton samples from the southern Indian Ocean and from North Atlantic Ocean. From these samples we measured protein and 150 ratios between in vivo respiration and potential respiration (ETS activity) in three size-classes of zooplankton between 100?m to > 1000?m, in the upper 150 meters of the water column. Normally, the measurements were made on fresh naturally nourished zooplankton (in situ). When biomass permitted, measurements were also made on zooplankton starved for 24 h. With this data we are investigating the variations in the R/ETS ratio and Kleiber?s law under different nutritional conditions, different oceanographic conditions, and different oceanographic regions. This analysis will help our ongoing investigation of ETS activity as an index of both respiration and of living biomass. The information acquired will facilitate the calculation of zooplankton respiration for some relatively unexplored areas of the Indian and Atlantic oceans. This data will then be available for integration with results of other Malaspina research programs

[EN]Diel vertical migrants (DVMs) are mainly zooplankton and micronekton that migrate upward from 400-700 m depth every night to feed in the productive epipelagic zone and come back at dawn to the mesopelagic zone, where they release the ingested carbon. DVMs should contribute to the biological pump in the ocean and, accordingly, to thevglobal CO2 balance. A large portion of the DVMs biomass are the lanternfishes (myctophidae), which might represent a pathway accounting for a substantial export of organic carbon to the deep ocean. Nevertheless, the magnitude of this transport is still poorly known. The combined study of migration and feeding ecology is a good approach to improve our knowledge of the DVMs role in this active carbon flux. Two dominant myctophids in the Subtropical Eastern North Atlantic Ocean (Hygophum hygomii (Lütken, 1892) and (Lobianchia dofleini (Zugmayer, 1911)) were studied from several surveys carried out around the Canary Islands during the last decade. Our results showed a marked diel vertical migration and a prevailing nocturnal feeding with predation mainly on copepods and euphausiids. The digestion state of prey suggested a slow stomach evacuation rate and that most of the ingested carbon in the epipelagic is efficiently transported to the mesopelagic zone.

[EN]The in situ activity of the enzymes aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (AARS) and the growth rates of naupliar stages of the planktonic marine copepod Paracartia grani were measured in the laboratory under different temperature and food concentrations. We assessed the effect of these parameters on growth and protein synthesis rates of P. grani nauplii. Growth and protein synthesis rates of P. grani nauplii depended on temperature and food concentration. AARS activity is valid as index of somatic growth for P. grani nauplii when growth is not limited by food availability. However, the relationship between protein-specific AARS activity and nauplii growth varied according to food availability levels. The degradation of proteins during starvation and/or the ß-oxidation of fatty acids affected the relationship between specific AARS activity and growth rates. The results presented here add to previous studies showing that the AARS activity is a useful tool for estimating somatic growth of this and other key copepod species. Nevertheless, further research is required to elucidate the validity of AARS activity as a universal proxy for growth.

[EN]Nitrogen (N) is essential for life, but its availability is frequently limited in ocean ecosystems. Among all the compounds which influence the N pool, ammonium (NH4+) represents the major source of N for autotrophs. This NH4+ is provided by bacterial remineralization and heterotrophic grazers, with the mesozooplankton responsible for 12% to 33% of the total NH4+ recycled. Quantifying the excretion physiology of zooplankton is then, necessary to understand the basis of an aquatic ecosystem?s productivity. The measurement of glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) activity has been widely used to assess the NH4+ excretion rates in planktonic communities. However, its relationship with the physiology varies with temperature and the nutritional status of the organisms, among other variables. Here we compare the GDH/RNH4+ ratio between oceanic regions with different trophic conditions. Strengthening our knowledge of the relationship between GDH activities and the NH4+ excretion rates will lead to more meaningful interpretations of the mesoscale variations in planktonic NH4+ excretion.
