In the past few years there has been a clear trend of attaching increasing importance to "inforstructures", or the capacity of ports to process the information that accompanies foreign trade flows, so that the processing becomes a facilitating factor for trade, rather than an obstacle. This led to development of the concept of a port community system, which is a computerized system that interconnects all the members of a logistics community, making the exchange of documentation as effective as possible, reducing the volume of data to be re-entered in different systems and ultimately improving the whole process of monitoring an operation until its completion. Computerization of communications between all the actors at the ports facilitates integration of the community, while it also assists interaction between ports, thus forming logistics corridors.

The regionwide study of the effects of climate change in the coastal areas of Latin America and the Caribbean has been divided into four main parts in line with the comprehensive risk-assessment methodology that was developed as research progressed. The outputs of this regional study are presented in four core documents: an analysis of the factors that are driving climate change, a study on the vulnerability of coastal areas, an evaluation of the impacts of climate change and an exploration of how all these different factors can be brought together in an assessment of the risks associated with some of the impacts of climate change on the region’s coastal areas.

This effort to study the effects of climate change in the coastal areas of Latin America and the Caribbean has been divided into four main parts in line with the comprehensive risk-assessment methodology developed. The outputs of this regional study are presented in four core documents: an analysis of coastal dynamics and climate variability, a study on the vulnerability of coastal areas, an evaluation of the impacts of climate change and an exploration of how all these different factors can be brought together in an assessment of the risks of the impacts of climate change on the region’s coastal areas. The overall objective of this study is to compile the specific types of information required in order to analyse the economic impacts of climate change in the coastal areas of Latin America and the Caribbean. The area covered by the study encompasses the coastlines of Latin America and the Caribbean (an area totalling approximately 72,182 km in length).
